Comfortable, Long Battery but Clumsy Microphone
on January 17, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
Summary:
Like the other Shokz open-ear headphones, these don’t block your ears, are comfortable to wear, sound good and have extra-long all-day battery life. The key benefits of the OpenComm UC over the regular models; however, is that they come with a pre-paired Bluetooth dongle for PC/Mac and have a rotating noise-canceling boom microphone. That makes these a much better choice for use on phone calls and video meetings. Aside from a few small needed improvements related to the boom microphone, these are really great for business calls and meetings, but equally good just to listen to music in between.
Pros:
* Comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.
* They don’t cover your ears so you can still hear other things when they’re not in use without taking them off.
* The noise-canceling boom microphone works well with clear voice on the other end of the call/meeting.
* All-day battery life.
* When discharged, you can get through another meeting with a quick charge.
* Can connect to your computer and your phone at the same time.
* Includes nice carrying case for travel use.
Cons:
* Proprietary charging cable that you need to keep nearby.
* Rotating boom microphone is really difficult to move with one hand.
* Microphone Mute requires two buttons pushed at the same time with one hand.
* Range is typical for a Bluetooth device and not as far as other wireless headset tech (like DECT).
Setup:
Charging the headset is easy with the proprietary magnetic cable. One end is a standard USB-A and the other is a magnetic connection to the headset that fits only one way. There is a light on the headset that indicates when charging is in progress or completed. Once it’s done charging, power it on with a long press of the Volume + button.
This is a Bluetooth headset and pairs/connects like any other similar device. The headset and included Bluetooth (UC) dongle use a newer and more stable Bluetooth radio than most PCs and Macs. If your computer doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth or even if it does but has an older version of built-in Bluetooth, the provided USB dongle is pre-paired and may have a more robust connection. Regardless, you don’t need to use the provided dongle and can instead just pair the headset to your computer’s built-in Bluetooth if desired, but I found on my 2019 Mac that the dongle had a better connection than the built-in Bluetooth on my Mac.
If you’re using the dongle, the headset is pre-paired so it just connects and works. If you’re not using the dongle, the headset should be in Bluetooth pairing mode on first use and you just pair it to your computer or other device as normal. There’s a friendly voice in the headset that says when it’s connecting, paired, connected or in need of charge.
Usage:
Once the headset is charged up, powered on and connected to your computer or other device, just make sure it is set as the default audio device (“Shokz Open Loop 100” on my Mac). Wearing a Shokz headset is a little different than others in that the headset slips over your ears and sits in front of them. When worn properly, you can still hear anything in the room while also hearing audio through them. They are light and don’t squeeze my head enough to be uncomfortable for a full day of work.
On the bottom of the right earpiece are two buttons for Volume Up and Down. The Volume Up button serves double-duty to power the headset on or off. There is a multifunction button on the right temple that does the usual of play, pause, skip, answer, end.
I spend the day wearing my headset while working from home and jumping on various business meetings, taking calls, or listening to videos on my computer. Because I can still hear my surroundings, I don’t need to take the headset off often.
A few small complaints, though; the microphone boom can be rotated up to store or down to have it near your mouth for better voice pickup. The rotating parts are so tight that it really takes quite a bit of effort to rotate the boom up or down with one hand. I would prefer that it were easier and smoother to do that with one hand.
The boom microphone works really well at picking up voices and not surroundings. However; other similar products that I’ve used had a nice features that mutes the microphone when the boom is up and unmutes it when the boom is down. This microphone is active whether it’s up or down. To mute the microphone, you have to press and hold both the Volume Up and Down buttons at the same time and do that again to unmute it. Definitely not as easy or convenient.
Audio quality is quite good for this type of product. There is some audio leakage (others nearby can hear what you’re listening to) but overall it’s pretty quiet for others around you. These don’t sound as clear and vibrant for music as the standard Shokz headphones, but their built-in boom microphone is significantly better for voice calls and meetings. Standard on-the-ear headsets may sound better, but are not as comfortable for long periods of time and you have to take them off to hear others nearby.
Since these are using the Bluetooth standard, they have limited roaming range. I found that I can walk to the next room over but they lost connection any further than 30+ feet away from my Mac. My other work headset (which blocks both ears) uses DECT and allows me to roam to the other end of my house while still remaining connected. Of course, range is highly dependent on placement of the Bluetooth UC dongle, the composition of your home and walls, etc…
Conclusion:
The Shokz OpenComm UC is a well-rounded bluetooth headset suitable for all-day use where phone or video calls are a higher priority than listening to music. Its microphone is much better than your typical music headset mic, it has significantly longer battery life than a typical music headset, and it doesn’t force you to take them off to hear what’s going on around you. While the microphone boom can benefit from some ease of use refinements, the headset overall is a solid product and would be welcome in any home office setting.

Attractive, Fast and Quiet
on December 13, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
Summary:
With its razor-thin bezels and an attractive stand, this Asus all-in-one PC is a stylish way to include a desktop-type PC on your desk without taking up much space. The built-in web cam and touch screen make it suitable for nearly any task. You can even add another monitor or use this PC’s monitor as a screen for something else by plugging an external device such as a game system, Bluray/DVD player or streaming stick into the HDMI ports.
Pros:
* Crisp, clear full HD screen with an anti-glare coating.
* Razor-thin bezels keep the unit as small as possible.
* Use it any way you like with the touch screen, full-size wireless keyboard with shortcut keys and wireless optical mouse.
* Plenty of ports for USB-A and -C, headphone jack, HDMI IN/OUT and even wired ethernet.
* Great built-in speakers and microphones.
* Fast and capable.
Cons:
* Stand is not removable and no VESA mount for wall or monitor arm mounting.
* Webcam is OK but not great.
* No optical drive but mostly isn’t needed anymore.
* Minimal upgrade capability.
Setup:
There are basically 4 items in the box; the wireless keyboard and mouse, the power adapter and the main unit. Setup was really fast and easy. The keyboard and mouse both have batteries already inserted and you just need to remove the plastic bits that keep the batteries from draining in shipment. The mouse has a pre-paired USB dongle inside that you plug in to the back of the PC. The power adapter is nice and small (all things considered) and it has a right-angle plug that fits in the back of the PC.
Once you get the single power cord plugged in and the keyboard/mouse dongle connected, just press the power button on the back-right of the screen and walk through Windows 11 setup. That’s it! The whole process including OS updates took less than 15 minutes for me. I won’t comment on Windows 11 as it’s pretty much the same across brands, but there was a point in the process where the PC gets registered with ASUS automatically which was nice.
Usage:
For me, this all-in-one replaces an older all-in-one PC made by a competitor. It has the same size screen but the overall device is significantly smaller due to smaller bezels and downward-firing speakers. While most of the parts are black plastic including the keyboard and mouse, the PC’s stand is solid metal and looks really nice. You can even store the keyboard on that stand when it’s not in use to save more desktop space.
The provided wireless optical mouse is basic but gets the job done; no extra buttons but the scroll wheel is useful. I haven’t been using the keyboard and mouse long enough to estimate their battery life but they both use standard disposable batteries which should be easy to find when it’s time to replace them. The keyboard has helpful shortcut keys for everything from volume and media playback to brightness and other things but is not backlit.
The screen is really stable on that metal stand so if you choose to poke the touchscreen the unit won’t wobble. The screen itself is bright and clear with an anti-glare coating that helps reduce reflections. The built-in webcam at the top of the screen is OK for day-to-day use but is not fantastic. There is a small LED next to the camera that lights up when the camera is on, but there is no mechanical cover to prevent the camera for seeing things when it is supposedly off.
The built-in speakers are at the bottom edge of the screen and aim downward at the desk. They sound remarkably good for their size and will probably be satisfactory for standard sized rooms and for all but the most discerning audiophiles. There is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack under the right side of the screen for connecting external audio or headphones. Also on the bottom edge is a USB-A port for convenient temporary connections such as phones, cameras or other devices so you don’t need to reach around the back.
Another great feature of this PC are the HDMI-IN and HDMI-OUT jacks. You can connect an external monitor for your PC to the HDMI-OUT jack, and the HDMI-IN jack lets you use the screen and speakers of your PC for another device such as a game system, DVD/Bluray player or a set-top box. There is a “mode” button on the bottom edge of the screen to switch input modes between the Windows PC part and the external device. When on Input mode, the Windows PC is not used at all and the screen and speakers just connect to whatever is plugged in to that HDMI port. The PC can still perform tasks in the background if you want, but you’ll be watching and listening to whatever is plugged in to the HDMI-IN port instead.
For those with real security concerns, there’s also a Kensington Lock port on the left side so you can cable the PC to a desk and keep it from walking away ;-)
The specs on this PC are more than adequate for normal everyday use. There’s enough RAM to keep Windows from slowing down often and the SSD storage is fast for storing frequently-used local stuff. You’ll probably want to plug in a larger external drive if you like saving lots of audio, photos or video locally, though.
My only disappointment that cannot easily be worked around is that the stand is not removable and there are no VESA mounting holes on the back of the screen. This means that this PC will only ever sit on a desk and cannot be mounted on the wall or attached to a monitor arm. If that’s not a dealbreaker for you, then this PC will probably meet your needs quite well.
Conclusion:
A well-rounded and stylish all-in-one PC with a small presence on your desk, a nice touch screen, good audio and convenient HDMI input mode. The bundled wireless keyboard and mouse work well for basic use and there are plenty of ports on the back and under the screen for connectivity and expansion. Overall, a really nice all-in-one unit for those would want a bit more capability than a laptop can provide yet don’t need a huge tower PC sitting on their desk.

Comfortable and stylish with a ton of Useful Data
on November 1, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
Setup:
The Whoop band is similar to other wrist-worn wearables in that it straps to your wrist and looks like a smart watch but without a screen to distract you. It doesn’t show the time, phone notifications, or summary data. In fact, it has just one small LED to indicate battery status and doesn’t even have a charging port. Instead of a cable and a USB adapter to plug into the strap directly, it comes with an external battery pack that you charge with a cable and adapter, and once that external battery is charged, just slide it on top of the strap to charge the strap wirelessly. It does add a bit of thickness and bulk for the 90 or so minutes needed to charge the strap, but this is a worthwhile tradeoff to not need to remove the strap (and loose data recording) for that 90 minutes. I’ve found that the extra bulk is barely noticeable unless you have long sleeves on.
This may sound cumbersome to have to charge the external battery and then use the charged battery to charge the strap, but this enables something that no other wearable can do - you can charge the strap while wearing it! Once the strap is charged up, just open up the app and it walks you through pairing the strap, setting up your Whoop user account, setting your goals and updating strap firmware if necessary.
The app has a TON of information that will start flowing in once you’ve worn the strap for a while, but at the beginning, just set up the basics and wear the strap continuously to let it record as much data as possible while you’re sleeping, working out or just going about your day.
The strap itself is comfortable to wear and stylish, too! The bands are interchangeable with many options available for purchase. Adjusting the band is super easy. Once you get the right fit, putting the band on or taking it off is as simple as lifting the clasp as the strap length is a set-it-and-forget-it kinda thing. There is no on or off button and nothing else to do with the strap - just wear it and occasionally slide the battery pack on to charge it back up.
Typical Use:
This is not a basic fitness wearable that merely gathers heart rate and step info. This is a serious health tracker that gathers tons on metrics and coalesces them into useful information. At the beginning of your Whoop journey, the info available will be mostly superficial and basic, but as you continue to wear it 24/7, it starts seeing trends and makes suggestions to better meet your fitness and recovery goals.
The Home screen is where you see the overview of your day; how much effort you’ve expending (Strain) and how well your body has bounced back from the effort you’ve put in (Recovery). Your HRV, calories burned, any manually or automatically detected activities, the status of the strap, etc…. it’s all there on a great summary view that takes into account the goals that you chose when setting up the account.
From there, you can dig in to the details on just about everything. You can see your sleep profile and all of the details for the last night or your trends so far. You can see the details for each activity you’ve logged and how it impacts your day. You can also see past days and overall trends. I’ve always been a light sleeper and never quite feel refreshed in the mornings. Whoop is helping me figure out what is causing this and how to fix it!
I’ve been using Whoop for over 30 days so the app has now “unlocked” additional coaching and performance assessments. I can see what days of the week I’m most active and how my prior sleep affects my readiness to take on the day. I can also get a better estimation of whether I should focus on effort or recovery for the day based on yesterday’s results.
The analytics should be super headful for anyone who is serious into training and fitness, but it’s also useful insight for those who want to maintain or improve their overall fitness. I’m not going to compete in any triathlons anytime soon, but I do hope to stay as healthy as possible while I gracefully age and Whoop is helping me do that.
I must admit to being a gadget junkie and right now I’m wearing a smart watch on my left wrist, a smart ring on my right hand, and the Whoop on my right wrist so I’ve got 3 devices all measuring all sorts of data. The Whoop is by far the most detailed and actionable.
Last week I went on a vacation where I didn’t have internet access for a week. Since the Whoop strap doesn’t have a screen, the Whoop app is needed to sync with and show information about the strap. While off-grid, the app lost my login and required me to log in again, but it couldn’t because I didn’t have ‘net access. Without the app, I needed to rely on the strap’s single LED to tell me when I needed to slide the charger on, and I couldn’t see any data. Once I got back online, it took quite a while for a week’s worth of strap data to catch up and sync to the app and the cloud, but it all worked fine. I just wish the app had either kept me logged in or at least allowed me to log in for local access until I returned online.
By the way, the tracker part of the strap can even be removed from the wristband and inserted in various articles of branded clothing like running shorts, etc. I’m not sure how the heart rate sensor would work if the strap isn’t on your wrist, but at least it’s an option for those who don’t like to wear a wrist strap.
Conclusion:
With detailed analytics and useful summary, coaching and performance assessments, the Whoop is a fitness tracker with better than average style and great detailed info. Aside from not being able to use the app without internet access, the Whoop meets all of my fitness tracking needs in a comfortable to wear and easy to clean wrist strap that you don’t even need to take off your wrist to charge.

Great for In, Around AND Outside the Home
on October 30, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
Summary:
For those with an existing Sonos system or wanting to build a Sonos system at home, the Roam SL is an awesome portable speaker for both home and away use. It has all of the same sound and build quality as the regular Sonos Roam but drops a bit of cost by removing the microphone. It work equally well in, outside and away from your home system.
Pros:
* Sounds amazing!
* Great battery life.
* Small and compact.
* Automatic roaming (pun intended) between your home Sonos (WiFi) and away (Bluetooth) use.
Cons:
* No automatic sound tuning (TrueTone) due to removed microphone.
* No Voice control (due to removed microphone).
* No use as a speakerphone via Bluetooth (due to removed microphone).
Setup:
If you’ve recently set up a Sonos product, you know how easy it is via the comprehensive Sonos app. It guides you through initial setup, pairing, configuration and system updates. Whether you’re a seasoned pro with a large Sonos system or a beginner setting up your first Sonos product, the app walks you through everything to quickly get it set up and playing your favorite music.
Once set up using the app on your phone, the Roam connects to your home’s WiFi and joins your Sonos audio system. You can leave it plugged in to power and have it fill in sounds in a smaller room, or unplug it and take it anywhere in or around your home. When you leave the range of your home Sonos system, it can be easily switched over to be a Bluetooth speaker for your phone or other compatible device.
All setup and configuration is via the app but there are a few shortcuts with the buttons on the Roam itself. You can even have the Roam join a nearby Sonos speaker to quickly create a group of speakers without even touching the app.
Typical Usage:
The Roam SL is essentially the same as the non-SL version of the Sonos Roam with the removal of the built-in microphone (and a few dollars of cost). The microphone was basically used for 3 things; voice control through Google, Alexa or Sonos’ own voice command systems, as a speakerphone when connected to your Android or iPhone as a Bluetooth device, and lastly for automatic sound tuning. If none of those things matter to you, then you’ll likely enjoy the Roam SL and its cost savings.
I have a mid-sized Sonos system at home and this Roam joined right in easily playing whatever I chose for it. I just was on a vacation where I took my Roam with me for the hotel room. Even with my phone disconnected from my home WiFi, the app still connected to my Roam and showed battery status and other connections. It easily connected to my phone and sounded great on the trip, and then it re-joined my Sonos system when I returned home.
Battery life is really good, too. It has a USB-C port for charging but can also use the Sonos-designed charging pad or any other qI charger for easier grab-and-go use. Charging wirelessly is convenient but slower than via the cable, as it usually is.
There are buttons on the top (or left if lying flat on a table) for Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause and power if you want to use the local control versus the app and your phone.
While the Roam may cost a bit more than a similarly-sized regular Bluetooth speaker, it does double-duty as a part of your greater Sonos system when connected to WiFi at home which is something that a regular Bluetooth speaker cannot do.
I frequently take my Roam outside to listen to my Sonos system while gardening or working on my car. That’s really convenient to have the speaker stream music over WiFi rather than connecting directly to my phone while I’m home. It’s also great to have that portability at home and have the capability to take the speaker with me when I leave home.
Conclusion:
I have absolutely no complaints with the Sonos Roam SL. If you need a portable Bluetooth speaker but also want to stream music around your home over WiFi, you cannot go wrong with Sonos. If you need the microphone for voice control or like the self-tuning, get the regular Roam, but either way, the Sonos Roam is a great speaker for use in, around and away from your home.

Great Sound, Looks OEM.
on October 30, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
Summary:
Sounds great and integrates perfectly with the Quest 2, but at the expense of a small amount of extra weight and a few notable inconveniences.
Hits:
* Sounds better than built-in speakers.
* Design fits great and almost doesn’t feel like an add-on.
* High-quality construction.
Misses:
* Almost need to top-out the volume to hear them well.
* Relocated charge port is not as convenient.
* Rotating them up/down triggers pass-trough video repeatedly.
Setup:
There are two halves; one for each side, and each just slides on to the Quest’s side pieces. There is a thin wire that connects them together and tucks under the top Velcro to create a seamless look. They don’t have their own battery and are powered by the Quest’s USB-C port with an integrated L-shaped plug that neatly and perfectly fits into the Quest’s charge port.
Once they are mounted and plugged in, they are set up and ready to go!
Typical Usage:
The speakers themselves are on arms that rotate down to cover your ears for listening to the Quest or up to better hear your immediate surroundings. The arms have detents to hold them where you’d like them, but beware that rotating past a detent will most likely trigger the Quest’s pass-through video mode and pause whatever you were watching in VR. And since you will probably rotate through multiple detents, the pass-through mode will get triggered multiple times on and off before the speakers are done being rotated.
It’s also worth noting that even though they sound better than the built-in speakers, you will probably need to crank up the volume to near-max levels to hear them well. For me, that was about 7 out of 10 on the volume meter which didn’t leave much room to increases the volume further.
It really is convenient to have these speakers mounted for a clean one-piece design when putting on or removing the Quest 2 for use. The built-in speakers never sounded that great to me, so I had been using earbuds with it. The Chorus is much more convenient than earbuds due to the one-piece integrated design, and sounds pretty good, so I think it’s a worthwhile upgrade.
Previous to getting the Chorus, I used a dock that would charge my Quest 2 and the controllers by just resting them in slots in the dock. The Chorus essentially relocates the Quest’s charging plug so that a dock such as mine will no longer work. Furthermore, the USB-C plug is on the underside of the Chorus so it puts the USB-C cable at an awkward bend when resting the Quest on a table with the cord plugged in.
Conclusion:
Great fit, great design and sounds much better than the built-in speakers. If you can live with the relocated charging port and don’t mind the accidental VR pass-through mode when rotating the speakers up or down, then the Chorus is a good value to improve your VR experience.

Tiny and Powerful but Solid (a Bit Heavy)
on September 2, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
This 3-device USB charger packs a powerful 65W punch and can charge up to 3 devices at the same time. The retractable prongs make it easy to stash in a bag to be your trusty travel partner. It’s on the heavier side and sticks out from the outlet quite a bit but otherwise is friendly to neighbors at the outlet and is more than powerful and flexible enough for keeping your stuff powered up.
Pros:
* Tiny for its power.
* Retractable power prongs for compact storage.
* Doesn’t take up much outlet space.
* 2x USB-C and 1x USB-A; all high power.
* Feels solid and high-quality.
Cons:
* A bit heavy (129g or 1/4 lb).
* Sticks out from the outlet a lot.

Usage:
Fold out the prongs, stick them in a wall socket and plug in up to 3 USB devices to power or charge them up. There are 2x high-power USB-C ports and 1x high-power USB-A port. This charger can supply up to 65W total power across all 3 ports. Of course, this means that to get the maximum 65W for one device, you have to plug it in to one of the 2 USB-C ports and leave the other 2 ports empty. If all 3 ports are used, the USB-A port tops out at 12W and the pair of USB-C ports top out at up to 40W max per port and 53W combined. That’s a lot of math, but suffice to say that this charger will provide more than enough juice for your devices with a single compact charger.
As for the hardware, it’s really compact and takes up only one outlet on a standard wall outlet, plus it can easily fit a lot of power strips without covering multiple outlets. Due to physics, to get a small footprint so as to not block multiple outlets, it has to be bigger elsewhere. At the outlet, it only needs 1”x1.25” but will stick out 2.5” plus your cables. Note that if you have a wall outlet with “loose” prong holes, this adapter may have trouble staying in place due to its heft and how far it sticks out.
It might seem heavy because its solid but it weighs in at 129g (about a 1/4 lb) which is about half of my larger phone (which is 247g). I also have a single-port Anker 65W charger that is 116g, so the extra 13g gets you 2 more ports which seems like a good tradeoff to me. Plus, that single-port 65W charger needs more space at the outlet so it has the potential to block nearby outlets.
By the way, this adapter’s “vampire” drain is only 0.23W - that’s the power used when plugged in to an outlet but not charging anything.
Conclusion:
This adapter packs a ton of charging power in a tiny solid box. It easily fits in bags and perhaps even pockets, doesn’t block neighboring outlets and powers up to 3 power-hungry devices.

Basic bootup speeds won’t cut it — not at work, on the go, or in the game. But the Crucial P3 SSD is anything but basic. With NVMe performance that’s more than 6x faster than SATA2 and storage capacities up to 4TB3, the P3 leaves older storage technology in the dust. Get faster bootups, downloads and file transfers, and store all your files, photos, videos, apps, and games with room to spare with the quality and dependability you expect from Crucial.

Great Performance and Long Warranty
on August 25, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
Not a ton to write about an SSD. Assuming it meets the specs for that type of SSD, it either works or doesn’t. In this case, it installed easily and performed well. I installed some games on it and did a speed test; both indicated a fast SSD.
Pros:
* Large capacity.
* Fast read speeds.
* Fast write speeds.
* Great 5-year warranty.
Cons:
* None.
Setup and Use:
Installation was as you’d expect for an SSD; just plug it in and power up your laptop. My Windows 11 laptop recognized it right away and made it available for use. Among other things, I installed Star Citizen on the SSD and it ran great from there with no issues. The game loaded quickly and gameplay was fast and fluid.
According to HD Tune Pro, both the read and write speeds were pretty good with an average transfer rate of about 1.6Gb/sec for reads and writes.
Conclusion:
A fast SSD with a good warranty. Hopefully you won’t ever need it, but Crucial is known for making solid stuff and having great support. Not much else to say ;-)

Mesmerizing and Relaxing
on August 23, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
The complexity of patterns this thing can make is amazing! The app has a ton of functionality and is easy to use once connected via Bluetooth. The lighting effects are really calming. It’s nearly silent and can even be scheduled so it doesn’t run at night or any other times you want.
Pros:
* Vast array of complex patterns.
* Calming lighting that is fully controllable.
* Easy to use app for choosing patterns, playlists, lighting, schedules, etc.
Cons:
* App works via Bluetooth so must be nearby to control.
* Connectivity could be easier.
Setup:
Basic setup is a bit more involved than just plugging it in, but it was still relatively easy. The base unit fits on most end tables, nightstands, coffee tables or any other flat level surface you have. Best to set it up where you might walk by it often so you can gaze at the mesmerizing patterns often. Next step is emptying the supplied pack of fine sand into the middle of the base and spreading it around evenly with the provided plastic rake. Place the metal ball in the middle so it magnetically sticks to the mechanism under the sand bowl. Lastly, place the glass top on it and plug it in.
BTW, the glass top not only keeps everything neat and clean, but also keeps curious critters (cats, etc.) from messing around with the ball or sand :-)
Install the app and select the unit’s Bluetooth name. This is the only part that was not easy. When I first set it up, the Drift wasn’t listed by any logical name like “Drift” or “Homedics.” I had about 8 nearby devices in the list to choose from and it was trial-and-error to discover that my Drift was the one listed as “KS……” (maybe for Kinetic Sculpture?). After all of this, I discovered that there’s a sticker on the bottom of the unit that lists this “KS….” bluetooth name. If you hadn’t noticed that before setting it up, you probably won’t ever pick it up again to find that sticker after filling it up with sand. Once I figured out which one was my Drift, the rest was easy. The app guided me through everything including what all the controls in the app were.
About a week later, there was both an app and a device firmware update. This changed the bluetooth name to something a little more obvious of “Homedics drift XXXX” where the XXXX were the last four digits of the “KS….” sticker. Of course, if you have more than one of these within bluetooth range, you still have to guess which one you’re connecting to, but at least it’s more obvious than “KS….” from the hidden sticker and you can probably infer that the last four digits of the sticker are the same as the digits in the Bluetooth name.
Usage:
There are two buttons on the back for power and lighting so you don’t need to have the app handy just to turn the lights off, etc. The majority of functions are controlled via the app, though. You can choose from over 100 complex patterns, make playlists, choose the color and mode of the lighting and see the progress of the design being drawn by the ball in the sand.
It is nearly silent when making a sculpture with barely a hint of sound from the metal ball as it rolls over the fine sand. Even so, you can schedule when the Drift is on so perhaps it turns off at night while you’re sleeping, or just turn off the lights at night.
The complexity of designs this can make is truly unique and fun to watch. The app implies that new patterns might be added and available for use at a later date, too.
Again, my only real complaint is that the Bluetooth device must be selected from a list every time you connect to use the app. It would be great if the app could remember and reconnect automatically if in range after the first time you select it from the list.
Conclusion:
Fascinating and mesmerizing with tons of options for the designs it can produce. Easy to control and set up once you figure out the device’s name to select from the Bluetooth list. Overall, a really cool addition to any home or spa.

The Strong and (Nearly) Silent Type
on August 14, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
Not a ton to write about a garbage disposer. Installation is fairly normalized, so it basically comes down to noise level, power and warranty. This disposer by Smart Choice is significantly quieter than my prior “quiet” model, had no problems chewing up anything I thew its way, and has a 10 year warranty. Win, win, win!
Pros:
* Quiet (for a disposer).
* Powerful motor chews through just about anything.
* Great warranty.
* No more difficult to install than any other disposer.
* Serial and model, and toll-free phone number on a sticker near the end of the power cord as well as under the unit.
Cons:
* None.
Setup and Use:
Due to its powerful motor and sound insulation, it’s a larger model, so plan for it taking up some space under your sink. Installation is standard fare for a garbage disposer with no surprises. Uninstallation of the prior and installation of this new one took less than a hour including cleanup.
Unlike competing bigger-name models, there is no branding on the sink rim or the stopper, but it is made by Electrolux so it’s backed by a big name, at least.
I did a semi-scientific comparison of my prior model (a “good” one by a big brand name) and this new one. When water was running and the disposer was empty, this Smart Choice model was 10db quieter, and when chewing through some tough stuff, it was about 7db quieter. I’d call that significant enough to call it a quieter model yet it still has enough power to not shy away from tough stuff.
The installation/usage manual is nothing terribly fancy but it gets the points across. There is a toll-free phone number in the manual in case you need help (during the business day) but I couldn’t find any way to register it online. The manual does state that the 10-year warranty just needs the serial number, which is conveniently printed on the a water-proof sticker near the end of the power cord along with the unit’s model number and the toll-free support phone number - nice!
Conclusion:
Strong, quiet and a great warranty. What more do you need in a garbage disposer that you’ll hear but never see?

Great Results as an Indoor Grill and Air Fryer
on August 13, 2022
Posted by: gadgeTT
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
To find a place in my cramped kitchen, a cooking appliance must fulfill two basic needs for me; great cooking results and easy cleanup. This Foodi Grill does both. Assuming you have a need for the cooking modes this grill has to offer, and have enough counter or storage space for it when it’s not in use, you’ll get some really great results. When you’re done cooking, just about every part that can get messy pops out and goes in the dishwasher for easy cleanup.
Pros:
* Great cooking results.
* Easy to use controls and displays.
* Versatile cooking programs.
* Temperature probe neatly stores in a side pocket and plugs in on the outside.
Cons:
* All parts cannot nest inside so it’s not as compact for storage as it could be.
* Cord is not removable and doesn’t wrap on unit, so cord just dangles when not in use.
* No obvious handles to pick it up easily.
* “XL” also means that it’s not tiny so it needs a bit of counter and storage space.
Setup and Use:
Most of the internal parts are non-stick steel or aluminum and are designed to fit in one direction inside with notches that make this obvious. The removable spatter screen that fits in the top isn’t the easiest to remove, especially if really messy, but it does come off and can go through the dishwasher like most of the other parts except for the temperature probe. I’m an RTFM kinda guy and it should be noted that the user’s manual incorrectly states that the probe stores and plugs in on the left side, but it’s really the right side. No biggie, but someone kinda goofed on the proofreading.
I used the grill mode to cook up some strip steak and yellow squash. I put the steak on at level 4 Med-Rare and the squash was on a Hi grill for 5 minutes. Both cooked back-to-back (not at the same time) and both came out perfectly done. Cleanup was a breeze because I just put everything in the dishwasher. If you don’t have a dishwasher, though, the grill plate can be a challenge to clean but is nonstick so the included brush works well.
Once the parts were clean, I wanted to nest everything back inside the cooled-off grill for storage, but the grill pan and air fry pan don’t fit inside at the same time. Bummer. That’s a small design flaw in my book. The cord also doesn’t wrap under or inside the unit so you just have to wrap it up with a twist-tie or leave it dangling. At least the temperature probe stores neatly in a little pod that magnetically docks in a spot on the right side of the grill.
BTW, the “Smart” in the name refers to the automatic probe-based cooking; not to any Bluetooth, WiFi or app-based connectivity. This is a standalone cooking appliance which is not necessarily a bad thing. One less thing to install an app for, update the firmware of, and worry about connecting before use.
Conclusion:
If you have the need for an indoor grill and have enough counter top or storage space for it, you can’t go wrong with this Foodi grill. It provides fast and accurate grilling, roasting and air-frying with super-easy cleanup. A few small design improvements would make it even better for storage, but the results still speak for themselves.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Where can I buy a replacement battery? How much does the replacement battery cost?

The internal battery is not replaceable by the customer. You have to remove the whole doorbell from the mounting bracket using the supplied metal "key", bring it inside and plug it in to recharge it... about every 2-3 months.

Has anyone been able to get the game/chat balancer working properly? I have looked everywhere for a solid solution and have not been able to get it working or find a working example. the game/chat balancer for me makes ALL sounds quieter or louder.

As near as I can tell, this balances the audio between the TOSLINK (optical) input on the USB puck and the audio coming from the USB connection. If you're not using the TOSLINK input, then the switch will basically be useless. Hope this helps.
