Functions Well, But Lacks Key User Information
on September 27, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
This is a difficult product to evaluate, so I’ll keep my comments simple at first, and then expand:
The product arrives in a medium all-cardboard box with a smaller box inside. With the exception of some necessary foam to protect the electronic controller (“The Cube”), the packaging is fully recyclable, which is great.
The pad arrives in a cinched bag and The Cube the smaller box. Unpacking is a snap. Once installed, the product does work as described (and then some). But there were issues:
Installation was a challenge that others are not likely to face. To stabilize the pad there are 2 stretch strap that run parallel to the side of the bed and are intended to be place under the mattress. I ran into a problem, not of the product’s making, but related to my bed. I have an older model SleepNumber with an adjustable base that allows the heads to operate independently, and the foot as one unit. Due to SleepNumber’s strange design, the mattress is screwed to the frame from above, requiring basically a full disassembly of the bed to get under the mattress. I instead chose to run the straps and the tubing under the mattress pad.
Filling The Cube, per instructions, was easy as was starting the flow.
It would have been wonderful and much neater installation had the manufacturer provide about 3’ more of the dual hose. As you can see in the picture, in order to connect the tubing to The Cube requires it exits the bedding awkwardly and unattractively. With additional length, it could have exited from the top of the king (not California) and be hidden before attaching to The Cube.
Surprises abound. First, despite there being no mention in the description or in the minimalist (and incomplete) Instruction Manual, the unit both heats and cools. After contacting the manufacturer, I learned the product is adjustable from 55 – 115 degrees F. This was especially confusing since the pad arrived with large stickers identifying the upper as the “Comfy Side” and the bottom as the “Cooler Side.”
Second, the very brief Instruction Manual, such as it is, lacked basic but essential information such as how to synch the remote to The Cube. The company provided a web link with instructions, but shouldn’t such information be included?
Sleeping is pleasant. It takes the unit about 30 minutes to reach the designated temperature, and the user needs to be accurate. If you set the temp too high (as I first did) it also takes about a half-hour for the temperature to adjust.
The pad is filled with tubing for the hot or cold water to circulate. Most users will feel these why lying atop them. However, I quickly found I was undisturbed by the sensation and felt adjusted to the sensation after 2 nights. Others of course, may not be so adaptable.
The bedside Cube has both pumping and heating/cooling equipment in it and does make noise, gentle and “white noise” usually. I found, however, that during the night the steady thrum of the equipment changed to an inconsistent, random noise. The volume did not change, but the stop/start was annoying and awakened me. This may be unique to my sample, but be aware of the possibility.
In sum, I’d recommend it—not enthusiastically, but still positively—to those who wish to try a night’s sleep with control, over the bed temperature. The range of 55 – 115 degrees F gives the user a lot of options, but the optimal setting will take some trial and error.
My biggest concern is the lack of meaningful/helpful documentation that really is necessary for several functions.

Don’t ever worry about leaks or floods in your basement, under your sinks, from your water heater and anywhere else around the house. Phyn Smart Water Sensors alert you audibly, visually and with SMS and app notifications to your phone the moment they detect water. Set your own alert thresholds for potentially damaging high and low humidity in the free Phyn app and customize settings to maximize battery life. Easily connects via Wi-Fi to your home network, no hubs necessary. Batteries included.

Challenging App and Limited Usefulness
on June 27, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
The Phyn (2-Pack) Water Sensors are intriguing products with limited usefulness by themselves. They are packaged neatly and with minimal materials, yet it’s inviting. The 2 sensors are stacked atop each other but on different “shelves.” The requisite batteries are similarly given their own shelf. Besides the batteries, there are no other enclosures except for a too-brief foldout guide.
The sensors themselves are a matte black about 3.5” diameter and 1” height. They “sit” on three small brass pegs (see picture) that are the contacts for water detection. The sensors connect to a phone or tablet via Wi-Fi, more about which later. Additionally, and likely more usefully, the sensors can be connected to several other products by this company, including a whole-house water shutoff in case of a detected leak.
Getting started was a challenge. The instructions tell the user to insert the batteries, and it can take a little detective work to figure out how. Eventually one discovers a very small dark-gray dot on the black underside (see circle in picture). Twisting the cover to the left a few degrees opens the battery case.
In order to use the sensors, naturally one must download an app which installed quickly and easily from the Play Store. It’s clean and functional in appearance, if not in use. Going through the app setup—connecting the sensors to it—was tedious and at times frustrating. The app automatically opens a QR reader which is supposed to expedite setup. The gray (again) QR was not detectible by the app under a variety of lighting scenarios. The developers must have understood this problem as the app gives the user the option to skip the step and manually enter the information. Again, the app seemed flawed as it put me in a loop (during several tries on both sensors) to enter the registration code number imprinted (again in dark gray) below the useless QR symbol. Again, developers must know of this as there is an escape: “skip this step.”
Once the app is linked to the devices and the Wi-Fi network—again a tedious, repetitious process—the sensors work. The user has the option to established preferred notification thresholds (both high and low) for temperature and humidity. The app’s display of this information is clear and somewhat interesting. It could be a real benefit, for example, if the user were not at home for a sustained period and the temperature dropped sufficiently to freeze pipes.
As for water detection, the primary function, the devices respond nearly instantaneously. When water is detected the sensors dimly flash red, beep, and send a text to the phone. Response was excellent, but I could not detect the claimed 90 db aural notification. The beeping sounded puny and did not, as I expected, get louder over time. The text message was clear as to location.
Overall, nicely packaged and manufactured, but with plenty of annoyances and limited utility. The text messages are helpful and could facilitate a quick user response. However, were the phone not connected to Wi-Fi or data, in airplane mode, or off the warning would go unnoticed. In sum, I felt these were meant to be part of a larger system, especially the whole-home shutoff device. As stand-alones, they are mediocre.

Deep. Loud. And immersive, too. The SoundLink Revolve II Bluetooth speaker delivers true 360° sound for consistent, uniform coverage. Place it in the center of the room to give everyone the same experience. Or set it near a wall and sound will radiate and reflect around the room, immersing you in that same feeling you felt at your favorite show. The tapered cylindrical shape makes this wireless speaker easy to grab and go, while a durable aluminum body provides worry-free protection. And it’s water resistant so you can keep the party going, even if it starts to rain. The rechargeable, lithium-ion battery plays up to 13 hours — for full-day listening. Voice prompts talk you through Bluetooth pairing, and there’s a built-in speakerphone for calls. Use the Bose Connect app to pair two SoundLink speakers for Stereo or Party Mode. The app also helps you manage your devices, unlock features, and access future updates. Available in Triple Black or Luxe Silver.

Small but Very Good Sound
on March 28, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
As has been my long experience with Bose products, this small but powerful speaker is a high-quality product that puts out sound that exceeds expectations based on its size.
Clearly the Soundlink Revolve II is a well-engineered speaker with a few thoughtful features. Connectivity to the Bose app was virtually instantaneous and was confirmed by a voice prompt from the speaker. When connected, it automatically updated speaker software. There is a multi-use button that allows you to select your language and when this is done, there is also a voice confirmation.
I cannot say this is a pretty speaker (the “squished cylinder” look is not a favorite) but at only 6” tall it can be easily hidden, but audibly delightfully present. It feels very solid and durable. The simplicity I experienced in connectivity is also evident with the minimal controls which consist of 6 buttons on top: On/Off, Volume Up, Volume Down, Bluetooth, Multifunction, and Share which permits the speaker to connect wirelessly to others. Once connected to a phone via Bluetooth, calls can be answered or placed through it.
On the bottom, there is a circular rubber ring that holds the speaker solidly in place. And although not mentioned in the minimalist literature provided, there is a female thread that fits a tripod (and other stands, I assume) as well as four small “dots” which look like they are intended to fit and connect the Soundlink Revolve II to a product-specific stand. Again, I am speculating as there is no mention of these by Bose.
OK, let’s get to the essence: The sound is very good. If this were not a Bose product, I’d say “surprisingly” but this is the kind of engineering for which the company is known. Even at high volume, the sound was not noticeably distorted and can fill a modestly-sized room. This product’s foci are portability, ease of use, and decent sound. It achieves all three with simplicity and high quality.

A Great Cleaner with One Ergonomic Issue
on March 23, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
This may be a bit long, so I’ll start with my conclusions while encouraging you to read the details and explanations that follow.
This Outsize Cordless Vac is a terrific piece of engineering and manufacturing. It’s powerful, intelligent, and does what it promises and then some. It comes with a full array of useful tool and 2 long-lasting batteries. With a battery swap, Dyson claims 1 hour of vacuuming time, but I found that with a mixture of carpeted and solid surface floors the vac easily exceeds this. Cleaning is excellent and emptying the collection bin is a snap. The vivid LCD screen on the rear of the grip keeps the user well informed about power and battery life. Clearly, well thought through and manufactured to high standards.
However, there is one significant issue that should be considered by a potential buyer: It is fatiguing to use this vac. In normal floor-cleaning configuration (power head, tube, handle and battery) it weighs about 9 pounds. Because it has no toggle-type on/off switch, activation requires holding the trigger. I found that wrapping a hand around the substantial grip and continuously holding the trigger was uncomfortable and tiring. For those with large, strong hands this might not be an issue, but I would urge buyers to try the grip and trigger as soon as they get home with the vac, and think about how it might feel 30 minutes later.
More Details:
Dyson uses only totally recyclable cardboard for packaging; there’s not a bit of Styrofoam to be found. This means there is little environmental impact. Bravo, Dyson.
If you are familiar with Dyson’s V11 or just about any recent Dyson cordless vac, the Outsize will seem familiar. Think of it as a V11 on steroids. See photos of larger Outside next to the V11. Dyson claims the Oversize Cordless is “full size,” implying it could replace a corded vac. I agree.
As with the earlier V11, the larger motorized head is really “smart” for all types of floors as it senses resistance (such as on thicker carpet) and adjusts the power accordingly. Once back on a solid flooring, power is reduced to save battery life while still cleaning brilliantly. The response to changing surfaces is almost immediate. I found it cleaned very well on all surfaces.
Having 2 batteries, each with its own charger (but not a 2nd charger stand), relieves the user of worrying about the power supply, and the crisp, colorful LCD panel on rear of the powerhead is always visible and, as noted, keeps the user informed of status. As with earlier models, the Oversize Cordless has settings for Eco (max battery time), Normal (auto-adjusting as described), and Boost which vastly increases suction but depletes the batteries much faster. Due to the machine’s inherent efficiencies in Normal setting, I found little use for Boost.
Each of the many provided tools works well, and I was especially pleased by the new Pet Hair tool for upholstery. I only wish it were available in a larger size, as the large cleaning head does tend to hold and wrap dog hair. (However, the rotating brush removes easily for cleaning.)
Is it the perfect home-cleaning tool? Well, having the extra battery and charger is great, but there is no holder for it. Obviously, when the vac is in use, the secondary battery can sit in the wall-mounted holder. My early version lacked comprehensive written information, and that which is provided was scattered among various documents. None of these minor issues would keep me from buying and recommending this excellent product, provided the user has sufficient hand strength.

Many Features and Effective
on January 13, 2021
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
As I usually do in my reviews, I’ll comment on the environmental effects of the packaging. Except for some small foam-like inserts to protect what is both an appliance and instrument, the balance of the packaging is recyclable cardboard. The manufacturer comments on its commitment to environmental sensitivity in the manual, and it is evident.
The company make several different series of air purifiers, and this Classic 408i is intended to be used in space of about 400 sq. ft. Thus the air in a room as large as 20 x 20 feet should be easily cleansed. In this same series there are more basic models, but this one has a number of automated and enhanced features which will be discussed shortly.
With dimensions of 23 x 20 x11 inches, it is small, but not unobtrusive. The modern Swedish design however helps it blend in to most room decors. The Classic 408i is portable in that it weighs 33 lbs. It does not, however, have wheels but does have comfortable handles.
Most of the initial set-up is a snap requiring only that the rear hinged panel be opened for access to the filter which needs to be unwrapped from its plastic protection. The ease of this process indicates that future filter changes will be simple and quick. After plugging in the unit and tapping the comfortably sensitive fan-speed button, the unit is working.
One aspect of the set that is not as easy is installing and using the Blueair Friend Mobile App. Connecting the purifier to the wi-fi was a slow and often-frustrating chore. Since it only works on the 2.4 GHz band it was necessary to temporarily “sleep” the 5.0 GHz bandwidth on my mesh system. Linking everything was far from plug-and-play and seemed outdated. The app does allow remote control of some functions and also contains information about possible pollutants. Whether a remote function is even necessary for this type of appliance is a question that users will have to decide for themselves.
The control panel is generally intuitive, but initially there is the likelihood of confusion as the rings that surround each change color to indicate status and the inner symbol may have a different color to indicate. For the first few weeks, keep the helpful and clear manual nearby.
Electrical consumption is minimal: After 24 hours on medium speed my plug-in usage meter showed less than 1 Kw.
On the control panel, nicely hidden by a cover, the soft-touch buttons are, from left to right, Wi-Fi set-up and status indicator, fan speed selector/indicator, filter status, auto speed operation on/off, a VOC indicator, and a PM 2.5 indicator for the presence of extremely small particulate matter.
Noise levels vary significantly. At the lowest speed, the sound is virtually imperceptible; the middle setting generates modest noise comparable to white noise and certainly not obtrusive. At the highest speed setting (which the manufacturer rates at 52dB(A)) the noise is disruptively loud anywhere near the purifier. These are, of course, subjective interpretations and others will react differently.
How effective is the 408i? It is hard to say. During and after cooking a smoky meal the 408i (on high speed) seemed to clear the air of cooking odors quickly. That was easy to determine. After many days of use, I cannot meaningfully evaluate its performance in other areas with one exception. Immediately after having some new carpeting installed, the VOC indicator turned orange (from green) and an hour or so later it had returned to green. Apparently, the sensors worked as advertised and the cleansing started and ended automatically. Well done, BlueAir!
Overall, a good, solid appliance that seems to offer many valuable features.

Great Product, But Use Website Instructions
on August 24, 2020
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
Let’s start with the many positives.
From the designation as “Sport Headphones” one would infer that this is a durable, comfortable but secure, and easy to use product. Just pop them in, turn on, and start your run or other activity.
While I cannot predict reliability or durability there is a solid feel to the components and they seem well constructed. Can they be both comfortable and secure when in active use, a conflict for many in-ear products? Yes. Included in the package are a wide range of inserts and ear hooks. In my case, the ones pre-fitted at the factory fit perfectly and comfortably. After a couple of minutes, they just felt like they belonged on my head and soon I barely noticed them. With the many options, most people should have no problem finding a good fit.
Issues? A few.
The charging process (which ultimately provides a several hours of listening) requires 2 steps. First, one must charge the case for ~3 hours. Then one inserts the earphones into the case for about 2 hours. The case retains its charged power sufficiently so that the earphones can be recharged a few times.
The sound quality listening to MP3 files from my Galaxy S8+ was mediocre. Obviously tuned for the mid-tones, bass and treble were weak. But these are not designed for listening in a living room to a high-quality audio source; they are meant to help an active person enjoy music, accept a phone call, etc. I did not expect—and did not hear—studio quality music. Phone calls were easy to understand.
In order to make these small enough for their intended purposes, there were compromises in the interface, and most commands (answer phone, mute, pause, fast-forward, volume, etc.) are controlled by invisible buttons on each unit; the same action on one is related to, but different from, the other. For example, tap 2X on the left to mute. Do the same on the right to increase volume. Not sure the average user will memorize the complexities.
My final concern is the instruction sheet that comes with the packaging. It is dominated by barely decipherable pictograms (see photo) and very small text. There are no written instructions, so one must try to use the illustrations. I found this daunting until I got an inspiration and went online. JVC has a wonderful website that has clear, step-by-step guidance in English and with clear illustrations. I could find no reference to the website on the printed instructions, a disappointing omission.
In sum, an excellent purpose-built product with some minor inconveniences.

Level up your cleaning game with the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging. Kill 99.99% of the most common surface bacteria on your phone in 5 minutes and keep your battery out of the red with just one device.* The UV-C bulbs keep germs, including the most common surface bacteria, at bay no matter your phone size or brand. Best of all, the mophie UV sanitizer with wireless charging kills bacteria on all the hardest to reach surfaces without heat, liquid, or chemicals that could damage your device. And it’s completely quiet. Bacteria isn’t safe on other items either. Toss your keys, remote control, or earbuds into the mophie UV sanitizer for a quick clean up. Clean phone but low on battery? Just place your Qi enabled smartphone on the wireless charging surface and charging begins on contact all while you’re sanitizing a second device.

Great Charger and, Perhaps, Sanitizer
on August 20, 2020
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
This is a difficult product to fully evaluate fairly, as I can actually document only one of its two primary functions. As it is advertised, the device can both sanitize a phone (and other objects that will fit into its generous sanitizing compartment) and wirelessly charge a phone equipped for wireless.
The latter function is excellent. If one follows the limited instructions, the phone is simply placed on top of the device (NOT in the sanitizing compartment) and within a second or two, there will be a beep indicating that high-speed charging has started. My phone has a rather bulky case, yet the charger connected to the phone virtually instantly. With other wireless chargers I have used, the bulky case has impeded a rapid (or any) connection.
As for the sanitizing claim, I note three matters: First, I have no way of evaluating whether it did in fact “sanitize” my phone. I am not saying it didn’t, but I can’t be certain. Second, the box notes in small print that it sanitizes only bacteria. There is no mention of viruses, Covid-19 or otherwise. There is also a third-party tester quote that “… it does not directly protect the user from exposure to bacteria or provide additional health benefits.”
Third, there are no visual indications as to when the sanitizing function is in use. When plugged in, there is a lighted button that comes and stays on. To sanitize, one places the object in the compartment then pushes the button once to get a single beep response. The light does not change so the beep is the only indication that the process has started. In about 5 minutes the product beeps 3 times which I assume means the process is completed. Again, there are no visual or other indicators of the cycle’s status.
Finally, as is now so common for products marketed in dozens of countries, the instructions are sparse and printed in many languages in very small typeface. Not an issue for me, but could be for others. The only actual instructions are, “…refer to the illustrations in this quick-start guide.” Fortunately, since the processes are not complex, neither are the illustrations.
Overall, an excellent charger that may offer other benefits.

Not a Gimmic: Works Great
on June 23, 2020

When I first tested this machine I thought the "wand" was a bit of feature overload. Why would I need a wand with its own solution, different from the main cleaning unit? I was wrong to doubt it. The wand feature is an excellent enhancement and the Oxy Spot Chaser Wand Refill works just as advertised. It's very effective on spots and areas that need a little extra attention. My dog drools and I tried the wand on some areas where his drool had marked a couple of area rugs. They came out perfectly as did another (unknown) stain. Overall, very impressive product.

Works Well

This solution (pun intended) works very well for general cleaning and for pet-specific problems. Happily, it does not rely on overwhelming fragrances to tell the user, "smell how well I am working!" Instead it just cleans carpets and rugs well for a home-based system. In use with a Hoover steamer, it was efficient and consumed much less than anticipated. For convenience, the cap comes with a neat little poring lip. Very thoughtful. Overall, this product exceeds expectations.

Quite Impressive & Easy to Use
on April 8, 2020
Posted by: HonestJohn
from Eau Claire, WI
PACKAGING: The cleaner is packaged well, but it is a shame Hoover must use a lot of Styrofoam for interior cushioning. I note this only because Styrofoam is not recyclable in my area. However, I am aware that manufacturers cannot yet find an equally efficient product to replace it, and until they do, it seems to be the “cushion” of choice if we consumers want our products delivered intact.
ASSEMBLY: The equipment is easy to assemble and snaps together well in about 5 minutes. The 3-language user manual is large enough to read and understand. One annoying flaw is that the “Getting to Know Your, etc.” page There is an identification graphic on which key parts are numbered. However, the accompanying list is unnumbered so there is no way to link the illustration to its parts list. Strange and unhelpful.
ACCESSORIES: The carpet cleaner comes with just about everything one might need, different tanks, accessory hose, “antimicrobial pet tool,” mesh storage bag, and sample cleaning solutions, etc. Optional accessories include crevice, upholstery, and stair tools which must be purchased separately.
QUALITY: The dominant material is, of course, plastic. However, it seems sturdy and the parts that snap together do so with a solid sound and notable click. Overall, it has a solid, comforting feel. Key function parts are labeled, and there is even a small screen that changes from WASH to DRY automatically. Disassembly for cleaning is straightforward and easy. While I cannot speak to the cleaner’s longevity, based on what I have observed, it’s well-made.
CLEANING: Cleaning carpets is why one would by this. Instructions for doing so are clear and easy to follow. I have a golden retriever who, while not accident prone, is messy. He like to chew on ice (allowed) and other things (usually not) on his favorite carpet. This was my first test challenge. I followed the instructions and vacuumed the carpet thoroughly. Then I turned on the cleaner. It automatically goes into CLEAN mode when pushed forward and into DRY mode when pulled back. After a few swipes the carpet was notably clean. Very impressive.
It comes with a “Spot Chaser” that also serves as the push handle for the main unit. I initially thought it was a gimmick. However, when I noticed a couple of spots that had not cleaned as well as the rest, a couple of squirts (with a specific spot treatment, included) and another swipe and they were gone. Both included samples of cleaner and spot pre-treat work well.
There is a strong orientation towards pet-related cleanup in the packaging and manual. I did not try the antimicrobial accessory, but could not see any reason it would not work well on pet stains. If I were to again raise a puppy, I would not want to be without this cleaner. As I did not have any of the optional accessories, I did not try to use the accessory hose other than to see how it connected. Again, easy and effortless.
MISC.: I have used several other carpet cleaners and based on those experiences I was expecting a lot of noise. Not so. The sound was on par with a vacuum. Again, impressive. Cleanup was a snap, quite literally. The parts come off easily with well-marked handles or releases. It took about the same time to clean everything on the machine as it did to assemble it.
In sum, I was pleased and impressed with this cleaner. My expectations for an at-home carpet cleaner were far exceeded.

product looks good but "service" was misleading
By waterwalker from Michigan
Reviews on Best Buy online convinced me that an extended warranty was needed because several customers had machines stop working soon after one year. The salesman in the Best Buy store did not have the 70 pt dehumidifier on hand, so he told me to buy it online and bring in the paperwork to get the extended warranty. The website made it appear that I was buying the machine from Best Buy, but when I brought in my paperwork I was told that this was bought from a 3rd party and could not get an extended warranty! "Just like Amazon" the Geek said! I do not want the machine without the extended warranty, so I'm told to return it -- which means shipping cost and a restocking fee! Best Buy will do nothing to correct their mistake, or deliberate misinformation. I have wasted a lot of time, theirs and mine, going through phone trees. The 3rd party has been much more responsive, but Best Buy has been a complete stonewall. Neither the store manager nor 888-Best-Buy will correct their mistake. I will now seek an extended warranty from the Chinese manufacturer, since the 3rd party store does not provide it. I will correct my mistakes, and stop wasting time, by no longer buying from Best Buy.

Can You Verify Where It's Made?
April 9, 2014
I understand your frustration, but you mentioned the "Chinese" manufacturer. The identical unit (same model #) on Amazon.com says it is made in the USA. Does your label say otherwise? Thanks

No Audio???
By Happiness
Great picture quality even at night but there is no audio!!!
Never heard of a dash cam with no audio. They should let you know that up front. The Garmin software to view the video downloaded easily onto windows 7 and worked well. However who wants a cash cam with no audio sound? It goes back to Best Buy tomorrow, and the hunt for decent dash cam will continue.

What does "not good" mean? It's a vague term. Does it last 1 hour, 10 hours, etc.? What were your expectations that were unmet?

Would this work for a 400 lb plus woman who has parkinsons and is immobile? This would be perfect for her. What is the size and can it be used just over the legs?

The fit would likely be tight, but possibly doable. The only way to find out is to try it. As per my review, it does cover only the lower portion of the body. Hope this helps.

Is wireless charging on the inside or on top of the lid? I'm hoping it's on the lid so I can charge and clean something else at the same time.

Charging is done on top of the device. The sanitizing compartment is separate and below.
