The Devil rides out
on October 23, 2008

we Zeppelin fans often wonder why Jimmy's output has been so light after 1980. "Coda" doesn't count. then we got "Death Wish 2" (that doesn't count either!). along comes "Outrider" which has some brilliant moments. it's good to hear Plant sing on "The Only One". veteran prog-rocker Chris Farlowe is dusted off for some vocal work as well. the instrumental work is impressive and leaves the Page fan desiring more! but alas we'd have to starve until Coverdale/Page formed---well worth the wait---C/P is Pagey's best work since "Presence".
don't overlook "Outrider" if you want some throwback guitar rock with a foot in the hazey 60s and the other in the arena rafters of the 70s. also aquire Jimmy live w/Black Crowes @ the Greek.
What's great about it: a rare post-Zep Pagey product

Solid Gold Sweet
on October 23, 2008

sharp 70s hard rock here featuring some tough riffs from Andy Scott that are 'sweetened' by the band's trademark harmonic vocal work. there are the obvious hit songs you know but the less popular tracks make this a must-have---"Into The Night", "Solid Gold Brass", etc
What's great about it: brimming w/classic hard rockers
What's not so great: RIP Brian Connelly

From the streets of the world here to crash & burn

Pat proves he's among the best rock and rollers in this live set. Compare to his other live CDs and you'll witness his ongoing vitality in a music world full of imposters and second-raters. The bluesy numbers meld nicely w/the hard rock songs on this disc, and the closer "Born Under A Bad Sign" sounds as fresh and muscular as ever. Long live Pat Travers Band!
What's great about it: Pat still kickin' booty

Profondo Goblin
on October 23, 2008

one may know Goblin for their brilliant soundtrack work--mastermind Claudio Simonetti carries the funereal torch to this very dark day. "Roller" is a studio effort that displays Goblin's instrumental prowess. Some of the tracks have been utilized in films like the magnifico "Suspiria". Recommended for Halloween party background music!
What's great about it: outre' progressive rock only found in Italy
What's not so great: costly import price

The Doctor has the midas touch

for fans of non-P.C. power metal and lovers of the immortal Savatage. what is delivered is some rough and nasty metal w/the flair and class that is the trademark of Jon Oliva. Caffery adds his biting guitar work to the proceedings, and the lyrics are wonderfully warped and lurid. Reminds me of a lost Savatage album from the "Power Of The Night" era!
What's great about it: from the insane minds of Jon Oliva and Chris Caffery

Fu Manchu is the missing link to great rock
on October 21, 2008

high energy punked up rock n roll from sunny California.
a fan of this CD would be wise to gather their other releases. the music is honest and raw.
a listen to Fu Manchu's live work will reveal that their studio work is quite close to their live sound--a sign of a great band.
What's great about it: features future Nebula members Eddie & Ruben

F.U.N.K. from the Voice of Rock
on October 21, 2008

excellent addition to the Hughes discography! the man continues to flourish like few others who originated in the late 60s/early 70s.
expect to hear Glenn's trademark soulful voice embellishing crystal clear hard rock w/a dash of F.U.N.K.
What's great about it: example of an artist improving over time w/each release
What's not so great: who designed the cover?? come on...someone call Hipgnosis

Roman Polanski's taut, moody psychological thriller gets a simple presentation in this DVD release. Repulsion has been given a full-screen transfer to disc in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo. The image is a bit on the contrasty side, and there are some minor visual anomalies that suggest this was mastered from a video source, but for the most part the picture is clear and the sound quality is acceptable. The dialogue is in English with no subtitles or closed captions, and there are no bonus materials; this is a film that certainly deserves a more elaborate DVD release, but this will fill the void well enough until a "special edition" disc comes along.

Be repulsed by Deneuve

early, early Polanski will chill and spellbind you. works even better as B&W due to the shock factor for a film from the 60s. Deneuve has a way to attract, annoy, and disgust as she goes mad in this classic. find "The Tenant" by Polanski as a companion to "Repulsion
What's great about it: made by the master Polanski
What's not so great: Roman is still in exile

This solid silver is solid gold

the early work from QMS rates among the most vital 'classic ' rock in history. their name seems to be understated in the big picture but this album shows how creative and fiery their live set could be. also check out John Cipollina on the Welsh band Man album "Maximum Darkness" from the mid-70s.
modern era 'jam bands' should take note and lend an ear to Quicksilver for a lesson in axework...
What's great about it: guitar mastery via John Cipollina
What's not so great: Rip John Cipollina

Texas metal group that has a progressive touch making for a satisfactory listen. This release is obviously regarding Nosferatu/Dracula and reminds a metal fan about what was good about the 1980s. No posers or silly death metal here--just good, hard power metal. Add to your collection of Savatage, Watchtower, Vicious Rumors, Armored Saint, Mekong Delta, Accept, etc etc
What's great about it: James Rivera=vokills
