Surprisingly Good

Had this movie been done 10 years ago, when he was in the Gone in 60 Seconds age, then perfect. unfortunately he looks aged, while his hairpiece doesn't. Sorry, but he didn't seem believable in the role. I generally like Nick Cage, Face/Off is a great choice, but this film didn't seem to mesh with him. Overall, the movie itself wasn't a pleasant surprise, though i didn't think it was anywhere near the best comic book movies. It is entertaining and worth watching though. A good fun movie is always a good thing. Buy or rent depending on the price.
What's great about it: Pretty good movie
What's not so great: Not a great movie, Nick Cage is the wrong choice

A New Classic For Sci Fi
on August 6, 2008

The show the film is based on was unfortunately cancelled after not being given a real chance. The shows were aired as they were produced rather than in order, the production schedule demanded for the show left Joss Whedon little time to create elaborate environments, which only appear in a handful of the only season made. The show was often preempted for sporting events and left with no real conclusion when it was cancelled. This film stands on its own right and is fairly easy to follow, however, you get a much different perspective if you watch the show as well. The film is well done and is an awesome sci fi film. The production and adventure is on a much grander scale so it doesn't disappoint. Some sci fi movies based on a show end up being just long episodes, with some reruns of a tv show with greater worth than the film. This movie allows for an incredible conclusion to the story, or if you see this first, an incredible start. That's how i got into it. I saw the film, i got hooked, and i bought the series, also available here. Check it out, its a good buy.
What's great about it: Awesome film
What's not so great: Wish the show was still on

Roland Emmerich's science fiction blockbuster Independence Day comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has also been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a smattering of commentary from Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, as well as commentary from the special effects crew. This is a solid disc from 20th Century Fox that should be appreciated by fans of the film.

New Classic

Ok, the cons, no big deal, but in the movie the government knows about aliens, but somehow the US government is the only one that does, and even then the information isn't shared until after devastation has occurred. The head of the CIA knew, but the president didn't, yet his cabinet knew, makes little sense, but hardly affects the movie in a negative light, and i don't really consider that a negative of the film. As for the pros, great movie, fun aciton, amazing special effects for the time period. Something that is subtle, in one scene you see Israeli and Palestinian aircraft on the same runway in a joint effort. As well, the president declares Independence Day relevant to the world. The spirit of patriotism and hope is clearly present by the end, and makes for an awesome hero action archetype film. If you don't have this movie, you don't have a dvd collection. Oh, i did find one thing i objected to, the one random stripper scene by Vivica A. Fox, considering the family tone, and the language throughout the movie, this scene was out of place and thrown in just for shock factor. It didn't mesh well or belong, and the stripper role could have easily been any other situation or job instead with an even better effect on the film. The scene seemed as though it was thrown in later for the sake of having a woman dancing around.
What's great about it: Awesome Movie
What's not so great: Some nitpicker details don't make sense

Comedy that's not funny
on August 4, 2008

Fist, all the funny stuff happend in the previews, so watch that and you'll get the crux of the film. Second, the ending was horrible and made me uspet that i paid to see this in the theater, there was nothing else out at the time worth watching, i should have rented a movie instead. Third, the funny stuff lasts into the fist half hour, then the movie got real, as in it seemed like i was watching my friends argue. You could look around the theater and see the air seemed to have left the room, suddenly the comedy wasn't so funny. You're left in that acward feeling after say watching your parents argue and storm off from each other, or see your best friends on the verge of breaking up. Sorry, but that is the exact opposite of entertaining. The movie goes downhill from there with the speed of an asteroid hitting the moon. You want Vince Vaughn, watch wedding crashers, dodgeball, anchorman, and others. This one isn't worth paying for, wait for tv if you want to see it. A movie that takes a similar idea but actually pulled it off, License to Wed. That was funny, and seemed real yet light hearted and had the feel of something someone would enjoy. Not so much a romatic comedy as a comedy romance, i think.
What's great about it: A few Trademark Vince Vaughn moments
What's not so great: preivews have all the comedic scenes, movie got too real

I didn't know about this one until i caught it on tv. Wow, i wish i had gone to see it on the big screen. Incredible plot, and essentially the perfect bank robbery, kinda. This movie is well done and a surprise hit. Check this one out, if you like the 'cop vs bad guy' movies, check this one out.
What's great about it: Surprise Hit
What's not so great: Wish i had seen it sooner

MGM brings Mel Brooks' science fiction farce Spaceballs to DVD with both widescreen and standard versions on the same disc, and 5.1 Surround Sound, though the movie's lackluster production values make it difficult to discern the quality of the transfer. Still, for fans of actor/writer/director Brooks, the full-length commentary (originally recorded for the laserdisc release) includes his trademark quips and a genuine appreciation of the actors and other collaborators on the film. He has an amazing memory for the details of their careers before and after working with him. It's also refreshing for a director to mock his own work, as well as laugh at the comic bits he has undoubtedly seen dozens of times. In a brief behind-the-scenes featurette, cast members John Candy, Rick Moranis, and others talk about the pleasure of working with Brooks and share stories of on-set goofiness. Basically, for fans of Brooks' unique comic sensibilities, the DVD makes a worthwhile evening's entertainment.

One of the Best Of The Best

Back when a movie parody didn't have a generic title like Date Movie, or Super Hero movie, which if anything are a bad joke of parodies themselves. This movie, though poking fun at sci fi, Star Wars in particular, never portrays itself as smarter than the audience and if anything gives it all a great homage, as opposed to insulting like other films that really only discredit the genres. I grew up with this movie and in fact saw it before the actual Star Wars. This is an absolute must have of must have movies. Your dvd collection is incomplete without this hilarious masterpiece. Trademark Mel Brooks moments and references throughout. The comedy will keep you in stitches and rolling on the floor. No, i'm not abbreviating that.
What's great about it: Hilarious
What's not so great: Wish Mel brooks made more of these parodies

Bill Paxton makes his directorial debut with Frailty, an intense gothic horror movie. The DVD package allows Paxton to share his experience and approach in making this twisted thriller. Presented in anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 with Dolby Digital 5.1, the movie's moody feel and wide use of sinister sound is perfectly captured. Both English and Spanish subtitles are available. Special features include a trailer, still photo gallery, and storyboards for Magic Weapons, The Angel and The Sheriff. A Lions Gate promo for USA's TV series, The Dead Zone and the movie Liberty Stands Still is secreted between the thumb and forefinger of the God's Hand on the main menu page. Three "Commentaries" give varying perspectives on the film. Paxton gives a witty, informative and entertaining dialogue on the director's commentary. Arnold Glassman, David Kirschner and Brian Tyler give a production commentary and Brent Hanley narrates from the writer's point of view. Four "Deleted Scenes" give additional insight into the film's character's and carefully detailed plot. Two behind-the-scenes featurettes round out the disc. "The Making of Frailty" shows Paxton at work and demonstrates his many influences, including that of Alfred Hitchcock. The Sundance Channel's "Anatomy of a Scene" takes an inside look at the car scene that was filmed with Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe. In total, this DVD release is anything but frail.

Movie Done Right

Talk about a good movie. Bill Paxton has always been a good actor and this movie will really show you why. Pay attention to detail in this movie, this is one of those 'you have to see it again to catch the details you missed.' The ending leaves you wondering what has actually happened throughout the course of the movie. Not your run of the mill shasher movie with characters you have zero interest in other than looks, hence why i hate the Jason Vorhees movies. This movie will leave you hooked and is great to watch with friends. Well worth the buy.
Spoiler Alert, this may give away a plot point but is something to watch for. At one point when Fenton is giving his story to the FBI agent, the story flashbacks to a family dinner, to which his little brother states his affection for peas and cleans his plate of them. Then consider how many kids hate peas, and then consider who is telling the story. When you get to the end, think about this scene and it will make sense. It reminds me of The Sixth Sense in terms of the Big Twist.
What's great about it: Incredible writing and acting, a movie well done.
What's not so great: not your everyday slasher story

I bought two of the sets not knowing there was a bigger box set of the fan collections. This is an excellent buy. If you're a trek fan or just starting as one, this will essentially acquaint anyone with the crux of the show, with some of the most exciting and most dramatic episodes. Great for a collection and an awesome gift.
What's great about it: Awesome collection

Excellent Choice for any Trek Fan
on July 29, 2008

With the Original series it's hard not to have an episode centered around the captain, Kirk was the main character and almost every episode revolved around him. There are many notable episodes about Picard as well, particularly some of the adventures he shared with Data. The same goes for the remaining captains, there were many which gave notable characterization and more in depth development. This collection essentially scratches a big surface, but is still a worthy buy. I also recommend the other fan compilations, The Q collection, The Borg collection (excellent choice, robo zombies of the future), as well as Time Travel, and Alternate Realities (In the mirror universe, a goatee makes one evil, a gag mentioned even in south park). This is a worthy dvd to buy, for any sci fi collection, and an excellent gift for a trek fan.
What's great about it: Some of the best captain's episodes
What's not so great: A shame more couldn't be added

Wackiness ensues in the super comedy Super Troopers. Fox's work on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is excellent save for a small amount of edge enhancement in the image. Overall, the colors, fleshtones, and black levels are all very solid and clear. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in Spanish. While the film doesn't utilize a vast array of directional effects (except in a few key scenes), the bulk of this 5.1 mix if free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. The extra features on Super Troopers are bountiful, starting with two commentary tracks: the first by director/actor Jay Chandrasekhar and actor Erik Stolhanske and a second by actors Kevin Heffernan, Paul Soter, and Steve Lemme. Both commentaries are filled with many humorous stories, anecdotes, and thoughts about the film's production and history. A series of outtakes and deleted scenes are broken up unto four different sections and should please fans looking for more gags and jokes in the vein of the film. Finally, there is a very fluffy making-of featurette, a "Road Trip Newswrap" that follows the comedy troupe on the road, and theatrical trailers for the film.

Hilarious Funny Comedic Film

One of the funniest movies in a long time. Warning, this film though full of laugh out loud comedy is guranteed to offend somone. Not a family film, probably a guy movie by definition. Great to watch with buddies. The groups following movies, Club Dread, Dukes of Hazzard, a bit less impressive. Beer Fest was fun and reminded me of this one. Super Troopers is definitely the one to have. Rumor has it that the guys got the ideas for the 'games' in the movie from real encounters with cops. I don't know, but i wouldn't doubt it.
What's great about it: One of the funniest and most quotable movies
What's not so great: best to watch in a group, somewhat low replay value solo
