Am I ready to ditch my Keurig?
on January 13, 2017
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I couldn't wait to get this set up at home and run it through its paces! However, I followed the instructions and ran it through two cleaning cycles before using it. Cleaning cycles, wow! Very impressive. And it takes an hour to run through cleaning. I am kinda eager to see how effective cleaning is after I've had a chance to muck it up with hard water.
So -- one major advantage I noticed right away compared to my Keurig -- hot water!!! I can simply remove the filter and make a cup of hot water for tea or whatever.
Also -- I can make a whole pot of coffee!
This produces way less waste than the Keurig does; no more of those environmentally-irresponsible pods to deal with. Now if only someone would come up with single-serve filter packets, like what you get in hotel rooms, that would be awesome. It would be great to be able to brew a cup of coffee and just toss the pod in your compost bin.
Single-cup brewing -- it is much slower than the Keurig and then I have to deal with cleaning up the grounds, but eventually I think I'll switch to it.
I'm relieved that the machine fits on my counter below the wall cabinets. The Keurig fits there, but there's not enough clearance to load a pod. It would be awesome if the water reservoir pulled off sideways instead of up so that it wouldn't have any low clearance issues.
The real bonus with this rig is the frother! Wow, now I can make my own lattes and cappuccinos. It's easy to use, and it removes for easy cleaning.
I'm very happy with this!
When there is a really quick and easy way to do single-cups, or if I just get a bit less lazy, that Keurig will be history.

Paradigm shift

I had to get my head around the fact that this is a whole new way to bring wifi home. I got so used to my old infrastructure approach, and I've been so spoiled with the simplicity of an MIMO system, that I first fought with Velop for hours trying to get it to play nice in my existing network.
When I gave up and decided to follow the directions, the install went okay. It was still a bit slow to get started, but now it's pretty solid.
There's almost no transparency to the setup; I don't know what the devices are doing when they connect to the internet or to eachother, but it works. Not as instantly as the instructions make it seem, but maybe I confused the devices by re-using my existing wifi name and password.
Make it easy on yourself and just make a new wifi name rather than try to use your existing one. Way easier.
The setup process is way more centralized than device-based, so when you add another device you add it to your existing network using the mobile app. Velop can't be managed in the web interface.
Each station has two Ethernet ports; they are used as the internet input as well as act as a bridge for non-wifi stuff. It does that auto-magically with no additional configuration.
The performance seems good. The internet speed isn't as good as my previous router (Linksys wrt3200acm) but for most people, the ease of setup and the range will make up for that.
It's really nice that it's seamlessly one network all over the house. I think this is going to be the best choice for most people who have multiple devices and move about the house.

High quality, does what it's designed to do
on January 6, 2017

Looking at this, I feel like I'm looking at the future! Wireless cameras, and I can view them from anywhere? Amazing. And it works great. There's good and not-so-good, but you can decide how it'll fit your needs.
The not-do-good stuff: First, I was so eager to get these out of the package! It's presented beautifully, but it took me at least 10 minutes to unbox it. I'm really good at mechanical things, but this packaging was extremely challenging.
I'm in Minnesota. I put one camera outside for a view of my backyard. The camera lived for about an hour then it stopped working. To be fair, it was -2 degrees F last night. When I rescued the camera 3 hours later, it was able to come back up but the battery was down to 73%. When they say "all weather," they don't mean sustained sub-freezing temperatures.
The base requires a wired internet connection. That could be limiting for some people.
The speaker on the camera isn't very effective; very low volume and poor audio quality, so you can't use this to shout at intruders.
If you really like to maximize your equipment and dig into advanced features, you really have to dig to get information about expansion, external storage, troubleshooting, etc. How does external storage work? Does it backup locally instead of the cloud? Both? I guess I'll find out after the 7 day cloud retention period.
A quibble -- the configuration site lists the external memory as "SD," so I wasted a few minutes looking for an SD slot.
The good stuff -- once I got it out of the package, it was super easy to set up. The batteries were fully-charged and I had no problem synching to the base.
The instructions were very simple and covered basic setup.
The mounting base was really easy to use, and it's a cool feature. However, it gives your camera zero security. Someone can simply snatch it.
Once I got it set up and the interior camera placed, I received alerts so I could watch my dogs barking at delivery people. I'm looking forward to be able to spy on them throughout the day!
Placement is going to be key. Think about where you would want the cameras.
Overall, I really like this, but it is a bit limited for my uses.

Versatile, great battery life

I've used many different clippers and trimmers over the years, and this one is by far the best. It has both power and battery life to get the job done. I'm a hairy beast, and this does a great job of keeping my body hair under control. The power and speed of the blades means something; it makes trimming a whole lot easier.

At first, I look at this thing and think -- "what am I gonna do with this? why do I need it?" It was easy to set up using the app on my phone, and I can shout all kinds of questions and commands at it. Then it started becoming useful. "what's on my shopping list?" "what am I doing tomorrow?" "what time is it in Hyderabad?" "play music (it starts my last played Pandora station)" I feel like the more I use it, the more uses I find for it. When it doesn't know something, it tells you. "I'm sorry, I can't navigate yet, but your work is 28 minutes away..."
It works great with Chromecast. Makes that thing even easier to use.
In a way, it's reshaping how I can use the smart devices and the internet.

Easy setup, great speed and range

Out of the box, setup is really easy. Just screw on the antennas and plug it in; the router comes with a card with the wifi name and password. The setup wizard is really easy to use, and for a simple setup like mine, I was up and running in minutes. There was pretty good signal all throughout the house, data transfer rates were really fast.
For a more advanced setup, I'd have to do a bit more testing with it. The wizard requires an internet connection and won't complete without one.

Powerful phone with some unpleasant surprises
on October 21, 2016
Posted by: Snarltoof
from Minneapolis, MN
I'm really excited to have this phone in my hands; it works great, navigating through the apps is really fast, has a really clean interface and zero bloatware.
I received the phone yesterday and was really eager to migrate off of my elderly Galaxy S5. I was bummed to see that the SIM card was a different size, and there was no SD card slot, and the biggest unpleasant surprise was that it uses a different charging cable, so I'm gonna have to accommodate it with my charging stations... all my other devices were considerate enough to standardize on micro-usb. Fortunately, it came with two cables and an adapter. One of the cables was normal USB 3 on one end and the new interface on the other, and the other cable had that new interface on both sides. The charger has a female connection for the new interface, so the double-ended cord is used for charging or for connecting this to another device that uses that plug. The adapter is male new plug on one side and female fullsize USB3 on the other. Confusing -- this would allow you to plug a USB3 device into the phone. It comes with instructions to migrate from your old phone to the new one, and gives two options, either NFC or through the cable. However, when you power up the phone, it chooses to migrate over your Google account across the internet anyway.
The other surprise was that I had a problem activating the phone. Might be a one-off fluke, but beware that it might happen to you. My Verizon account site didn't recognize the IMEI number of the phone, and neither did the agent on online chat. I called customer service and had to work with the agent for an hour. She was tenacious and finally figured out how to get my phone activated, but on My Verizon, the phone shows up as "non-vzw device." Good luck!
Otherwise, I give it five stars. The drawbacks above aren't problems with the phone. The phone works just how it's supposed to work, I just have to adjust how I use the phone.
The assistant thing really works great! Last night driving around, I felt like I was in a Google commercial. "Hello Google, tell me a joke," "Hello Google, navigate home," "Hello Google, play me a song," "Hello Google, what's an iPhone?" All those worked great. I didn't have to touch or look at the phone. When my wife says "Hello Google," it doesn't recognize her. I wonder if it locked onto my voice for launching. Otherwise, it did translate everything she said to the phone.
It interfaces flawlessly with Google Drive. Now I have to do a better job of organizing my pictures! For some reason, it sorts by "date modified," not "date taken." Grr. Oh, well, that's only like 15,000 pictures to organize :(
Speaking of pictures, the camera is unbelievable. It is fast. The picture it takes is just like the image on the screen. It did a great job in all lighting conditions. I'm really impressed.
So -- overall, there's a few annoying issues I have to deal with, but overall this thing is solid and I'm sure it'll serve me for years to come.

It has one job! :)

This vacuum is great at picking up dirt, dust, pet hair, etc from the floor. I've used it on hardwood, deep carpet, and short carpet and it performs great. It has lots of power, it runs for as long as I need it; I haven't had to recharge it yet.
It is a simple, elegant design, and it is solid and durable. I've knocked it around a bit. It's fun to use.
It does not include any attachments, I don't think it's even compatible with attachments, which is a plus or a minus depending on what you want. If you don't need attachments, this is awesome and you don't have to worry about wonky storage issues.
Speaking of storage, it has an ok capacity, a trade-off between capacity and convenience. I have pets, and I find that I have to empty it every couple of minutes because it fills up. The good part is that I know it's picking stuff up!
It's one weakness is corner and edge cleaning. It can't get right up to the very edge of your carpet, so if you are especially dirty, you'll have to follow up with a hand-held or something.

Great sound, easy setup
on October 3, 2016
Posted by: Snarltoof
Surprisingly good sound quality -- you can hear a pretty full range, and it is great for phone calls and Skype. It also does active noise cancelling. It's very effective. The headset is pretty comfortable. I had a couple of minor complaints -- the range isn't that great, and the instructions are really abstract. I hope to see a more detailed manual for it that explains the buttons, features, how to fit the ear pieces, etc.

Thoughtful design, suprising power
on September 28, 2016
Posted by: Snarltoof
This vacuum seems to have been designed by people who actually use vacuum cleaners! It has the essentials to take the place of a standard upright at a very light weight. They compromise on how to store the accessories, but at least they gave it thought by having one clip-on accessory holder and a bag for the rest, and there's a hanging clip. The vacuum is super top-heavy, so you just have to pop off the motor part for storing it unless you hang it. Super easy. I've used it on carpets, floors, stairs, and upholstery. I really like how it's convertible to a hand-held. Just be careful with area rugs, because this is so powerful it'll pull the rug off of the floor! I have two big dogs and a cat, and so far this vacuum has been up to the challenge of pet hair and scattered cat litter.

They got it right!
By Snarltoof from Minneapolis, MN
I've been using tablets for years, including my first Galaxy Tab 7" tablet, a variety of Acer and Asus tablets, a Surface, and Surface Book. I've also been a fan of the Samsung Galaxy phones, having a 3, 4, and a 5.
When I first got this S3 tablet, I was expecting to get decent tablet performance. What I got was a powerhouse in an elegant, extremely light weight package. The size is great -- it's way more portable than my Surface devices, and the type cover gives it a good amount of protection.
Great job on the type cover, guys! The magnet attachment and the tilted viewing angle are great. It would be awesome if the type cover had a hole for the rear camera. A couple of other minor keyboard quirks; the tablet only accepts the keyboard if the tablet is unlocked when you attach it. I was also hoping for an android button on the type cover but couldn't find it at first. I read the instructions (under settings/physical keyboard/keyboard shortcuts) and it shows a "super" button that supports all the commands I'd want to use for an Android keyboard. After hunting around, I figured out that the "search" button on the keyboard, with the magnifying glass icon, is this "super" button. Now my hands don't need to leave the keyboard. The keys are a fairly natural size, not too cramped for my very large hands, They didn't bother making a touchpad on the keyboard like you see on some other compact keyboards. Good move!
I'm going to experiment with USB C video adapters to see how it performs as a "desktop" replacement, but I'm really optimistic given how it performs normally. I have a USB C to USB 3 adapter, and it picks up my keyboard and mouse just fine, even through a KVM.
I've been using a Google Pixel phone for a while, so I lost practice with how Samsung does stuff, so it's a bit different to navigate. Not too bad, and this thing does way more and has way more features than I've explored so far.
It connected to my Wi-Fi network easily, has great web page load times, installs apps quickly, and Zen Pinball is super responsive on this.
It feels really light, so it is very easy to hold. It does great as a Kindle reader, although the screen is a bit shiny. They keyboard/case pops off easily but holds securely when it's attached either as a case or as a keyboard.
I was really excited to try it out, so I used it for two days before charging it. I let it run down to 15%, and it was still happily playing pinball. It supports quick charging, so it was back up to 40% in about 15 minutes.
It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. It's an awesome tablet.

I've been using this tablet for a month now. Still five stars. The performance is fantastic, the battery capacity is awesome, the tablet is lightweight and easy to handle, and the keyboard case pops on and off really conveniently. It is awesome that it comes with the pen.
If Samsung is out there reading this -- you gotta come up with a dock or keyboard/mouse/video/Ethernet adapter for it! This thing is a powerhouse, and if I could use it with a fullsize keyboard and monitor it would be a viable laptop replacement. I've been scouring the internet and I can't find anything that displays video while providing power to the tablet.

Do you experience dropped calls, slow internet speeds, or the inability to send and receive texts while you’re on the road or enjoying some time off the beaten path? With the weBoost Drive Reach RV, you can improve your cell signal, wherever your adventures take you. Designed to enhance signal coverage for RVs, campers and trailers, especially in remote areas. The weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster uses the latest technology to pick up an existing cell signal, route it the booster, then broadcast that amplified signal into your RV. To install the Drive Reach RV, first select where to mount the outside antenna using the provided ladder bracket. This is the most important step as it impacts the overall performance of the booster. Check that the antenna is at least 12 inches from all other antennas and openings to avoid interference. Use the modular mast extensions to ensure the antenna is above any obstructions. Once the outside antenna is installed, run the coax cable behind the weather stripping of an opening, like a door, window, or pop out slide, into your RV. Next, place the inside antenna on a table or countertop near where you plan to use your devices the most. Then run the coax cables to the booster. Plugin both the outside and inside cables. Now, plug in the power cord to the booster. Finally, plug the power cord into your vehicle’s power supply and turn on the booster. When the green light is on, it’s working. All coax cable needed for installation is provided. Stay connected, wherever you choose to explore, with the weBoost Drive Reach RV Cellular Signal Booster!

The power requirements says “plug in”. Plug into what? Does this plug into 120v AC which would require shore power or an inverter or does it plug into 12v DC in an RV? If I t’s 12V what kind of plug?

It comes with an AC power adapter, so you need shore power, inverter, or generator. I bought the 12V adapter for it, which plugs into a lighter socket.

Will the Surface Duo allow you to do Hotspot from the device? Is this capable of wifi calling?

Yes and yes. You can use it as a hotspot. At least I can on my Verizon account. It can be used for IMS calling and for SIP calling.

What is the maximum output through the USB cable. Example if I use a hub can I get 1gb Ethernet and two 4k screens @ 60hz plus a keyboard, mouse, and USB 3.0 at regular speeds? Also is there going to be a Samsung DeX or Chromebook OS from MS?

Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse work through the USB C cable, but video does not, so you won't get anything on your monitors.

Is data transferred or synched from my PC to the Duo via the YourPhone app on my PC? If not, how?

It's compatible with cloud syncing on Google Drive, gmail, hotmail, and OneDrive, so you get your data, pics, contacts, calendars, etc. It's also compatible with the YourPhone app so you can resume your browsing session and use text messaging on your PC.

Does the phone give you the option to turn off a display when not in use to conserve battery?

When you have it open like a book, both displays are on. When you have it folded shut, both displays are off. When you have it folded in the open position with both screens on the outside, only one screen stays on. You double-tap to switch screens, but it also seems to respond to how I rotate my wrist. There's only one camera so you have to rotate it between selfie and normal modes.

Password protection isn't enough anymore.Engineered with multi-layered security, Norton Core™ intelligently protects your Wi-Fi network and an unlimited number of connected IoT devices such as smart TVs, baby monitors, Wi-Fi thermostats as well as your personal devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets against malware, spyware, ransomware, viruses and more.

Do I need a smart phone to be able to use Norton Core?

I'm pretty sure you do; you need the app to set it up and control it. I'm not sure if there's a web interface, but I don't think there is.
