Starz in action!
on November 11, 2008
Posted by: Rush2112

Starz had a solid run of quality albums starting w/this one. they are refreshingly controversial lyrically, and musically expect some vicious twin axework not too unlike Rocks-era Aerosmith. all 10 tracks are classics & the bonus cuts only strengthen this reissue of a 70s hard rock gem. find their later releases--Violation, Coliseum Rock, Attention Shoppers and the 1/2 dozen or so potent live CDs now out
What's great about it: double guitar East Coast hard rock attack

the Buzzard flies high

this is a band who had several records out in the early 70s and toured w/some of the eras big boys. they get no recognition at all via media (like, who cares anyway) or radio but rock collectors should check the Buzzard out. compare to early Jeff Beck Group, Green/Welch-era Fleetwood Mac, Wishbone Ash, or another fowl-named underrated group Wild Turkey
What's great about it: gritty British 70s rock
What's not so great: unknown here in USA, someone get the word out!

strike up the Michael Stanley Band one time!

MSB plays a live set on this CD, hence the title "Stagepass". They play a solid, blue collar type of rock that fits their Cleveland, OH roots. For listeners of Joe Walsh/James Gang, Spirit/Jay Ferguson, Bob Seger, REO Speedwagon, etc. Track down some other MSB releases like "Ladies Choice" and you'll be savoring a taste of Rosewood Bitters soon enough
What's great about it: who doesn't love the cover???
What's not so great: should be on FM radio outside the Midwest!

Kai Hansen and crew assault the Montreal crowd w/their brand of heavy metal in this DVD live show. This is filmed while on their Majestic tour a couple yrs ago, and since then the band has been back to the shores of North America opening for German cousins Helloween. I saw that show in person and the DVD is just as exciting as being there in the flesh! Cheerzzzzzzzz to the Rays!
What's great about it: Le Medley burned down in a metal blitzkrieg

take a trip down HWY 61 w/Johnny Winter

this is a nice example of 1970s 'arena rock' when the 'rock' was about the music and not image or explosions/light shows. what you get here is a Texas rock n roll tornado w/Johnny's stinging axe mowing thru some classic hard rockin & bluesy numbers. Bony Moronie might just shred your speakers if given free reign!
What's great about it: includes Randy Jo Hobbs, Richard Hughes & Floyd Radford

Blue Underground strikes gold once again with this fantastic edition of yet another genre classic -- José Larraz's 1974 erotic gothic gem Vampyres. Released in 2000 by William Lustig's old chums Anchor Bay, here Lustig and his Blue Underground folk up the ante and give you all those features and more! Back once again is the genius commentary with producer Brian Smedley-Aston and director Larraz, who's foul-mouthed fractured English is a joy to behold as he impassionately compares himself to Charles Bukowski, gushes over his leads' naked bodies, and trashes French Cinema continually through the 88-minute running time. Also included are both the international and U.S. trailer (the latter being the more explicit...go figure!) in addition to some great shots in the stills gallery. Those features alone would make a fine release (they did with Anchor Bay's version), but it's the new stuff that puts this beyond regular cult discs...First off, there's "Return of the Vampyres -- Interviews with Stars Marianne Morris and Anulka," a fantastic retrospective with the two leading sexy sirens who charmingly reminisce about everything from their inexperience to their frightened and funny stories about director Larraz. Some great shots are also included of the long-lost "Caravan Scene," an alternate ending that had to be scrapped due to budgetary reasons. As with their other releases, the menu designs are fantastic and add to the true testament that is Blue Underground's eye for quality. Add in a gorgeous Anulka Glamour Gallery, some amazing vintage posters and a director's bio (featuring some choice quotes from the crazy man himself), and you've got one of the best releases this film will probably ever see. In addition to all of the above, you DVD-ROM folk out there get the completely different documentary "VAMPYRES: A Tribute to the Ultimate in Erotic Horror Cinema" to sink your teeth into as well (sorry, the rest of you are out of luck).

Lust for a Vampyre(s)

directed w/class by Jose Larraz (find his other efforts!) this film is for watchers of 1960-70s Italian giallos, Deossorio, and even Hammer films. all of Larraz's films I have seen are well-shot and create a lurid & menacing atmosphere. you will willingly bare your throat for these Vampyres.
What's great about it: lovely job of casting...literally!

this is one of those movies that sticks in the memory for reasons hard to pinpoint. one must see it to understand. kind of a drama, kind of a sci-fi....all set w/the apocalypse over-hanging the world. gives me the same type of vibe as "The Last Wave" for some reason
What's great about it: Phoenix, Penn, Danes, etc

for followers of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s "Enterprise" is a revelation! "Deep Space (Sleep?!) Nine" lost me but this one got me back...the viewer is shown how mankind made the jump to space travel and exploration. we get a lot of neat details concerning different alien races introduced in the original series, and the 2-part episode "In A Mirror Darkly" will blow the mind of fans of the old episode "Mirror, Mirror
What's great about it: fills in a lot of blanks in the Star Trek timeline

This catalog release from Paramount is typical of this studio's approach toward most of their DVD product: high on quality but skimpy on supplements. The best element of this edition of Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is its transfer: the image quality is spotless and rich with color and detail while the mono soundtrack manages to be quite powerful despite its non-stereo limitations. In the area of extras, there is a commentary with writer/director Brian Clemens and star Caroline Munro: this track suffers from the occasional dull spot (Clemens sometimes falls into the trap of parroting the on-screen action) but both participants show a contagious enthusiasm for their work and their reminisces yield a few nice tidbits. Other than this commentary, the disc has no other features - not even a trailer, which is a common problem with Paramount discs. This skimpiness is disappointing but fans will be thankful that the studio invested in the commentary, which adds some welcome context to the film. All in all, Paramount's edition of Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter could have added a few more frills for the fans who will inevitably be its main audience but it's still a good way to acquainted with this cult favorite.

Kronos has risen from the grave (on DVD!)

from Hammer comes Captain Kronos---a cousin to the other Hammer vampire films w/Lee, Cushing, Bates, etc
a dash of wit is added to the vat of horror, and Horst gives a Scandanavian slant to the proceedings, previously unseen w/all of the British lead actors in the other Hammer efforts.
What's great about it: contains ravishing Caroline Munro!

an oasis in a musical wasteland

this is an atmospheric instrumental effort that easily takes it place next to the best of Ashra, Tangerine Dream, Schulze, Popul Vuh, etc.
this is totally unlike bland, flaccid 'new age' musak pumped out for the masses---don't expect John Tesh or Yanni!
the Germans perfected instrumental synth/electronic soundscapes in the 1970s and this CD only strengthens that statement.
What's great about it: "Made In Germany"
