Excellent with Terrific Customer Support
on March 6, 2018

from Eau Claire, WI
I'm going to break this review into several sections, giving each a letter grade and an explanation for the grade I've chosen:
Aesthetics A- The packaging is really nice and makes a statement to a potential purchaser. Happily, it is functionally boxed and the set-up instructions and other information are right on top, making installation planning easier. The unit itself is, well, less dramatic than other similar devices offered by other manufacturers. It's got an Apple-like simplicity of design, with three ~7" tall white panels, one of which has the status indicator showing. And yet, it seems a bit bulky and unsophisticated, but aesthetics are, of course, in the eyes of the user. And in this case, it may be a case that function is driving the form.
Setup C- Despite the step-by-step instructions which appear very straightforward, I quickly got hung-up on the steps. There are 2 major issues. First, jargon (how many of us really know how to step up our router in "Bridge/AP Mode"?) [But see next section!] Second, legibility. You must enter a password that is on a VERY small label in VERY small font (.5?) on the back of the device. If you are over 30, I suggest a magnifying glass!
Technical Support A++. When I got stumped I knew I needed some help and the support line number is prominently displayed several places. I called and was told that no agents were available and to leave a message with name, etc. Reluctantly, I did so, thinking I've experienced this put-off before. Surprise! A really patient, helpful, and encouraging rep called me about 20 minutes later and talked me through where I got stuck and insisted on staying on with me to make sure I completed everything successfully. What a reassuring man, and he never once made me feel stupid, even if at times I must have seemed so. GREAT customer support!
Functionality A. Within a few minutes after completing set-up, the app showed me which devices it had checked and their status. Very clear, very simple. The fact that I was able to set up the Bitdefender Box 2 without having to change any passwords on my many connected devices made it much more likely it will be used and appreciated.
In sum: So far, it is really an excellent safeguard in a day and age when such reassurances give a person some sense of security and control.

A Gorgeous, Functional Laptop
on October 21, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
Simply put, this is one of the most beautiful functioning pieces of technology I have ever seen. It comes in a jewel-box-like gold and white packaging. The laptop itself is the same colors and they are gorgeous. The keys and keyboard are white (see below) and can be back lit with gentle blue lighting.* The tactile feedback is excellent. Just opening the box tells you this is a premium laptop in virtually every respect. It is thin and relatively light. Overall visual and tactile effects are terrific, and my photos can’t do it justice.
The screen’s resolution (1920 x 1080, refresh @ 60 HZ) is excellent and the it really “pops.” It, too, is a delight on the eyes and, more critically, the touchscreen is very responsive. It has the capability to responds to taps and slide finger inputs as does the touch pad. Anyone who has used an IPhone or Android will find this an easy transition. With 8 gigs of RAM and a Core I7 (Gen 8) processor, it is fast!
HP clearly went to a lot of trouble to distinguish this computer from others by including many thoughtful and useful features. Like music or want to hear your Skype communications more clearly? The Bang and Olufsen speakers that stretch across the top of the keyboard offer surprisingly good output and enhanced voice clarity. Speaking of which, if you need to be seen over the Internet, the dual cameras are flanked by 2 LED lights that will be useful in a dark setting. Need to carry the Spectre? A thought faux-leather slip case comes with it. Working on a small airplane table? You can activate airplane mode with one button tap and be confident your laptop won’t slide thanks to 3 very grippy “feet” that run the width of the machine.
Is it a perfect laptop? Not totally, but very close. Gripes are few and do not affect its great functionality. Like most, I dislike the “bloatware” that came preloaded, but I can’t tell which wonderfully useful apps were install by Windows or HP. The converter “brick” seems ridiculously oversized. The farthest the screen will tilt is just about ½ inch from ideal for those of us who occasionally like to work standing up. There are no USB ports or card readers, but there are 3 USB-C and Thunderbolt ports which will require adapters for many users with traditional flash drives or SD cards. Obviously the smaller ports contribute to the trim size of the Spectre, a good tradeoff. The lovely white keyboard stayed cleaned during my use, but over time might get pretty grimy.
In sum, if your company won’t buy one of these gorgeous, high-powered laptops for you, splurged on yourself. You won’t regret it.
*The literature that came with the Spectre included the standard disclaimer that colors and features “may vary.” I hope not!

Good, Simple, but Not the Best
on August 14, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn

In a world where there are so many printers from so many different companies, it is not unusual to have a couple of different ones sitting besides a computer. I currently have 4, from a small label-only printer to a large multi-function machine with automatic duplexing and other bells & whistles. Each does its job well and reliably. I was intrigued to try the newest photo-printer from HP, and the results were, as noted above, good--which is to say in this day and age, average.
The positives are many: installation (including connecting to the network through wi-fi) was a delight! The HP app is beautiful, efficient, and fast. It does almost everything automatically, asking only for you to make a couple of basic decisions, and it helps with useful suggestions. It's just about as easy to install as is a toaster.
Paper loading is relatively easy, but you must remove (also very easy) the output tray. In an era where flimsiness seems to be the norm, everything about this printer seems very solid. There's an unexpected sturdiness to the cover and other parts, and when something is intended to click into place, it does so firmly and, again, solidly. The "feel" of the machine inspires confidence in workmanship and likely durability.
Processing speed shames some other (older) printers. From the time I clicked "print" to the start of printing was near-instantaneous.
Some dimensions buyers might want to consider: It's not very tall and would easily fit on a 7" high self, if one did not need to raise the cover. But it is WIDE: (about 18") and deep (16" without the output tray extension).
The screen interface is SMALL and monochrome. The bright
backlight is nice, but it is hard to read with a small (non-adjustable) font.
As for the real purpose, producing high-quality prints, it does fine. There are only 2 cartridges (black and tri-color) and while they produce fine prints for sharing and everyday use, they simply do not compare favorably with more advanced technologies and printers with five or more color cartridges. In sum, a nice printer with some nice features, and no one should avoid it unless he or she needs very high quality output.

Good Sound but Ridiculous Complexity
on July 12, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
I’ve owned and enjoyed JBL products for decades. It’s one of the first brands I think of when I want high quality audio. The Everest Elite 750NC enhances my positive perception that JBL usually offers excellent sound reproduction. The earphones’ design is not unique when compared to others—the basic design has after all been around since WWII—but it is very comfortable and could easily be warn for long flights. The noise canceling function is very good in most settings. (Note, however, these do not appear to be ANSI-rated for ear protection when working with machinery or in other industrial environments, although I could not find any such warning or information in the voluminous, unreadable multi-lingual documentation. In sum, here are the positives:
Comfort;
Very good music reproduction;
Easy Bluetooth pairing;
Rechargeable battery;
Includes compact case, necessary cords, and airplane adapter;
Good noise-canceling function.
What more could one ask? A lot in this case. JBL seems to have fallen into the contemporary trap of equating complexity with quality. I’ve owned high-quality noise canceling (non-Bluetooth) headphones for more than a decade, and it has ONE function button. The JBLs have SEVEN extremely small controls, all clustered on the right earphone. One would think that mastering these would be helped by informative instructions. Not so! Obviously, JBL intends to sell these world-wide, and thus includes a “Quick Start Guide” that has 28 foldout panels with 4- or 5-point type face, virtually unreadable and useless. The only way I could get instructions was to (1) download the guide from JBL;’s website, (2) enlarge the pdf document by 400%, and (3) print relevant (English) pages. Even the few graphics (see photo) are nearly indecipherable.
The unit is warranted for one year (typical) but contains the notice that the earphones “may deteriorate from use or storage.”
In sum, these are good earphone that are overburdened by—and overwhelm the owner with—too many functions (e.g., “Ambient Awareness,” “TruNote Calibration”) and excessive complexity.

Great, in the Right Setting
on June 16, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
Several years ago I purchased and ultimately returned a robotic vacuum. We are dog owners and dogs shed, in our case they shed a lot. The vac I tried jammed easily on dog hair and had other failings. When I tried this new Samsung, I had low expectations which were quickly dashed. Here are some of the positives:
-brushes do not jam
-dog hair does not wind around brushes
-incredible power/suction
-easy to program
-moves easily between hard and carpeted floor surfaces
-relatively quiet
-programmable
-decent battery life (+/-) 90 mins.
-overall, very good cleaning, including most edges
My 4-star rating (rather than 5) is due to the inherit limitations of any robotic vac, including this very well engineered/designed Samsung. While it can be (relatively) easily programmed to run at certain times, having a small robot running around the house is distracting (but can be a fun game for some pets). The same job can be done much more quickly with a standard vac. In our home, the vac had to stop because the dustbin filled (dog hair) to capacity. (The dustbin is easy to see into [see photo] and also to empty.
Additionally, Samsung strongly recommends that the charging/base unit be flat against a wall. In our house, we have a variety of baseboards with quarter-round which made complying impossible [see photo]. When the vac returned to the base for charging, it was obvious why the manual encourages a flat wall, as the base moved and challenged the vac to park itself, which it ultimately did.
My final "con" is that "boundary markers" which keep the vac from tumbling down a flight of stairs on going into places where it should not go are an "option" and calls to Samsung Support and then too their parts/accessories supplier were not successful in finding out how to purchase these. In my opinion, they should be included.
I think this would be a great purchase for a small house or apartment, especially if it were programmed to run while the occupants were elsewhere. With its camera and sensors, it's a very impressive and helpful piece of technology.

Surprisingly Good Sound but with Minor Issues
on May 8, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
This speaker seems to have a specific purpose:Take it to the beach, or camping or on any outing. It's not intended to replace a home audio system, or other high-end speaker. Happily, it's lightweight and has a very thoughtful design. In addition to audio features (see below) it includes a watertight "dry box" that is just big enough to hold a couple of credit cards, some cash, and some keys.
Packaging is slick (in a good way) and very elegant. But documentation is a problem as explained below.
I did not test the claims that it could safely be submerged in a meter of water for up to 30 minutes, nor did I drop it to test its claimed durability. I did assess its construction which seemed to be excellent. Connections sit behind snug, waterproof caps. Ergonomics are very good as major controls are large and sit on top of the unit. Connecting via Bluetooth was nearly instantaneous and very easy.
Most notable is the sound quality which, for it's size and within its intended use, was very good. Obviously, bass and treble are limited by size, but to enjoy music on a beach on by a bonfire, it is better than good. Volume levels were surprisingly high before there was any notable distortion.
My only notable issues are with documentation. The box contains a folded color insert that shows where various controls and connection are located, and what the embossed symbols means. There is also a "Care and Maintenance Manual" in about a dozen languages, but it provides very little information other than the usual warnings and "do nots." There is a link to a full manual but when I tried it (using different browsers) there was no manual on line. Also, I could not find in the documentation or the illustration the claimed "built-in mic" that was featured on the packaging. I really did not feel this was a major problem, as I do not anticipate many users will be using the device as a speakerphone. The illustrated features sheet in the box shows that icons are in a contrasting color from the speaker, but that is not the case. They are clear and easy to ready with the major buttons on top, but less so in the end cap connections. However, this is a minor concern.
In sum, it you are looking for an (apparently) sturdy, waterproof, and lightweight speaker with very good sound, this unit might be just the right one for you.

Simplicity with Many Options
on April 16, 2017
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
I am one of those people who looks at what the packaging of a product says about the contents. In this case, the packaging is excellent but not wasteful. The two camera's can clearly be seen, and the ancillary items are well packed and organized.
When I opened the package and inventoried the contents I was surprised to find only a "quick start" guide rather than a full instruction manual. I needn't have worried. Following the simple steps in order made installation a snap and everything worked as it should the first time. No need to wonder about "what did I do wrong?" Very smooth and efficient.
The cameras attach magnetically to an ingenious semi-spherical wall mount that allows for infinite positioning of the cameras. I suggests opening the app on your phone or table as you plan your locations so you can get a preview of what you'll see when mounted. Also, if you use the provided wallboard anchors use a 3/16 bit, not 1/4. Take my word for it.
Software is generally very clear, but there is some ambiguity in the "Mode" option. I could not figure out how to turn off the motion "alerts" that came to my phone and computer every time someone "tripped" the camera. I tried Netgear's on-line chat and the problem was resolved within about 3 minutes and they helpfully sent me an immediate copy of the conversation for future reference.
I have not tried the night vision function adequately to comment on its effectiveness, but will update this review later when I do.
Overall, an excellent product with apparently good support. Next update to software should make it even better.

Great for Some, But Too Firm for Others
on November 23, 2016
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
These brush heads are the same as the original one provided with the Philips Sonicare Platinum I reviewed elsewhere. They are well designed and fit the handle easily, as would be expected. My only concern is that for some users, especially those with sensitive gums, the brushes likely are too firm. My dentists have always recommended using the softest brush I could buy. These heads are clearly (and appropriately) for maximum plaque removal: "Our deepest cleaning brush head." To achieve this, the design incorporates a variety of bristles. I like the feature where a portion of these lose color to indicate when it is time to replace the head. I'd caution users not to be too aggressive in going after plaque if in that quest they injure their gums.

Looks Better Than It Works
on November 22, 2016
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
When I received the Multigroom 7400 I was impressed by the appearance of the product. After using it, I am not nearly as enthused.
POSITIVES:
Lithium-ion battery with claimed 1-hour run time. Likely accurate, but I had no need to use it that long.
Claimed to be "shower proof." Again, likely accurate, but for my grooming purposes, dry hair is easier to trim and manage. I should note that I am a bit on the hairy side and also have a full beard that I trim a couple of times per week.
International power supply. Unlike some others that work only on U.S.power, with plug adapter this can be charged internationally.
Several attachments for various types of grooming. The plastic guides ("combs") seem well made as does the primary groomer metal blade.
A leather pouch for keeping everything together. Good for throwing everything in a draw or for travel.
Battery charging light is useful.
Two-year (plus 6 months if registered on-line) warranty, which is generous and 45-day satisfaction period during which it can be returned for a refund.
The "Turbo boost" is really just a second speed that can be turned on and off easily. I found that for most applications using it in the turbo mode provided the best cuts.
NOT SO ENTHUSED ABOUT
Ergonomics. When I saw the groomer in the box I thought the back side (black) was rubberized. It is not and the hash marks along the side do not enhance grip. It has an overall flimsy feel that speaks to its plastic construction. I found holding it in position was a bit of a challenge even with dry hands, and would not feel comfortable using it in a shower or wet environment.
The three "combs" have indicated indexes to set the length of cut. However, the indicators marks are nearly unreadable in normal light. If one needed glasses for reading, they would be impossible to see. I cannot speak to the accuracy of the indexes, only that they seem relatively useless. One comb has 18 settings, the others 12 and 10. (See photo.)
Multi-language instructions are printed in small font on light "newsprint" with countless folds and usual safety warnings dominate.
In sum, this product is OK, and worked well but not exceptionally for my beard and some other hair removal. Sadly, primarily for ergonomic reasons, It did not live up to my positive first impressions.
NOTE: This review is based on a product sent to me without cost for evaluation. I am solely responsible for the comments and was in no way encouraged or asked to change my evaluations.

Good, But Not Great
on September 29, 2016
Posted by: HonestJohn
This mighty be an ideal vac for a small apartment or a a quick cleanup of a large family room. Since it is not a full size upright, it has many limitations compared to one, and when the hand vac portion is separated it is heavy and fatiguing to use for more than a few minutes. It lacks the ease and lightweight of a good stick vac.
Positives:
Excellent packaging and information on box.
All necessary attachments are provided, including a terrific under-appliance wand.
Assembly is really a "snap" and components are of good quality.
LED lighting on the power head and hand vac.
Ingenious easy access to brush heads for cleaning.
Has a wall hanger for storage.
Comes with long power cord.
5-year limited warranty
Less Positive:
Unit is somewhat awkward to use.
Inconveniently will not stand up (despite pictures that show it in that position). It does have small rubber pads to help hold it when leaned against a wall, but they do not work well when on hard surfaces.
Dirt collection cup is small and will fill quickly, but is easy to empty.
In sum, it was designed to fill the gap between a large upright and small hand vac and it does so with the expected compromises.
Note: This review based on a unit provided me for the purpose of evaluation.

product looks good but "service" was misleading
By waterwalker from Michigan
Reviews on Best Buy online convinced me that an extended warranty was needed because several customers had machines stop working soon after one year. The salesman in the Best Buy store did not have the 70 pt dehumidifier on hand, so he told me to buy it online and bring in the paperwork to get the extended warranty. The website made it appear that I was buying the machine from Best Buy, but when I brought in my paperwork I was told that this was bought from a 3rd party and could not get an extended warranty! "Just like Amazon" the Geek said! I do not want the machine without the extended warranty, so I'm told to return it -- which means shipping cost and a restocking fee! Best Buy will do nothing to correct their mistake, or deliberate misinformation. I have wasted a lot of time, theirs and mine, going through phone trees. The 3rd party has been much more responsive, but Best Buy has been a complete stonewall. Neither the store manager nor 888-Best-Buy will correct their mistake. I will now seek an extended warranty from the Chinese manufacturer, since the 3rd party store does not provide it. I will correct my mistakes, and stop wasting time, by no longer buying from Best Buy.

No Audio???

Great picture quality even at night but there is no audio!!!
Never heard of a dash cam with no audio. They should let you know that up front. The Garmin software to view the video downloaded easily onto windows 7 and worked well. However who wants a cash cam with no audio sound? It goes back to Best Buy tomorrow, and the hunt for decent dash cam will continue.

Would this work for a 400 lb plus woman who has parkinsons and is immobile? This would be perfect for her. What is the size and can it be used just over the legs?

The fit would likely be tight, but possibly doable. The only way to find out is to try it. As per my review, it does cover only the lower portion of the body. Hope this helps.

Level up your cleaning game with the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging. Kill 99.99% of the most common surface bacteria on your phone in 5 minutes and keep your battery out of the red with just one device.* The UV-C bulbs keep germs, including the most common surface bacteria, at bay no matter your phone size or brand. Best of all, the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging kills bacteria on all the hardest to reach surfaces without heat, liquid, or chemicals that could damage your device. And it’s completely quiet. Bacteria isn’t safe on other items either. Toss your keys, remote control, or earbuds into the mophie UV sanitizer for a quick clean up. Clean phone but low on battery? Just place your Qi enabled smartphone on the wireless charging surface and charging begins on contact all while you’re sanitizing a second device.

Is wireless charging on the inside or on top of the lid? I'm hoping it's on the lid so I can charge and clean something else at the same time.

Charging is done on top of the device. The sanitizing compartment is separate and below.
