Higher Learning includes an excellent 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that presents the movie in nearly pristine colors. In the opening shot the bright red, white, and blue of the American flag shines and presents one of numerous impressive examples on this picture. Although it lacks the near perfection of reference transfers, it falls only slightly from this perch. Similar to the image transfer, this 5.1-channel Dolby Digital audio track features remarkable levels of clarity. The numerous soul, alternative rock, and metal songs blaze across the sound field and add considerable power. The dialogue is easily understandable, even in the heated moments, and the surrounds are utilized nicely throughout the running time. This disc also contains an effective Dolby Surround track, which only drops slightly below its companion in terms of depth and force. Higher Learning features an enjoyable commentary from writer/director John Singleton that contains plenty of intriguing thoughts about the story. Much of the material in this script stems from his own experiences while attending college at U.S.C. Singleton openly explains how numerous scenes originated and shows a refreshing willingness to describe his own life and its connection to the film. It's also impressive to see a filmmaker willing to admit that he's still growing and there are flaws in his creations. Singleton utilizes a conversational tone that makes the track entertaining and insightful without the highbrow tone of some directors. This release also includes selected filmographies for Singleton, Omar Epps, and the other major actors. Full-frame theatrical trailers also exist for this film, including Poetic Justice and Boyz 'N the Hood.

Ice Cube showed his range in this movie, as America's worst nightmare, a black man with an education, With Lawerence Fishbourne as a teacher, which is something he is a custom doing in John Singleton's movies.
What's great about it: Ice Cube as Fudge
What's not so great: Nothing

After a lackluster release in 1998, John Singleton's groundbreaking first film, Boyz 'n the Hood, finally gets the proper DVD treatment with this two-disc special edition. The film is presented in both a 1.85:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original aspect ratio and a 1.33:1 full-screen transfer that has been formatted to fit a standard television screen. Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround Sound audio tracks are available in English, French, and Spanish, along with subtitles in the same three languages. Bonus features include audio commentary by Singleton, deleted scenes, theatrical trailers, the documentary Friendly Fire: Making of an Urban Legend, and music videos for Compton's Most Wanted's "Growin' Up in the Hood" and Tevin Campbell's "Just Ask Me To."

Greatness...With first time actor Ice Cube making his mark on the acting scene and Cuba Gooding Jr. showing off his range of acting, John Singleton had no problems showing his version of hood life in South Central.
What's great about it: Ice Cube as an actor
What's not so great: Started the stereo-type for ghetto life

The Hughes brothers nightmarish urban tale of one teen's desperate attempt to escape the brutal projects of Watts, CA, arrives on DVD in this New Line Home Video release. Viewable in either the original 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio or standard 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan, and featuring an English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in addition to an alternate French Dolby Digital Stereo track, this release also features optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. Extra features include star highlights, cast and crew bios, theatrical trailers, and a Hughes brothers interview.

Boyz N Da Hood revised

Raw, real, and to the point, this movie is a book report about America's love for violence, no matter what the area is. High point of this movie has to be the acting of Jada Pinkett. She really showed the love that most females in hood have. That's right, not females from the hood wants to be video vixen
What's great about it: The realness
What's not so great: It help started the stereo-type for black actors

Allen and Albert Hughes followed up their successful debut, Menace II Society, with the sweeping crime drama Dead Presidents. That film comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, making this Disney/Buena Vista disc difficult to recommend to anyone other than fans of the film.

I like this movie but it was a disappointment, because they only did one robbery and that was unsuccessful. This movie stayed on the war too long to make this a good quality movie
What's great about it: The Retro 70s look
What's not so great: Should have had at 3 robberies

Will the real Spidey please stand up

Okay is it just me, but where are the one liners that we know and love. You know how Spidey usually swings in and while beating up the bad guys have those comical one liners that sets him apart from the other super-heroes. This movie is sucks, but Doc Oct is brillant and the only high point of the movie. The writers stayed true to his characters, but didn't care about the main character
What's great about it: Doc Oct

Well forget what everybody else is saying about this movie, because it sucks. This movie did the same thing the first two did, which is character development. How many times do you have to express that Peter Parker loves Mary Jane, Harry hates Spiderman, and Spiderman saves the day. This movie was everywhere with no common plot that keeps everything together. It sucks, plain and simple. If you are a true fan of movies and Spiderman, than you know this movie really sucks

I like this one better than the Fellowship, but it still lacks enouhg action for me. To be honest, since the first was so horribly done, I knew then that I wouldn't like the rest
What's great about it: Orando Bloom shows off
What's not so great: The whole movie

This was to be the new Star Wars, yeah right

The movie sucks for me because it was building up to be really good and just ended. I know its part of a trilogy but it ends with no real ending. The next Star Wars saga is too much for this series. It's not good at all
What's great about it: Special Effects
What's not so great: The whole movie
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Some have criticized this two-disc special edition of the mega box-office smash Spider-Man, but those pans are way off base. In reality, there is little, if anything, wrong with this DVD. To begin with, the visual presentation, framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic (yes, there is a full-frame edition out there to confuse consumers), is near perfect. Detail is solid and colors are vivid. In addition, the darker scenes, a crucial element of the film, are stable, with no signs of breakdown. The auditory part of this set, presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital (in both English and French) is both aggressive and crisp. Dialogue is never washed out by sound effects, while at the same time, the use of those effects with the surround speakers is generous. The real marvel of this disc though are the special features, and they are plentiful. The first disc, with the movie, not only contains subtitled facts about the production and the history of Spider-Man, numerous television spots and theatrical trailers (for this and other Columbia/TriStar films), and bibliographies for the main cast, but also two full-length, scene-specific commentaries, one from director Sam Raimi, co-producers Grant Curtis and Laura Ziskin, and star Kirsten Dunst and the second from visual effects producer John Dykstra and his team. The second disc continues the supplements. Divided into two sections, "The Web of Spider-Man -- The Comic" and "The Goblin's Lair -- The Movie." As you might have figured, the first section covers the history and mythology of the comic book series. There is a documentary from the comic book artists over the years, a comic book archive of Spidey over the years, galleries for the villains and the girlfriends, and more. The second section covers the film, with a nice documentary on the making of the film, with plenty of behind-the-scene footage, and an even longer E! Entertainment television special called "Spider-mania." In addition are a couple of very short screen tests, profiles on director Raimi and composer Danny Elfman, a gag reel, and plenty of conceptual art and production paintings. If this all weren't enough, also included are a number of DVD-ROM features for each disc, including the ability to create your own commentary. There is plenty here to please any fan of this film, from those that grew up with this classic comic book character, to those that are newly introduced.

You would think that with all the special effects and different directors that are out there, Hollywood only came up with this. I hated this movie from beginning to the end. They changed Spidey into non-funny action hero
What's great about it: Spidey on the big screen
What's not so great: Spidey was on the big screen
