John Patrick Shanley's quirky comedy Joe Versus the Volcano comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo, while French and Spanish soundtracks have also been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a trailer, a making-of featurette, and a music video. Warner Bros. has done a solid job with this film, which was the first to pair Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Tom Hanks is Great!

A box office flop and garner of very little critical attention, 'Joe Versus the Volcano' is actually an excellent film that just never received the attention it so very much deserved, that is until this dvd release. A beautiful anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 transfer and excellent audio help those who missed it on the big screen get another chance to view it as it was intended to be seen. An obscure tale of honor and integrity, underscored by a sweet love story and awkward yet hilarious moments allow this film to role smoothly. Highly recommended.

Franco Zeffirelli's television miniseries about the life of Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Supplemental materials include a trailer, and additional information on how life was lived during Biblical times. This is a solid release from Artisan that should please genre enthusiasts as well as those with an interest in the subject matter.

The Best Representation of Christ on Film
on April 13, 2008

As a person who has read the entire Bible a couple of times, I will go on record as saying 'Jesus of Nazareth' is by far the most precise depiction of Christ I have seen put on film, based on what is spoken of him in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Now, this is not to say that everything in the film is perfectly accurate, but it does a stellar job of giving us an outstanding depiction in the overall embodiment of Christ. I honestly feel that, much like the Bible, God had a hand in making sure that this film did justice to Himself and His Son. No other depiction of Christ on screen even comes close to the performance given by Robert Powell in this made for tv miniseries directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The dvd is quite good and features the complete miniseries as it originally aired on television back in 1977. My highest recommendation.

Bill Murray's Best Performance
on April 13, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
'Groundhog Day' is easily Bill Murray's best performance in my opinion, and it's a film that just about everyone should see and enjoy at least once. This release of the film contains a new high-def transfer and some other bonus features (of which I'm not personally a fan), but overall it isn't really worth buying if you already own the previous special edition dvd.

A Classic!

I firmly believe that every person needs to see this film regardless of who they are. Easily one of the greatest films ever made, it clearly deserves the recognition it earned over the years. It is hard to believe that this film was deemed both a critical and box office disappointment when it was initially released.
There are several dvd versions that have been released over the years, my personal preference for picture quality is the 1998 Republic Pictures version, but any of the more recent versions are fine too, as they almost all contain the same bonus features as the original disc. Whatever you do, only watch the film in its original black & white, the colorized versions have been awful!

A wonderful animated fable for the whole family to enjoy, Director Brad Bird's The Iron Giant receives a belated but welcome special-edition release from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. It may have been a long time coming, but this feature-packed disc undoubtedly deserves a place on the shelf of any fan. The feature is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, and it looks better than ever -- sporting a remarkably clean transfer with bold, vivid colors that seem to leap from the screen. English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio offers a clean mix of music and dialogue with the occasional, effective directional effect, with an alternate French Dolby Digital 5.1 also included. A commentary track with director Brad Bird, story-department heads Jeffrey Lynch and Steven Markowski, and head of animation Tony Fucile provides the filmmakers a chance to discuss their motivations with the film, and the track is alternately entertaining and informative. Journey further into the world of the Iron Giant with eight additional scenes, which even half-finished offer a tantalizing look at what the filmmakers could have accomplished given a little more time and a bigger budget. There's some truly inventive stuff here, and a dream sequence with the giant proves especially intriguing in its potential. It's too bad many of these scenes didn't make it into the film because as opposed to most deleted scenes, one really feels like these moments would have added great character depth while also entertaining the viewer. No less than 13 branching featurettes offer viewers the opportunity to interact with the feature by selecting a nuts and bolts icon that appears on the screen from time to time, and unpredictable storyboard-department animator Teddy Newton delves into the creative process in a pair of insightful featurettes. Fellow animators will no doubt relish the opportunity to take a peek at the actual animation process in additional featurettes, and viewers can join Vin Diesel behind the microphone as he and director Bird discuss the creative process. A trailer lovingly cut by director Bird himself gives greater emotional impact than the also included theatrical trailer, and DVD-ROM features will have viewers exploring and enjoying this wonderful release for many hours after they have taken in the main attraction.

Best Animated Film Ever! Hands Down!
on April 13, 2008

This film is by far the best animated film I have ever seen. All I can say is buy it, watch it with your kids (or yourself for that matter if you don't have kids), and you'll thank me after. Beautiful animation, top-notch voice acting, and incredible direction make this film the superior piece it is. Like the 'Toy Story' films, 'The Iron Giant' is a perfect example of why animated films should be allowed to contend for the 'Best Picture Oscar', because I can guarantee you there was not a single film in 1999 that compared to the quality of this film in terms of story, effects, sound, and music. This film could have and should have been nominated for several oscars. A great dvd package is offered here for a film that is nothing short of spectacular, and the film deserves every bit of attention that has been given it on this disc.

Joseph Zito directed Chuck Norris in the action blockbuster Invasion USA, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has also been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials are limited to the original theatrical trailer. Although there is not much on this disc, the inexpensive list price and high quality picture make it worthwhile for any genre enthusiast or Norris fan.

Oh Chuck...sigh
on April 13, 2008

If you want to know why those goofy quotes about Chuck Norris are circulating in such large numbers on the internet...you know, like "many people wear Superman pajamas...but Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas" or "Chuck Norris has counted to infinity...twice," then you need to watch this movie, which really is the epitome as to the type of caliber of productions Norris associated himself with throughout most of his film career. Awful in every way possible, this film is so poorly done that you actually will find it hysterically funny. But that is why I like this movie, and I'm sure its the same for other fans of his films as well. I'm not quite sure I'll ever understand how Chuck landed his movie roles (other than his cameo appearance in Bruce Lee's 'Return of the Dragon'), but I guess if he hadn't we wouldn't have all his atrocious movies to keep us light of humor. I really like Chuck and had my picture taken with him when I was a kid, and I think he is a genuinely good person, but I really must admit that I'm not sure if movies were what he was cut out for. Apparently, there are many movie studios, some of which I would imagine are out of business, that would disagree with me.

There can only be one, and for DVD fans it may as well be Anchor Bay's "Immortal DVD Edition" of the sci-fi action classic Highlander. This 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer appears solid and well-produced, though small imperfections (including dirt and edge enhancement) tend to show up during the viewing. However, this transfer is miles above Anchor Bay's previous DVD edition from 2000. The audio is presented in two newly created DTS 5.1 and Dolby 5.1 Surround soundtracks. Each of these soundtracks feature a new barrage of directional effects that sometimes sound manipulated, though often work well in the confines of the film. All aspects of these soundtracks are free and clear of excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc is a Dolby 2.0 Surround soundtrack in French as well as English closed captioning. The extra features on this edition of Highlander start with a commentary track by director Russell Mulcahy and producers William N. Panzer and Peter S. Davis. The three men seem to have a lot to say about the production and story, including some funny anecdotes about co-star Sean Connery. Two trailers for the film and a still gallery featuring images from the film and the band Queen are included, as well as a few talent biographies on the stars and director. Finally there are three entertaining music videos by the rock group Queen, a bonus CD with three songs by Queen, and a THX optimizer to help you set up your TV and stereo. This entire package comes inside of a handsome fabricated metal slipcase.

Where is the Original U.S. Theatrical Version?
on April 13, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
'Highlander' is one of those films that is definitely an acquired taste, but its fan base knows who they are, and they really, really like the picture. Disagreement on final cut of the film between the producers and director led to several different versions of the film being released. I was a personal fan of the U.S. theatrical version (which is strangely absent from this dvd release), and while I too usually enjoy seeing director's cuts, this is one instance where the director was dead wrong in his decisons on certain scenes, and it shows. The U.S. Theatrical version of Highlander was a fun, fast, and mysterious type of film, while this Director's Cut really slows things down and adds in some really unnecessary extra footage. Bottom line, if you're going to release a dvd, at least give us the theatrical version too.

Good Story, Classic 80's
on April 13, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
This is a film that, although it is B-grade in every way, still hits the heart every time I watch it. Fans of 80's films will most likely enjoy it if they haven't yet seen it already. A good story with some really good laughs and great moral values help this film right along. The dvd offers nothing in terms of extras, and the anamorphic video isn't the best, but given how relatively little this film is known, we should be happy we got what we did.

Bill Murray is having one of those days -- over and over and over again -- in the comedy hit Groundhog Day, released a second time by Columbia in a new "special edition" DVD. The 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer looks very good with only minor imperfections hindering the picture. A small amount of edge enhancement and grain show up during a few scenes, though overall this is a very nice-looking picture with bright colors and even black levels. The audio is presented in a newly created Dolby 5.1 mix as well as a DTS 5.1 Surround soundtrack (in French, Portuguese, English, and Spanish). Both of these soundtracks feature some nice surround utilization by both the front and back speakers, as well as clear and distortion-free dialogue, music, and effects. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, French, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, and Portuguese. Whereas the original DVD release of Groundhog Day only included a few scant extras, this new Groundhog Day: Special Edition DVD features a few more substantial extra features. Included on this disc are the typical theatrical trailers, cast and crew filmographies, and production notes. Newly produced for this disc is a 25-minute documentary titled "The Weight of Time," which includes new retrospective interviews with director Harold Ramis, actors Andie MacDowell and Stephen Tobolowsky, writer Danny Rubin, and producer Trevor Albert. This is a very nice documentary that includes funny anecdotes and stories about the production. Finally, there is a new commentary track by director Harold Ramis, which features the director chatting about the difficulties in making the movie, how it was working with star Bill Murray, and other tidbits about the movie. Taken as a whole, this new Groundhog Day: Special Edition DVD is a great disc for fans of the movie to own (though Bill Murray's non-participation in the new extra features is a bummer).

This special edition re-release of Gremlins is a vast improvement over the original disc. To begin with, the image, which is framed at the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, shows clear signs of the new digital transfer. Colors are sharp and vibrant (though maybe a little over saturated at times) with blacks that are solid. Overall the immediate impression of the picture is better than would be expected. The sound, which uses the same 5.1 English track from the original release, is certainly good, but never takes advantage of the entire sound field. It's generally centered up front, but is distortion free and produces clear audio. The main difference between releases is obviously the supplemental features. Whereas the first disc was basically movie only, this one has a number of nice features. At the top of the list would have to be two new commentary tracks. The first is enthusiastic and informational with director Joe Dante and actors Zach Galligan, Howie Mandel, and the less heard Phoebe Cates and Dick Miller. The second is a little more technical, but nevertheless entertaining with Dante again, producer Michael Finnell, and special effects artist Chris Walas. The rest of the extras, while good, are less spectacular. Along with ten minutes of deleted scenes with optional commentary is a six-minute featurette with behind-the-scenes shots and interviews, a photo/storyboard gallery, and cast and crew biographies. Rounding this nice package out are three trailers, two for this film and one for the sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

They Don't Make 'Em Like This Anymore
on April 13, 2008

'Gremlins' has always been an underrated film in my opinion, even though it was a relative box office success. The reason being, this was an incredibly difficult and painstaking production that ultimately turned out a very high quality product, especially given the time it was made. While special effects fans are sure to delight the most, just about everyone can appreciate and enjoy this movie which is quite good overall. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the sequel did not live up to the standard set by the original. This is a superb dvd release, featuring a good widescreen transfer and two excellent commentaries, as well as a nice selection of other extras that are sure to please any fan of the film.
