Fast Mesh Network - Some Features Behind Paywall
on December 29, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
Upgraded from an older TP-Link AX4300 Wifi 6 mesh system. Swapping out the systems was super easy as the TP-Link app guided me through replacing the Main Router. From there, it was just a simple process to add the two other routers into the system.
Pros:
* The mesh network on the BE16000 uses the 6 Ghz band and is fast and stable
* Setup is simple through the app
* Large houses are blanketed in Wifi
* Multiple 2.5 Ghz ports on the nodes allowing for several devices to be wired directly
* Can support 200 devices
* Can assign a device to a specific node to ensure best/strongest connection
* Ability to configure VPN at the router level
* Wifi 7 is future proof for the next few years
Cons:
* App is a little clunky - more in-depth settings are hard to find. No ability to see data usage by device
* The mesh towers are very tall (likely for the antenna) so placement can be a little difficult
* Security+ and Advanced Parental Controls are behind a subscription/paywall. Crazy for such an expensive system
* The power brick for the nodes is huge takes up a lot of space - either in a tight location or if using a power strip or UPS.
Overall, the TP-Link Deco BE16000 is a fast, stable system. For the price paid, there should not be a paywall to get features other routers provide for free on much less costly systems.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Outdoor TV Enclosure - Expensive But Solid
on December 13, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Storm Shell 55" Weatherproof Outdoor TV Enclosure is a solid solution for mounting a TV outside and keeping it safe from the elements.
I was looking for a solution to mounting a TV to a brick wall near a hot tub we just had installed. Options were whittled down to either an outdoor TV or a weatherproof enclose for a "normal" TV. Outdoor TVs cost anywhere from $4,000 or more so that solution was quickly tossed out. Finding a weatherproof enclosure was the solution.
The cost of this enclosure is not cheap. At $600, purchasing this enclosure is an investment; especially since you will also need to purchase the TV to go into the enclosure. But at around $1000, it is still a more cost effective solution than purchasing an outdoor TV outright.
Installation of the enclosure is not overly difficult, but two people are recommended due to the size. Installation includes putting the cover and the enclosure box together, installing the fan and power strip. The product comes with the hardware needed to install to a solid concrete wall or stud wall, but if installing on brick or cinderblock, you will have to purchase toggle bolts in order to mount the TV arm safely. Installing required drilling into studs, brick, or concrete so recommend measuring twice and installing once.
Overall, the install took me about 5 hours to get the enclosure installed on my brick wall not including the electrical work done to install an outlet inside the box by a licensed electrician. For any relatively confident handy person, you can install the enclosure yourself, but if no, I recommend you hire a handy person to install.
It hasn't rained since I installed the enclosure so can't speak to the weatherproofness of the product, but it seems very weathertight. We have enjoyed watching TV when in the hot tub and recommend this product to anyone looking for an outdoor weatherproof TV solution.

Good Inexpensive Watch Band, Durability TBD
on November 29, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Insignia Silicone Band for Apple Watch is surprisingly a nice for the price. The silicon is very flexible and is comfortable on my wrist. As expected, the silicon is not at the quality level of Apple one watch bands, but this band is easy to wear all day long comfortably. The clasp mechanism seems nice and in some ways, actually better than the native clasp on Apple branded silicon bands.
Cleaning of the band is extremely easy so it's great to wear when working out or getting dirty. Time will tell how long the band will last without issue, but so far, seems relatively durable.
The band is a little difficult to put on one-handed, but gets easier the more you take your watch on and off.
Pros:
Comfortable
Easy to clean
Great for workouts
Good quality clasp
Colors are fun
Great price point - get all the colors!
Cons:
A little difficult to put on one handed
Silicon is not Apple-level quality so long-term durability is to be determined
Can be too large for some (I have large wrists and it is even a little large)

Save your money, not ready for prime-time
on November 4, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of Ecobee's thermostats. The best smart thermostats on the market. So I was beyond excited when they released a doorbell. That was, until I installed it. Although a great doorbell in theory, it just isn't ready for prime-time. Hopefully the engineers at Ecobee will be able to fix the issues experienced through future software updates. I've spent hours on the phone with Ecobee support trying to troubleshoot the issues (described below) and in reading other reviews, many other folks are experiencing the same issues.
The install is pretty much just like any other smart doorbell. Hook up the chime adaptor to your chime box and install the doorbell. The Ecobee doorbell is quite large as compared to other smart doorbells. It's huge in comparison.
Below are the pros and cons of the doorbell. As you see, the cons far outweigh the pros. Hopefully Ecobee will fix these issues soon.
Pros:
* the speaker on the doorbell is nice and loud. No issues for guests to hear you
* if you have there premium thermostat, you can get a picture from the doorbell on the thermostat
* good field of view, night vision is clear (though not in color - a con)
* install instructions through the Ecobee app is very thorough
Cons:
* notifications that someone rang the doorbell can take 4 to 5 minutes to arrive on the phone
* live video most times does not load in the iPhone app
* the video on the thermostat either doesn't load or is horrible distorted
* in order to save recordings, you have to pay for Ecobee's subscription service
* night vision does not have color which is pretty common on smart doorbells now-a-days
* although it says HomeKit enabled, it is not HomeKit Secure Video. You can only view live video feeds in HomeKit but you will not get notifications from HomeKit when the doorbell detects motion or someone rings the doorbell. Huge missed opportunity here from Ecobee who is just pushing their subscription service. It's also very ironic that the video feed in HomeKit loads so much faster than the Ecobee app.
Overall, the Ecobee doorbell has potential, but it feels rushed to market and not thoroughly tested. Time will tell if Ecobee can fix the extremely long delays in notifications and issues with video feeds not loading. If they wanted to do the right thing for their customers, they would enable the doorbell with HomeKit Secure Video, but that's a silly dream as they are pushing folks to their subscription which honestly, isn't worth it for a mostly non-functioning doorbell.

An OK Camera, but Wouldn’t Call it Pro
on October 28, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro Battery Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera is just an OK security camera. The first thing you will notice is how large and heavy the camera is. It seems larger than many wireless/battery cameras that I have seen. Not sure why the device is so large.
This was my first Ring device so I had to create an account. It was going well until it forced me to enter the address where the camera would be located. I was unable to get past that step so entered an address of a random business. This seems like a large privacy red flag and address should not be required.
The other huge negative on this camera is that you have to have a subscription plan if you wish to keep recorded video past your trial. The subscription model is getting out of hand and security cameras should have on-device storage capabilities. I won’t be paying for the subscription once my trial ends so will just be notified of real-time events.
The video is clear, both during the day and night, but for a “Pro” device, it should be in 4k, not 1080p. But the HDR option does provide crisp video overall.
Will have to see how the battery holds up over time as the camera is used outside, especially in the cold. It is relatively easy to charge the battery (though it takes many hours to charge from empty to full it seems). There is a wired option (wire and plug sold separately) if you wish to keep it plugged in all the time.
The camera comes with settings and customizations you would expect to see on security cameras today. That includes motion sensitivity, zones, motion alert scheduling, etc.
Overall, it’s not a bad camera, but with the pro moniker with only 1080p, the requirement to have to have a paid account to save videos, and the forced process to provide your address, I recommend folks needing a security camera look elsewhere.

Powerful and Versatile Blender
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Ninja Detect Power Blender Pro with BlendSense Technology is one smart blender! It has the power to blend anything you throw at it - fresh fruit, ice, veggies, etc. And the best part, the blender senses what you want to blend and automatically adjusts the speed, time, and pulses. With the large 72oz pitcher, there is plenty of room to make your favorite drinks, salsas, or smoothies.
The blender itself is sleek and I love the suction cups on the bottom to help keep it from moving around the counter. The pitcher and blade are dishwasher safe so cleanup is a breeze.
After getting the blender, the first thing I blended was a fruit smoothie. I tossed in all the frozen fruit, some ice, and a splash of milk. The blender sensed that the items were frozen and went to work blending. It was smart enough to adjust itself through the blend and in the end, created an amazing smoothie. No worrying about setting the speed, time, or pulses. Just start the blender and after a short wait, enjoy a perfectly blended smoothie.
Given Ninja's focus for quality, I expect the blender to last a number of years without issue. The last Ninja blender I had lasted 6 years before the pitcher finally cracked.
Overall, I was very skeptical of the blendsense technology, but have been impressed with it so far.

Great Level 1 Charger
on September 19, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Rexing - 16A J1772 NEMA 5-15 Level 1 Portable EV Charger is a great on-the-go charger. The charger is constructed nicely and looks like it will stand up to wear and tear. It even comes with a carrying case.
What’s so great about this charger compared to many others. A number of things:
1) an LED display on the charging brick
2) The ability to change the power draw (8, 10, 12, or 16A). Why is this important? Depending on the number of other devices plugged into the electrical circuit, a 16A draw maybe too much. It’s nice to be able to adjust the draw on the device directly. Of course the lower the draw, the slower the charging will be.
3) 17 foot cable. In most cases likely long enough, but a 25 foot cable would have been preferred
Obviously this portable charger will not replace a level 2 charger or charge your car quickly when you need it. It’s ideal for when traveling and having a half-day or more to plug-in and charge while on the go.
Overall, the Rexing 16A J1772 NEMA Level 1 charger is a great portable option. It has replaced the factory BMW level 1 charger included with my vehicle.

Good Entry Level Black and White Laser Printer
on August 6, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The HP LaserJet Pro 4001n is a decent entry level black-and-white laser printer. It has a nice compact shape that doesn't take too much space on a desktop. Setup is pretty straight forward and takes just a few minutes following the guide included with the printer.
Do note that this is not a wireless printer! It can be directly connected via Ethernet to make remote printing work, but it does not have wireless capabilities. Some users may be put off by having to directly connect this via Ethernet as most folks don't have routers convenient to where the printer will go.
Where the printer excels is the speed of printing. At 42 pages per minute, printing large jobs is quick and easy. And with the 1400 total pages capacity of the included ink cartridge, users will be able to print for a while before needing to replace the ink. Sadly, HP has made it so that you have to use authentic HP replacement cartridges as 3rd party ink doesn't work. Seems to be how printer companies are making their money now-a-days.
Overall, the 4001n laser printer is a good, entry-level printer, for anyone needing just black-and-white printing without wireless printing capabilities.

Good Speaker if Not Audiophile
on July 19, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The LG XBOOM XL7 is a large heavy speaker that, if used, in the way it was intended, is a good speaker.
Pros:
* Easy to setup
* All-in-One design
* Long battery life (up to 20 hours)
* Wheels to make it easier to move about
* Fun, customizable, lights
* Mic and guitar input
* Weather resistant (not waterproof)
* USB port to charge your phone/devices
Cons:
* Heavy (34 pounds) - but a good thing if outside in windy conditions
* App is a little clunky (hard to use to customize animations/lights)
* No wireless capability (only bluetooth)
* Just OK sound overall
* No line in
I use the XBOOM XL7 out by the pool, under a covered patio, and it provides plenty of sound for the yard. I have my phone and outdoor TV connected via bluetooth to the speaker and it works well in both situations. The lights are fun at night when it's dark and the speaker is solid so doesn't move when hit with strong winds. With it being weather resistant (not weatherproof), I know that it will be fine sitting on the covered porch without having to move it inside every day.
If you are a hard-core audiophile, stay away as this speaker is not intended for you. It definitely isn't meant for listening to music in high quality. But if you want a fun "party" speaker that works well by the pool or outside during a party, then this is one to consider.
Giving 4 stars as for the price of this speaker, I would have expected a few missing features (line in, wireless connectivity, Apple AirPlay).

Nice Band But Not Perfect
on May 1, 2023
Posted by: bobcats9498
The Platinum Nylon Band for Apple Watch is a nice band overall. It's very comfortable to wear and the fabric material used seems to be nice quality. The metal components are a great color match to the Apple Watch Ultra metal so the band blends well. The velcro enclosure is solid and the watch will stay put on your wrist even when moving about or working out. The band can get a little warm when working out or in the hot sun, but that is to be expected with any fabric band like this.
A few concerns with the band do exist however. First, if you have a larger wrist, trying to put the band on can be a pain. With one of the straps being very short, trying to feed the strap through the loop can be difficult. Secondly, I am already seeing some discoloration on the metal components of the watch band leading me to think it isn't of the highest quality metal used. And I expect it to continue to discolor over time sadly.
Overall, a decent quality band that looks good and feels great on the wrist. The long-term hold-up of the band is to be seen however.

Limited Features Not Worth the Cost
By bobcats9498
I had high hopes of the Velop mesh wifi system after reading about it from CES reviews. However, that excitement quickly faded as I started to setup and use the system.
I setup the first Velop node (connected to my modem) with no issues. Setup through the app was easy. The troubles came when I started to setup the second node. I have ethernet cable running around the house so had planned on using the nodes connected via ethernet to improve connectivity and throughput. Everything I read indicated that this feature was possible. The second node was being installed about 30 feet away from the primary node (two walls separating them).
I plugged the second node into my ethernet cable and started setup via the app. The app hung on the testing mesh connectivity screen. I called Linksys to get help (I quickly connected to an agent which I really appreciate). After explaining what was going on, she indicated that the system should NOT be connected via ethernet cables as it was not designed to do that. That’s opposite of everything I read. So I disconnected the ethernet cable and tried setup again (this time connecting second note wirelessly to primary). Still could not setup. The agent advised moving the node closer to the primary and trying again. I did this with success and then moved the node back to the original location. I was shocked that I couldn’t setup a second node only 30 feet and two walls away from the primary. The picture in the app while setting up the node shows the second node on a completely separate floor across the house. Not my experience at all.
I setup the third node (by placing it next to the primary and then moving it) and it went fine having learned from the troubles of the second node setup.
After having the system setup and using it, here were my observations:
Pros:
* The Velop system looks great - don’t have to hide nodes
* Setup of the primary node easy using the app
* Throughput is solid - not as high as my existing mesh system (Google) likely due to not being able to connect via ethernet
* Wifi covered entire house easily (4500 SqFt)
* App is easy to use (for average user, see cons below)
* Quick connection time with customer service agent
Cons:
* Setting up additional nodes can be finicky. Must be VERY close to primary node
* Does not support connecting nodes via ethernet likely resulting in reduced wifi throughput
* The app, while great for basic functionality, allows very limited advanced capabilities. You have to use the Linksys app to access the router so there are very few advanced abilities (like you would get if you accessed router via web browser).
* You cannot reserve a custom DHCP address for a device. You can reserve the address assigned to the device currently, but not specify what address you want reserved.
* You can’t change the ip range assigned to devices
* You can’t see what Velop node a device is connected to. You have to “trust” that it is connected to the best node.
Overall, the Velop mesh system is a good choice for many customers. However, given the limited advanced features and high price tag (hundreds more than other similar systems), I have to recommend that customers look at other mesh network options. Sadly, the Velop system doesn’t outshine it’s competitors enough to justify the higher cost.
Hopefully with some much needed firmware and app updates, the product will live up to its price.

Linksys Comment Contridictory to Article Reference
January 17, 2017
In their reply to my review, Linksys states that the nodes can be hard wired once setup wirelessly. They also mention "Having said that, we would still recommend using Velop to Velop wireless connectivity to achieve optimum network speed." They link to an article about setting up the nodes with Ethernet. When I read the article, it says, "The Linksys Velop can be connected together wired via Ethernet. If your home is already wired with Ethernet, you may want to take advantage of these connections to increase the range of your Velop system, maximize the speed, and reduce the risk of wireless interference."
So they say keep it wireless and the article says to keep it wired for improved speeds. Which is it?

HOW LOUD IS IT?

Crazy loud on the highest setting. It truly sounds like a jet engine taking off. On the auto setting, or level 1 on manual, it is relatively quiet. But as soon as you turn it up or it detects pollutants, it will drown out a room.

Is there anyway to use these earbuds on an airplane for the movies

No way to use on airplanes. The only option is to maybe purchase a bluetooth adaptor for airplanes and pair the headphones to the adaptor.
