See Seagal, see thugs, see dead thugs, repeat...

3 of 5 stars for the Steven Seagal action movie Shadow Man. Usually I would give a higher score to a Seagal movie but this movie has a specially thin plot. In fact, if I write anything about the plot, it would be a spoiler. So let me be cryptic. Seagal has something that the bad guys want. They send thugs to get it from him. The thugs get killed. They send more thugs...
Well made, good action with plenty of Seagal's calm approach to killing people. High body count, lots of blood. Some good chases. This movie is beyond "easy on the brain" (see Seagal, see thugs, see dead thugs, repeat). Yes, recommended if you want lots of action and fights.

Four siblings turn vigilante in this action adventure story, which gets a straightforward release on DVD. Sunstorm has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo. The original audio track is in English; this version also includes an alternate track dubbed in Spanish, as well as optional Spanish subtitles. The film's original trailer is included as a bonus.

Lots of running around and fights but little plot
on December 21, 2009

1 of 5 stars for the boring movie Sunstorm. Even though it was 90 minutes, it still seemed long and boring. Lots of people running, driving, fighting and chasing all without much purpose other than to cause another poorly done fight. The saving grace is the four sisters are all pretty. Save your popcorn and find another movie. Oh, Bo Derek has a minor role and not worth it. I do not recommend this one.
What's great about it: The four sisters are pretty
What's not so great: Long, dull plot, lots of runnig around and chases without purpose

A new adaptation of the comic book story Ironman
on December 21, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the Marvel comic book turned movie, Ironman. The story was nicely modernized to include conflicts in the middle-east and also modern technology (i.e. mobile phone built into the iron suit). The story shows how our rich technology geek got "converted" into the original ironman. It shows how he later got an upgrade by developing his own tech. The scenes around his development of the flying jets is funny and later shown is how the suit is articulated to provide flying control surfaces. The how movie has a feeling of Transformers specially when the chief bad guy builds a transformers style device. Great special effects and a good look to the movie. Downey is very good in this role. Paltrow was not a powerful as she could have been. The only issue with the movie is that it seemed long for its contents. I do recommend the movie and look forward to the next installment. The blu-ray 2 disk set is packed with extra stuff.
What's great about it: Special Effects and action, modernized story line
What's not so great: A bit long for the contents

A high-speed suspense movie
on December 21, 2009

3 of 5 stars for the high-speed suspense movie Time Bomb. This movie starts off fast, in fact, I thought I was starting near the end as things were crazy. The plot centers on terrorists who have planted time bombs around a football stadium set to go off at the end of a big game. Up front, these terrorists take over a bar and set a bomb to kill all those inside. The story follows the bomb squad and an FBI detective. Of course, the guys wife and kid are at the stadium and of course the bad guys are somehow able to watch his every move.
This is a high speed movie that never stops with the action or suspense. Frankly it is a bit tiring. There really is no let-down during the story; it just keeps coming at you. There are plot twists but they are predictable and the plot surprises are guessable. So this is a good movie, but, not a great movie. I do recommend it.
What's great about it: Constant action and lots of suspense
What's not so great: Predictable plot twists and predictable plot surprises

Four high school girls out to change the world
on December 19, 2009
Posted by: JimG944
from Sunnyvale, CA
3 of 5 stars for the teen comedy movie Bratz. Hollywood loves to remake a theme when it is successful, this movie is a remake of Mean Girls with more comedy and less "social study". Same basic themes. Take four high school girls each is skilled in a differnt subject. The school has its clicks of people (Nerds, Goths, Jocks, etc.). Our girls find it easy to fit into their clicks based on their skills (the smart girl fits with the nerds in the science club, etc). The problem is these clicks cause our BFF (Best Friend Forever) girls to drift apart. So our girls work to tear down the clicks and bring harmony. All is good until the spoiled-rich-girl decides she prefers the clicks to remain.
A funny and cute movie which is pretty well made. The story is more geared towards comedy than looking at the social fabric of high school students. Yes, I recommend this movie, however, if you only have time for one movie, Mean Girls is a bit better.
What's great about it: Good comedy, likeable characters, positive messages
What's not so great: Not as good as Mean Girls

A King some Witches and a girl from the stars

4 of 5 stars for the fantasy adventure movie Stardust. A really nice fantasy movie was fun to watch. A young man lives in a town that borders a magic place; a stone wall is the dividing line. As the young man escapes his town he finds many wonders in the magic land. The movie addresses a couple of generations of time and events. In the future generation, an old king about to die needs to name one of his seven sons as new king. They are sent on a quest. Oh, and the sons have a habit of killing each other. And then there is this girl or is she a star? Not really sure. Yes, a little confusing, but, a funny and nice story. Very well made with a good look and feel. Special effects are well integrated.
All in all, a fun, cute, interesting movie with a couple of plot surprises. Well worth the time to watch. Recommended for teens and up. BTW, Michelle Pfeiffer is still beautiful and one of my favorites--she plays on of the witches (oh, did I mention there are witches?).
What's great about it: A really nice fantasy story, All the elements: King, Witches, Hero and Girl

Why do Zombies move in slow motion?
on December 18, 2009

4 of 5 stars for the creepy sci-fi movie Shaun of the Dead. I started watching this movie with low expectations (look at the cover, come on...). As it started, I was prepared to be disappointed. So meet Shaun a male air-head drifting thru a dull life. Totally asleep about things around hm. Shaun barely notices when those people around him start to ah ah change. Yeah, change. As the people around him become zombies, they (as you would expect) move much more slowly than normal people. The zombie disease is passed person to person by a bite (zombies like to bite). So with little purpose or plan, Shaun starts to collect the people in his life who are not infected and take them to a safe place; their corner bar.
A very British movie, a kinda odd and funny movie. It turned out to exceed my expectations enough that I'm giving it a 4 star rating. I do recommend this movie but not for young people; its kinda bloody.
What's great about it: A fun zombie movie, odd-ball comedy

Interesting photography, quick crisp editing
on December 17, 2009

3 of 5 stars to the very odd action movie RocknRolla. The first thing to notice about this movie is the fast crisp style of editing with cut-away scenes that jump around to various story lines. The overall color tones of the photography were kinda like a colorized black and white movie. I think they were going for an old "mobster" (gang) look and feeling. The next thing is too many characters that are not well defined. I was constantly trying to remember who I was seeing and what they have to do with the story. The background was pulsating and quick paced to match the editing style of the movie. So, I just finished watching the whole movie and yet I'm not sure that I can write a summary other than: Russian mafia meets up with London's biggest crime boss. It is a long movie at 1h54m and felt long as I was constantly lost. This one needs a couple of watchings to get it sorted out.
So, I'll give it a marginal recommendation and suggest you be prepared to really focus on the movie with your brain engaged.
What's great about it: Photography, crisply edited, well matched music
What's not so great: Too many characters that are unclearly defined, hard to follow

5 of 5 stars for comedy movie Night at the Museum, Battle of the Smithsonian (aka Night at the Museum 2). If you have not yet seen Night at the Museum (#1), stop reading this review and go watch it--a funny movie! This movie continues the story from #1 with the same basic characters and adds a few new characters including a mondo-bad-guy. I am very happy to have Ben Stiller continue in the lead role of Larry and Robin Williams plus Owen Wilson in the roles made famous in #1. To this mix, we add a new "girl friend" for Larry and Hank Azaria as the big bad guy.
The story starts out with all of our friends from the National History Museum being moved into storage at the Smithsonian complex. Not good. They happened to also store the magic tablet along with the other exhibits. Fun in the store room begins and various things/people come alive at night. Lots of fun on a much larger scale than #1. I won't spoil any of the fun, but, let me tell you my favorite scene is the entire Air & Space Museum at Smithsonian comes alive and they try to launch/fly everything within; wild!
Very well made movie with great effects that are subtle. Fun plot, well acted and a good time for the whole family. I highly recommend this movie--however, you gotta watch the first Night at the Museum movie before watching this installment!

A well crafted suspense movie, just creepy enough

3 of 5 stars for the cop-killing psycho suspense movie Eye See You. When I first read the product description I thought that this would be a great movie. Then I put it into the DVD player thinking oh this wasn't going to be good. Well, I watched it and decided it was actually good. So, we have Stallone in the role of a cop trying to track down a cop killer. Early-on the psycho goes after Stallone's family. That pushes his character into serious mental problems for which he needs help at a remote snow-covered group hospital in the middle of nowhere. The hospital specializes in helping cops with problems (drinking, drugs, mind). So rather than spoil it, let's just say this becomes a good creepy suspense movie.
Very interesting settings for the hospital. Well acted. Stallone showed good maturity as an actor by not over-powering te movie or other charaters. Well made suspense movie. Worth watching and I do recommend it.
What's great about it: Stallone gives a well balanced performance, good plot
