Luxury Wireless Audiophile Perfection
on November 20, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
Luxury around ear headphones are typically used for one thing - listening to music in the best possible quality. Everything else is secondary. These Bowers & Wilkins headphones have some expected conveniences, but first and foremost- they excel at audio perfection. Plus, they look really swanky! Of the built-in extras, the Active Noise Cancelation (ANC) is better than most and the Transparency mode is also good. Calls are nice and clear, and the battery life ensures that you’ll be set for marathon listening sessions.
Highlights:
* Built-in 24-bit DsP for exceptional sound quality.
* aptX Adaptive and Bluetooth 5.2 for great audio over Bluetooth.
* Supports the new BLE GATT audio profile for future compatibility.
* Supports Multi-point Bluetooth pairing.
* Better than average ANC with 4 microphones.
* Clear calls with 2 microphones.
* Good ambient passthrough (Transparency) mode.
* Can listen over Bluetooth or USB-C while charging.
* Easy to find and use buttons for local control.
* Long battery life of 30 hrs on a full charge with ANC on (15 min quick charge for 7 hrs of listening).
* Fold flat and store in case with room for included charging and analog audio cables.
Room for Improvement:
* Power light is not easy to see while being charged if folded flat.
* Cannot toggle between ANC and Transparent only.
* Have to choose between shortcut button toggling audio mode OR being able to trigger phone’s assistant.
* Ear pads are not removable or replaceable.
Setup:
Setup was about as easy as you can get. As always, plug ‘em in to ensure a full charge first using the provided USB-C cord and your choice of USB adapter. Charging takes up to 2 hrs and the LED turns solid green when done. By the way, the battery status LED is on the left edge of the right ear cup which when folded flat, is hidden so it’s not easy to see the LED light.
Install the Bowers & Wilkins Music App on your Android or iPhone and sign in with your free account. Turn on the headphones and slide the power switch to “pairing” until you hear the friendly lady say that pairing is enabled. The app should then quickly find and pair to your headphones.
There are a few basic settings you can change in the app, but nothing is required. Settings include things like what the shortcut button on the left ear cup does and the bass and treble boost (no EQ curves, though).
Once setup, you basically just turn it on and it reconnects to the last two devices you paired to (or used). There’s also audio confirmations for which sound mode you’re in, whether the battery needs recharging, etc.. The reset is just listening to whatever source you like.
Usage:
As with most around-the-ear headphones, the position of ear-cups is adjustable to fit your particular head. The storage case only fits the headphones when the cups are fully retracted, so unless you use them is this position, you have to adjust them for use each time you take them out of the case and adjust them back down to fit them in the case. Of course, if you don’t put the headphones back in the case after each use (or always use them in the most retracted state), then this doesn’t matter.
On the right ear cup is a power button that s slightly non-standard in that it its a physical toggle rather than a momentary tap button like usual. Slide the power button up to turn on the headphones and slide it back down to turn them off. When the switch is on, slide it up further and hold for a few seconds to put the headphones in pairing mode to pair to another device like your tablet or computer.
Below the power button is a trio of buttons that includes dedicated volume up and down buttons and the typical multi-function button. The multi-function button has a nice textured surface so you can easily find it with your finger while wearing the headphones and then easily find the volume buttons from there.
The only button on the left ear cup is a shortcut button that you can set up to either toggle the audio mode (ANC On, Transparency On or both Off), OR trigger your phone’s assistant (if applicable). If I had my way, I would make it so that the shortcut button does one of those options on a tap and the other on a long press, and you can choose which is the tap and which is the long press via the app. As it is, that button can do one or the other so if you choose to invoke your Assistant, you have to use the app to switch audio modes, etc.. Also, it would be nice if we could omit the “both off” option from the audio mode shortcut so that tapping that button toggles only between ANC ON and Transparency ON and skips the “both off” option. This is a nit, though.
The Napa leather-wrapped ear cups are supremely comfortable for long listening sessions as is the leather-wrapped headband. The overall design is very chic and sculpted with excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. Even the case is well-designed with a compartment with a magnetic lid that stores the provided audio and USB-C cables.
All of this is the details and the fluff for headphones and is meaningless if they don’t sound good…. and these sound AMAZING! I listened to “lossless” audio of various genres via Apple Music on my iPhone 15 Pro Max as well as FLAC files on my dedicated audio player. These headphones revealed nuances in the music that I have never heard before!
Overall:
These headphones sound superb with all genres that I threw at them. They fit great and feel comfortable for hours of listening pleasure. The Hybrid ANC works well, the transparent mode works well, and they look fantastic. What more can you ask for in luxury wireless headphones?
I would recommend this to a friend!

Flexible Power and Protection
on November 5, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
Most power strips lay flat and have their plugs go in the flat side. This power strip instead has the plugs go in the shorter edge. It might not seem like a big deal, but this allows the strip to snug up against a wall or behind furniture and not have the cords stick out. There’s plenty of outlets for a lot of stuff including powered 2 USB devices without adapters and it’s all protected from surges and spikes.
Benefits:
* Flat design with plugs on the shorter edge.
* Multiple mounting options.
* 7 outlets with 2 widely-spaced for power adapters.
* 2 USB ports; 1x USB-C, 1x USB-A
* Long fabric cord with space-saving plug.
* 2 RJ-11/45 jacks for telephone/networking.
* 2 coax jacks for Cable TV/modem.
* Provided stands to sit it upright.
Areas for Improvement:
* Outlets would fit things better if they were all rotated 180 degrees.
* Is there really a need for the Coax jacks?
* Is there really a need for the RJ-11/45 ports?
Usage:
The slim design and multiple mounting options add to this power strip’s flexibility. You can mount to a wall with the keyholes or lay it flat on the floor or a table. Either way, the cords plug in on the shorter side so it fits snugly against the wall or takes up less room on the shelf. Or you can use the provided stands and have the outlets on the top and place it on the floor behind a home theater or computer desk. Either way, it’s nice having the cords plug in on the side rather than on the wide flat surface to save space.
Of the seven (7) power outlets, two (2) are widely-spaced to fit larger power adapters. The rest are standard spacing to fit power cords, but they still will fit a bunch of USB adapters depending on their size. I would prefer that the outlets were facing the other way, though, so that larger adapters would fit without encroaching on the regular outlets.
There are also two (2) USB ports to directly power USB devices without needing any adapters and they can supply up to 32W total. The USB-C port supports PD and can supply up to 20W while the USB-A port can supply up to 12W. Both ports are on the same edge as the AC plugs.
I’m sure someone out there might find a need for the Coax and RJ-11/45 ports, but I personally have never used them in my setups. If you want them, they are on opposite ends of the power strip so it still fits flat against a wall or behind furniture.
The six (6) foot braided captive cord is really nice and gives the product a quality feel. The space-saving plug not only hugs the outlet but the cord comes out at an angle so it doesn’t block another outlet.
There is a power switch that also resets the unit if it gets tripped.
Other than that, it’s a pretty standard power strip with surge protection. The box claims that it has 3-line protection from surges and spikes and it has a 3-year warranty. Separate lights on the side indicate when the strip is “Protected” and “Grounded.” The box also claims that there is a $750,000.00 limited warranty against damage to connected equipment (certain restrictions apply).
Overall:
A well-designed power strip with surge/spike protection for up to seven AC, 2 USB, 2 coax and 2 telephone/network connections. The design makes it more flexible to mount and it has plenty of space for a lot of stuff.

Remote safety & security. Easy to install and Use.
on November 2, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
More than just a dash cam. The iQ is a high-resolution mobile security and safety system that silently watches your car both while it is being driven and while it is parked. With a paid subscription, it has a persistent cellular LTE connection so it can remain accessible when you’re not in your car, but can also send for help when you can’t. A subscription plan is needed to get the most out of it, but the features are well worth it. I’ve been on the hunt for a high-res cellular-enabled dash cam that will not only record events but guard the car and notify me remotely of anything that might happen. This iQ does all that and more!
Pros:
* Solid and well-built.
* Easy to set up and includes everything needed for both OBD and hard-wired connections.
* Nice app.
* Useful display on device.
* Clear wide-angle 4K front video and wide-angle night video for the cabin (interior).
* Radar for proximity sensing in both the main and the optional rear cameras.
* Comes with 64gb microSD for local storage.
Cons:
* Cannot rename camera (yet).
* OBD connector was a tight fit in my car.
* No way to hide the “No rear camera” spacer if the optional rear camera isn’t connected.
* No way to prevent opening/closing the driver’s door from triggering a “bump” event.
* Subscription features are comprehensive and useful but not cheap.
Setup:
Installation of a dash cam used to be something that most people should leave for a trained technician. Between tapping into the appropriate power in the car’s fuse box and routing numerous cables, it was a daunting task even for the more experienced driver.
Starting with the free app, this dash cam is almost as easy as plug-and-play. If your car has an accessible OBD connector like mine does, you basically just plug one end of the cable into the camera, the other into your car’s OBD port, and stick the camera to the windshield. The free app guides you through the entire setup; from wiring it up to mounting it to setting up the connection and options. Everything worked exactly as expected for my setup and I was done in less than 30 minutes including tidying up the wire around the windshield.
I drive a Polestar 2 electric vehicle and my OBD port is below the dash by my left knee. Given that this port is accessible, the iQ dash cam was easily wired up without the need to find the car’s fuse panel, determine which fuses to use and tap into them. My car’s OBD port’s location and the shape of the iQ’s OBD connector was a challenge to fit in that snug space, but I was able to wedge it in.
Keep in mind that if you ever need to take your car in for service, they will most likely need access to your OBD port which is used by the iQ already. The technician will either unplug your dash cam (and leave it unplugged), or perhaps even complain to you about “unauthorized use of the port” and maybe even claim that your car’s warranty could be voided. To be safe, it’s best to just unplug it yourself before any automotive service appointments. Regardless, it’s still worth the massively easier installation versus wiring into your fuse panel, but you do have the option to “hard wire” it instead.
If you do need to or just want to wire up the camera to the car’s fuse panel, the iQ dash cam comes with everything you should need in the box. The wire that connects from the camera has a plug at the other end that can either connect to the OBD connector or to the hardwire (fuse box) connector. There are piggyback fuse taps provided for all popular fuse sizes so once you find the particular fuse that you want to tap into, it’s relatively easy to make the connections.
The instructions in the app recommend placing the dash cam as high up on the glass as possible on the passenger side of your rear view mirror. In case you ever need to remove the camera for access, or perhaps to remove the camera so you can later install the optional rear camera, the camera can be slid off the base that is stuck to your windshield. Since the camera slides up off the base, I recommend leaving a small gap (at least 1/2-inch) between the top of the camera mounting bracket and the top of the glass so that you can slide the camera up to remove it from the mounting bracket.
The provided cable was more than long enough to go from the passenger side of the rear view mirror across the windshield, down the A-pillar and under the dash to my car’s OBD port. In fact, I had another 2 feet of wire left over that I coiled up and tucked under the dash.
There is a small screen facing inside on the camera. During setup, this screen shows a QR code to quickly associate the camera to your account. Once it is set up, this screen shows basic information like cellular connectivity, recording status, operating mode, etc.
Usage:
After initial setup, the camera theoretically just does its job silently and in the background until you need it. The small screen that is visible from the driver’s seat will tell you when it’s recording or doing anything else of interest. This dash cam has both internal storage (microSD card) and cloud-based storage via its built-in LTE radio. Like most dash cams, it is constantly recording to the microSD card while your car is on just in case something happens. Given that the memory card has limited storage space, it does what is called “looped recording” whereby it deletes the oldest recording once it runs out of room so the latest stuff is always being stored. In case of an accident, that segment of the local video is tagged and prevented from being overwritten by the looped recording. You can also mark a recording to be kept by voice command or by pressing the button on the underside of the camera. My camera came with a 64GB microSD card but I chose to replace it with a larger card to be able to store more video before the camera needs to delete older footage to make room for newer.
Since the screen on the unit is intended only for status type information, you have to either use the app to see the recordings, or remove the microSD card and put it in another device like a tablet or a computer to see what’s on it. The is also an optional subscription service that will automatically upload those marked clips to the cloud for backup and remote access. It also allows you to view live video from the camera as long as it has cellular signal.
Another benefit of this subscription service is that if something does happen to your car while you’re not in it, your phone will get a notification and you can see the incident video or turn on the cameras to see what’s going on live. You can also trigger an “alarm” remotely which makes noise in the car to hopefully scare away anyone inside or nearby. The camera itself has some nice lighting to indicate when its motion sensors have been triggered and its recording what’s going on just in case.
The radar and g-force (bump) sensors on the camera can trigger recording not just when the camera sees movement or senses the car being bumped, but when someone is within range of your car as sensed by the radar - just in case. The optional rear camera has the same sensors, too! All video is recorded on the inserted microSD card in the highest resolution possible for each of the cameras and synced to the car’s GPS location, speed and g-force indicated at the time.
In the app, lower-resolution clips are automatically uploaded to the cloud over LTE right after they occur (if subscribed), so you can go into the app and quickly review them. These clips are clear enough to see what’s going on and you can quickly scan and switch clips, but are not in full 4k resolution because even LTE isn’t fast enough to stream live 4k video from the dash cam. Besides, most likely the full resolution video is only needed on certain clips. Anything of interest can be downloaded on-demand at full resolution (4k for the front camera, for example) if there’s something that needs to be more visually scrutinized or saved for evidence.
When viewing clips, you can see video from all cameras simultaneously and choose which of them is the larger view as you watch. An overlay is available with a map of where the car was during that clip with a line showing the car’s path and a “live” dot showing the car’s location synchronized with the video along with the car’s speed as well as the current and segment g-force readings during that clip. You can also choose one of cameras to be full screen and then swap between them while still in full screen.
The downloaded front camera clips are really clear and vibrant. The interior (cabin) video is clear and colorful during the day, and the IR-lit grayscale video at night gets all the details. I don’t yet have the rear camera, but expect that it will be great as well.
There are a bunch of enhanced security features that are not yet available but will soon enable things like geofenced notifications, notifications of overspeed events, and much more.
Conclusion:
Supremely easy to install, exceedingly fully featured, great app and a lot of promise for features to come. This dash cam will keep your car safe and secure with the peace of mind that comes from remaining connected even when you’re not there.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A modern way to bring vinyl to your home.
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
This record player’s modern aesthetic will fit into most homes. While it still has a wired output to your amp/receiver of choice, it also has high-resolution Bluetooth to listen directly via wireless headphones. For a fully-manual record player, this one is simple to use and sounds great.
Pros:
* Modern aesthetic.
* Easy to set up.
* Sounds great.
* Good wireless codecs and range.
Cons:
* Minimal dust cover doesn’t protect while playing records.
* Fully manual turntable.
* No volume control so BT headphones must have them.
* No transport controls - might expect the play/pause to at least mute the audio.
* No UI for pairing so no way to remove prior pairing or switch headphones.
Setup:
The whole unpacking experience was pretty good with recyclable materials and cloth-like bags on the various parts rather than the typical clear plastic bags. In fact, there was minimal use of styrofoam or other non-recyclable materials. The basic setup instructions are printed on the top-most cardboard and are more than enough to get completely set up but if you need more, their web site has some helpful videos.
First is placing the turntable on the base and then stretching the flat belt to reach around the motor’s spindle. This was easy to do given the removable ribbon that was wrapped around the belt. Next is placing the rubber mat on the turntable.
Now on to the needle and the arm. Slide the needle cartridge onto the arm and rotate the lock to hold it on. I thought that the whole red plastic big was to be removed, but most of it stays on the cartridge and only the small bit covering the needle must be removed. Next slide the counterweight on the end of the arm.
The last part of the physical setup is placing the 45 spindle adapter onto its home spot and ensuring that all packing material is removed.
This record player can connect wirelessly to Bluetooth devices like headphones or speakers as well as wired to an amp or similar. I have a whole-home Sonos setup with a Sonos AMP in the den that is connected to a pair of B&W bookshelf speakers. I decided to plug the record player into the Sonos AMP’s line-in jack so I can use it as a source for the whole Sonos system. The provided stereo RCA cable is really nice and was more than long enough to reach to the Sonos AMP’s input jacks. There is a grounding wire on the provided cable which can connect to the grounding screw on the back on the turntable, but my AMP didn’t have anywhere to attach it so I left it unused for now.
I made sure that the switch on the back of the record player was set to “Line” for my AMP (versus the default setting of “Phono”) and there is also a switch to choose whether the turntable automatically stops spinning when the arm is at the end of the side which was already set for Auto-Stop. That was it for the basic portion of the setup.
Usage:
I’m a vinyl novice as it’s been a good 30 years since I last played a record. Using this record player is pretty straightforward, though - there’s a single button on the front to turn it on or off and choose whether the audio goes wired (white) or wireless (blue). To play a record, everything is manual except for the turntable spinning when the arm is over the record and stopped when the arm is back toward its dock (or at the end of a side if the Auto-Stop switch is enabled). After putting a record on the platter, you have to raise the arm, rotate it into place, then lower it down all by hand.
There is a lever to raise and lower the arm off the record, but then you still have to rotate the arm and place it either on the record or back on its dock. Other record players have automatic arm movements and can even store more records queued up for play, but this unit is fully manual which is OK - less to break ;-).
Going wired to my Sonos AMP was easy and sounded great both locally through my AMP’s bookshelf speakers and when shared around my home via Sonos. Since this record player also has a Hi-Res BT transmitter, I thought I’d also pair up my old Sennheiser over-the-ear BT headphones. Turn on the headphones and put them in Bluetooth pairing mode, then turn on the record player. The player’s light ring blinks blue while it searches for a device to connect to. I noticed a few other nearby devices showed the Victorola as wanting to pair, but after a bit of a wait, it connected to my headphones automatically and showed a solid blue light for a short while before turning solid white again.
Listening via Bluetooth headphones was a simple and liberating experience. Once paired, you just turn on the record player and headphones, load up your favorite record and start listening. One concern to be aware of is that the record player has absolutely no controls or settings for Bluetooth aside from turning it on or off. Even the volume must be controlled from the listening device (headphones or BT speaker), and most modern headphones don’t have volume controls. Fortunately, my headphone do have volume buttons, but if your headphones don’t, you’ll be listening to your records at one volume which probably won’t be to your liking. It goes without saying that none of the usual buttons on Bluetooth headphones for track control will work; no play/pause, skip, etc… It would have been nice if the record player could stop and resume the audio with the headphone’s play/pause function, but it’s basically like plugging in a set of wired headphones that are just just head-mounted speakers and nothing else.
I did get some good wireless distance with my headphones and they sounded great with the record player’s high-res audio codecs. Since this is a single-disc manual turntable, you’ll probably get about 30 minutes of wireless listening before you have to return to the player to switch records anyway so you probably won’t venture too far away.
You can pair several headphones or BT speakers to this record player, but since there is no user interface on it, you basically just have to turn off one paired device to connect to or pair with another. There’s no ability to switch between paired devices or unpair a device, but it gets the job done.
The provided minimal dust cover doesn’t store on the unit or protect it when you’re playing a record. It only covers the platter and the arm and must be stored elsewhere while you’re listening. When you’re done listening and have put away your record and docked the arm, it’s a simple matter to turn off the record player with the power button on the front and then place the dust cover back on.
There is a speed control knob for 45/78 rpm, a settings control for anti-skating, and the provided counterbalance weight can be repositioned. Nothing much to it.
Conclusion:
Simplicity, flexibility in listening either wired or wireless, and great sound. All this plus a great modern look bring old-school vinyl to the modern era.

Every-Day Protection with Funky Style
on October 20, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
First and foremost, this case provides every-day protection against bumps and casual drops up to around 8 feet. Add to that unique styles and colors and full MagSafe compatibility, and you’ve got a supremely fun, protective and functional case for your iPhone.
Pros:
* Snug no-sag fit.
* Protects most buttons.
* Rubberized sides for easy grip.
* Slim raised lip for screen protection.
* Slim raised camera bump lip for lens protection.
* Strong magnets for MagSafe compatibility.
* Cool transparent back with a funky printed pattern.
* Holes to attach a lanyard or phone charms.
* Protects from up to 8’ drops.
Cons:
* Increases phone weight by nearly 25% (273g with case versus 221g without case)
* Doesn’t protect the Action button.
* Odd cut-outs around the protected buttons.
* Warranty is OK but not as good as other brands.
Installation:
There’s not really much to it. Slide your phone into the case for a snug fit. All buttons are protected except for the Action button and there are cutouts for the speaker grilles and the USB-C port. Once installed, the edges fit nicely and don’t bow out or sag.
There are a pair of holes near the power button to allow for attachment of phone charms or a lanyard. Of course, if you want to take advantage of that, install your choice before attaching the case.
Fit and Usage:
The back portion of the case is a tad thicker than others which provides good protection for the phone and also allows for a slimmer raised camera lip that protrudes less yet still protect the cameras. The cutout for the USB-C port is big enough to fit every USB-C cable that I tried.
The inside of the edges has ribbed rubberized material to protect the phone from drops, but this case is more of an every-day drop protector and is not for extreme drops. It is rated for drops up to around 8 feet which is more than enough from sitting or standing positions, but I’d still be careful dropping it off a balcony or anything like that.
The MagSafe compatible magnet ring is strong and works great with every MagSafe-compatible stand and charger that I tried. It also has the orientation line so that if your MagSafe charger or stand supports it, the case will stay rotationally aligned.
The edges of the case rise up just a bit past an unprotected screen and wrap over onto the screen just a bit. If you’re using a screen protector, make sure that it leaves enough room around the edges for the case. The screen protector that I have installed fits perfectly with this case, but others may not.
This case is relatively thin and light yet is still rated to provide enough protection for up to an 8 foot drop. If you need more than that, you’ll probably want a case that is thicker and heavier. Most of the phone’s buttons are well-protected and easy to find and press except for the Action button which is recessed but not covered at all. There is an odd cut-out both above and below each covered button that perhaps is to allow for the buttons to be more easily pressed?
Next to the power button is a pair of holes to allow for attachment of a lanyard or phone charms on a string. Be sue to attach it before installing your phone and you’ll be good to go.
This model of case is completely transparent with a funky printed design on the outside. In between the designs, your phone’s color shines through. Since the design is printed on the case, it might susceptible to scrapes and scratches, but the phone will be fine. For me, it’s the best of both worlds in that it adds a cool funky pattern to the phone while still allowing the phone’s design to be clearly visible.
One thing that is a tad disappointing is the warranty. It’s definitely good enough for anything that might come up soon, but only covers the first 6 months. It is very well-made so hopefully a longer warranty isn’t really necessary.
Conclusion:
Every-day protection from scratches and up to 8 foot drops while adding funky cool style to your phone. All while adding minimal size and weight and maintaining MagSafe compatibility. This case has it all!

Elevated Protection with High Style
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
Some people like using their phones without a case to keep it as sleek and light as possible. Others prefer their phone to have more protection and style. If that’s you, this case excels at both. It provides more than enough protection to keep your phone safe from most of what life throws at it while adding a cool iridescent flair. Plus, it keeps your phone MagSafe compatible with the case on.
Pros:
* Snug no-sag fit.
* Protects all buttons.
* Ribbed sides for easy grip.
* Raised lip for screen protection.
* Raised camera bump lip for lens protection.
* Strong magnets for MagSafe compatibility.
* Cool translucence with an iridescent shimmer.
* Protects from up to 13’ drops.
* Relatively light-weight at 48g.
* Great limited lifetime warranty.
Cons:
* Increases phone weight by nearly 25% (269g with case versus 221g without case)
* Odd cut-outs under the buttons.
Installation:
There’s not really much to it. Slide your phone into the case for a snug fit. All buttons are protected and there are cutouts for the speaker grilles and the USB-C port. Once installed, the edges fit nicely and don’t bow out or sag.
Fit and Usage:
This case has a raised lip around the camera bump to keep them safer when the phone is resting on its back. There are also two small raised bumps at the bottom corners of the case to keep the bottom of edge of the case from getting too scratched up. The cutout for the USB-C port is big enough to fit every USB-C cable that I tried.
The ZAGG XTR3 screen protector that I also use fits perfectly with this case, but others may not.
This case is relatively thin and light yet is still rated to provide enough protection for up to a 13 foot drop. If you need more than that, you’ll probably want a case that is thicker and heavier. All of the phone’s buttons are well-protected and easy to find and press, but there is an odd cut-out under each that I haven’t figure out the reason for. Perhaps its to allow for the buttons to be more easily pressed?
This model of case is frosted and translucent to let the color and design of your phone shine through. There is an iridescent shimmer to it that changes color as the light angle changes. For me, it’s the best of both worlds in that it adds a cool color to the phone while still allowing the phone’s design to be visible.
As with most ZAGG products, there’s a great limited lifetime warranty if you need it.
Conclusion:
Protection from scratches and up to 13 foot drops while adding high style to your phone. All while adding minimal size and weight and maintaining MagSafe compatibility. This case has it all!

Invisible Protection that’s Easy to Install
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
The glass on modern iPhones is incredibly tough but not impossible to scratch or break. A high-quality screen protector will not only keep your phone’s screen pristine while you use it, but it will also protect your investment if you ever want to trade the phone in or sell it to upgrade later. This ZAGG XTR3 screen protector is not only incredibly easy to install but once installed, it just disappears and makes you completely forget it’s there guarding your screen against scratches and damage.
Pros:
* Incredibly easy to install with pristine results and no bubbles.
* Edge-to-edge protection.
* Feels like the original glass for touch and swipes.
* Invisible protection.
* Leaves just enough room at the edges for most cases.
* Additional blue-light filtering for eye protection.
* Lifetime warranty if it ever breaks or scratches.
Cons:
* Adds a bit of thickness that may make it protrude from some cases.
* Slight adjustments needed to use the iOS “scroll to top” gesture.
If you’re like me, you value your iPhone enough to want to keep its screen as pristine as possible. Nobody likes a scratched or broken screen, so a good quality screen protector is essential. Not all screen protectors are equivalent, and while a cheap one might seem like it’s better than nothing, a high-quality one will install easily and virtually disappear while guarding your screen from day-to-day use and damage.
Installation:
Even if you’ve installed a screen protector before, the process can seem a bit scary. A botched install can last for the life of having it on your phone and be a constant reminder that your screen is covered with something. This ZAGG screen protector comes with everything you need for an easy and flawless installation. There’s a tray to hold your phone in place and keep the screen protector perfectly aligned before it is installed. Additional supplies are provided to clean the screen and remove any dust that might get trapped under the screen protector. Online videos are available if you need more instruction and reassurance, but the basics are printed in the box and that’s probably enough for most people.
First, take off any case that might be installed and place your phone in the tray. It only fits one way and centers perfectly. Then wipe the screen with the cleaning pad to get any smudges or residue off so that the screen is perfectly clean before applying the protector. Then dab the sticky pad all over the cleaned screen to ensure that no dust is left over to get trapped under the glass.
The final step is to peel off the protective film from the phone-side of the glass and align the holes on the glass’s top-side protective film with the posts on the tray. It only fits one way so you can’t mess up (provided you put the exposed glass facing the phone’s screen ;-) ). With the glass protector suspended above the cleaned phone screen, just press the middle of the glass with one finger and the glass gently adheres to the screen from the center and spreads out until it is adhered to the phone.
Once the glass is adhered to your phone’s screen, remove the top protective film and remove your phone from the tray. That’s it! With my installation, there were no bubbles to wipe away, but if there were, you just gently guide them to the edge of the glass.
I’ve installed screen protectors on my last 5 phones and this by far was the easiest to get a pristine application. Flimsy plastic screen protectors seem to be more susceptible to getting bubbles trapped under the film so I prefer glass screen protectors. Plus, the glass ones feel more like you’re not using your phone through a protector.
Fit and Usage:
This glass screen protector covers my iPhone 15 Pro Max’s face from edge-to-edge with no notches or cut-outs. The top of the glass ends just before the earpiece and all edges are nicely rounded for a smooth touch if you glide your finger across the edge onto the glass. By the way, if you use the iOS gesture where you tap the top-most edge of the screen to “scroll to top” of a list, since the top edge of the screen protector covers that area partially, you just have to get used to tapping the edge of the screen protector instead of tapping the flat glass. Once you get used to this, it’s no big deal.
The glass itself is supposedly treated to reduce blue light emissions from the screen and enhance the colors of the screen. I don’t know if I can tell a difference, but the screen 100% looks at least as good as it did without the screen protector installed. There is no distortion, bubble or haziness. The feel of tapping and swiping is the same as doing so on the original phone screen glass.
The edges of the screen protector are inset just a bit from the absolute edge of the screen’s original glass. This allows for cases that might wrap around the edge of the phone so the glass doesn’t interfere with the case.
Something to be aware of is that this glass screen protector does add just a bit of extra thickness to the phone. This is relatively meaningless if you’re not using a case, but if your case has raised edges designed to keep the screen from touching the table when flipped over with the screen facing down, the extra thickness of the screen protector might make it protrude just enough to negate that little bit of lip from the case. This probably won’t matter to most but just be aware of it.
Conclusion:
This all-glass screen protector is very easy to install perfectly. Once installed, it virtually disappears from view and you forget that a screen protector is installed. It just does its job of keeping your screen pristine without constantly reminding you that it’s there. In the event you ever do have a problem with the screen protector or it gets damaged, ZAGG has a great lifetime warranty to replace it. Overall, this screen protector fits and installs perfectly. I couldn’t ask for more.

High-quality cable goes the distance
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
This high-quality USB-C cable is longer than most at 10 feet long, supports fast charging speeds at up to 60W, and allows up to full USB-2 data transfer speeds at up to 480Mbs. Depending on your charging and/or data transfer needs, this cable will meet or exceed them. Just be sure to compare the specs of the cable with your specific device’s capabilities so you get the speeds and power you need while using it.
Pros:
* Long cable reaches much further than most pack-in cables that are 1m (3 feet).
* High-quality braided cable.
* Slim metal overmolding.
* Nice rubber cable tie that remains attached when not in use.
* Supports up to 60W of charging power.
* Supports up to 480Mbps of data transfer speed.
Cons:
* No cons- just be aware of the specs for the devices you’ll use it with.
Not all USB-C cables are appropriate for every use. USB-C cables have maximum ratings that support certain levels of charging power and data transfer speeds. To ensure that your cable meets your device’s maximum requirements, you need to know what’s what. For example, this cable supports high-speed charging at up to 60W when connected to a suitable power source and a device that can accept at least that much power. It also supports data transfer speeds up to 480Mbs (USB-2) speeds between devices that also accept such speeds. That’s not to say that any device used with this cable will charge at the full 60W, etc… It all depends on what stuff you’re connecting with the cable.
Like many, I recently upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro series phone that now has USB-C. An iPhone 15 Pro will charge up at a max of around 20W when the power is supplied by a charger that puts out at least 20W. This cable will support the maximum charging rate of this phone (20W) when plugged in to a suitable power adapter but won’t charge at the full 60W with this cable no matter how big a USB power adapter is connected. The same phone can transfer data at up to 10Gbps but this cable is rated only up to 480Mbs (about 1/20th of the max speed possible with a faster cable), so you’ll be limited to the same slower 480Mbs speed the older iPhones had.
So for use with an iPhone 15 Pro series phone, this cable is overkill but will work fine for charging at max speed but you won’t see the faster data transfers that the phone is capable of. Depending on your needs, this may be enough. In fact, if you’re going to use this cable mostly for charging, the cable’s 60W max rating will charge most devices really quickly. For devices that don’t need power greater than 60W or speeds faster than 480Mbs, this cable will be more than great.
Just be aware of the speeds and power needs of what you plug in to make sure that any cable does what you need. This one is a really nice, high-quality cable for anything that it supports.

Performance Boost and Comfort for Mobile Gaming
on October 8, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
Mobile gaming on a smartphone has almost completely replaced portable gaming consoles. The games are fun and the graphics and gameplay rival the best consoles, but smartphones aren’t comfortable to hold for long gaming sessions and touching the screen isn’t the same as mashing buttons or thumbing a joystick.
This Turtle Beach Atom is like a traditional game console controller split in half and designed to attach to your smartphone to basically turn it into a powerful mobile gaming console. The two halves are wirelessly connected together with low-latency wireless and the pair pairs to your phone via Bluetooth. Each half clamps to and of your phone and when assembled, is much more comfortable to hold and much easier to game with.
Pros:
* Very comfortable to hold for long gaming sessions.
* Very lightweight so minimal additional heft to your phone.
* The two halves are pre-linked together via low-latency wireless.
* The two halves pair easily to your phone via Bluetooth as one device.
* All of the expected buttons in the right places with great button feel.
* Both halves nest together for more compact storage.
* Long battery life.
* Tons of compatible games.
* Both halves turn off automatically when docked together.
* Both halves charge off one USB-C cable connection.
Cons:
* Have to remember to turn on each half independently - auto-on would be nice when separated.
* The charging status LED is on opposite sides of the controllers when docked, so you can’t see both without flipping the docked set around.
* Barely fits a Pro Max iPhone with the thinnest of cases.
* The controller status/configuration app isn’t designed for larger iPhones.
Setup:
First-time setup couldn’t be much easier. With the two parts docked together as they come out of the box, just plug in the single USB-C cable and wait for them to charge fully. When docked, they magnetically stick together and charge together. There is a status LED on each half that turns green when each is charged. These LEDs are on the bottom edge of each half which is convenient when they are attached to your phone. However, when charging them, the controllers are inverted and stacked so that these LEDs are now on opposite sides while they’re being charged. This means that while charging, you kinda have to flip the whole thing around to see both lights on opposite sides of the docked set. Not a huge deal, but it would have been more convenient to have the lights visible from the same side while the pair is being charged. Either way, it’s still great that you can charge the pair with a single cable.
Once both halves are charged, unplug the cable and separate them. You can’t turn them on when docked which is great so they don’t turn on and discharge when docked for storage. Turn on each half by holding the Home button to power on the left half and the Menu button to turn on the right half. The two halves pair to each other automatically, so you just have to pair the combined “controller” to your iPhone. Once on, press the Bluetooth button to put the controller in pairing mode and do the usual on your phone to connected to it. That’s it - done!
You can install the optional App from Turtle Beach to upgrade the controller’s firmware, check each half’s battery status, check and adjust the various dead zones, etc…
Now is time to mount the controller to your phone. I have a huge iPhone 15 Pro Max with an ultra-thin case installed. Each half of the controller has a spring-loaded clamp to hold your phone in place, but your phone has to fit within the edges of the case. My huge phone just barely fit, but smaller phones will probably fit fine. If needed, the controller came with optional rubber pads of two different thicknesses to better hold onto thinner phones or those not in cases. I wouldn’t say that it’s quick and easy to slide the controllers onto your phone, but you get used to it and provided you don’t pull them apart while gaming, they stay on pretty solidly.
Usage:
With the controller docked together for storage, just pull them apart to get ready to game. They don’t turn on automatically, but they do turn off automatically when re-docked at the end of your gaming session. Slide each end onto your phone and make sure the ends are secured in place. Then hold the Home and Menu buttons to turn each half on. They’ll reconnect to each other and then to your phone. Start your favorite game and play away!
The contoured grips felt much more comfortable to hold while gaming than holding just the phone itself. The buttons are in the same arrangement that you’re used to from console gaming and everything is within reach. Battery life is rated at about 20 hours of play time which is amazing given how lightweight they are.
I play several of the compatible games for hours and found that the controllers made my phone much easier to hold and way easier to control. Again, be careful not to pull them outward to separate them as they will easily pull off your phone and you could end up dropping your phone. I had no issues with slight twisting of the controllers while really getting into the game, but be mindful that the two halves are only attached to your phone by spring-loaded clamps.
When you’re done gaming, just pull off each half, invert and dock them together again. They’ll magnetically attach to each other and both halves will turn off automatically. Pop the pair in the provided travel bag or plug them in to charge for next time.
Overall:
If you enjoy mobile gaming sessions longer than 15 minutes or are tired of tapping the screen to play, this mobile gaming controller for iPhones is totally worth it. Not only does it make holding your phone for gaming a ton more comfortable, but the physical buttons make playing the game that much more fun and more like a standard console. The only things I noted that needed improvement were small things to make it that much better, but nothing prevents me from recommending it. Provided your phone fits (most will as long as they’re not both the largest phone in a thick case), this controller will turn your smartphone into a competitive mobile console.

All-Around Great Performers
on September 28, 2023
Posted by: gadgeTT
True wireless earbuds are truly mainstream now. You can get a usable set on the cheap or can splurge for super fancy buds. These Jabra Elite 10 are at the top-end of the spectrum for features and sound quality but are a better value than some of their competitors. They not only sound great with powerful active noise canceling, but also have Dolby Atmos spacial audio with head tracking. Battery life is good and comfort is exceptional.
Pros:
* Great fit (at least for my ears).
* Great sound.
* Great battery life with fast charge capability.
* Really good ANC.
* Really good call quality.
* Stay put in my ears without needing “wings.”
* Charging case charges wirelessly or by USB-C.
* Comfortable for longer wearing sessions.
* Tactile buttons (not capacitive).
Cons:
* Questionable longevity of the soft-touch rubber coating on the buds.
* Mutes rather than pauses music during HearThrough transparency mode.
* Head tracking can be awkward for music but can be turned off via the app.
Setup:
Bluetooth pairing of true wireless earbuds has gotten faster and easier in general, but these earbuds were really simple to pair to my iPhone. Just install the Jabra Headphones+ app, then choose to add your new earbuds. The app quickly finds and pairs both the conventional Bluetooth (for audio) and the BluetoothLE (for control of features). Most wireless earbuds allow pairing to multiple devices but can only connect to one at a time and you have to disconnect from one to reconnect to another. These buds have the more rare multipoint capability so you can connect them to two devices at the same time such as your phone and tablet. Watch movies on your tablet and take a call from your phone without having to switch the connection!
The app has a ton of useful features including setting the EQ, redefining how the buttons work, updating firmware, etc… Overall, super easy and comprehensive. I don’t have an Android phone to compare, but they supposedly pair just as easily and work just as well on those devices.
Usage:
Let’s start with the ubiquitous charging case. It’s just a tad larger than the smallest cases that I’ve seen from competitive models in this price range, but overall it’s really compact and easy to carry. It has rounded corners that are comfortable to hold and won’t poke you awkwardly when put in a tight pocket. The lid and back are flat so you can rest it on a table on its back or sit it upside down on its lid if you’d prefer.
The lid opens easily and snaps closed with an authoritative magnetic click. Getting the buds out of the case is easy enough since they protrude far enough from the case to grab. Snapping them back in the case is easy, and their soft-touch coating makes them almost feel like they’re smoothly sinking into the case rather than snapping in.
Charging the case (and the buds inside) is fast and easy on USB-C or any compatible wireless charging pad. As has been the norm lately, there is a single dual-color LED on the outside of the case to indicate charging status. Green for charged and amber/red for discharged. This is good enough for most everyone who isn’t color blind and the app also has a status display for each bud and the case itself if you need it.
The buds are very compact and discrete when worn and nestle in my ear comfortably. Their battery life isn’t much longer than the competition, but I definitely find them so comfortable in my ears that I can wear them for their full battery life without worry. When it comes time to take them out, they’ll fast charge in the case if you pop them in for a few minutes or longer.
The outside of each bud is a soft-touch coating that helps keep them in place without the need for “wings” or other parts. I am a bit concerned about the longevity of this material, though, and many of my other products with a similar soft-touch coating tend to get sticky after a few years of use. We’ll just have to see…
The buttons on each bud work really well and unlike most of their competitors, these are actual tactile buttons that are pressed rather than capacitive touch surfaces. Not only are they easier to find without accidental activation, but they also work better with gloved or wet hands.
Performance:
There are 3 main audio categories that I consider for earbuds; how they sound for music and movies, how good their active noise canceling is, and how good they sound on the other end during voice calls. These buds are really at the top end in all three categories. Keep in mind that I did not do a scientific evaluation and my comments are purely subjective based on my hearing and listening preferences.
Music and Movies… A nice flat response out of the box with good bass and crisp treble. My favorite genre of music is 80’s New Wave (Eurythmics, New Order, Depeche Mode, Lightening Seeds, 10,000 Maniacs, etc.) but I like just about anything to a degree. Everything that I threw at these buds sounded great but tweaking the EQ in the app made things just pop a little more. By the way, the app also has some built-in ambient sound modes so you can pop in these buds, turn on ANC and play some soothing ocean waves but the sound is coming from the Headphones+ app.
I personally don’t like surround processing when listening to music, but for movies, this is a greatly-appreciated feature. The included Dolby Atmos with optional head tracking works really well and makes watching movies on your tablet more immersive. Pair that with the great noise cancelling and you have a movie theater experience wherever you go. You can also have spatial audio without head tracking to suit your preferences. It’s a little less immersive when watching stuff on a phone, but works just the same. For most music listening, I find that spacial audio doesn’t really work well for me since it’s based on your head’s position relative to the device and most people don’t listen to music while facing their phone… but if you do, these buds have you covered!
Noise Canceling… The adaptive noise canceling (ANC) is the best Jabra has ever offered in true wireless earbuds. I wouldn’t call it the best available in a true wireless earbud overall, but it’s really good. I haven’t been on a plane with them, but they work great for general home/office noise and public transit background noise. The left bud button is set up to toggle between ANC and their “HearThrough” transparency mode. I really like having that single press switch between ANC and transparency and you can customize it to your liking. The one thing I don’t like about it is that you have the option to mute but not pause the audio when HearThrough is on. For example, if you’re listing to a podcast and tap that button to briefly talk to someone nearby, it mutes the podcast and lets in the outside audio, but when you’re done and switch back to ANC, the podcast was playing silently the whole time and you’ve missed a lot. I’d rather it pause the music than mute it. By the way, if you take either bud out of your ear instead, it will actually pause the playback and turn on HearThrough for the bud that’s left in your ear which is great and maybe better than leaving them both in your ears and activating HearThrough.
Voice Calls… For voice calls, there’s great wind cancellation and voice isolation that makes your voice sounds clear on the other end of the call. If you’re going to be on a LOT of calls (video or audio-only), there might be better options like a full headset with a boom microphone, but for the occasional voice call or video chat, these earbuds work better than most and are more than good enough to be heard loud and clear.
Overall:
These Jabra Elite 10 earbuds have it all; great sound quality for music, movie, games and voice calls, great active noise cancellation and great battery life in the buds and the case. Dolby Atmos spacial audio with head tracking works great for movies and games and the app is easy to use and fully-featured. They are easy to pair, easy to configure and easy to handle with a compact case and slim buds in your ear. They are supremely comfortable to wear for hours on end and don’t feel like they’re going to fall out. There are few small concerns but overall, they are truly great all-around performers that measure up to the top-tier available.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Where can I buy a replacement battery? How much does the replacement battery cost?

The internal battery is not replaceable by the customer. You have to remove the whole doorbell from the mounting bracket using the supplied metal "key", bring it inside and plug it in to recharge it... about every 2-3 months.

Plus, create searchable/editable PDFs with the included bonus software. Do it all with zero subscription fees. Featuring smart technology, this scanner learns from each receipt scanned ̶ recognizing more data and logos over time, ensuring receipts and invoices are accurately converted and categorized. And, it’s all done on your own device, giving you complete control over your data, where it’s stored and how it is used. It’s the easy, cost effective way to organize and manage your finances.

Does it extract receipt information into software that can be sent to quickbooks online?

It claims to, although I'm not a QuickBooks user so I cannot verify. The box clearly states that it does this, tough.

Has anyone been able to get the game/chat balancer working properly? I have looked everywhere for a solid solution and have not been able to get it working or find a working example. the game/chat balancer for me makes ALL sounds quieter or louder.

As near as I can tell, this balances the audio between the TOSLINK (optical) input on the USB puck and the audio coming from the USB connection. If you're not using the TOSLINK input, then the switch will basically be useless. Hope this helps.
