Two very strange guys as role models
on October 15, 2009

3 of 5 stars for the comedy movie Role Models. Take Seann William Scott (American Pie fame) and add Paul Rudd and you have the "Bigs" (aka the role models). How did we get there? OK, these two guys have the job of doing school road-shows to sell the kids an "Energy Drink". Well, buzzed on the drink, the guys get into some ah ah trouble. The judge says, community service with a group called "Sturdy Wings" (a "big brother" kind of group). So our two heros get paired as "Bigs" for two problem kids.
Rudd's kid is into live acting fantasy combat (like dungeons and dragons). Scott's kid as a bad attitude. Needless to say, our heros are not into doing this community service work. The movie is all about how the "Bigs" grow and develop helpful relationships with the kids ("Littles"). It is fun how the four come together at the end to help each other.
A funny, nice and entertaining movie. Oh, I should point out that it has adult themes and some nudity so it is really a movie for "Bigs" not "Littles". Worth watching!
What's great about it: Seann William Scott does his usual character

Leslie Greif directs this adaptation of Ray Cooney's hit British play, a throwback farce about mistaken identity. Chevy Chase plays Henry Perkins, a listless late-middle-aged executive in a wax fruit company; his wife, Carol (Penelope Ann Miller), is similarly bored, a struggling sculptor and housewife in Hoboken, NJ. On his way home from work to a surprise birthday party Carol is throwing, he accidentally switches briefcases with a Russian mobster. He opens the suitcase at a local bar and discovers five million dollars inside. He rushes home and tries to arrange a flight to Barcelona for Carol and him so they can take the money and run. Detective Sergeant Genero (Armand Assante) shows up later; he saw Henry at the bar and is suspicious of his actions. The Perkins, along with their friends Vic and Gina Johnson (Christopher McDonald and Alex Meneses), concoct an elaborate plan to fool the detective, which is only complicated by Carol getting sloppy drunk, the arrival of a homicide detective (Kevin Sussman), a famous gallery owner (Rebecca Wisocky), Henry's boss (Robert Loggia), a frustrated standup comic cabbie (Guy Torry), two more identical briefcases, and the party guests. The comic action reaches a climax in a standoff with Mafia kingpin Mr. Big (Zoltan Butuc). Starz Home Entertainment brings this comedy home with an anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen picture and mutliple featurettes on the production that include bits on the location as well as how the film was marketed.

A mature comedy movie
on October 13, 2009

3 of 5 stars for the mature comedy movie Funny Money. Surprising to see Chevy Chase as a mature man when I remember him as a young man on SNL. The comedy in this movie is mostly verbal and situational rather than comedy movements (of which Chase is so well known). The plot is rather simple: an accidential exchange of identical briefcases leaves Chase with $$$$$$ rather than a sandwitch. Alot of comedy about this discovery between Chase, his wife and some family friends. More comedy about those who lost the money and their search to find it. And when the two groups find each other ... oh yeah, funny.
Again, this is not a slap-stick comedy. It is well written with great dialog, situations and events. This is an easy on the brain movie and is entertaining. I do recommend it.
What's great about it: Chevy Chase, great comedy dialog
What's not so great: A thin plot to fill an entire movie

Johnny Walker (Anthony Michael Hall) is a hot-shot high-school quarterback who receives intoxicating offers from spirited college recruiters in this adolescent teen comedy. Bathroom humor and sight gags are strung together in a story involving booze, broads, and other benefits for the coveted quarterback. Robert Downey Jr., Uma Thurman, and Paul Gleason co-star. Even cameos from Jim McMahon and Howard Cosell can't save this feature from itself, though it isn't the fault of the cast.

A Typical 1980's teen comedy
on October 13, 2009

2 of 5 stars to the 1980's typical teen comedy movie Johnny Be Good. To the movies credit, it has several young actors who turn out to be name-brand people. How about Uma Thurman? Robert Downey Jr? Anthony Michael Hall? So that was good.
The plot is about a high school football star who is trying to decide which college to attend. So, we follow AM Hall as his character visits several colleges who each roll-out the red carpet with VIP perks to get him to decide in their favor. The whole thing would be OK if you can possible believe that Hall COULD be a football star. My thinking is that on his first tackle, he'd be broken-up into little parts. He simply was not believeable as a star player.
So, the movie was mildly funny with the usual plot twists and gags. Nothing special to recommend this movie. As I said at the start, a typical 1980's style comedy. Oh, it had too much 1980's synthesized music--my head hurts.
You can skip this one.
What's great about it: Several young actors before they became name-brand
What's not so great: Typical not-so funny 1980's teen comedy

Michael Bay's sci-fi action film Armageddon comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. The English track gives every speaker in the system a real workout. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include theatrical trailers and the music video for Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." This disc will please casual fans of the film, but those looking for a deeper understanding of the film will want to look at the Criterion DVD release.

A global killer - nothing survives!
on October 11, 2009

4 of 5 stars for this sci-fi movie. A global killer--nothing survives, not even bacteria. An asteroid the size of Texas is en route to the Earth. With only 18 days before impact what do you do? Some early arriving asteroids (basketball size) rake NYC doing extreme damage. The only choice? Nuke it. How do you do that? Send a crew to drill a hole into the asteroid, implant the nuke, blast-it to break the asteroid into little bits. OK, who do you get to drill the hole? How about a crew of rough-necks (lead by Bruce Willis)? Things get complex when it turns out the asteroid is solid metal and it breaks drill bits.
Very strong acting and characters. Willis really hits a home run with his character. Great special effects. The concept is a bit old, but, this is a fresh version. I do recommend this movie!
What's great about it: Willis' Character is great! Novel approach to doomsday story
What's not so great: It is very long

Dirty Gritty Violent Sci-Fi movie
on October 8, 2009

4 of 5 stars for this dirty gritty violent sci-fi movie. So a virus strikes forcing the world to enclose the entire country to prevent spread to the rest of the world. Ultimately a modern day great wall of China is built to secure the quarantine. It is assumed the whole population dies from the virus. Wrong! Many survive (hummm, natural immunity). After many years of stability, the virus spreads to England where the authorites decide they need to capture one of those immune people to create a cure. So, a para-military task force goes beyond the wall. They first go to a large city where they encounter a large collection of people who have gone "primative native" and attack the force. During their escape, they get linked to a different set of people who have gone "knights and castles".
This movie is very dirty and gritty. The most graphic violence that I've seen since some of those movies in the 70's. Plenty of blood, guts, bullets, body parts and dead people. Good action, good special effects, interesting plot. Worth watching, but, be warned, it is graphic!
What's great about it: Interesting plot, great action
What's not so great: too much graphic violence

Humans vs. Bugs

4 stars of 5 for this classical sci-fi movie. Yeah, I've seen Starship Troopers lots of times. It is a unique story with great characters and well produced. This is a really fun sci-fi movie to watch. Great special effects and a nice future look. As always, my only complaint is why send ground troops with under-powered weapons to attack the "bugs" without air support? Oh, well. I do recommend this movie.
What's great about it: Good Sci-fi plot, good special effects
What's not so great: Illogical to send ground troops against bugs

What an opening 5 minutes! Wow!

5 of 5 stars for this exciting suspense movie. The first 5 minutes of the movie is an amazing set of scenes acting as a kick-start for this high-tension, suspenseful action movie. Right down to the little ball-bearing rolling towards to camera covered in blood--amazing effects!
Travolta's character is truly evil--calm, cool, collected but evil. Frankly, he is really a terrorist trying to sway events using violence. Ruthlessly cold, he doesn't mind killing people to get his way. For his purposes, he needs a top-class computer hacker (Jackman) who he recruits via Halle Berry's character.
Thru the whole movie, there are twists and turns. Travolta even makes a speech to Jackman about how Harry Hudini did his tricks "mis-direction"! Several times, you learn things are not as they appeared to mis-direct efforts. Travolta is in total control.
Lots of action scenes, chases, explosions, machine guns, RPGs, etc. The ending scenes have several surprise twists; remember, mis-direction!
What's great about it: Amazing action and suspense, great special effects

3 of 5 stars for this action/suspense movie. Lots of high stress action as several people follow the trail of a dirty gun used in the murder of a cop and also used by a boy to shoot his abusive father. A very god movie that will keep your focus from start to end. I do recommend this movie.
What's great about it: Interesting chain of events

Recharging the Sun

4 of 5 stars for this exciting and suspenseful sci-fi movie. An unusual storyline with solid action and sci-fi special effects. A bit far-fetched (traveling to the Sun to explode a bomb to re-energize the Sun), but hey, its Sci-fi. Very dramatic photographic and editing style with extreme quick cuts during the action fight scenes. This is a great movie! Frankly, I am surprised I'd never heard of it before now. Highly recommended. Oh make sure your sub-woofer is cranked-up!
What's great about it: New fresh Sci-fi plot well executed
What's not so great: This movie is a well kept secret--more should watch this!

Weak special effects detract from average movie
on October 7, 2009

3 of 5 stars to this average sci-fi movie. Set late in WWII, some ancient eggs are discovered which hatch to deliver a few hundred flying dinosars. A bomber is forced to land on that island and you can pretty much guess the rest. Below average special effects with composite shots that look obviously composited. Too many bad composites. Oh, did I mention the bomber has an A-bomb on-board? Wanna guess the ending?
What's great about it: Typical Sci-fi movie, nothing special
What's not so great: Weak special effect which were obvious composites
