Good, But Can You Have Too Much Bass?
on April 19, 2024
Posted by: HonestJohn
I know headphones are meant to be heard, not seen, but for premium devices these make no statement at all. In solid gray (including the few buttons), they look totally generic. I wish there had been more visual impact to the design. Further, the packaging seemed excessive. Mine were delivered by a national delivery company and so there were 3 Sony-branded boxes, one inside the other. Seems wasteful and unnecessary.
As for the headphones themselves, it's mostly, but not exclusively, good news. They are quite comfortable with the expected adjustment band for different size heads. While there is no manual, per se, pairing the headphones to my Android phone was easy with little fuss. The downloaded app makes setup easy and quick. I listened to expansive orchestral music and some contemporary singers, solo instrumentals and other types of music. One prominent "feature" of these headphones is enhanced bass. It's true. Strong bass was evident in most sources, but especially in the classical symphonic music. Bass is adjustable by repeatedly pushing the "ULT" button, but I found it nearly overwhelming, even in the lowest setting. How much bass is desired is always a matter of personal preference, but I wish it had one "step" further down.
The noise cancelling featured work amazingly well. Compared to my decades-old Bose, the improvement is remarkable. For travelers, an airline cable is included as well as a charging cable.
The buttons for bass, noise, on/off are located on the left headset. Since the majority of us are right handed, I found the placement a bit awkward. In sum, these are perfectly adequate headsets for most people. I found little that makes them especially different other than the understated design and the ability to control bass (mostly) effectively.

Smart Technology and a Lot of Fun
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: HonestJohn
When the box containing the Snaptain E20 box arrived at our home, my wife, quite routinely, asked, “What’s in the box?” I said, “a small drone.” She looked at me in some amazement and then asked quietly, “what are you going to do with a drone?” stretching out the last word. There was a long, long pause on my part as I tried to find a reasonable answer. I finally said, “have fun” both as a weak statement and a question. It was a prophetic reply.
Opening the box, a buyer finds a nice protective zippered case. Opening this, the first thing to notice is the drone itself. It is folded into a compact size, so small I wondered, “How is this going to fly?” Removing the drone, reveals the equally folded remote control. The case also contains batteries, charging cable, strap for the case, blade protectors, replacement blades, and two printed documents, a Manual and Quick Start Guide. These documents were the worst part of the drone experience. Whoever thought a 4-point light gray font on glossy white paper was a good idea, needs to rethink it. While the printed documents were almost useless, the same information was easily downloaded.
I was struck by the versatility and ergonomics of the remote. Everything was well labeled, and for us beginners, a nice cardboard cheat sheets fits on top. While the remote is compact, the manufacturer has made it quite easy to use and comfortable in the hand. Additionally, there is a convenient mount for a connected phone to view images. (The manufacturer says to remove the phone case to avoid it slipping. I wish I had followed that advise initially.)
After charging the batteries and following the guidance on the video, I tried flying. To do so, the user only has to activate the drone by pressing a button for a few seconds, and the same for the remote. They paired easily. I followed instructions and the drone lifted elegantly and with a confidence that I lacked. In a few minutes I felt like a real pilot. The drone and remote worked effortlessly and I had no problem with elevation or orientation.
Because I am a bit clumsy, the video and photo elements worked well and with good imagery, but I will need more flight time to use these functions effectively. In sum, the response I gave my wife, “for fun” was dead-on. This little device was safe, easy to learn, and fun.

Good Camera, but Lacks Wanted Features
on October 22, 2023
Posted by: HonestJohn
The Thinkware F70Pro is a bit of a conundrum. On the positive side, the camera works well, and the daylight images are excellent. Thus, if a buyer only wants or needs is a basic dash camera with virtually no features, this should be fine. I found pairing my Android phone to the camera to be confusing as the manual is unclear about pairing via Bluetooth versus the labeled button “Wi-Fi.” The camera has one status light that changes color to advise of the condition.

Buyers need to know this is a small camera, about the length of my index finger, approximately 3.1” It lacks a screen, so the only way a user can determine what has been recorded is to use the phone app or remove the supplied MicroSD Card and view it in another device.
The Thinkware F70Pro comes from a company with a good history of producing reliable dash cams, a bonus. But that bonus comes with a hefty price compared to other basic dash cams.
The F70Pro seems to be begging the owner to buy ever more “accessories.” Want to be able to move the camera to another vehicle with a suction mount rather than the provided unremovable/permanent adhesive? It’s extra. Want to have parking protection? That requires the hard-wire kit that costs extra. GPS? Sure, if you want to buy the accessory that provides that feature.
The box contains the camera, adhesive pads, the permanent windshield mount, the plug-in power cable, an installed MicroSD card, adhesive wire clips, and a nice tool for concealing wire. There are no printed instructions or quick-start guide, just QR codes that quickly load these. The manual is clear, if a little overwhelming with lawyer-required warnings: I didn’t know I could be “electrocuted” by the 12V outlet.
In sum, as a basic camera that lacks a lot of what makes a dash cam convenient to use, the Thinkware F70Pro is fine. It works as a camera, but not as a good value.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent Product w/ Minor Customer Service Issue
on September 12, 2023

Review of Rexing
The Rexing J1772 EV Extension Cable is an excellent product. It makes several claims and seems to achieve or exceed all of them. A question would be, however, is this something I need? In my case as the owner of a plug-in hybrid, the answer is a resounding yes. Non-Tesla public chargers are notoriously unreliable and often difficult to access. Should a pile of snow or an EV parked askew block access to the charger, the additional 17’ of cable would make charging much easier and accessible.
Features I really liked include its weight. At only 5.2 pounds, it is easy to just throw it in the vehicle in its nice canvas-like zippered case. Also, the cable is a bit lighter than the one from my home charger, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem. The connectors are covered with weather-resistant closures that snap open with a reassuring sturdiness. Connecting to the vehicle and to another cable was smooth and precise. One gets the sense this was engineered for durability, even in inclement weather (rathe for use -41 to + 131 degrees F.) or other difficult situations. Indeed, a close examination shows no sign of cost-cutting or skimping on materials.
Strangely, while it is rated by the manufacturer for more than 10,000 uses, it carries an only an 18-month warranty. Somewhat concerningly, when I tried to register the device at the site indicated in the enclosed documents, there was an error message that the site did not exist. It took 3 calls to customer service during their stated business hours before I was able to speak to an agent (messages were not returned). He explained that to register I needed to ignore the provided information and go to the company’s main website. This worked well.
One note of caution: The Rexing is for use only with Level 1 and 2 chargers, and is not rated for DC Fast Chargers.
Overall, this is a great product to toss in the car for “just in case” events or when you have to park your vehicle outside the garage and your home charger cable won’t reach. I am impressed and pleased to have this cable in my vehicle.

Excellent and Convenient
on September 11, 2023

While many electric toothbrushes offer a range of settings, timers, and other features, this brush does not. Instead it is simple, functional, and easy to use if what you desire is a modern way to cleanse your teeth and gums. It's overall simplicity is its main benefit. The user does not need to try to decide on what settings to us; just attach the brush, put on the toothpaste, and turn it on. The charger works well and is small and tidy, taking up very little space on the countertop. (This unit does not provide for wall mounting, but with its small size, this should not be an issue.)
Charging speed is fast and a single charge lasts for about a week if used twice a day. It comes with a nice travel case that also conveniently holds two brush heads, making it ideal for travel. It's easy to maintain oral hygiene while traveling, especially since the case takes up so little space in one's luggage.
Overall, I rate this quite highly. It may not be as flashy as higher-priced, multi-featured brushes, but if efficiency and simplicity are what you need, this is an excellent product.

Works Well with Minor Caveats
on May 24, 2023

The Helios Power Outlet Relocating Kit solves an aesthetic problem and it works. Usually, running in-wall wiring for a television or other device require an electrician or a knowledgeable DIYer who is comfortable running Romex and other cables through a wall cavity. The Helios Kit bypasses many of the concerns associated with DIY wiring, and has been well thought out.
It’s complete and includes necessary hand tools for cutting into drywall and fishing wires or cables through the wall. The T-handled saw can also be used with a power drill, a convenience. To avoid using Romex or other direct wiring, the system is based on using two extension cords; one from an existing outlet placed laterally to the bottom wall housing, another from the upper to lower opening in the wall. Cutting the opening with the hand saw is doable, but not a lot of fun. With a power drill, it is effortless.
As mentioned, this is marketed as a DIY installation and, for folks with a bit of experience, this is fine. I used two additional tools, obviously not provided: an 8’ level and a stud finder. Are these essential? Not for most installations, but a smart Do-It-Yourselfer would certainly want to know what’s in the wall before drilling into it. A stud finder helps and the level insures a neat installation. An exterior wall will likely have insulation which can significantly impeded installing the vertical cord, even with the fish tape. Interior walls could have other electrical, plumbing, or other potential problems not visible from the outside of the wall. If the installation was being attempted in an older home which used plaster and lather, installation would not be possible, and obviously the same if there were horizontal structure in the wall cavity.
In sum:
Well thought through.
Will work for most installations.
Takes a tad more than basic DIY skills.

Great in Most Ways, but Poor Battery Life
on September 4, 2022
Posted by: HonestJohn
If features, connectivity, and (perhaps) looks were all that were required to make a superior watch and tracker, this would win most any competition. Let’s start with the last. The version of the watch that I tested had a 44mm face which when not in use was reflective piano black, matched with a matte black band. For those who are into a modern, minimalist look, this is a beauty. The watch has only 2 small right-side buttons, as most functions are controlled by sweeping the face in various directions such as up for apps. Slick. The watch arrives in an equally simple and fully recyclable box.
Setup was relatively easy as was pairing with a Samsung Galaxy S21 phone. Once the pairing process starts it is virtually automatic as the user has only to answer a few questions about preferences. As for connectivity, the watch has LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi features along with GPS. All connected easily. When I took a long walk, the watch surprised me with a chime and question: Did I want it to memorize my route. Not sure what other Easter Eggs it has in store for me, but I liked the surprise.
For anyone familiar with recent Samsung devices, the icons and interface will feel comfortably familiar. (As I own several Samsung devices, I applaud the standardization of icons and features.) Dozens of organized (athletic, stylish, digital/analog) faces are available which are chosen through the phone app. Experimenting and customizing faces are quick and easy.
When the watch is illuminated (by wrist movement, screen touch, or button) the display is vibrant and bright. With this larger face, the look is dazzling and impressive. The face responds nearly instantly to swipes or touch. Again, very impressive.
However, all is not perfect. The provided watch band has no loops, so after fitting it to one’s wrist, the remaining “tail” has to be inserted under the main band. While this sounds like a minor issue (and with all of the above, I guess it is) I found this requirement awkward and inconvenient; see photo. Anyone with dexterity limitations (arthritic fingers?) will find this frustrating.
The big and most negative issue is battery life. The large display and multiple connectivity options really take their toll. I wore the watch to sleep and put it in “bed mode” which seems to be a variation of airplane mode. I had 72% battery when I did this. When I awakened 7.5 hours later, I had lost literally 30% of battery life. While charging is easy (requires a Type C USB connect for the magnetic charger), I cannot imagine the battery lasting much more than 24 hours, especially with athletic activity.
In sum, if you can be comfortable with the limited battery life and minor band issue, this could be the smart watch for you. I loved it, but was truly disappointed by the brief battery life.

First Rate and Highly Recommended

I will admit to being a bit of a snob when it comes to choosing appliance. I tend to buy long-established brands, even if the only connection to the brand’s heritage is its name. Until a couple of years ago when I tested an impressive Shark stick vacuum, I was not familiar with the brand which I saw as an appliance upstart. And then I tested the Shark Stratos which changed my perception completely. Here’s why.
The packaging is composed of plastic protectors and cardboard, both easily recyclable. That matters to me. Assembly was absurdly easy and was literally a snap. Each piece connected solidly and convincingly, taking about 5 minutes from box opening to operating vacuum. (One item I found perplexing was the included Odor Neutralizer Cartridge which sits inside the floor nozzle. The benefits of this might be apparent in a room with odor issues, but as I have none, I could not detect any benefit.)
Operating this vacuum showed its ingenuity and effectiveness. Used as an upright, the few controls are literally at one’s finger tips. In addition to the off/on switch there is a “Surface Selector” allowing the operator to choose a setting for thick carpets to hardwood floors. With each change, the vacuum adjusted quickly. In sum, upright cleaning was excellent as a result of variable settings, dual self-cleaning rollers, and a very strong suction.
Of course, the unit has other beneficial capabilities. The suction unit and canister can be removed easily and function as a hand-held cleaner. Since the motor is the same, the suction remains strong. The variety of included tools gives the user several options for different cleaning challenges. All tools are interchangeable whether using in the upright, above-floor, or “Lift-Away” mode.
In sum, I am still a snob, but consider this Shark to be among the very best vacuums within a premium brand. I think any buyer will be happy with the Shark Stratos' durability and functionality.

Excellent Comination of Functions
on January 2, 2022
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
When a manufacturer or product designer tries to make a single device “multifunctional” a flashing yellow light goes off in my head and I wonder: what compromises had to be made in the quality of materials or functionality? Was this decision made to make the functions more easily accessible to the user, or was this a marketing ploy with cost-cutting as the goals.
It was with these concerns that I unpacked the Waterpik SF-03 combination electric brush and oral irrigator (water floss). First impression: a lot of thought went into the design. It’s compact, but no so much that the controls are not easy to see and use. It’s attractive with a nice modern, clean look.
I was delighted by the clear, easily readable instruction, but for the most part they were unneeded as the setup was easy and quick. The only “delay” was the recommend 4-hour charge for the brush’s lithium battery.
As for my concern about compromised functionality, I had no need to fear! The brush has 2 speeds, easily switchable from a designated button on the handle. The head is comfortable to use and easy to remove or replace. The brush handle can be used independently of the flossing base and can either be attached or not to the reservoir “hose.” (Again, as with the other functions, attaching the hose to the brush is literally a snap and there is a discreet button that instantly releases it.)
There are 3 buttons on the brush handle: the aforementioned speed control, “Brush,” and “Floss.” The user does not need to look at the handle to make choices as each button has a distinct location and texture.
As noted, brushing is comfortable and easy. The user has the option of flossing while brushing or following. The floss pressure control located on the side of the base, like the rest of this unit, is clear and easy to use. (I found it better to use the floss function after brushing as the water washed away the toothpaste quickly.)
The manufacturer has provided a travel case for the brush handle and 2 brush heads. My only negative is that it is significantly larger than similar ones from other brands, and might challenge those who travel only with a carry-on bag. (See photo: the Waterpik is on the right.) That’s about the only nit I can pick.
In sum, an excellent product that does what it promises.

It's OK, but Just OK
on November 18, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
For a product that is intended to calm and warm its user, this one generally fails to meet expectations.
The first issue is getting oneself into it. The long zipper creates an adequate opening, but the touted “Sherpa Lining” creates so much friction with any other fabric that it seems one must be mostly undressed or wearing slick clothing (such as outdoor base layers) to get one’s feet to the bottom. Once in, however, it is reasonably comfortable.
Second, despite what a user might anticipate, the Calming Cozy covers only the lower half of one’s body. Obviously it depends on the user’s height, but for this 5’ 8” user, the cozy ends just above the waistline, leaving the upper torso and shoulders to fend for themselves against the cold.
On the positive side, the 3 heat settings cover a modest but comfortable range and, for safety, turn themselves off after 2 hours of use such as when a user falls asleep. Nice touch. The vibration function also has 3 settings, and while a user can sense and hear the difference, the vibration is only to the bottom of the feet. This function also has an automatic shutoff of 15 minutes.
The power cord is a good length and the controller fits comfortably in the hand and is both clear and easy to understand/use.
In sum, a fair product that has the ability to offer some heat and comfort, but with notable limitations.

product looks good but "service" was misleading
By waterwalker from Michigan
Reviews on Best Buy online convinced me that an extended warranty was needed because several customers had machines stop working soon after one year. The salesman in the Best Buy store did not have the 70 pt dehumidifier on hand, so he told me to buy it online and bring in the paperwork to get the extended warranty. The website made it appear that I was buying the machine from Best Buy, but when I brought in my paperwork I was told that this was bought from a 3rd party and could not get an extended warranty! "Just like Amazon" the Geek said! I do not want the machine without the extended warranty, so I'm told to return it -- which means shipping cost and a restocking fee! Best Buy will do nothing to correct their mistake, or deliberate misinformation. I have wasted a lot of time, theirs and mine, going through phone trees. The 3rd party has been much more responsive, but Best Buy has been a complete stonewall. Neither the store manager nor 888-Best-Buy will correct their mistake. I will now seek an extended warranty from the Chinese manufacturer, since the 3rd party store does not provide it. I will correct my mistakes, and stop wasting time, by no longer buying from Best Buy.

No Audio???

Great picture quality even at night but there is no audio!!!
Never heard of a dash cam with no audio. They should let you know that up front. The Garmin software to view the video downloaded easily onto windows 7 and worked well. However who wants a cash cam with no audio sound? It goes back to Best Buy tomorrow, and the hunt for decent dash cam will continue.

Would this work for a 400 lb plus woman who has parkinsons and is immobile? This would be perfect for her. What is the size and can it be used just over the legs?

The fit would likely be tight, but possibly doable. The only way to find out is to try it. As per my review, it does cover only the lower portion of the body. Hope this helps.

Level up your cleaning game with the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging. Kill 99.99% of the most common surface bacteria on your phone in 5 minutes and keep your battery out of the red with just one device.* The UV-C bulbs keep germs, including the most common surface bacteria, at bay no matter your phone size or brand. Best of all, the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging kills bacteria on all the hardest to reach surfaces without heat, liquid, or chemicals that could damage your device. And it’s completely quiet. Bacteria isn’t safe on other items either. Toss your keys, remote control, or earbuds into the mophie UV sanitizer for a quick clean up. Clean phone but low on battery? Just place your Qi enabled smartphone on the wireless charging surface and charging begins on contact all while you’re sanitizing a second device.

Is wireless charging on the inside or on top of the lid? I'm hoping it's on the lid so I can charge and clean something else at the same time.

Charging is done on top of the device. The sanitizing compartment is separate and below.
