Mel Gibson's Academy award-winning epic Braveheart comes to DVD in a fairly basic presentation that includes a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround Audio, and a commentary by Gibson. A "making of" featurette and two theatrical trailers complete this adequate disc. With any luck, a deluxe version of the DVD will be released in the not too distant future; Braveheart deserves better.

I Don't Understand the 'Craze' For This Film
on May 12, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I've never understood all the people who consider 'Braveheart' to be their all-time favorite movie, because it's just not that outstanding in my opinion. I was shocked it won all the Oscars it did, especially for 'Best Picture,' but at the same time, it's not the worst movie I've ever seen, and fans should enjoy this dvd with some acceptable bonus features including commentary.

This three-pack of DVDs contains the adventures of Detroit cop Axel Foley. Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop II, and Beverly Hills Cop III are available individually, but this set offers a cost-effective way to acquire all three titles. Each film is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves their original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are available on each of the three discs. All of them come with basic extras, but only the first film comes with a director's commentary track. This is an entertaining package for anyone who does not already have these films.

I Only Liked the First Film

I can't really endorse this Boxset, because I only felt the first film was good and you can buy it for $7. However, for fans of the entire trilogy, this one is probably worth the buy.

Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop III, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include interviews and a theatrical trailer. While this Paramount release will not win the film any new supporters, this solid disc will entertain fans of the film.

Looks Like It Was Made For Cable
on May 12, 2008

'Beverly Hills Cop III' is a dismal disappointment, even when compared to the second film of the series, which was also quite weak. This final installment in the trilogy starring Eddie Murphy looks as though it was almost made for cable TV.

Not Nearly As Good As the First
on May 12, 2008

As is often the case, this sequel to the succesful and very popular 'Beverly Hills Cop' is a larger and more expensive production than the original, but just not as good. Widescreen.

Wisecracking Detroit cop Axel Foley begins his adventures in the action/comedy hit Beverly Hills Cop. Paramount has done a nice job of cleaning up this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen print. While some grain and imperfections abound, overall this is a good-looking transfer with minimal edge enhancement and bright-looking colors. The audio is presented in a newly mixed Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 in English and French. The new 5.1 soundtrack is passable, though it's mainly composer Harold Faultermeyer's techno-pop score that is filtered through the front and rear speakers. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are distortion free and very clear. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English. This is a "special collector's edition" of Beverly Hills Cop, and as such includes some interesting special features. To start with, there is a commentary track by director Martin Brest that is both informative and insightful (with only a few gaps of dead silence during the feature). "Beverly Hills Cop: The Phenomenon Begins" is a somewhat self-serving documentary that includes interviews with Martin Brest, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Daniel Petrie Jr., and actors Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, and in a limited fashion, Eddie Murphy. This retrospective is interesting, though many of the participants tend to dote on star Eddie Murphy a bit too much. "A Glimpse Into the Casting Process" is a short piece of how the film was cast, and "The Music of Beverly Hills Cop" takes a look at what it took to get both the music score and famous rock songs into the movie. Finally, there is a location map with production information by designer Angelo Graham, a limited still gallery with stills and photos from the movie, and a theatrical trailer for the film. This may not be the definitive DVD of Beverly Hills Cop, but it should please fans in general.

The Only Good Film of the Series

I liked the first 'Beverly Hills Cop,' and personally thought it was the only really good film of the series. Probably Eddie Murphy's best movie. Widescreen.

Sylvester Stallone is a time-sleeper with a twist as he chases a vicious killer into the future in this humorous sci-fi thriller from Warner Home Video. Presented in the original 2.35:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio (anamorphically enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs) and with a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this release also features an additional Spanish Dolby Digital Mono track and optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. Extra features include a feature-length commentary track with director Marco Brambilla and producer Joel Silver, production notes, and theatrical trailers.

Another Movie That Tanked
on May 12, 2008

Here's another sub-standard Stallone action film, that takes place in the future and co-stars Wesley Snipes. I'm not surprised that this one tanked at the box office. Skip it.

Space Jam, which brought together the acting skills of Warner Bros.' beloved cartoon characters and basketball superstar Michael Jordan, gets the deluxe treatment on this DVD. The image is a full-frame 1.33:1 transfer. Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks are available in English, Spanish, and French. Subtitles are available in those three languages as well. The most entertaining bonus feature is the commentary track from director Joe Pytka, Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck. The music gets much attention in the supplemental material with videos for "Fly Like an Eagle," "I Believe I Can Fly," and "Monstars Anthem," as well as a music-only audio track. The theatrical trailer and production notes are also included. DVD-ROM PC features, including the Looney Tune website, round out this inviting package.

Fans Will Want the 2-Disc Edition Instead
on May 12, 2008

the only thing I really liked about 'Space Jam' was that Bill Murray was his usual hilarious self in it. Other than that, this just isn't a very well done feature of animation blended with live action. Fans will probably want to skip this dvd version and buy the 2-disc special edition.

Richard Gere and Sean Connery star in the action-romance First Knight. The film is presented in both 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen as well as a cropped 1.33:1 full-frame version. The widescreen presentation looks grand with vibrant colors and dark black levels throughout. While a small amount of edge enhancement pops up once in a while, overall this is a very clean transfer without any major defects or blemishes. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and is, to say the least, great. With bombastic sound effects enveloping the viewer and a vast array of Surround sounds leaking out of both the front and rear speakers, fans of the film will get a kick out of this mix if they own a home theater system. Thankfully, all aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtracks in French, English, and Spanish, as well as Korean and Spanish subtitles. Because the film was so costly and bombed upon its initial theatrical release, Columbia has decided not to include a single solitary supplement on this edition of First Knight.

Blah...

'First Knight' did absolutely nothing for me. Considering the material the film had to work with, and the cast, I'm somewhat shocked it turned out as poorly as it did. Fans may want to purchase the more recent special edition which offers bonus material not available here.
