Robert Zemeckis' special effects laden black comedy Death Becomes Her comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. This is a sub-par release from Universal.

See right thru Hawn

3 of 5 stars for the comedy movie Death Becomes Her. How can you not like a movie where Goldie Hawn walks around with a shotgun made hole thru her tummy--yep, you can see right through it. Oh, and when she sits down on a couch and the long wooden handle from a tool pokes right thru. This is a star packed movie (Willis, Hawn, Streep and Caine). The story line is that Hawn & Streep want to drink a "foutain-of-youth" potion (from Isabelle Rossellini). They both need Willis to do "make-up" and body repairs. Ultimately the girls decide the Willis needs to live forever also to continue taking care of them. Well, Willis has other ideas. This is a well written movie. Well acted and richly photographed. Funny and worth watching!
What's great about it: Funny script, well photographed and well acted
What's not so great: dated special effects

Love and romance are in full bloom in the Hollywood romantic comedy America's Sweethearts. Columbia has done a nice job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Like the stars of Hollywood itself, this picture shines bright with almost no imperfections anywhere on the transfer. The colors and black levels all look even and bright while the fleshtones look natural and well-rendered. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English. This 5.1 soundtrack is very nice, though somewhat subdued. There are a few instances where the surround sound feature was engaged, though the overall quality of this track is very subtle. All aspects of the dialogue, music, and effects are free of any excessive distortion. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. America's Sweethearts includes only a scant few extra features. The first is five deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Joe Roth. None of the scenes are overly interesting, and the director's comments seem to be very short and brief. Also included on this disc are some thin production notes and theatrical trailers for the movies America's Sweethearts, My Best Friend's Wedding, and The Mask of Zorro.

Star Packed comedy

4 of 5 stars for the star-packed comedy America's Sweethears. What a cast of stars: Zeta-Jones, Roberts, Crystal, Arkin, Walken, Cusack. Mostly filmed on location at the Hyatt Lake Las Vegas, this comedy is about two movie stars who were a couple making their last big film. The focus of the movie is the launch of the new film and the benefits ($$) of the two (Cusack & Zeta-Jones) getting back together as America's Sweethearts. To complicate matters ZJ is now dating a stud (Azaria) and Cusack is in love with ZJ's sister (Julia Roberts). Throw in a crazy nutcase movie director (Walken), some slimy PR guys (Arkin, Crystal) and you have funny situations. Well written, well produced and great acting combined for a fun movie. I do recommend this movie!

A very different view of the future Earth
on October 23, 2009

5 of 5 stars for the sci-fi movie Fifth Element. OK, how do you summarize this movie? Sigh. OK, take three stone symbols which are a key to a protective weapon useable to keep away some nasty aliens who want to take the world, add in sexy girl (Milla Jovovich) who is a guardian of the weapon, a taxi driver (Bruce Willis), more aliens, some priests who know the secrets, an evil traitor working with the bad aliens and you have a really wild sci-fi story. Oh, it all takes place on the Earth in the dstant future. Did I mention the taxi moves in all 3 dimensions?
An expansive vision of a whole different Earth with many different types of beings. Bruce Willis does a great job in the Sci-Fi movie. Really good story and well executed. Extensive special effects and really wild sets. This is a must see sci-fi movie!
What's great about it: Bruce Willis, great plot, amazing vision and cinamatography
What's not so great: Complex plot with lots of people/groups/aliens

Good plot, poor execution, dull characters
on October 21, 2009

2 of 5 stars for the action-adventure movie Sharpshooter. Sigh, I had high expectations for this movie based on the trailer and the opening scenes. In the opening, a former CIA hitman is doing a hostage rescue from two high speed cars rolling thru a desert somewhere in the middle-east. Starting with only a high-power rifle, he starts the ambush. A very impressive setup and execution. From there it all went wrong. The hitman character is toally flat and 2-dimensional. Trying to achieve a rigid army-like character, the actor achieves a total boring, don't care, uninteresting character. Our hitman is talked into taking one more job before he retires. As he starts to plan the hit we get the feeling all is not right. Yep, after he hits the target, "they" will hit him. Frankly, the action ain't so good; the characters are bland and don't care. For a movie with potential, this turned out badly. Don't waste your time.
What's great about it: Interesting plot
What's not so great: Poorly executed, flat dull characters, zero DVD extras

Extreme Road-Rage

4 of 5 stars for the extreme road-rage movie: Death Race. Set in the future where prisons are run by corporations "for profit" they stream on internet a new sport called The Death Race. Prisoners are forced to drive race cars complete with armor and weapons where the goal is to not just win, but, be the only survivor of the race. Our hero (played by Jason Statham, one of my favorites) gets rail-roaded into prison and forced into driving.
This is a sci-fi movie which is richly and expansively photographed. Yeah, special effects, but, mostly great sets and live action. Really a nice blend of reality and effects. Great action, lots of bullets, lots of smash-ups. This is a recommended movie.
What's great about it: Jason Statham, balanced live-action/special-effects

James Bond, no; Indiana Jones, yes

5 of 5 stars for the movie The Da Vinci Code. This is the first of (currently) three books in the Robert Langdon series. Langdon (Tom Hanks) is a specialist in symbology (the history and meaning of various symbols from different cultures. Langdon is called to help the police in Paris with a murder. This starts a long chain of events in which various religious factions are chasing "the Holy Grail". Langdon gains the help of a police officer who is the daughter of the murder victim. As the complex puzzle grows, Langdon reaches out for help from an old friend. This chain of events has several surprises as we learn some people are not who they appear to be (e.g. the lead police detective is actually a member of one of the religious factions and is trying to frame Langdon for the murder). Even Langdon's old friend is not exactly who he appears, nor is his butler! Complex, interesting, exciting and compelling is this story. Langdon is no James Bond, but, he does well during action moments. Langdon somewhat reminds me of Indiana Jones; college profession who has interesting adventures with historical artifacts and legends.
A shout-out to Ron Howard for outstanding Direction of this movie! I feel the movie was totally faithful to the book. The last 5 minutes of the movie is totally wonderful (from Langdon's shaving accident). I can watch it over and over. On the Blu-Ray, there are details on how this scene was created. Simply Wow!
Much has been written and debated over the historical validity of Brown's story and assertions. If you set aside those various debates and opinions and just take it as a story of fiction, it is a very good movie! I highly recommend this movie!
What's great about it: Faithful to the Book, solid acting and directing

Danel Craig continues the Bond tradition
on October 17, 2009

5 of 5 stars for the James Bond 007 action movie: Quantum of Solace. As with every other James Bond movie, you can expect rich big settings with grand sweeping action, exotic international locations and insanely big action. QoS is on par with other Bond movies but is not in my top 10 list.
QoS follows the events following Casino Royale (the remake of a few years ago, not the comedy version of the 70's). Daniel Craig plays Bond in both CR and QoS. He is a good, though not great, version of Bond. I do like Judi Dench as "M". She is strong, solid and believeable in the role. The key point to this movie is a new secret organization which MI6 learns of the hard-way. The organization is named Quantum of Solace. QoS turns out to be primarily a "business" organization trying thru illegal means to extract extreme profits from a country. The story has Bond jumping around the world to chase after the bad guys. The downside to this movie is that QoS doesn't really form as a group and the "big bad guys" are not as grand as in other Bond movies.
The Blu-Ray of this is stunning with extreme sound quality. Further it is packed with extra contents. I was wondering how they blew-up that hotel. Even with the limitations I mentioned, this is a 5 star movie and well worth the time to watch it.
What's great about it: Rich big settings in international locations, great action
What's not so great: bad guys not as grand as other Bond bad guys

The Exorcist gets an update in the Winona Ryder horror thriller Lost Souls. New Line has done a fine job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer, though for some reason this film suffers from an excessive amount of grain and dirt. Most of the color patterns and black levels are even, though the film has a very "drab" look to it (not unlike the Tim Burton horror film Sleepy Hollow). Edge enhancement, digital artifacting, and shimmer are all absent from this print. Audio for Lost Souls includes both a DTS soundtrack as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix. Both tracks are clean and concise, using surround effects effectively. Both the DTS and 5.1 tracks are clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. Although this edition of Lost Souls is not a coveted "platinum edition" (as is often found in the New Line catalog), it still boasts a strong array of extra features. A commentary track by director Janusz Kaminski and director of photography Mauro Fiore enlightens the viewer on behind-the-scenes stories and some technical aspects of the production. Also included on this disc are five short deleted scenes, as well as five alternate takes, some cast and crew filmographies, and a theatrical trailer for Lost Souls. Those interested in demonic possession, Winona Ryder, or a well-produced DVD will be satisfied with this edition of Lost Souls.

Cross between the Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby

3 of 5 stars to this suspense/horror movie. A cross between the Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby done in an interesting style of photography and lighting. Interesting and fun to watch. Not really that scary or suspense-ful. Not the strongest finish, but, still OK. If you got the time, its worth the watch.
What's not so great: Not really that scary or suspense-ful

Fans of this modern-day Bill and Ted-style film will delight in this DVD edition from 20th Century-Fox. Offering a raucous commentary and a smattering of notable extras, this is a substantial packaging for a rather unsubstantial movie. The picture is a solid 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that effectively highlights the day-glo colors of the film's more garish locales. There's little use of sound here, but the Dolby Digital 5.1 format occasionally gets a chance to shine. As for extras, the viewers get a commentary track from director Danny Leiner and stars Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott. The track is certainly worth a listen, if only for the fact that the trio appears to be completely intoxicated. They trade anecdotes and observations about the filming, in speech that becomes increasingly slurred as the film progresses. It's definitely a change from the standard commentaries usually offered on DVD. Also included are a handful of extended scenes. While none of these are truly riotous, they're occasionally amusing. Additionally, the DVD includes a trailer and three TV spots, a promotional featurette, and a music video from the film's soundtrack. Those who love the type of moronic humor Dude, Where's My Car? showcases will certainly find much to recommend this DVD. All others will only find more of what kept them away in the first place.

Funny but dumb sort-of sci-fi movie
on October 16, 2009

3 of 5 stars for this funny but dumb sort-of sci-fi movie. This movie combines Ashton Kutcher with Seann William Scott (American Pie fame) in the lead roles as "stoners" who forgot what happened last night. On their journey to discover the past, they find an interesing trail of money, women, aliens and other strange people/characters. Let's not forget that Jennifer Garner appears in the movie as a girlfriend. We specially liked the 5 alien women in the black jumpsuits. A wild, funny, odd and interesting movie. I do recommend this one! Oh, what the heck is a transfunctioner?
What's great about it: Kutcher & Scott & Garner

Made for television, Moving Target bears a few faint echoes of the 1986 theatrical feature Out of Bounds. Jason Bateman plays a teenaged musician returning home from summer camp. He is hardly greeted with open arms; as a matter of fact, his family has moved out in his absence. Compounding this traumatic turn of events, Jason becomes the quarry of a syndicate hit man (Jack Wagner)--and of the US Justice Department. It dawns on the boy that he'd better locate his family before anyone else does. Jason Bateman's leading lady in Moving Target is Chynna Phillips, daughter of musicians John and Michelle Phillips, and later the star of the TV biopic Roxanne: The Prize Pulitzer.

Slow dull "classical" 1980's style movie
on October 16, 2009

2 stars of 5 for this slow dull "classical" 1980's style movie. This movie has a young Jason Bateman in the lead. Very very very slow and dull with a few moments of bad 1980's style music. To our relief the background music (which is very annoying) is kept to a minimum. Though it attempts to be an action/suspense movie, it achieves neither. I'd suggest skipping this movie.
What's great about it: Jason Bateman
What's not so great: annoying 1980's music
