Just What My Back Needed!
on January 3, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
This is a surprisingly simple yet effective way to help with tight back muscles. First, this is built very nicely. The suction cup is large and rather strong. You might need to play around with where to place it. It really does require a perfectly flat surface. I tried it on a couple of painted surfaces thinking they would be smooth enough but it eventually fell off. Ended up sticking it to the side of the refrigerator and it's held strong. The ball itself is just the right size. I'm able to easily get right into my shoulder blade area which is where I tend to have issues with tightness. But I can also easily reach the rest of my back and shoulders and it feels great! I do wish the ball rolled a bit more smoothly. But then again, that might take away from the tension that it has and not work as well. The fact that it is easy to remove and take along with me means it will be coming on vacation with us as well :-) I can't help but thing hitting a sauna and/or hot tub and then running this all around my back would help my back feel like a million bucks!

The perfect drone for most
on December 23, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
The DJI Mini 3 is the perfect drone for most people. It's not perfect, but it also doesn't cost a fortune. I won't go deep into technical specs as you can read the spec section for that. But I will say that this Fly More combo really does provide you with everything you need. Drone, three batteries, case, and several extra sets of propellers. The case holds it all at seems well made. The battery life is very good as far as drone batteries go lasting 30+ minutes (an optional extended life battery can be purchased that gives you closer to 45 minutes but I don't feel the need for it). The drone itself feels well made while being insanely light weight. I also have the original Mini from a few years ago. I was amazed by how light that one was. The fact that even more tech could be added to this one and still keep it under 249g is incredible. This is important because keeping it under 250g means you don't have to register it (but you do still need your TRUST certification. Very easy to complete). The Mini 3 is a vast improvement over the original Mini. The camera sensor is bigger providing better sharpness & less digital noise (although it is still 12 megapixels). The battery life is better. And most importantly, it now connects to the controller using Ocusync 2 for a much better connection and longer range. For me, the best part of the Fly More kit is the included DJI RC controller with the built in screen. Keep in mind that if you purchase the basic Mini 3 kit you will only get the standard controller that you need to connect to your phone. This is a much bigger deal than you might think. Honestly, there were many times I didn't bother flying my original mini because it was a bit of a pain to connect the phone to the controller. But here, with this all in one controller that doesn't need the phone, it makes getting airborne so much faster. And the screen is large & easy to see even in daylight. I can't stress enough how big of a deal this is. Now for a few hundred more you can get the Mini 3 Pro. So what's the difference? Well, aside from some software changes, the main differences are that the Pro includes avoidance sensors and 48 megapixel still images compared to the 12 megapixels of the Mini 3 (the actual physical sensor size is the same though). Now how important these things are is for you to decide, but for most I suspect you don't need the Pro. Avoidance sensors are nice, but seeing as you should always have there drone in sight it shouldn't be an issue (never has been for me). As for the difference in megapixels this is not as big of a difference as you might think. And in certain situations the extra megapixels can be a down side. Adding that many more megapixels can be great but in low light it will actually increase noise. Plus, depending on what you plan to do with the footage you capture, 12 megapixels is all you need. For social media and content creation you would be hard pressed to need more. I should mention that with the Mini 3 you have the option to shoot JPEG & RAW for your stills. This is a big plus over the original Mini that only provided JPEG. Being able to shoot RAW and extract more detail and more latitude for editing in general is a big plus. With the Mini 3 you really don't have the ability to do much in the way of color grading with the video footage. This is saved for the higher end models. But again, most do not need this. Since getting the Mini 3 the weather in northern Minnesota hasn't been the best. However, even flying in wind that I never would have considered taking the original Mini out in the footage has been steady and I have had no issues controlling the drone. I've also had no signal losses. This is mostly due to the Ocusync system that is a vast improvement over the older wi-fi connection. So in my opinion, unless you have a specific reason for needing more megapixels, the option for color grading or the avoidance sensors I really can't imagine this not being a great drone for most. And if you are a content creator for social media, the small size and ease of use with the all in one controller will allow you the freedom to keep the drone with you and the speed in getting airborne to capture more of the footage you want. The Mini 3 will be with me a lot and will be a big benefit for my photography.

Just what I needed
on December 21, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
I've tried several USB-C hubs with my MacBook Air M1, but for the most part they just didn't cut it for one reason or another. But the Hyper DUO Pro 7 works perfectly for me. First off, it looks like an original Apple product so it blends right it. Between the fact that it connects to both USB-C ports and also because of the included plate to hold it in place, it fits snug and doesn't feel flimsy. The biggest issue I have had with other hubs is either lacking certain ports, or the ports not being powerful enough. Because this connects to both USB-C ports on the laptop, it enables it to function more efficiently. For example, the USB-C on the hub allows for 40Gps speeds and the HDMI can handle a full 4K at 60Hz. if you look closely at the specs on many other hubs, those numbers are usually half of that. For me personally, I really like having the Ethernet port. Whenever I can, I prefer this over wi-fi. Unfortunately, having this port built into the computer seems to have become a thing of the past. This solves the problem. For me the only negative is that the card slot is Micro SD instead of full size SD. As a photographer, full size is needed as that is what many cameras use. Things such as drones and such usually use Micro SD. But if it were full size SD instead you could at least use the adapter with the Micro SD card that they usually come with and make everyone happy. But honestly, that's my only complaint.

Eufy is the way to go
on October 30, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
I've tried a numerous home security cameras. Most work okay but fall short in one way or another. This is my second eufy system and it works great, just like the first one. This is a truly all in one no subscription system. The base unit can accept a 2.5 inch hard drive (not included but they are cheap enough) for video storage. I had a 2TB drive not doing anything so I reformatted it and dropped it in. Works great. The base unit is small and sits right by my router. It is hard wired to the router, but it's all wi-fi from there on. The cameras themselves are well made. they are a little bigger than I expected but that's not an issue. I suspect the size & weight is due to the internal batteries. For me, there are two big selling points. First is the fact that the cameras can use solar power. No need to take them down to recharge them or run power out to them. Being that we are in cold Minnesota, time will tell how well the battery power holds up in the winter. But I have them placed where they will get plenty of sun light so we should be good. The second important feature is of course the 4K resolution. The video quality is outstanding compared to any security system I have ever used. Day or night, it is easy to see and clear. Seeing as a good signal is needed for a good 4K stream, I'm not so sure you would want to place the cameras too far away. But I think for most home uses placement shouldn't be an issue. Really can't say anything bad. This is a well made system that works great right out of the box and could not be easier to setup.

Best soundbar I’ve used
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
I’ve had a number of soundbars over the years and this is my favorite one so far. In terms of looks and build quality, it’s really nothing different from most other soundbars. Let’s face it, they all pretty much look the same. And that’s fine. I want to hear it, not stare at it :-) An HDMI and an optical audio cable are included. And I think this is the first soundbar I’ve used that doesn’t use a big power brick. Just one simple power cord for the soundbar and one for the subwoofer. One thing I was surprised by is that the soundbar is longer than any I’ve had before. Certainly not a problem, but something to keep in mind if space is tight. I have to say this was the easiest soundbar to hook up. The soundbar and subwoofer connect by Bluetooth. The pairing process was easy and it’s been stable. And to my surprise, the tv recognized the soundbar thru the HDMI arc connection instantly without me needing to go into any settings menus. And better yet, my cable tv remote didn’t need programming! I can’t begin to tell you how nice that is. Now, as for the important part, the sound. Simply perfect. The bass is nice (and of course, adjustable) without being overbearing. But more important to me is the vocals. The dialogue enhancement control works awesome. I can finally get the perfect balance of vocals and bass. In the past, that hasn’t always been easy to accomplish with other soundbars. Clarity is great. This Denon doesn’t leave me with the feeling that the tv & soundbar are separate devices if that makes sense. The sound doesn’t feel like it’s coming from somewhere else. All in all, zero complaints!

So easy to use!
on October 14, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
Absolutely love the GoPro 11 Creator. This is my first GoPro since the GoPro 4. And have things changed. I honestly never got along with the 4. Finicky and not easy to navigate. That has all changed. The 11 is very responsive and the menus are easy to navigate and to understand. On it’s own, the 11 is a video powerhouse. But with the Volta grip attached it makes using it so simple. The controls being right at your fingers makes such a difference. Obviously you won’t use the grip for many commonly used outdoor activities. But for vlogging it’s a very valuable tool. The included light is nice to have in a pinch, but really it’s not powerful enough to use for much. The ability to connect directly to you favorite social media for streaming is awesome. And the choices of resolution will cover most needs. I suspect most will want to use it in 5k mode. The 5k footage looks awesome. In comparison to the 4k, it looks a bit better. But keep in mind not all frame rates are available in all modes. The HyperSmooth 5.0 stabilization works very well. Impressively well in fact. As does the orientation level. I’ve only played with the voice controls but they seem to work fine. Guess I’m just old school and can’t get into the voice control thing. Battery life is good but not outstanding. Definitely worth investing in a spare. I wasn’t sure what size memory card to go with but I settled on a 256gb. Should be plenty. With recording set to 5k & 60fps it says it can record over 7 hours. And as always, it feels rugged. I haven’t tested the 33 foot depth claim for being waterproof. But I certainly will never need to worry about taking it out in a storm (something I’m likely to do). I only have one complaint and it’s really not a big deal. When attached to the Volta, you can use it without the USB-C cord connecting the 11 to the grip thru Bluetooth. But you can also connect the cord to the 11 to allow charging both units with the Volta port. The problem is that when the cord is connected to the 11, it feels (and even looks like) the tension on the 11 port is strained. Now it may just be that it looks bad. But in the long term it might be a problem point. Beyond that, I am thrilled with the GoPro 11 Creator Edition and plan to use it a lot.

Very handy
on October 14, 2022

The new Ninja Power Mix is a very versatile & handy device. It comes complete with the accessories to help you mix and blend whatever you want. Although it looks small, it’s very powerful. It has a 750-peak watt unit. It uses what they are calling “SmartTorgue” to keep the blending speeds consistent. Seems to do that very well. The build quality is top notch. It’s rather heavy for its size and that’s a good thing. The adaptability is great. It’s easy as can be to use for mixing a smoothie. But adaptable enough to use for big jobs as well. Clean up is easy with the attachments dishwasher safe. To be honest, before this I was reluctant to use a blender simply because I didn’t want to dig it out and fumble with cleaning it. This is so simple to grab quickly and clean up easily. Part of me wishes this was cordless. But, not needing to worry about the charge not lasting is a big plus as well. Besides, with the 750-peak watt motor I doubt a cordless design would last very long on a charge. Really have no complaints and I expect this will last a long time.

Love it!

The Sony INZONE M9 is an amazing monitor. Easily the best I have ever owned. It has everything a gamer could ask for and then some.
To begin, the design is really cool. As you probably already know, it was clearly designed to fit along side with the Sony PlayStation 5. And the two sync together to give you a flawless gaming experience by allowing the two to "talk" to each other to select the perfect settings. Personally, I really like the design and I like the stand as well. It's true the the screen can only be raised & lowered and tilted front to back. Not horizontally. Not an issue for me, but something you should know before purchasing. I like the placement of the power button & the control joystick on the back. Easy to get to and responsive. It is a bit thicker than most modern monitors. I can only assume that is to facilitate the Full Array Local Dimming. Also, there is a nice looking accent light on the back that you can change the color of (or turn off) that looks nice. That is if you are into looking at the back of your monitor :-) Honestly, unless you are in a pitch black room you will probably forget the light is even there.
Now lets get into what is most important: Performance. I have used it with both a DisplayPort 1.4 cable that allows for 144Hz, and also an HDMI 2.1 cable that allows for up to 120Hz. Honestly, these refresh rate are so close you would really be hard-pressed to notice any difference between the two so run with whatever of the two cables you have. Both look amazing with no tearing. Also, keep in mind that you do get Nvidia G-SYNC capabilities when used with a PC. It wasn't long ago when I thought that getting such a smooth gaming experience with a 4K monitor would be impossible. But do keep in mind that if you use an older HDMI cable (non 2.1) you will only get a 60Hz refresh rate. What I can say is that the picture is razor sharp with vibrant colors. This is true with both gaming and other uses. I've even used it for photo editing and it looks fantastic with accurate colors. Also, you have a ton of customization available either thru the screens built in controls, or the optional download control panel for your computer. I highly suggest downloading this. It makes using the controls much, much easier.
So, far I haven't run into a game that doesn't look & perform flawlessly with the M9. So are there any downsides? Well, there are no included cables so that will be an added expense unless you already have some. Switching from one input to another has a little lag but nothing objectionable. These are really more of an annoyance that a drawback. The only real downside is the built in speakers. They are awful! I mean, as in tin can sounding awful. Now admittedly, most gamers are going to be using either a soundbar, external speakers or even more likely headphones. So I'm sure the speakers were an afterthought. However, this is not a cheap monitor and this is Sony, who makes some of the best audio gear in the world. So it's a bit of a surprise that they allowed this to come with such poor speakers. I'm not going to knock any points off for this because good or bad, I was never really going to use the built in speakers when I have good headphones and a great soundbar. But just keep the speakers in mind if you plan to use them.
Do I recommend the M9. Absolutely. Provided you are a gamer or have some other reason for the high end specs. But if you are not a gamer and say just a web surfer, it would be overkill for you. But if the specs are what you need I highly recommend it.

Impressed!
on September 2, 2022

I wasn't sure before using the Hyperice Normatec Go how well they would really work. After a week of use, I'm impressed. They feel very well made. I don't get the feeling they will fall apart anytime soon. Battery life is great. The battery/control pack on each one also feel well made and are easy to read and understand. I like the fact that once you turn each one on individually, you can control both from just one unit. No worries about the velcro-like material coming loose while wearing them. They hold incredibly tight. In use, it might take a few tries to find just the right amount of tightness that you need to put them on with. They basically go on much like a blood pressure cuff. I suggest a little bit of experimenting with the pressure settings. They go from 1-7. I've found 5 to be a good number. 7 is pretty intense, but it could be what you need. They pressurize in a pattern. It doesn't just keep inflating & deflating. A lot of thought seems to have gone into how to best massage your leg. We've used them after work outs, long days at work & long walks. I can honestly feel the difference! I can see where these would help for people with leg circulation issues as well. This is one of those things you might not think you need, but you will wonder how you lived without them. Highly recommended!

Fast & handles many devices
on August 27, 2022
Posted by: Duluthian
If it's been a few years since you updated to a new router, this might be the one to make you do just that. First, this is a typical Netgear in the fact that it is easy to get it up and running. I've always found Netgear apps easy to install and use. The design is pretty neat. It definitely looks like something out of a science fiction movie :-) It is a large router, but the "wings" do fold to help in placement. You have a USB-C port that can be used to ad a hard drive for network storage and it works fine. You have 6 LAN ports but if you are like me, you get a router like this for the wi-fi, not so much for the wired ports. As for the wi-fi, you couldn't ask for more: 2.4GHz, 5GHz & the newer 6GHz frequencies. The stated range of 2500 square feet seems about right. The 5 & 6GHz definitely slow a bit as you get farther away as you would expect. However, they are still strong and faster than previous routers. Keep in mind you get two 2.4GHz streams, four 5GHz streams and two 6GHz streams. All of this together gives you the ability to have a tremendous number of devices connected without any slowdown. Right now, between phones, tablets, computers and home devices we have 20 devices on the wi-fi. No hint of slowing down. The big selling point for me is it works great for wi-fi gaming with my Alienware laptop. You really don't have to give a second thought to what is connected. For best results of course, spread your devices over all three frequencies. You are set for the near future with 6E. Not a lot of devices can take advantage of this as of yet, but more & more are coming. If you are looking for a top of the line router that can run every device you can think of, while still gaming without any slowdowns, this is the one to buy.

Simple & Powerful!
By Duluthian from Duluth, MN
I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of the claims made in regards to the Linksys Velop Wi-Fi system. Lets face it, we have all heard the claims of more powerful Wi-Fi regarding the latest and greatest routers before, right? Well let me tell you that this time around it is no joke! Not only is this system amazingly simple to hook up, but it works as advertised!
To begin, the three tower kit is elegantly packaged it a very nice box. Aside from the three devices you won't find much else in the box but that is kind of the point of this system. Simplicity. You get the towers (smaller than I expected them to be), one Ethernet cord and three power units. As for instructions, there are very few and that is just fine. You get a simple guide telling you to download the Linksys App from there website, Google Play Store or iTunes. Trust me, that's all you need.
Set up once you have the app downloaded couldn't be more simple. Easy to understand instructions will guide you thru setting up the main unit (any one of the three will work. They are all identical). It only takes a few minutes but that may take a bit longer depending on your internet connection. As soon as you have the first unit set up it will then ask you if you want to hook up another unit and so on and so on until you are done. If you need more than the initial three, individual units or a two pack can be purchased and added to the system. It really is the easiest router system I have ever set up.
As for the app, it allows for a good amount of control over the Velop. Tech junkies who demand only the greatest of control over their internet settings might find it a bit too simple for them. However, for the vast majority of users you will find all the control you need. Parental settings, guest network settings and so on are all here. And with the app on your phone or tablet, you can control the system even when you are away.
Each unit has two Ethernet ports. The main unit will need one of them to connect to your internet modem. After that, they are all free to be used as you like (if you choose to be wired up at all). I have the main unit right by my Mac Mini so I have that hard wired in. Everything else in the house (a couple of laptops & tablets, phones and a couple of Echo Dots) are all using the Wi-Fi.
Ok, so how well does it work? Simply put, very very well. I had a very good router set up before this (also a Linksys). The big downfall to most routers is that even if it is very powerful you tend to lose some speed with distance. Power with most routers will give you distance but not always speed. Having run a series of speed tests, I am getting every ounce of internet speed that I am paying for in every corner of the house with the Velop. Literally, no drop off in speed even from the most distant of the three towers and that one is two floors down! Before, I had full speeds in the room with the router and although I had full house coverage, the speeds were down to less than half on the extreme fringes of the range. Now you can always hook up range extenders with most routers but that only extends your range, not your speed. With the way the Velop system works not only does it increase your reach, it maintains your speeds as well. Please don't confuse this with it making your Wi-Fi faster. No router can make the speeds coming into your home faster than what you are paying for. But this system keeps the Wi-Fi speeds consistent all thru the home and that is a major advantage over a traditional router with range extenders. Ever tried watching a tv show or movie on your tablet only to walk into another room and suddenly start having buffering issues because the speeds don't hold up? Well the Velop system goes a long ways towards fixing that. The Velop is really in my eyes the perfect router system. It gives you what most of us have been chasing after in a router for a long time. Consistent speed and signal strength. If you were to buy a good traditional router and several range extenders for your home it would cost around the same as the Velop. But the Velop works far better and is insanely easy to set up. It really is the perfect Wi-Fi system!

Still loving the Velop system after a couple of weeks of use. Solid performance. I did run into one issue that really isn't the Velop's problem but felt it might be helpful to share.
I use a Wemo switch to control a table lamp by way of the Echo Dot ( "Alexa, lights on/off"). It worked great before I hooked up the Velop but it took me some time to figure out why it wouldn't work with the Velop. The Wemo requires a 2.4ghz channel. The Velop uses 2.4ghz and 5ghz but they are not controllable. Therefore, the Wemo would not recognize the Velop's signal. My work around was actually simple and gave me a use for my old router. I simple plugged the old router into one of the Velop's ethernet ports and had the old router send out the dedicated 2.4ghz channel. Now I simple have the Wemo & Echo Dot hooked to that signal. Works like a charm. I would imaging this could be an issue for any other (mostly older) devices that only work on the 2.4ghz channel as well.
As I said before, this really isn't an issue of the Velop. It is really more an issue of the Wemo not being up to date with the current 5ghz channel. However, it is still something to keep in mind.
