'Face-Off' has some awesome action sequences, but the story itself is hoaky and completely unbelievable, even within the realm of fiction. However, fans will most likely be pleased with this hd-dvd edition that has several bonus items.
The only thing I found myself thinking upon viewing this humiliating sequel was, 'It looks like it was made for TV.' Yes, it's that bad, and I have no idea why they bothered making it. Save your time and money.
Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger face off in this sword-wielding fantasy based on the writings of Robert E. Howard (who also created Conan the Barbarian). Red Sonja gets a serviceable DVD release and has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The images have also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. In addition to the original English-language soundtrack, an alternate French-language version is also included, as well as optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. The film's original theatrical trailer appears as a bonus.

Brigitte Nielson Was So Good Looking
on May 12, 2008

They probably should've just called 'Red Sonja' 'Conan 3' instead. Then again, since 'Conan 2' a.k.a. 'Conan the Destroyer' was a made for television piece of junk, they probably feared naming the film 'Conan 3' would doom it from the getgo. For whatever it's worth, this movie is mediocre at best, but will still be enjoyed by fans on this widescreen dvd. I still think the best part of the film is Brigitte Nielson, who, back in the day, was really quite beautiful.
David Zucker's follow-up to the comedy hit The Naked Gun comes to DVD with extras as entertaining as the movie. The transfer is a widescreen anamorphic 1.85:1 image. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. There are English subtitles, and both soundtracks are closed-captioned. The highlight of the supplemental features is the audio commentary with the director and producer. Also included is a pair of theatrical trailers. Anyone familiar with the Zaz gang's track for Kentucky Fried Movie or Airplane will know what to expect.

Almost As Good As the Original
on May 12, 2008

Sticking with the proper formula keeps this sequel to 'The Naked Gun' right up there with its predecessor. Great performance once again by Leslie Nielsen.
The picture on this disc is first-rate. While there are a few scratches here and there, they are brief and hardly noticeable. The disc is framed at its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (anamorphic). Beyond the scratches, the picture simply looks great; the colors are very vibrant and the darks are solid. The composition is great and the image quality really stands out. The sound, which includes an English 5.1 Dolby Digital track and a French mono (split over two tracks), is very good, but falls short of spectacular. The front, mainly center speakers get all the action; there is little use of the rear surround speakers other than during the opening theme music. Since the dialogue is straightforward and never becomes distorted or shrill, this is less problematic than it might have been. It's the extras that are surprising. The audio commentary track from director David Zucker, producer Robert Weiss (who on voice alone could easily be mistaken for Howard Stern), and a mysterious guest named Peter Tilden is a major plus. This has to be one of the funniest tracks ever recorded. Discussing whatever comes to mind, they cover everything from being sure they would get a PG-13 rating now to the later troubles of O.J. Simpson. They may not have a lot to say about the filmmaking process, but the track is lively and probably better than many of the commentary tracks out there. A theatrical trailer is included. Not many extras, but the commentary track makes up for the lack of additional goodies.

Great Spoof
on May 12, 2008

Leslie Nielson is just about perfect in this spoof comedy that's similar to 'Hot Shots,' 'Top Secret,' and 'Airplane.' Highly recommended! Widescreen.
My favorite Chris Farley movie is 'Beverly Hills Ninja,' but 'Tommy Boy' is a close second, and is presented nicely here in this much deserved special edition. Highly recommended.

Penelope Spheeris directs David Spade and Chris Farley in the comedy Black Sheep, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.0 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. The film looks and sounds great on this Paramount release, but that is all there is.

'Tommy Boy' Was A Little Better
on May 12, 2008

In 'Black Sheep,' Chris Farley and David Spade team up again, as they did in 'Tommy Boy,' only this one isn't quite as good. That's not saying it's bad, because it's actually really funny. Recommended.
This sequel to Hot Shots! didn't do half as well with the public as the first comedy but it actually contains more laughs than the original so maybe it will find a new audience on DVD. A wild spoof of the Rambo franchise that finds the time to lampoon dozens of other movies, Hot Shots! Part Deux still offers laughs after multiple viewings. The disc sports a good widescreen anamorphic transfer that returns the movie to its theatrical aspect ratio and the sound is well balanced and clear coming out of either a stereo system or television speaker. The DVD features two promotional features, the first is done in Spanish as a joke and the second (entitled "Early Awareness" -- the makers of the movie have a great time titling these things) seems like the usual made-for-HBO promotional film. While none of these extras are great, the DVD has been released at a low list price and the movie itself earns its keep in laughs alone.

Better Than the First Film
on May 12, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
The first 'Hot Shots' film tended to poke fun mostly at 'Top Gun' and similar films of the genre. This sequel goes after 'Rambo' type films, and actually surpasses the quality of its predecessor in my opinion. Recommended.
The clichés found in the movie Top Gun are so widespread that this DVD release of Hot Shots! should even find favor with younger moviegoers who've never seen the 1980s Tom Cruise hit that this flick has such an infectiously good time spoofing. Wild spoof comedies aren't the first place to go to find examples of beautiful cinematography but the widescreen anamorphic transfer here is fine and returns the movie to its original theatrical aspect ratio. The disc includes a "making of" documentary and while nothing in it quite lives up to the witty title "The Making of an Important Movie," it does offer a diverting half hour. While Hot Shots! has more than its share of big laughs, the sequel Hot Shots! Part Deux, a spoof of the Rambo franchise, is actually funnier than the first picture, and both have been released on DVD at the same time.

Funny 'Spoof' Comedy
on May 12, 2008

I enjoyed 'Hot Shots,' and thought the sequel was even better. Not for everyone, but for the people who enjoy comedies like 'Airplane' and 'Top Secret,' this one's for you. Widescreen.
