4 of 5 stars for the Arnold action movie Commando. This movie is firmly set in the mid-1980's. Arnold is young and Alyssa Milano is a child. The story is simple and the action great. Ex-military Arnold learns that the members of his old troop are being killed. Eventually, they kidnap his daughter (Milano) trying to force Arnold into doing a task. Well, Arnold goes Commando to hunt down where they are holding her and to get her back. Armed with knives, guns, granades and a rocket launcher, he goes into their lair. An easy/basic plot, not much acting/characters to get in the way of the action. Just good old hand-to-hand Arnold. Oh, forgot, he had a few claymores along for the ride. A fun action movie.
What's great about it: Plenty of shooting, explosions and action
What's not so great: No DVD extras

Crazy Crows!

3 of 5 stars for the suspense movie The Messengers. A family moves from civilization to the middle-of-no-where into an obviously haunted house about two steps better than the Addams Family house. We have an unbalanced daughter and a baby brother who "sees things". The house is part of a Sunflower farm. We hire a farm hand to help our family. Strange things start to happen specially with the local crow population. I won't spoil the suspense elements of the movie. Of course, had it been me, I'd never have moved into the house in the first place. This is a well made suspense movie with really odd things happening. Good suspense music. Good plot and well acted. I do recommend this movie.
What's great about it: Suspenseful! Good plot, well acted. Crazy crows!

A complex plot expansively photographed

3 of 5 stars for the gritty drama movie Body of Lies. The lead role is played by Leonardo DiCaprio who does a great job playing a deep undercover CIA spy in the middle east. The plot is rather complex and I don't think I could summarize it easily. The focus is on middle east terrorism and a couple of groups making plans. The movie was expansively photographed with a rich selection of locations. Since the story jumps from country to country (Jordan, Turkey, USA, etc) they did a nice job of giving a look to each place. There are some action scenes which are good. Some brutal torture scenes and a fair amount of blood. The movie seemed long and its pace slow at times. All-in-all, I did enjoy it and do recommend it.
What's great about it: The complex plot, the photography, hard to guess what is next
What's not so great: Long movie and moves slowly at times

Exit Wounds arrives on DVD in a dual-layered widescreen anamorphic picture format (2.35:1 aspect ratio), and it comes with only the following audio tracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1 Stereo and French with optional English subtitles. Closed-captioning is also included. Special or bonus features are limited to a DMX rap music video for "Ain't No Sunshine", the usual behind-the-scenes documentary/featurette called "The Making of Exit Wounds," and theatrical trailers. Sound and picture quality are about average for a recent film transferred to DVD; both do justice to the many explosive sound effects and action scenes throughout the film, as well as to the fast-paced soundtrack.

Typical Steven Seagal action movie
on November 7, 2009

3 of 5 stars for the action movie Exit Wounds. This is a typical Steven Seagal movie with plenty of martial arts fights, car chases, gun fire and stunts. In this movie, Seagal plays a cop who gets assigned to a difficult inner-city precinct. This precinct has plenty of corrupt cops. Eventually Seagal discovers the "bad guys" are trying to document police corruption.
As I said, a pretty typical Seagal movie with direct fights where the bad guys get hurt badly. It is a good action movie and fun to watch. Perhaps not Seagal's best movie though.
What's great about it: Typical Seagal action, lots of gun fire, car chases

The military thriller Rules of Engagement comes to DVD with a sharp 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio. There is an English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, as well as English and French soundtracks in Dolby Digital Surround. There are English subtitles available on the disc. In addition to an audio commentary by Academy Award-winning director William Friedkin, this disc includes a behind-the-scenes featurette containing interviews with the cast and crew.

Military Drama with Jones and Jackson
on November 6, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the military drama movie Rules of Engagement. Let's start by saying any movie with Tommy Lee Jones ad Samuel L Jackson is one that I will like, both are among my favorite actors. Our two lead characters fought together during Viet Nam and experienced extreme action. Moving forward in time Jackson's character is still active in the Marines and is picked to do an embassy extraction in the middle east. His mission encounters heavy automatic weapon fire as they touch-down in the embassy compound. Extracting the Ambassador and his family, fire become heavier killing and wounding several Marines. Jackson eventually orders his troops to return fire killing over 80 people outside of the embassy. The key question was, were these people armed and firing upon the embassy? If so, they were combatants; if not they were civilians. The movie shifts to a legal and courtmarshall drama. Jackson asks his old friend Jones to be his attorney.
A very well made movie. Great action intensely photographed. Solid characters and real drama. This is a long movie but well worth the time to watch. I do recommend it!
What's great about it: Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L Jackson, great plot

The Darkest Batman movie yet
on November 1, 2009

5 of 5 stars for the comic book based Batman movie, The Dark Knight. By far, the darkest of the Batman movies and by far the longest of the movies. At 2hr 35min, frankly it is way too long and could be tightened-up. This movie focuses on the Joker and presents a sad, horrible and sick person rather than the odd funny joker of other Batman movies. This Joker is really evil.
The movie is richly made and grandly photographed with really great action scenes and special effects. I highly recommend this movie, just be prepared for a long experience. Oh, the Blu-Ray is packed with interesting behind the scenes materials.
What's great about it: Richly photographed, good plot, great action
What's not so great: It's very long and at times slow

The most complex of the Spidey movies
on October 31, 2009

from Sunnyvale, CA
4 of 5 stars for the comic book based movie Spider-Man 3. Of the three Spider-Man movies, this is the most complex with the deepest focus on the main characters. Tobey Maguire & Kristen Dunst return in the key roles. The overall plot is about a strange black creature arrives on the Earth and ultimately bonds with Peter Parker making a "black Spider-man". There are several sub-plots in the movie which add to the complexity of the story. There is Harry the son of the bad guy from Spider-Man 2 who first wants revenge for the death of his father, then loses his memory and ultimately things work out OK. There is the "SandMan" who was the guy who really killed Parker's father; able to shift any/all of his body to sand he is difficult to fight. And then there is the engagement of Parker and MJ; well maybe.
As with all of the other Spider-Man movies, this one is extremely well made with good story, good characters and good action. Good special effects. The only reason for not giving a 5 star is the complexity of the plot which doesn't seem to flow well.
What's great about it: Good plot, good character development, good special effects
What's not so great: Plot is complex and doesn't hang together well

Martin Lawrence goes back -- way back -- in the comedic time-traveling adventure Black Knight. Fox has done a very good job at making sure this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks nearly clean and free of any defects or imperfections. Sporting vivid colors and evenly saturated black levels, this is a very solid image that only includes a few speckles of edge enhancement during a few key scenes. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and Spanish. The 5.1 soundtrack is very enveloping with a nice array of directional sounds from both the rear and front speakers. No distortion is heard during any of the dialogue, effects, or music. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. Extra features are bountiful on this DVD edition of Black Knight, starting with a commentary track by director Gil Junger, who appears to be an insightful talker who has a lot to say about the production and working with Martin Lawrence. A "screen-specific" commentary track with Lawrence isn't quite as interesting -- this track consists of the actor being interviewed about certain aspects of the film, then the interviews are run over the scene Lawrence is describing. Four separate featurettes on the making of the film are included, each dealing with different aspects of the production. The best of these is the featurette "Construction," which looks at the building of the sets. "Choreography" features singer/dancer Paula Abdul teaching the actors to dance like 14th century peasants. "Pratfalls and Parapets" and "A Timeless Friendship" deal with the stunts in the film and the relationships between the characters. Three deleted scenes feature optional commentary by the director. It was a wise decision to trim these sequences from the final film, as they add nothing to the story or characters. Finally there is a reel of outtakes of the cast flubbing their lines, two trailers for the film, and two additional trailers for the movies Minority Report and Unfaithful.

Lawrence as today and yesterday's Black Knight

3 of 5 stars for the comedy movie Black Knight. A worker (Martin Lawrence) in a medieval theme park finds himself transported back in time to the 1300's (Middle Ages) after getting a bump on his head. Finding himself between several factions and even a plot to overthrow the king, our hero "Skywalker" even has a beautiful maiden to rescue.
Well photographed, well written and pretty funny at times, this movie is easy on your brain and entertaining. Lawrence is good and fun to watch. Yes, this is a good movie and worth watching.
What's great about it: Funny movie, Martin Lawrence

You gotta love Bolt!
on October 30, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the animated cute movie Bolt. The movie opens with an exciting adventure segment where our hero, the cute little dog, Bolt (John Travolta), is being chased by bad guys. Bolt demonstrates superhero abilities to save his owner Penny (Miley Cyrus). Well, we later learn that we were watching a movie being made and the abilities (like his super-bark) are movie magic. Well, Bolt manages to get FedExed from LA to NYC and starts his journey home. Along the way Bolt meets several new friends and discovers he is not a superhero, just a cute little dog. I won't spoil the ending.
The graphics/animation in this movie are amazing! The most life-like animation I have ever seen. Truly amazing! The characters are wonderful though I was disappointed in the hamster [the movie trailer made the hamster seem more interesting that he really turned-out-to-be]. Even knowing that Bolt's voice was Travolta, it really didn't sound "like him"; yeah it was, just not obvious. This is good fun for the whole family. Even us oldsters found alot to enjoy in this movie. I recommend it!
What's great about it: Cute characters, amazing quality of animation, good for all family

Dizzing Special Effects and Action
on October 25, 2009
Posted by: JimG944

5 of 5 movies for the Blu-Ray sci-fi movie Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen. OK, let's start with an equipment check. Blu-Ray & HDTV, sub-woofer cranked-up, lights out, popcorn in hand. Seat-belt on and here we go. Wow, you want action? You want loud booms and bangs? You want dizzing special effects? This is the movie for you! I just added ths to my list of favorite movies. The plot is relatively simple, but, it just gets in the way of the crashes, explosions and machine-on-machine combat. We have transformers from cockroach size up to monster size. We destroy a steel mill and some historical monuments. Some globe trotting with great scenery. But in summary, its all about the special effects and the transformers. A shout-out for the Blu-Ray version which has a second disk with more contents that the length of the original movie (well over 2 hours of behind the scenes). This movie is highly recommended.
What's great about it: Special Effects, action and sounds
What's not so great: Thin plot, sometimes too much action
