Best dash cam I have used
on November 5, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
I've had several dash cams over the years. Most were good, but all left something to be desired. Enter the Nextbase iQ 4K. This is really a step forward in dash cams. The device is very well made and doesn't feel like a cheap plastic toy like all the others I have had. Set up is very easy with the app guiding the way. In terms of what you need to do, it is really just a matter of mounting it and running the cable to your OBD II port. Everything else is done on your phone. The forward facing 4K camera gives a very clear image that even looks good at night (an area most dash cams struggle with). The cab camera, although a lower resolution, also gives an excellent image. An optional rear window camera is available, but I don't have one yet. A note regarding running the power. The optimal way to connect the camera is with the OBD II port. However, a very well thought out optional fuse box connection is also provided. In my case, I purchased an OBD II splitter so I can keep an open port for use with a code reader and it works perfectly. The app is where everything comes together. There are two subscription plans depending on the features you require. I personally think you get a lot for your money with these subscriptions. Real time alerts if something happens while you are away from your car, ability to communicate (and watch) what is going on if you let someone else is using the car, automatic 911 service and even the ability to activate a witness mode in the event of such things as a road rage episode (you can have it send the recording to a contact of your choosing). And it can do so much more. Keep in mind that you can use this unit without a subscription, but it is very limited as most of the features require the 4G signal that the subscription plan provides. So really, it is much more than a dash cam. It's more like an automated camera/security/safety system. I have no complaints whatsoever with the Nextbase iQ 4K and really think it is something everyone should have.

Happy run down memory lane
on November 5, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
Hadn't really given any thought to getting a record player until some friends recently gave us a large record collection before they moved. Now, I am loving the return to my youth :-) This Victrola turntable is very easy to use and a great way to revive your old record collection. The design and build is very nice and it feels like it will work for many years. Overall, it is very simple to use with only a small handful of controls (even changing the needle cartridge is easy). You can hook it to a stereo as in days past. However, you can also run it thru your favorite Bluetooth device such as a speaker or headphones (I suspect in this day & age this is how most will use it). It only took a few minutes from unboxing to have it connected and running. Instantly, everything I remembered about using records came back to me. Yes, the occasional skipping and crackling is still there :-) But so is the delightful tones only a record (not something streamed) can provide. The sound doesn't give the modern "perfection" of the digital age. But that's also much of the draw to using a turntable. Still, the sound quality is really outstanding compared to what I recall from the old record days. Must admit I am not a big fan of the cover for it. Instead of a domed cover than can be left on while the turntable is in use, it is more of a form fitted solid plastic that can not be left on when in use. But really, it is just a minor issue. Records have been making a bit of a comeback. If you feel like getting a record player but do not want to spend a fortune while still getting great quality, this is the turntable for you.

Incredibly small!
on October 27, 2023

The Crucial X9 2TB is an excellent portable ssd. Fast and very portable. The pictures of it don’t give you a real idea of just how small and lightweight this drive is. Easy to pop into a pocket and forget you even have it on you. Yet it still feels solid and durable. 2TB is a lot of memory for portable purposes. Can’t imagine needing more. Speed is what most will be concerned with and it’s plenty fast. I don’t doubt there are faster portable drives, but you will definitely pay dearly for them. The photos I’m attaching show it tested on two different computers. The slower speeds are from my desktop using a USB-C 3.1 slot. Fast for sure, but it gets faster. The faster numbers are from my laptop with Thunderbolt 4. Basically double the speed. Transferring large files of jpegs has been fast and smooth. I’m trying hard to find any negatives about this drive but I really can’t think of any. Maybe it would be nice to have an indicator light to show it’s running but honestly that’s nitpicking. Overall a top of the line portable drive.

The "AIR" in the name says it all
on October 27, 2023

As you would expect with any Corsair product, this is an excellent wireless mouse. Feels great in your hand and is insanely lightweight. Can't stress the lightweight part enough. Even though it has a long and narrow design that is a bit larger than I would expect for a lightweight mouse, this thing is so light you will notice the difference in use compared to most others. Operationally it is very simple. In most respects a standard mouse layout with no surprises with the buttons. Clicks feel nice and positive and the wheel is very smooth. It is very quiet. DPI adjustments are easy and very flexible. Being able to use it for very precise movements is very easy. What it is not is a gaming mouse. Don't get me wrong, you could use it for light gaming. But that's not what it's meant for. So far, I have found the battery life to be great and it charges very quickly. And of course you can use it as a wired mouse if you like. I did have a few hick-ups in getting the Bluetooth connection to take the first time, but I think that was user error on my part. The connection has been solid ever since. Overall I am very happy with the M75 Air and I expect it will last a long time.

Takes your coffee to a new level
on October 27, 2023

There is no shortage of coffee makers out there. But the Café Grind & Brew is for the coffee purist. This will make getting a better quick cup of coffee a breeze. It is well designed and made. It is also very stylish so it will look great in any kitchen. you can easily brew right to your travel mug for even more flexibility. All the standard functions that you would expect are here. Selections for mug size, carafe size, brew strength and timer are all here. The ability to more precisely set the temperature is great. But the star of the show is being able to go right from grind to brew. This is where you get the flexibility to create the perfect brew for your taste and it's easy to do. The grinding process is as simple as dumping in the beans and selecting your type if grind (finely ground and such). This to me is what makes the biggest difference in the coffee. You can use it like a normal coffee maker with your favorite coffee from the store, but really why would you? After a few goes at it you will find it just as easy to make coffee with freshly ground beans and you will never look back. Also, keep in mind that this can be wi-fi connected to help with starting the brew. Standard timer settings work for me, but it's nice to see it is as connected as most other home appliances these days.

Very nice!

Gaming keyboards are kind of a personal thing. What one person likes another might not. I've used many over the years. The Corsair K70 Core strikes the perfect balance for me. First of all, it's a Corsair. Corsair makes some of the best (if not the best) keyboards out there. It is solid without being heavy. It has a long and narrow design that I much prefer over the deep keyboards. The layout is perfect for me and I love the multi-function dial. I like the fact that it is a corded keyboard. Wireless is nice for a mouse, but corded is better for keyboards in my opinion. The keystrokes have a nice feel with the perfect depth & sensitivity. I don't find myself making nearly as many mistakes. The combination of these keystrokes and the narrow design make this great for both gaming and other applications. I don't need a second keyboard now for "other stuff". The adjustable backlighting looks great and is very customizable. If I have any complaint, it is with Corsairs ICue software for the lighting. It's not the most intuitive software to use. Once you figure it out, it's not to bad and you can do a lot with it. But I do think the software could be made a bit more user friendly. However, I can't really say any of the other keyboard makers have exactly perfected lighting software, either. All in all,I think you will be very happy with the K70 Core.

The 800 cfm – 12-amp Electric Turbine Blower is, quite simply, the most powerful electric blower in the marketplace. Other 800 cfm (Cubic Feet per Minute) blowers don’t put out wind power at 135 mph. Physics shouldn’t allow it, but our engineers found a workaround. And even though you’re going to want to blow at that speed all the time, you can use the variable speed control to dial it down. When you need even more power than the 800 cfm/135 mph can provide, there’s the Hyper-Stream nozzle that focuses all the airflow right where you need it. Believe it or not, all that power can be controlled with one hand. The whole unit is only 6.6 lbs., and that amazing Turbine tech creates a wind tunnel that is easy to point. The cord retainer keeps extension cords from pulling apart, even on snags. And you don’t need any tools to put it together. Time to go clear that lawn.

Prepare to be blown away! Literally!
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
This corded blower from WORX is insanely powerful. I've had battery and gas blowers in the past. They were good, but not this good. My recent gas powered blower (that quit earlier this year) from a major name didn't come close to matching the power of the WORX. And with it being electric, no gas or oil to mess with. Also, no cord to pull to get it going. It is pretty lightweight for what it is. Feels as durable as any other blower. Operation is as simple as it gets. One switch to turn it on and adjust the power. On full blast, it seriously feels like it wants to jump out of your hands. It's like a hurricane in your driveway. Now it is what it is so I can't say that it's quiet. But compared to a gas blower it is much quieter. The fact that it is corded is both a plus and a minus. On the minus side, you do need a nice long outdoor extension cord so it's not as convenient as a cordless or gas blower. But, the fact that it is corded allows for the incredible power. A battery blower can't match it and if it did the battery probably wouldn't last very long. If you are like most and need a blower for cleaning up your driveway and sidewalks, this will most likely be perfect for you. I would only consider something cordless if I needed to use it far from an outlet.

Everyone should have one!
on September 24, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
To begin, this is not my first Jackery. I have two other older ones. They are all awesome and I really believe everyone should have one. It’s the kind of thing you don’t realize you need until you need it. This new Explorer 300 Plus is a modest upgrade to earlier models. The display is much nicer and easier to read. Also, it provides more information. Once it’s fully charged, it seems to go forever. Much of the advertising points out its outdoor use for camping and such. And it is indeed very handy for that. But I think this is a great device to keep ready to go at home for power outages. Its handy for use in locations where you might need occasional power usage but don’t want to run and extension cable. With a household plug and usb (and usb-c) it’s uses at home are endless. This new version can now be connected to your phone by Bluetooth and Wi-fi with the Jackery app. I must admit, I was a bit puzzled as to why I would need to use this app. But, it is handy to be able to check the remaining charge and how much of a power draw your connected devices are pulling. Not to mention you can control the insanely bright built in light from the app as well. The 300 is small enough to take anywhere, and powerful enough for more than you realize. And keep in mind that Jackery is a great name in portable power. Highly recommended!

Best hairdryer
on August 26, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
The best way to test a good hairdryer is to place it in the hands of an expert, my girlfriend :-) I’ve been using it as well. But she has very, very long hair and has several hairdryers. First, I will say that it is very well made. Doesn’t feel cheap at all. But, it’s a Shark so you can expect quality. Three heat settings as well as no heat along with variable speeds gives you plenty of options to choose from. What surprised me the most was how small it is. Relatively compact compared to most hairdryers. Now I have shorter hair so for me drying my hair is a pretty quick thing to do. But she says this Shark has literally cut her hair drying time in half. More importantly, she says that it doesn’t damage her hair the way other dryers do. There are several attachments included. She uses the straightener all the time. With this attachment, you don’t even need to touch the hair. Just use a straight motion just off the hair. This helps in protecting from damaged hair. All in all, if you need a good hairdryer that is small, has plenty of settings and attachments AND just flat out works better than any other hairdryer then this is for you.

Absolutely Amazing
on August 22, 2023
Posted by: Duluthian
So impressed with the Acer Predator Helios 16 that I'm really not sure where to start. I guess I will start with the design & build quality. The design is simple, but with just a touch of gaming pizzazz. It has a tasteful design that would allow you to take it anywhere without it standing out. Externally, the only thing attention grabbing is the light bar on the rear of the machine above the USB-C, HDMI (2.1 I might ad) and the power port. It has kind of a space age look when its lit up. But of course, you can shut the light off and doing so makes this look like most other square slab laptops. And for me, this is a good thing. I won't go into details about the various ports as they are listed in the specs. But I will say you won't be left longing for ports. Everything you need is here. Build quality is very nice. It is a high quality plastic design (just like 99% of all laptops) but everything is very sturdy with no creaking or flexing. The screen is very stable and doesn't bounce around like so many laptops do. The track pad & keys are a joy to use. I really like the feel of the keyboard. Just enough travel in the keys. And of course, it has per key RGB lighting so you can light it up your own way. The lighting is very good on the keys. Adjustable and bright. The speakers are very nice, but like with most laptops you will probably want to use either headphones or an external speaker setup for the best sound. As for the screen, I will simple say it is outstanding. Bright with up to 500 nits, WQXGA and 240Hz. Color accuracy is brilliant. Seriously, I have never seen a better screen outside of OLED displays. I haven't found the fan noise to be an issue at all. Yes it does get a bit loud when it really heats up with some intense gaming. But I can safely say it's not enough to be distracting and I have certainly had louder laptops. Battery life. Well, it is a powerful gaming laptop so don't get your hopes up to high with the battery. Specs say up to 5 hours when web browsing and I would say that is accurate. But when it comes to gaming, you can watch the battery lever go down real fast. I don't consider this a negative. The simple fact is, if you are gaming you should be plugged in with any gaming computer. If you are dreaming of the the days when you can play AAA games for many hours on end at high settings while on battery power, well, I hate to say it but those days just aren't here yet. The power brick is big and heavy. It would be nice if it was just a simple USB-C charging system like so many new laptops are. But considering what's under the hood, its understandable why such a chunky power supply is needed. 13th gen i9 with an RTX 4080 and 16gb of DDR5 RAM (not to forget the incredible screen) is all top of the line specs that will simply eat power. But all of this combines to make a desktop level experience you can take anywhere. The i9 combined with the RTX 4080 means there is no game currently available that you won't be able to play while maxing out the settings. Period. Where as most gaming machines make a few compromises somewhere in the specs, this machine does not. I've only had it a week, but every game I've thrown at it has been an absolute joy to play on this Acer. I haven't had to scale my settings back for any game. Like I said before, this is real top of the line desktop performance in your lap. I might ad that the RAM and M.2 can be swapped out and there is even a slot for a second M.2. One thing to note regarding RAM, the 16gb of DDR5 that it comes with should be more than enough for most users. But if you do decide to ad more, the max amount is 32gb of RAM total between the two slots. Overall I have nothing but the highest praise for the Acer Predator Helios 16 and I would recommend it to any gamer out there who wants a top end laptop that will still be high end a few years down the line.

Simple & Powerful!
By Duluthian from Duluth, MN
I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of the claims made in regards to the Linksys Velop Wi-Fi system. Lets face it, we have all heard the claims of more powerful Wi-Fi regarding the latest and greatest routers before, right? Well let me tell you that this time around it is no joke! Not only is this system amazingly simple to hook up, but it works as advertised!
To begin, the three tower kit is elegantly packaged it a very nice box. Aside from the three devices you won't find much else in the box but that is kind of the point of this system. Simplicity. You get the towers (smaller than I expected them to be), one Ethernet cord and three power units. As for instructions, there are very few and that is just fine. You get a simple guide telling you to download the Linksys App from there website, Google Play Store or iTunes. Trust me, that's all you need.
Set up once you have the app downloaded couldn't be more simple. Easy to understand instructions will guide you thru setting up the main unit (any one of the three will work. They are all identical). It only takes a few minutes but that may take a bit longer depending on your internet connection. As soon as you have the first unit set up it will then ask you if you want to hook up another unit and so on and so on until you are done. If you need more than the initial three, individual units or a two pack can be purchased and added to the system. It really is the easiest router system I have ever set up.
As for the app, it allows for a good amount of control over the Velop. Tech junkies who demand only the greatest of control over their internet settings might find it a bit too simple for them. However, for the vast majority of users you will find all the control you need. Parental settings, guest network settings and so on are all here. And with the app on your phone or tablet, you can control the system even when you are away.
Each unit has two Ethernet ports. The main unit will need one of them to connect to your internet modem. After that, they are all free to be used as you like (if you choose to be wired up at all). I have the main unit right by my Mac Mini so I have that hard wired in. Everything else in the house (a couple of laptops & tablets, phones and a couple of Echo Dots) are all using the Wi-Fi.
Ok, so how well does it work? Simply put, very very well. I had a very good router set up before this (also a Linksys). The big downfall to most routers is that even if it is very powerful you tend to lose some speed with distance. Power with most routers will give you distance but not always speed. Having run a series of speed tests, I am getting every ounce of internet speed that I am paying for in every corner of the house with the Velop. Literally, no drop off in speed even from the most distant of the three towers and that one is two floors down! Before, I had full speeds in the room with the router and although I had full house coverage, the speeds were down to less than half on the extreme fringes of the range. Now you can always hook up range extenders with most routers but that only extends your range, not your speed. With the way the Velop system works not only does it increase your reach, it maintains your speeds as well. Please don't confuse this with it making your Wi-Fi faster. No router can make the speeds coming into your home faster than what you are paying for. But this system keeps the Wi-Fi speeds consistent all thru the home and that is a major advantage over a traditional router with range extenders. Ever tried watching a tv show or movie on your tablet only to walk into another room and suddenly start having buffering issues because the speeds don't hold up? Well the Velop system goes a long ways towards fixing that. The Velop is really in my eyes the perfect router system. It gives you what most of us have been chasing after in a router for a long time. Consistent speed and signal strength. If you were to buy a good traditional router and several range extenders for your home it would cost around the same as the Velop. But the Velop works far better and is insanely easy to set up. It really is the perfect Wi-Fi system!

Still loving the Velop system after a couple of weeks of use. Solid performance. I did run into one issue that really isn't the Velop's problem but felt it might be helpful to share.
I use a Wemo switch to control a table lamp by way of the Echo Dot ( "Alexa, lights on/off"). It worked great before I hooked up the Velop but it took me some time to figure out why it wouldn't work with the Velop. The Wemo requires a 2.4ghz channel. The Velop uses 2.4ghz and 5ghz but they are not controllable. Therefore, the Wemo would not recognize the Velop's signal. My work around was actually simple and gave me a use for my old router. I simple plugged the old router into one of the Velop's ethernet ports and had the old router send out the dedicated 2.4ghz channel. Now I simple have the Wemo & Echo Dot hooked to that signal. Works like a charm. I would imaging this could be an issue for any other (mostly older) devices that only work on the 2.4ghz channel as well.
As I said before, this really isn't an issue of the Velop. It is really more an issue of the Wemo not being up to date with the current 5ghz channel. However, it is still something to keep in mind.
