What All Flossers Should Be
on June 29, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
I am very biased towards all Sonicare line of Philips products. I have never been disappointed. They’re simple to use. They are very effective. And it’s probably the most recommended brand by dentists. This Sonicare flosser is no exception.
Flossing is good, but water flossing is the holy grail. It has been shown in clinical trials many times over that it not only cleans your teeth, but also protects and strengthens your gums, preventing gingivitis, for instance. This flosser works great with either nozzle. I had used this type before, so I had no problem with it, but for first timers, please be aware that you could spill water everywhere, including your bathroom mirror and clothes. The good news is that once you get used to it, you will probably never think of flossing any other way.
I do like that you can stop/start the flow using just the wand. That’s a handy feature, especially for newbies. Previous types I used, required to reach out to the main unit where the water tank is. Not this Sonicare model.
Maybe I could say a lot more, like how clean my mouth feels, and so on, but it is Sonicare. If you know this brand, you know it is worth more than the money you pay.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Compactness with Good Audio
on June 29, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
Pairing them to my phone was quick and easy. Sound is better than most in this category although nothing to impress an audiophile like me. Still, it is the type that I feel comfortable to wear during a walk without being too concerned about them falling on the concrete and costing and an arm and a leg to replace.
It is rated as low latency and it delivers it. It synced well with video conferences and a couple of games. As for active noise canceling (ANC), it works, but again, it is not very impressive. For walks like I do daily, it is adequate, especially because it still allows me to be aware of my surroundings. Here is where I prefer this not-so-efficient ANC device to others. It is nice to use the feature when all you want and need to hear is music, but when outdoors, you should be able to hear when a vehicle or other threats are coming towards you. This JVC ANC feature is balanced in that regards: it cancels some of the noise but not all of it.
Here are the pros:
• Design looks a lot better than previous models.
• Compact
• Fits well in ears. Just keep in mind that different ears may have different experiences. Mine are very sensitive and it still felt comfortable and never fell off.
• Lightweight
• USB-C, instead of mini-USB or proprietary connection
And the cons:
• So-so ANC
• Sound is good, but not excellent. This is subjective and I admit that I’m too picky when it comes to audio.
My rating is based on my experience and the category I would place these earphones in. I’m not comparing them to higher-end buds, but I would still recommend them to a friend who didn’t want to spend a lot more money, or for those who want to take these on walks and light workouts.

Attractive Look with A Major Downside
on June 22, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
I would usually start with how hard or easy it was to set up, but this stand is just plug and play. Interestingly, the aluminum body matches my laptop perfectly. Sturdy and smudge-proof, it exceeded my expectations in that regard.
As to functionality, it does add three USB-A ports, two card readers, an audio, and a USB-C port, which is just giving it back the one used to connect it to your laptop. All the ports are USB 3.1, which are fast enough for most modern peripherals at speeds of 5 Gbps.
Fortunately, my laptop has two USB-C ports. One I use to charge it and the other to connect compatible peripherals such as this stand. I got no extra USB-C ports, and if my laptop had only one, the Satechi Monitor Stand would become useless every time I needed to charge the battery. It would have been better if the stand would connect directly to power and provide a USB-C to charge the laptop and/or other peripherals. And while at it, add an HDMI or DP port for a second monitor, especially because it doesn’t support USB-C monitors either.
I was looking for something similar, as I need more ports, but the limitations mentioned here are enough to make me feel disappointed. I realize that more than a stand with some ports, I need flexibility. This stand can’t give that to me.
If I were to rate the body construction only, I would give it five stars, not only for its sturdiness, but also for his sleek design. But overall, I can’t honestly give it more than three stars, keeping in mind that it does add some fast USB-A ports, and card readers for those whose laptop doesn’t come with one already.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good Performance and Aesthetically Pleasing
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
It was tricky to find the power button. As usual, I try before I read the manual, which was just a small guide that it would have taken less than a minute to read through. It’s not only easy to see once you know where it is, but it is also a fingerprint reader that surprisingly worked without flaws. It’s nice to press the power button and see the laptop recognize who you are and log on to your profile. And all that happens very quickly.
When it comes to design, Dell is getting close to Apple’s, although they have a different approach. Instead of trying to “cool”, Dell focuses on aesthetics, which is more appealing to me. This laptop is big, which is great for work although not so much for portability, but it is aesthetically pleasing with its aluminum finish. I haven’t tried to scratch it, but at least I can see that the chassis doesn’t get smudgy easily.
The size can be a blessing and a curse. I use it in tablet mode for drawing. For some types of graphics works, it is a good size, especially if you don’t have a bigger Surface Studio-like touch screen, which is considerably expensive. It worked well, using a Surface pen. The only drawback is that it’s a bit heavy to carry. Still, I see myself doing that often just because of the extra real estate to draw graphics on the go. And if you want to use to it to watch something while it’s in a tablet mode, you have a great size screen for that.
Bright and responsive touch screen, but I notice in the beginning that something was bugging me. I couldn’t tell exactly what it was. The screen somewhat looked like it was washed out, but it was not unpleasing and at the same time, it was very clear. I only figured out what it was when I saw the TUVRheinland logo printed next to the trackpad. The hardware produces a low blue light. As you probably know, screen blue lights not only cause eye fatigue, but also affect the body’s circadian rhythm, which is responsible for a good night's sleep. A huge health issue addressed by Dell. Here’s hoping other mobile device manufacturers adopt that. Be assured that although I was intrigued at first, it actually makes the screen look better and has a subtle calming effect.

It could have a dedicated numeric pad, but I don’t miss that. The trackpad is huge but it’s useful and responsive, and does not get in the way, even when your wrists rest on them. The speakers are better than the ones that come with average laptops. Just don’t plan on throwing a party using only its speakers.
USB-C is the future. Dell included two USB-C ports, including Thunderbolt 4. This type of port can get rid of most cables. A compatible external monitor, for instance, needs only one cable for power, video, and data. This laptop charges using one of those ports. But because there are still too many USB-A devices out there, Dell didn’t forget to include a couple of them as well, plus and HDMI port for your TV or older monitors.
While I never worked without being connected to power for longer than 4 hours, the remaining battery charge was always between 47 and 51% percent. Thus, I’m guessing that you could use it for 8 hours or more with one charge, depending on what you were doing with it. But again, I can’t say for sure without testing that.
Excellent camera, good graphics, with a modern Intel i5 processor, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) makes this a great choice for most types of work. I will use it for some graphics drawing, but for video and heavy photography editing that I need to do sometimes, you would do better with an i7 processor, even if it was a smaller laptop. A higher resolution screen and a 120Hz display would be useful too. But this model is not intended for that purpose, so my rating is based on what I intend to use it for.

Great Size and Fast Response
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
If you don’t have Carplay or Google Car prebuilt in your vehicle, and you are stuck with a small phone screen, which depends on cell coverage, this Tom Tom GPS won’t let you down. The screen size is decent, and it works even where there is no Wi-Fi or cellphone coverage. When Wi-Fi and internet are available, it updates its offline maps and gas price information, so you can rely on it even in the middle of nowhere.
My experience with it has been mostly pleasant. It’s very responsive, with a clean and crisp screen. You know exactly on what lanes you need to be on roads and bridges with lots of turns and exists, such as in Portland Oregon where some bridges split into 4 or more different directions. Tom Tom will show you in advance which one to take, so you have a bit of time to change lanes as needed. The pictures make it very clear.
What I liked the least was the limitation of voice commands. Maybe I’m used to always connected GPS systems that probably process commands online and thus allows you to use a much wider vocabulary than you can with this one, but I felt it was limited in that respect.
They do recommend turning your phone hotspot on all the time. In some ways, it does depend on that to keep maps and other information current, although you can do most updates using your home Wi-Fi before you hit the road. The good news is that if you have no cell phone coverage, it will work with its offline database. Even if you only drive where there is coverage, the bigger dedicated screen of the Tom Tom Discover is a lot more comfortable to use.
The included mount is adjustable enough to work on any windshield, and the cord to keep it charged is long enough to plug to either a USB port or to the lighter adaptor. During the two trips that I used it, I had no issues whatsoever. It was a lot more fun than using a phone and to an extent, I kind of liked it better than the built-in GPS in my other car, which has a bigger screen but a so-so navigation system, which I rarely use because it’s frustrating. If it didn’t support CarPlay, this Tom Tom would replace it too. I really like it.
I would recommend it, even with the voice command limitation, which you can get over very quickly. You just need to remember that you’re not talking to Siri, Google, Alexa, or other digital assistants. It’s not even fair to remove a star from my review just because of that, considering how good it is in my opinion.

Good Value for its Category
on June 21, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
Microphone sounds decent enough. People I tested it with said it was very clear and I don’t expect much more than that when I’m playing games. What I do care a lot about is the sound experience and the Corsair HS65 did not let me down although it did not impress me too much. But at this price point, I would be still digging to find out what was wrong with it if it performed any better.
I’m very picky about sound quality, although I tend to be forgiving depending on what I’m listening to. When playing games, for instance, I don’t really care about nuances if it’s clear and keeps me immersed in the game. The HS65 did provide clarity although not as much as some higher-end headsets but I felt immersed.
Another thing that really matters to me is comfort. Playing games can take hours sometimes and it should not be pain ever. What I didn’t like was that it felt tight on my head very quickly. Although the cushions were very comfortable, the headband was not so much. Maybe it was my set or maybe my head is bigger than I admit (other family members didn’t agree it was uncomfortable), but I wish there was a way to make it more comfortable for me. I’ve had headsets that were too loose, and they soon became useless. I just wanted it to be somewhere in-between. To be honest and fair, the headset is very light, so it did not feel too bad.
As to setting up, it was just plug and play for my PS5 and the PC adaptor works well. You can experience the 7.1 Dolby surround sound, which will please any non-audiophile

High Bandwidth and Performance
on June 20, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
If everybody’s experience is similar to mine, Deco AX4300 must be one of – if not - the easiest Wi-Fi Mesh system to set up. I got the three units working in less than 10 minutes, including setting up PPoE, which is supported. The package says it supports ALL internet providers but Lumen (a.k.a. CenturyLink) uses a tagged VLAN and I’ve owned high-end systems that didn’t support it. That alone puts it among the best in the market. Its relatively small size makes it blend anywhere, especially because it does have any visible external antennas.
My house is fairly large with over 83 devices on the home network. Nothing but a good mesh system works well. Extenders don’t cut it as they tend to cause performance and roaming issues that I can’t afford, especially because I produce some specialized videos and HD imaging and I need high bandwidth to transfer them. With the AX4300, I never get speeds below 470Mpbs, up and down, anywhere in house. That makes my hybrid home/office work much easier. Even in my backyard outdoor kitchen, I get speeds over 200Mbps easily. Peak performance of 910Mbps to the internet (I have 1 gigabit fiber).
Because I have gaming and video computers in different parts of the house, I prefer to use wired connectivity for them. It’s nice to see that each unit has two 1 Gigabit and one 2.5 Gigabit ethernet ports for that. That allows for even greater speeds for those with internet with more bandwidth than I have. In one area, I connect an Apple TV directly to one of the ports. All work flawlessly. The backbone is still wireless, but you can perceive improvement over Wi-Fi only, since you don’t need to compete with airtime. If you understand how Wi-Fi really works, you know exactly why it matters. Otherwise, please trust me, it makes a big difference.
Many features impressed me but one stood out: the low latency. I use a wireless SIP phone that connects me back to the office. It was almost impossible to use it in my backyard before. With this system, I was able to use it out there and it performed just like it would inside the house. No chopping or any other audio issues. Good also for video conferencing and gaming, of course.
Below are the main pros and cons besides the one mentioned earlier:
PROS:
• Prioritization (QOS): This allows you to make one or more devices to be prioritized above all others. Great for gaming, for instance, or when you need to make sure you’re not competing bandwidth with other people. It worked well in my tests.
• Parental Controls
• Fast
• Built-in security
• Future-proof multigigabit ports
CONS:
• Does not support Wi-Fi 6e. Not many devices support that yet that but it would future-proof it if it did.
Although I listed it as a con, I only found a small downside, which I can’t call an issue. But with so many good things to say about it, that really is minor. Currently, I have nothing that supports 6e and most people don’t either because it will take years until manufactures include a third radio in their Wi-Fi devices. With the speed of Wi-Fi 6, it would make little to no difference to have 6e now. Wi-Fi 6 can already match the speed of 1Gig fiber and this system delivers it vey well. Deco brand has made me consider TP-Link for other needs going forward. Well done!

Fun, Efficient, and Lightweight!
on June 10, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
To be honest, I had never heard of Tineco before. So, I was very skeptical. But although I can’t tell whether it’s going to last and keep performing as good in the long run, I can tell you that so far it has not just surpassed all my expectations, but it has also impressed me and my significant other. She is more into cleaning the house than I am. What I am into is technology. This wet and dry vacuum/mopper has impressed her with its efficiency and me with all the bells and whistles. Yes, it not only senses the dirt and wet, but it even gives you some voice feedback. And it comes with an app. I had not seen this type of cleaner with all these smart features. It is self-propelled, which makes it very easy to handle. It doesn’t drive itself like Roomba-like devices, but it certainly cleans better and does more. And who knows in the future, it will self-drive and help us to keep gaining weight while we watch it do the work without hour intervention ;). In the meantime, this is as good as it gets.
My house floors are mostly hardwood and tiles with just a small area with carpet. Although we are only 3 people living in it, it is not easy to keep it clean. The S3 was made exactly for those types of floors and it did a great job. We did notice some streaks here and there, but the truth is that it was cleaning so well, that it ended up highlighting the poor job of our mopping before. If you follow the built-in indicator screen, it will come out spotless. Yes, it shows you when the spot needs more cleaning. No more standard mops in this house.
Until now, the word fun would have never been used by me in the same sentence where mopping/cleaning was involved. The S3 changed that. I’m saying that it’s fun because I tried it myself. The word used by my 13-year-old and my girlfriend was cool. We all though it was much easier and lighter than anything else we had used before.
Battery time was impressive. My house size is not small by any standard, but one charge was enough to complete the job. The only time we had to interrupt was to refill the tank. I just wished it cleaned itself. Oh wait, it does clean itself! At least to a certain extent. I had to move the included docking station to the laundry room because of its self-cleaning feature, which makes more noise than our washing machine in heavy load mode. I can’t call that a con considering what it does. Very happy with it.

Efficient, Smart and Compatible with Everything
on June 7, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
Setup was very easy. I had installed a similar one before, so I knew exactly what to do even without the easy walk-though instructions, but I did follow it anyway. And here’s a big warning: the first Smart Thermostat I installed burned a fuse in my system and I ended up paying almost $200 to fix because I would have never thought that a device that uses low voltage power could do that. And yes, the instructor told me to shut the power down but I didn’t because I “knew better”. My bad. However, I was very careful with the Ecobee Enhanced Thermostat and it worked flawlessly the first time.
What impressed me the most was the fact that it supports ALL popular virtual assistants and smart home control systems, from Google Home, SmarThings, and Apple Smartkit, to Amazon Alexa and IFTTT. Yes! I want to be able to choose whatever platform and run all my smart devices without guessing or being afraid it’s not compatible with what I choose. Ecobee did a great job here.
The presence sensor works really well and it adjusts the temperature automatically at bed time, so it’s comfortable and induces a good night sleep. I had used that function with another smart Thermostat and it made a huge difference in my sleep pattern, allowing me to sleep deeper and with less disruptions. The Ecobee has done the same, but it is smarter and more efficient than the one it replaced.
I’ll need some time to confirm that it does save electricity/gas, but it’s easy to conclude that it does just by observing its behavior. When we’re away from home, it basically turns off cooling/heating until we are about to get back home. It learns your patterns to adjust temperature just before you return. So, it’s always comfortable without wasting power.
I would recommend purchasing some sensors to add to rooms where the built-in sensor can’t measure temperature. I have noticed that it keeps some rooms too warm, just because it is cooler where the Thermostat is. An add-on sensor would fix that issue.
Personally, I like its look. It’s functional, easy to use, and compatible with all popular smart home platforms/controls. What’s not to like about it? By the way, many states still offer rebates when you add a smart Thermostat. It could make this Ecobee cost closer to zero. Check with your power company for any potential rebates. Highly recommended.

Bright Lights and Bright Idea
on February 6, 2022
Posted by: jailoliv
from Medford, OR
Before buying this, note that it doesn’t include the Nest Camera and I don’t believe you can make it work with other cameras. If you already have a Nest Camera, this is a must-have. It not only gives you a motion sensor floodlight, but it also adds a charger to it.
Installation was easy for me because I already had the wring. I have done this type of install many times and have no issues with it, but if you don’t already have the wiring available and you don’t like running power cables yourself, a pro is recommended.
Bright lights with a good motion sensor make this a must-have for the Nest Cam. One thing that many users, myself included, will find missing is an option to keep it on for longer intervals. You’re stuck with what it offers by default. This is an issue with most floodlights, but manufacturers should have started to add some smartness to them by now. This is the smart IoT devices generation after all. I’m not that young anymore but I like smart homes and wish even my floodlights had some “intelligence” built in.
The only other thing about this floodlight that may bother some people is that its footprint is a bit overkill in my opinion, but it’s just a matter of perception and it doesn’t get in the way of functionality.
A great additional feature is the charger for the camera. This gives me peace of mind, especially when I’m away from home and can’t recharge the batteries. I would say the charger was a bright idea, but it would sound like a pun although not intentional. Overall, it surpassed my expectations.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

If this works with Nest system will it work with Ecobee* system? I We decided against the Nest system due to the class action suits regarding house fires. I would love to add this to our home.

No not yet but I believe it will soon. As far as I know, for now it only supports Nest, SmartThings, Philips Hue and IFTTT.
