New favorite gaming mouse
on September 19, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
Honestly, I've always been a Razer fan and have a full compliment of Razer RGB gaming accessories. RGB improves gaming performance and frame rates; it's just science!
Lately I have gravitated back to my Logitech G915 and wanted a mouse to pair with it.
The G502 X Plus has made me a Logitech believer!
Comfort and ergonomics are perfect for me. My hands are on the small side, and I somtimes have problems with the main buttons when my hand is positioned correctly. No such issues here, and this mouse holds my hands in a comfortable position that allows me to play or work for an extended time.
Of course it works with the same software I use to set up the Logtiech keyboard. Some of the light settings can be synced between the mouse and keyboard which makes them both pulse at the same rate and time. Pretty slick.
The lighting is bright but tastefully muted in a good way. The lighted area is a Y-shaped section near the back of the mouse and looks great.
The switches all have a really satisfying click to them with a slight metallic "P-TING!" sound. There's a button on top that toggles the wheel from clicky to smooth. I prefer clicky for gaming and smooth for browsing, so I love having the option. There's a side button to shift DPI on the fly (great for aiming) that can be popped out and mounted the other way to make it easier to hit or harder to accidentally hit, depending on how you want it. It comes with a second longer one that can be swapped out. It's a nice touch, but now I have a tiny button to keep track of if I want to swap it in the future.
I LOVE that this is recharged via USB-C and works with any cable instead of the proprietary one with the notch in it that a couple of my other mice take. Sometimes I like to use it with my Steam Deck and I like that i can use the same charger I use with the Deck to charge the mouse.
This is a lightspeed mouse, meaning it works with a dongle using Logitech's lightspeed connection. It does not support bluetooth at all, so you will need to keep track of the dongle if you're mobile. There's a magnetic door on the bottom that reveals a magnetic dongle port inside. It will rattle around inside if you don't get it in just right. It will also apparently work with a (not-included) wireless charger.
I do wish it would work with the lightspeed dongle for the keyboard so I only need one plugged in. I would love to just use one port. If it's possible to do that I haven't figured it out yet.
Great mouse, and a perfect compliment to a Logitech gaming keyboard

Great for cat litter
on September 19, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
We've been through 2-3 stick vacs so far, and this has been the most successful of them.
Our main use is for around our cat's litter box. Even though it's a covered box, she somehow still gets most of the litter outside the opening and then tracks it around the living room. For this reason we keep a stick vac charging next to the litter box so we can touch up after litter changes.
Here's the problem; stick vacs tend to suck up the litter into the tube and then drop a bunch of it again once you release the suction. It gets worse over time as the filter gets clogged up, but in the past this kept happening even with a fresh vacuum.
This one, on the other hand, is a keeper! There are three levels of suction and the highest is extremely powerful and pulls the litter into the chamber enough to keep most of it from falling back out. The pre-filter does start to get clogged fairly fast (cat litter is a vacuum torture test, so I won't hold it against them!) so it requires rinsing and drying every couple washes. Luckily it's really easy to remove and clean.
Emptying is simple, just dangle the chamber over the garbage can and pop the latch and the bottom drops along with the dust. Pretty standard as far as stick-vacs go.
Assembly pretty much requires plugging the components into each other and charging. It came with a nice hanging station that holds the vacuum and the tools, but I haven't used it. There's no plave for me to hang it in that area, so I don't use it.
I did notice that the run time is considerably shorter on the highest setting than the lowest (which makes sense!) but since we're mostly using this in a small area for quick cleanups. The litter box is on carpet, but we've used this on out hardwood floors adjacent to the room with the same success.
If you have cats, I would highly recommend giving this vacuum a try. I would also recommend it for similar messes, like sand if you live in a beach area.

Great for Gaming on the Go
on September 19, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
I was happy to receive these about the same time as my new Steam Deck, which they're currently paired with.
For the initial setup I connected them with my Galaxy Z Fold 3 using the Turtle Beach app. They connected immediately and the app told me I needed an update before using them. The update was straightforward and the app did all of the work. You need to leave the buds in the case with the lid open to update them. Fortunately the case is actually designed to stand up with the lid open. It's a small detail that other TW earbud cases seem to miss, so I appreciate it here.
From there I paired them with the Steam Deck for gaming. What's really cool is that the smartphone app still works when they're paired to the Deck, so I'm able to change the equalizer and turn game mode on and off.
Game mode cuts down on latency, seeming at the expense of connection stability. I experienced some stuttering when it was on. The connection was rock-solid with it on, but lip-sync was off a little. I did notice that toggling it on then off improved lip sync and gave me the added benefit of the better stability. Perhaps this is something that can be improved with future firmware updates, or is just an issue with the Steam Deck.
Sound quality is very good and skews toward gaming rather than music. Highs and lows are emphasized (and you can boos them even more with the EQ presets in the app) and they have a good cinematic quality to them. In this way they're perfect for action games and watching movies on the go.
The fit and sound blocking is very good. They're not active noise cancelling but they do a good job of blocking noise if you get a good fit. I've found that these require a little twist to get a perfect seal and are comfortable once they're in.
Charging is via USB-C (Yay!) and these don't appear to be able to be wireless charged. They come with a nice USB charging cable.
The case is nice and all of the surfaces except the bottom are rounded so it slips into and out of pockets easily. Again, it stand on end nicely, even with the top open. If you have a Steam Deck, the case fits nicely into the cavity on the back of the included SD case under the elastic to secure it!
I've tried it out with a few games and it really helps to give you a sense of direction and atmosphere, especially in particularly immersive games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Halo MCC where knowing where you're taking damage from is important.
I would highly recommend these for mobile gaming on systems like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch and mobile phone games. Battery life is very good so you don't need to worry about losing the charge while on a commute.

The direct-drive analogue turntable was first achieved worldwide by Technics. It alleviated issues such as signal-to-noise ratio and wow and flutter, which had until then posed problems for turntables. This turntable attracted interest for its high performance and reliability, and left a considerable track record, including use by broadcast stations. The performance and track record of the direct-drive turntable continues unabated to the present day, with support by numerous audiophiles. With a direct-drive system, the sound of the turntable can be even further enhanced. This is the uncompromising attitude and confidence of Technics, the creator of direct drive. Development of the SL-1210G thus began. The latest technologies have been added to solve issues involved with direct-drive systems, such as cogging. The SL-1210G includes a newly developed coreless direct-drive motor with greatly increased precision by incorporating Blu-ray Disc technology for rotation control. This cutting-edge direct-drive system will surpass previous direct-drive systems. It is not a reproduction but innovation. We are redefining the reference in direct-drive turntables for the modern age.

Sonic Bliss
on September 11, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
I've been using a very well-regarded vintage Denon DP-51f for years, equipped with a Grado Prestige Black cartridge and upgraded to the Technics a few days ago. I've never been one to tout how much better vinyl can sound than high definition digital files until now. All I can say is wow!
Even though I'm using the same cartridge it sounds like a veil has been lifted from the sound. Listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album is an experience. Cymbals are crisp and defined without a hint of sibilance and drums have a subtle definition to them, not just a "thud." I can actually hear the tension on the drum heads and the detailed "ring" that come out of them. Vocals are amazing, and acoustic guitar sounds like it's in the room. Separation is nothing less than amazing.
Backing up a little, I'm running the turntable into a Cambridge Audio AXA35 with built-in phono stage into a set of Vienna Bach speakers, which are similar in many way to Totem Forest speakers and were once sold through Magnolia in the USA. This combination is working well with the turntable. It should be noted that the Grado Black is known to have a bit of a hum, but I am not hearing it at all with this turntable.
As soon as I received the box I knew this was going to be something special. The delivery driver wanted to be sure we were home before she took it off the truck because it is so heavy. Indeed, it weighs in at almost 40 pounds.
A good potion of that weight is actually the platter. It's made in layers with an attractive brass upper layer that I hated to hide under the slip mat. On the bottom of the platter is a sticker indicating that it was specifically balanced at the factory to eliminate any extra vibrations. The chassis is also extremely heavy and obviously engineered to keep the whole thing as stable as possible. I can't state enough how solidly this whole thing is built. In photos it looks very similar to one of Technics' DJ tables, but this is anything but!
Once everything is unpacked there's some assembly to be done. The platter is packed separately, as is the lid. The platter is secured with three screws and locking washers and the lid just slides into place.
There is no cartridge included, so you will need to supply one and mount it yourself. I did appreciate that they included the hardware to mount the cartridge as I immediately lost one of the nuts from my old setup. Also included is an overhang gauge so you can set that up properly. I guess they assume this is an upgrade rather than a first turntable so you are likely to have a good cartridge. That's understandable, but at this price point it may have been nice to include other setup tools like a protractor and azimuth gauge. It also comes with an audio cable, but it's nothing special. The power cable is very hefty and is one of the grounded 3-prong type. There's also a ground cable included. I like that the cable is not built in like my Denon's which has developed connection issues.
Speaking of setup, be sure to get yourself the proper tools to ensure perfect alignment. When I first set up the turntable I eyeballed the position of the cartridge and was disappointed by some inner-grove distortion which I chalked up to the Grado since it's a known issue. I ordered a protractor overnight and checked. Sure enough it was off just enough. Once corrected the IGD is no longer an issue at all.
Again, I can't get over how amazing LPs I've listened to dozens of times before sound now. I know it's cliche, but I'm hearing them all for the first time again and noticing details I hadn't in the past. I've been chasing good sound for years with high-res digital files and DACs, but this is really the end game for me.
One example is the first cut on Porcupine Tree's In Absentia album, Blackest Eyes. I always use this as a test track because it starts with a loud distorted guitar and heavy crash symbols. On lesser gear it has a grating, splashy sound, and on good gear it's less so. On this turntable the tone of the guitar is detailed and granular and the crash symbols have a shimmery dimension I've never heard. This is truly how it was supposed to sound.
Last night I rediscovered Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album. His trumpet sounded almost live, and the breathiness of the saxophones came to life.
I'm still getting used to the fact that this is a fully manual turntable, but I get the impression Technics wanted to eliminate absolutely anything that could get in the way of perfect mechanical performance, so I can respect that!
I'm really glad to have hung on to all of my old vinyl LPs and have taken care of them since the 80s. This is very much a piece of "endgame" hifi gear and is highly, highly recommended if you're looking for something to perfectly compliment a carefully curated LP collection. Do not give this turntable a second though, just set it up and listen to your collection for the first time all over again!

Decent Near-Field Monitors
on September 11, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
I've been in the market for some small but powerful desktop monitors and had an opportunity to check these out. So far I've been happy with them with some tweaks.
My first use was on my desktop with my gaming laptop, which I use for both gaming and listening to music when I'm at the desk. The signal path was laptop>USB>SMSL DAC X6>Line Out>JBL speakers.
The JBLs were excellent for both gaming and music with a little tweaking with an EQ (I use the Peace desktop EQ on Windows 11) to bring out the bass and drop the mids a bit. Mids are very forward, but not in a bad way. They are just not exactly neutral. Games had decent rumble and music was overall very nice to listen to. Separation was great with the speakers at arms length as suggested in the directions. I like that the connection from the active speaker to the passive one uses a standard (included) 2-element speaker cable so you can customize the length and aren't constrained by a built-in cable. I have a 32:9 ultrawide monitor and its hard to find speakers that can spread out wide enough with a built-in cable.
The back has a couple inputs, namely RCA stereo and dual mono 1/4 jacks. These also have decent Bluetooth connectivity. One really great feature is that you can select an individual input or all of them at the same time, including the BT sound.
I've also used these to listen to the output of my Mooer desktop guitar effects processor using the 1/4 inch jacks. Because I'm able to mix that signal with the Bluetooth it makes it perfect for playing along with music from my phone. There's also a headphone jack for late nights where I want to play guitar or games and not wake up the rest of the house.
Build quality is superb. They have some heft to them so any distortion is kept to a minimum. They're just the right size for desktop use and look good next to a computer monitor without taking up too much space or looking comically small. Also, thank you, JBL, for using a standard power cord rather than an outboard AC adaptor!
I would highly recommend these for a small-space music production desk or even for serious gaming. My only wish would to add a sub-woofer output to give me the option to add a little more low-end.

My favorite TW Earbuds yet!
on September 9, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
I have a fairly big collection of true wireless earbuds, ranging from AirPod Pros, Sony XMs and Devaliets, among some other brands like Soundcore which punch well above their weight. So far the Bose QuietComfort II are my favorite of the bunch hands down.
I also collect headphones (Meze Audio Neo 99 are my current favorites) and consider myself to be an audiophile. I know Bose sometimes gets an undeservedly bad reputation by purists, but I'm glad I gave these a chance.
Overall sound quality is very good. These have a "fun" sound signature and add some color to music in an engaging way. Highs are a bit forward but in no way harsh. I like to test headphones using Porcupine Tree's "Blackest Eyes" for high end. The song starts out with a loud distorted guitar riff that falls apart and sounds painful in most headphones. The Bose preserve the tone of the guitar well and provides good resolution without falling apart.
Mids have that signature Bose sound with slightly pronounced midrange, but nothing out of line. The Bose app includes a three-band EQ to customize sound. I ended up lowering the high end quite a bit and I emphasized the low-end. I know as an audiophile I'm supposed to value "neutral" sound, but face it, I like a lot of bass, and these deliver!
Testing with more Porcupine Tree I was blown away with the subtle kick drums at the beginning of "Herd Culling" which had a nice, well-defined thump to them. Sub-bass really shines on these and anyone into EDM or hard rock would really enjoy them. I have yet to find a genre that they don't handle well.
Comfort is top-notch. Out of the box I got a good seal and fit with the ear-tips and bands that were on them. Just in case, though, there is a lot of extras included for the perfect fit. I usually start to get itchy and have to remove IEMs for a little bit every once in a while, but have no problem with the QuietComforts. They somehow fit tightly without any pressure anywhere. I've been getting back into shape and jogged a little with them in and they are definitely not going anywhere.
The charging case is a little big, but is rounded and set up in a way that makes it easy to get into and out of a pocket. It includes USB-C charging, but no wireless charging capability. I do wish I could just throw them on a QI charger, but that's a minor complaint. Everything else about them is perfect!
Mine had a day-1 software upgrade that I applied before using the first time. Be advised that the first update took me a lot longer than I had anticipated, so don't panic when you update yours. They're fine!
Now for the important part: the noise cancellation! Noise cancellation on these is nothing short of miraculous and they bested my Sony XM series, which I didn't think was possible. For fun I turned it up all the way and then cranked my stereo in the same room and couldn't hear it at all. I like that the app allows you to tune the noise cancellation to your liking and save it as a preset. Then you can select presets by tapping the earbud itself rather than opening the app, which is really handy in a lot of situations. There's also a transparency mode so you can safely hear around you. Unlike some other earbuds and headphones music sounds the same with NC on or off. There is a slight hiss with NC on and no music playing, but its not noticeable when music is playing. These are perfect for public transit or airplane use.
Don't hesitate on these. If you're looking for the best noise cancelling TW earbuds for overall usage these are them!

Looks much better in person
on July 15, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
I'm starting to amass a collection of gaming mice. I'm a sucker for RGB stuff and try to walk that fine line between RGB everything and gaudy. That said, this is one of my favorite mice, both aesthetically and functionality.
Don't go by the picture on the website. While it's a pretty accurate representation of how the lighting looks it actually looks much better in person. The hexagonal pattern is under a dark translucent layer that gives the light a cool shadowy look.
Connectivity is through Bluetooth or a wireless dongle that stows underneath. I always appreciate the ability to store the dongle in the mouse as I use a gaming laptop and I like to remove the dongles before I throw it in a bag just in case. It's a little hard to get out once it's in there, but that's probably a good thing.
Everything is customizable through the Roccat Swarm software that you can download from their website. I had a day-one update to apply through the software that, according to their release notes, improves stability and battery life.
I set up a slow fade through colors to go with my other RGB peripherals and it looks great. The lighting is bright and the colors are very deep and attractive. The whole mouse lights up as do the sides of the scroll wheel. I like the way it looks compared to my other mice which are kind of subtle and have thin strips of light or just a colored logo.
The app also shows battery level and signal strength. If you keep your PC under a desk it'll help you to determine if you're getting the best wireless performance, which is nice.
Additionally you can customize the 8 available buttons on the mouse through the software, as well as the polling rate and the different DPI presets from the DPI buttons. You can even set up alternate button functions for a total of 16 customizations. Admittedly I never use these and tend to be simple about mouse actions when gaming.
I'm not usually a fan of lightweight gaming mice, but the overall size and shape offset the weight nicely. Everyone's hands are different, but I find this one is exactly the right size for me to hold comfortably. For reference I have smaller hands and tend to have to "reach" for the front buttons on some mice. It also holds my hand in a very comfortable position and minimizes fatigue in long gaming sessions. The buttons have a satisfying click, but they do have to be pressed a little farther than some of my other mice. Again, this is a personal preference, but I like having a hair-trigger when I'm gaming.
I've never tried out Roccat gaming stuff, but based on my impressions from this mouse I'm really impressed and will likely check out more stuff!

No more lock-outs!
on July 15, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
This is a great addition to the Wyze lock and will make it difficult for you or your family members to accidentally lock yourself out. If you don't have your key or phone with you all you do is need to remember your code to get back in. If you forget that, then you're out of luck!
It probably goes without saying, but just in case, this is an accessory for the Wyze lock and will not work with anything else. Pairing with the Wyze lock is pretty easy and the app will walk you through that. Once it's set up you can both unlock and lock the door without a key or phone and you can just leave your phone in your pocket when interacting with the door.
Mounting is fairly simple. There is double back-tape that sticks it up while you screw it into the wall. In my case I should have wiped down the wall first, as my dusty garage wall didn't hold the tape well and it fell off while I was trying to screw it in. I would not rely on using just the tape to hold it permanently, as it will probably eventually fall off or can be easily swiped by a bad-actor.
I ended up screwing mine in and then wasn't happy with how the screws secured into the drywall near the door so I ended up unscrewing it and using a couple drywall anchors. Now it's not going anywhere.
Prior to setting up the Wyze lock and keypad we tended to keep the garage door unlocked in case someone left without a key. The problem is if someone forced their way into the garage they could get into the house. Now we have the peace of mind that we can keep that door locked but no one will get locked out.

Wyze Lock is a staple in our smart home wizardry. This is a smart lock that that does what you expect, and really all that you need from a smart lock. Wyze Lock is Wi-Fi capable, so you can control it remotely from your phone to let the dog walker in, or make sure it gets locked after you left on your vacation in such a rush. That’s not all this bad boy can do. Wyze Lock comes equipped with App and knows when you arrive home and automatically unlocks as you approach the door. Once inside, Wyze Lock’s built-in gyroscope detects when the door is closed and automatically locks behind you. It’s got all that and more. Like we said, all the tech you need, now at a price you can afford.

Great way to add wireless to an existing deadbolt
on July 15, 2022
Posted by: Nerdninja
Having swapped out locks a few times on my doors I was confident I would be able to install this but was ready for the usual struggle. Happily that was not the case!
One of the unique things about the Wyze lock is that it repurposes most of your existing hardware. You simply remove the inside door portion that you usually lock by hand and replace it with the Wyze lock box. There are a couple adaptors inside the box to account for different lock types. Mine is D-shaped and worked with one adaptor, and there is another for round stems, or whatever they're called. Then you just re-use the screws that you removed from the inside toggle to screw in the Wyze box. Just add batteries and you're done!
Also in the box is a wifi bridge to add the lock to your wifi network. This is probably my only complaint, so I'm starting to accumulate too many bridges for other devices, but that's a first-world problem to be sure.
Once the bridge is connected and the lock is on your network you can control it via Google Assistant on an Android Phone or via Amazon Alexa. The great part is that you can also check the status of the lock via voice (or in the app) so when I'm lying in bed and can't remember if I locked the door I can just ask the Echo on my nightstand.
There is also a feature to auto-unlock the door if your phone is with you via bluetooth, but I have not had a chance to set that up and try it for reliability. It seems like something that would benefit my kid who always has his phone with him.
I do wish it was a little more attractive. I have mine set up on my garage door which is hidden away in a laundry room, but I don't think I would put this on my nice front door.
There is a keypad which is an additional purchase that I would recommend with it. If someone gets locked out without a phone it's simple to regain entry that way!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good basic case

I picked this up to protect my son's iPhone 13 Pro. As a basic hard shell case it does the job well.
It's a good thick clear plastic and seems like the kind of plastic that won't yellow after a while like some cheaper cases. So far it seems to be fairly scratch resistant, as it doesn't have anything more than a few hairline scratches after the first week or so. Not sure how it will hold up over time.
Getting the phone in is a little tight, but that's a good thing as it won't come out of the case on accident. I feel pretty confident that between the rubber bumpers on the corners and the thick plastic that his iPhone will survive his daily 1-2 drops onto the hard ground. Getting it out is a little tricky, but most people don't switch cases that often.
The sides are a nice grippy soft rubber. It provides a nice secure grip to the phone, but it sometimes makes it hard for him to pull out of his pocket quickly. If you have tight pockets you may not want something this grippy.
The only real complaint he has, and this is a deal-breaker for him, is that it doesn't have the magsafe circle on the back like some cases, so he's not able to use his Apple magsafe battery pack. If magsafe isn't a concern for you, I would highly recommend the case for it's sturdiness, but otherwise you won't be able to use your accessories.

Yes, it's designed for phones and I don't see an easy way to mount a camera of any kind

Will this work with an iPhone 12Max with a Mous Limitless 3.0 case. Anyone foolish enough to use any gimble w/o some sort of protection is just asking for trouble IMO. I really want to pick one up but not if it won’t work with a case.

I don't know about that specific case, but the magnetic clip seems to work with every case I've thrown at it on my S21 Ultra.

That said, the clip and magnet are really strong and I would feel comfortable trusting them under most conditions

See more of the action with this Full HD ASUS gaming monitor. Quick 1 ms video response time lets you play action games in real time without lag. This ASUS gaming monitor comes with a stand for use on any flat surface.

I recently purchased this monitor from my local Bestbuy, and I cannot get audio through it. Does this monitor have built-in speakers? I am unable to find information online regarding whether this monitor has integrated speakers.

It does not have speakers. There is a headphone jack on the back you can connect to amplified speakers

Do I need to buy a pc box for this or dose it come with a built in pc or is it just a screen

This is just a monitor. It needs to be connected to a PC, either a desktop or a laptop (as a second screen)
