Must have for sci fi fans, and western fans
on May 12, 2008

This movie was awesome, i never got the chance to see it in theaters, the theatrical run was short lived sad to say. I saw the movie on tv, and i loved it. I later learned that it had a tv series behind it. The writing is so well done you wouldn't notice at first. I got a chance to borrow the series from a friend and i fell even more in love with this franchise, if that were possible. The series is also a good choice and available at best buy, conveniently, which is where i later picked up my own copy. The effects and story are excellent. By all means enjoy this future sci fi western... thing... seriously, this is an excellent choice for any action or sci fi fan. That reminds me, the fight and battle scenes were excellent too.
What's great about it: A Sci Fi Western, like Han Solo meets David Carridine
What's not so great: I wish i got into this movie and series sooner.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Funny Stupid Movie
on May 12, 2008

This movie is full of dumb stupid comedy, but done so in a witty sense. A great movie to watch with friends so you can make fun of it. I must disagree with some reviews regarding expectation, only because i saw this movie with very few if any, so i guess its a matter of perspective. Though not anywhere near Borat or Super Troopers offensive, it doesn't pull punches either with language. If you like Super Troopers, and other such semi slapstick comedy, this is for you. Looking for serious somewhat realistic comedy, then there's plenty out there to choose. This is a good buy tough at the 7.50 price.
What's great about it: Funny and entertaining
What's not so great: so it's not an oscar winning artistic movie, but its fun

Excellent Movie, A MUST Have
on May 7, 2008

This movie has excellent fight sequences worthy of Troy or Lord of the Rings and even Braveheart for that matter. The music was well done and intense. Orlando Bloom plays a very different character than that of the one in Troy. Being that this movie was released shortly after Troy, and a subsequently less than popular performance in that film, many panned this wonderful film. This is a must have film, and the biggest disadvantage was the marketing for this film's theatrical release, which was hardly fair to the film itself. This film tells the story of the crusades, maybe not historically, but as any movie should, it gives you a window to look and see what that world was like. Buy this, you won't be dissappointed.
What's great about it: Excellent action and plot, well choreographed and well written
What's not so great: Not publicized enough when it was released

Richard Jeni: A Big Steaming Pile of Me features the highly respected and hard-working comic performing at Barclay Theater in Irvine, CA. He riffs on a variety of subjects including Americans' obsessions with weight, drug abuse, pornography, and the legal problems faced by Martha Stewart.

One of the best standups ever

One of the best stand up pieces ever. I watch these, and buy them, all the time. From Chris Rock, Richard Pryor, to Dennis Miller and Dane Cook, i love just about every one of them out there. This particular special was hilarious and very quotable. Unfortunately, some time after this special was made, maybe about a year, Mr. Jeni passed away. It's fortunate he left this world doing what he does best, making us laugh. Buy this, i gurantee you it won't dissappoint. If you like stand up comedy at all, you have to check this one out. I highly recommend this out of just about any other stand up piece.
What's great about it: Great fun comedy
What's not so great: This comedian has unfortunatley passed away

2nd Best Bond Film
on April 23, 2008

Ok, so some of the gadgets were as hokey and pointless as the Bat Anti Shark Spray, but you never know when you'll need to fight a shark in your Bat Copter. I digress, this film is incredible, it brings James Bond to the modern day and makes it realistic. He looks the part of a real assasin, and looks the part of a former gung ho stoic soldier. I can't wait for the sequel to come out, and this movie was one of the few that i had to have the day it came out, at full price, which is rare for my movie buying.
What's great about it: Loved the realism to this movie
What's not so great: Missed some gadgets

Like the TV series that shared the same title, The Untouchables (1987) was an account of the battle between gangster Al Capone and lawman Eliot Ness, this time in the form of a feature film boasting big stars, a big budget, and a script from respected playwright David Mamet. Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing. All of the credits for The Untouchables boasted big names, including music from Ennio Morricone and costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his tradition of including a homage to past masters of the cinema with a taut stairway shoot-out reminiscent of a similar sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925).

Classic

I stated the story was not historically accurate, not that it's a bad thing, only that the movie is based on the old tv show, not on the real eliott ness. Either way, i love this movie, each of the 4 Untouchables did a tremendous job. One of the few times you see Sean Connery without his toupee, he's worn one since the Bond films. De Niro played a perfect Capone as well.
What's great about it: The classic tale of Eliott Ness
What's not so great: Not historically accurate, see description

Mel Gibson stars in the heroic action film We Were Soldiers. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, and Paramount has done a great job of making sure this transfer is bright, clean, and clear of any defects or imperfections. The colors and black levels are all very well saturated and crisp, making this a very pleasing transfer. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX in English. This is a great surround sound mix that features tons of explosions, gunfire, and other effects rocketing around the viewer's head. Without any distortion or hiss in the mix, fans who own a surround sound system should be very pleased with this 5.1 track. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles, plus a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround mix in English. While not chock-full of extra feature, this DVD edition of We Were Soldiers includes a few well produced supplements starting with a commentary track by producer/writer/director Randall Wallace. This is a very insightful commentary track that features stories and anecdotes about the production of this brutal war drama. "Getting it Right" is a nearly half hour featurette about how the filmmakers tried for pure authenticity in the movie. This is a very intelligent and informative look behind-the-scenes of We Were Soldiers. Finally there are ten deleted/extended scenes with optional commentary by the director, each allowing the viewer a rare glimpse at what was cut from the final film. Surprisingly, the theatrical trailer for the film is missing from this disc.

Incredible war movie
on April 23, 2008

This movie takes the war era of vietnam and brings it to the modern audience today. Most people have all but forgotten the Korean War, and more and more people are thinking of vietnam as a couple of years that grandpa went off to war. Very few people identify with the sacrifices and hardships our fathers and grandfathers went through. This story is set on a real battle as far as my understanding goes, and is very accurate in the cinematics and storyline. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but more important than that, it gives a window into an era that most of us today cannot understand. This is what Saving Private Ryan did to help people see World War II with modern moviemaking. It helps immerse you into the experience, and this film does it. There is significant violence, bloodshed, and above all that the courage and actions of brave soldiers. Well worth the price by far.
What's great about it: A movie a guy is comfortable crying to

Best Roast of comedy central
on April 22, 2008

This is by far the funniest roast, you didn't even have to grow up following Pam Anderson or Tommy Lee, or Courtney Love, but it makes it funnier if you did. Awesome and hilarious, and well worth it. Buy this, you won't be disappointed.
What's great about it: Hilarious start to finish
What's not so great: none, though not a family friendly film

Awesome tell it like it is comedy

If you like Carlos Mencia, this is a must have. Hilarious and far more outrageous than any of his other stuff. Uncensor his comedy central stand up, and put deleted scenes back in, with an alternate opening. I love how he is an equal opportunity hater and makes fun of everyone. Half the time i'm offended and laughing at the same time.
What's great about it: Even stuff cut out of the comedy central secret stash
What's not so great: none

Good but not?

The film itself is great, and it scares you no matter if you're familiar with the original tale or not. Overall it was good, and even compares to the recent excorsist prequel. Worth buying at a fair price and good for some bone chilling fun.
What's great about it: Scary and well done
What's not so great: Departs from the original 'true' story
