Superior performance in a self-emptying vacuum
on September 21, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
The self emptying Shark AI Robot Vacuum is by far the best robotic cleaning appliance I've had the pleasure to use.
We use this upstairs, as nobody seems to have a model that will climb stairs yet and it cleans the space impeccably. The robot seamlessly navigates the complete floor and cleans in spots that admittedly probably haven't been cleaned in years (I.e. under the beds) with ease.
Navigation is superior - after the easy unboxing experience (5 minutes from opening the box to ready to go), the robot runs a cycle where it basically learns the area that it's going to be cleaning. The iOS app then displays a map of the area, where you can cordon off individual areas that can be used to send the robot to clean. If you simply want to clean the bedroom, you can send the robot to clean the bedroom and then come home, it does not have to clean the entire area in a single job.
Starting a cleaning job is fairly easy - you open the app and hit "clean" and select a cleaning level - low, medium, or high. The higher the cleaning level you select, it will supposedly clean deeper, but it will consume more battery which in turn requires more trips back to the base station to charge to complete the entire job. After the cleaning job, you can look in the app and see the areas that were cleaned and how well the coverage was. If the robot gets stuck or some other error occurs with the cleaning job, it will send a push notification to your app.
You can also set up a schedule in the app to have the robot start cleaning on whichever days of the week you want at any start time in 5 minute intervals (I.e. 9:00A, 9:05A, 9:10A, etc...)
Aside from fantastic navigation, the robot has gotten stuck only once and that is when it encountered the drying rack that my wife hangs clothes on and it vacuumed up a piece of clothing that was touching the floor. Otherwise, it does a fantastic job of object avoidance.
If you have been considering a self emptying robot vacuum, don't wait. I never realized how much of a game-changer feature this is. When the robot docks, the loudest noise it makes is when the dock sucks all of the debris from the robot into the base station collection area. A few seconds and the robot is ready to go. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten notes from my other robot vacuum that it can't start because the bin is full when I'm not home and it's on schedule. I have yet to be prompted to empty the base station - however this will all depend on how big of an area you are cleaning and how much debris it collects.
Out of all the positives I've listed so far, by far my favorite feature is how quiet this vacuum is. Operation isn't silent, but I can't imagine a vacuum operating any quieter than this one does.
I have also installed the Alexa skill which allows this robot to be controlled via the Alexa app or via voice controls. The voice control app is fairly straight forward and the prompts are descriptive without being too wordy. As of this writing, the Alexa app does not have any graphics for Echo Show devices.
Shark really hit a home run with this one. If you're considering a robot vacuum, you need to give this model strong consideration - this device provides top notch performance at a price that is less than other brands with similar features.

Unbelievable

I am truly amazed at this little USB storage device. I'll date myself and say I recall when my first 20MB hard disk drive was $700 and was slower than molasses, andyet we were glad to have it, but now we can have 512GB in something smaller than my finger with two flavors of USB on tap for a fraction of that price.
As a Mac user, this device is perfect. My iMac only has USB-A and my MBP is USB-C. This saves so much time not having to hunt for dongles and makes large file transfers between devices easy.
The write speed on this is pretty good. I was copying some large files from my iMac to this and 4.x GB transfer took less than two minutes to the drive, and well under 60 seconds to transfer back from the USB storage device to the iMac. Transfer speeds were similar on my MacBook Pro using USB-C.
If you're considering a high capacity, high performance USB flash device, I'd strongly recommend the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type C. Like most of us, you're probably still straddling your existing devices that have USB-A as well as your newer devices with USB-C. It's got the connectivity you need for today and tomorrow in a tiny, yet powerful package. You can even hang it on your key ring so you always have it with you!

We’re bringing Quantum Dot Color to the people. Enjoy over one billion colors, without worrying about how many commas are on the price tag. You’re welcome. The U6G also has 4K resolution, Dolby Vision HDR and Full Array Local Dimming Zones. Sounds like science, looks like a way more expensive set. Especially with a quad-core processor managing all the algorithms that add up to more colors, more precision and more ooohhh.

Feature rich 4K TV with an entry level price
on July 6, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
The Hisense U6G brings a lot of features in the entry level 4K TV market, with the highlights being Quantum LED, full array local dimming, and Android TV.
Unboxing this TV was a chore. It says to use two people, and for the best experience you should. Actually, getting it out of the box wasn't the hard part - getting the tape off of the border of the casing and screen of the TV was. It was VERY sticky and I thought for sure I was going to break the screen getting it off.
If you just want to stream, you literally need only a power cord - this TV has built in Wi-Fi and the setup process was fairly easy. Like most devices, there's a couple of EULAs you have to agree to. If you have a Google account, you can easily connect it to your Google account during this process and have access to all of your compatible, purchased apps - as well as you will be signed into popular Google apps like YouTube.
I do watch a lot of YouTube - it's my primary source of content. The built-in YouTube app works great with YouTube Premium and displays 4K content very nicely. Displaying the youtube "Stats for Nerds" shows this TV has no issues with buffers, etc.. Audio/Video sync is perfect.
For most of my non-YouTube content, I do use an AppleTV 4K unit. The AppleTV 4K works perfectly with this TV, including HDMI-CEC to allow the AppleTV remote to be the only remote you need to control this TV - including power on / power off. The TV also got the name of the AppleTV and automatically renamed the HDMI input to match the name of the AppleTV. Of note, when switching input to the AppleTV 4K or at initial power-on, it does display the "Dolby Vision" logo. Though the picture looks great on this TV, I can't discern exactly what Dolby Vision is buying me without a side by side comparison, which is impossible to do at home.
I do have a Netflix 4K subscription and did search for some content both in 4K as well as some that supposedly supports Dolby Vision. Again, without a side-by-side comparison, it's hard to tell what it looks like with or without Dolby Vision Enabled.
With that being said, 4K content looks great. Full array local dimming really shows as blacks are deep black, even when brighter colors are present on other parts of the screen. 1080p/1080i/720p content looks great as well.
I do use this TV in my office, so I do not have it connected to an external sound bar / home theater system. With that being said, the internal speakers in this TV work well for built in speakers. It fills my room with sound at an adequate listening volume.
I also have this TV mounted on a single-arm articulating mount. Mouting was easy and the VESA 300x200 mounting points in the TV are adequately strong. The TV weighs about 32 pounds and is about 3 inches thick, so it should work with most mounts.
Of note, I did run into a limitation with the AT&T TV Now app - it is what we use for "cable like" content - unfortunately AT&T puts restrictions on what devices the app will run on and Android TV is not one of the supported Android devices, so I have to run that app on my AppleTV. (Useful info in case you wanted to lean entirely on AndroidTV as your streaming platform.) Also, it does state that it is compatible with Amazon Alexa, however I was not able to get to the registration website - it keeps timing out.
Overall, this TV brings a lot of bang for the buck when comparing against other units in the price range. After using this TV, I'm super happy I selected this model.

Quality nail clippers that work for our toddler
on July 6, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
When it comes to nail clippers, there's not a whole lot to be improved on, or at least we thought.
In a world full of inexpensive grooming products, Tweezerman always seems to find a way to separate their products from the rest of the pack, and these clippers are no exception.
The clippers themselves are of high quality, and the large green handles that are attached make the chore of clipping our toddler's nails a much easier task. Seriously, you wouldn't think these handles make that much of a difference, but they really do.
Our toddler really didn't let us use the nail file without some serious objection, but it does seem to be of high quality and for filing small nails it should probably last longer than you'll need toddler size grooming tools.
Overall, I'm glad we have these and I'd definitely recommend to friends and family!

Simple operation for clean air
on June 23, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
I use the Shark Air Purifier 6 in my office and so far it's been an excellent performer.
The unit itself somewhat larger than I was expecting, about 35-36 inches tall, a few inches thick but is VERY lightweight.
Operation of the unit is super simple - Unbox, install the filter, plug it in, turn it on, and I set it to auto and let it go to work. The filter is almost as large as the unit, but only about an inch thick. It does have some manual modes that you can set, but it seems they simply adjust the fan speed - a higher fan speed scrubs more air.
The unit has no physical "buttons" - simply touch reactive buttons on the top where you can adjust the fan speed, power, and the display status. The top display can show the overall air quality represented in a percentage, the fan speed, the filter life, and the status of various air contaminates. There's also a front display that shows the air quality represented in percentage - it's easy enough to read from across the room. A remote control is included, but I simply let this unit run on auto and I really haven't touched it since I took it out of the box. If you had this in a bedroom, the remote does let you dim or turn off the front display for lights out operation.
In auto, when the air quality is 100% (which is most of the time in our home), the unit is really quiet - the large number of fans move a lot of air but the fans do not have to be on a high speed to do so. When air contamination does pick up, the fans will pick up a bit of speed and the indicators on the top and front will change colors from blue to orange to red indicating the overall air quality status.
The unit has a filter lifetime of about 4,400 hours, which is about 6 months.
It is very reactive to things in the air. I noticed that when emptying my paper shredder, the small amount of dust from the paper shredder bin made the air quality drop to around 80% for a bit. I also tested by spraying an aerosol can near the unit, and the air quality quickly dropped, but in both cases the unit quickly reported the air quality coming back to 100% within a couple of minutes.
The only drawbacks I see to this unit are it's size - it's somewhat tall and wide. The other drawback is the filter cost - it appears to be about $100 give or take depending on which filter you buy.
Overall, this is a nice unit and keeps my office smelling fresh.

Surprising results
on April 20, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
This is an interesting product. At first glance, you'd look at this and say "How the heck is this going to help me not grow hair?" - Whatever the research behind it is, it works.
The device is about the size of a mens handheld electric shaver, or maybe a medium size baking potato. It has a power cord that goes to a power brick, then plugs into the wall. The cord between the IPL device and the power brick is quite long, as well as the cord that goes into the power brick is a somewhat standard type that is detachable and can easily be extended if need be - handy if you don't have an outlet near your mirror.
The unit comes with some basic instructions, most important of which is the do's and don'ts - which you need to read thoroughly. There's a chart that lets you know which skin tones that this device will work with, and if you have a very dark skin tone OR have recent tanning/sun exposure you are warned not to use the device to avoid damage to your skin.
When you plug in the device, it has a very formidable sounding fan that lets you know there's some serious energy being used. Operation is pretty simple - you place it against your bare skin and press the button. You can tap the button for one-off flashes or you can hold it down and move the device around the treatment area and it will continuously flash, up to 100x per minute if you can last that long. You'll want to use the individual flash feature for more sensitive areas like the chin or bikini area, and you can likely get away with the continuous method for larger, more durable areas like the legs or arms. The unit does have a sensor to know whether or not it is being pressed against a valid skin tone before activating the flash.
My wife has the most consistent results here so I will post about her experience. She has a lighter Mediterranean complexion with lovely medium brunette hair.

Let's face it - some women get unwanted facial hair and this was her target area. She would lightly shave the area and then use the IPL device on the area once a week for the past six weeks. After four weeks of treatment, she has definitely noticed a slowing of the growth of unwanted hair on the chin area. After six weeks, the hair is still growing in, but VERY slowly. Treatment for her face takes all of about a minute, and that's likely a liberal estimate of the time taken. All in all, this unit gets a five star rating for results.
The flash that the unit puts off is a very unique sensation. It essentially looks like a camera flash unit from a small camera, and puts out a short but loud click and burst of heat when it's pressed against your skin, which is startling at first, but after you have used the device a few times you get used to the sensation.
I will admit that going in we were somewhat skeptical of the results, but after using this device all doubt has been cast aside. This device works, and costs a fraction of what treatments at a med spa would cost - and can be done in minutes in the comfort of your own home.

Everything you need in a compact package
on April 5, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
This is a great little USB-C Docking Station / Port Replicator. The terms for this kind of device kind of become blurred these days - so whatever you want to call it - I like it. The compact design is the key reason for selecting this device, and the intuitive way the USB-C cable that plugs into your computer stores within the device is fantastic. You simply twist the bottom and top parts of the device and the cable comes in and out in a fluid motion. Never once has it felt like it was going to twist, tangle, or place any undue stress on the cable.
I selected this to use with my 2017 MacBook Pro 13" and for all the use cases I have it works fairly well. Using one USB-C port, I was able to connect an external 4K LG monitor via HDMI, plug in a USB flash drive, and use the external NIC all simultaneously. I was able to get 4K resolution out of the monitor using a standard HDMI cord, and I was able to get almost 900Mbps throughput on the device.
One area where I did run into some issues was with charging - when I had the Apple charger plugged into the USB-C port on this device and then this plugged into the laptop, it seemed like it would stop charging every so often, because I'd hear the laptop make the "I'm charging" notification randomly while I was using it or even while the laptop was not in use with the lid closed while charging through this device.
Overall, this isn't a deal breaker for me - as my device has 4 USB-C ports, and I was simply able to plug the charger in directly and then plug the accessories into the USB-C adaptor.
For the super technical people - I was also not able to successfully use a user defined MAC address on the Ethernet adapter, which is something I occasionally need to do for work. However, this is not unique to this device - I think it's endemic to USB to Ethernet adaptors and MacOS.
I would buy this again in a heartbeat - the compact form factor is great to throw in my backpack and give me access to all the ports I need when using my compact laptop computer.

Ajustable Dumbells for the smart age
on February 18, 2021
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
I never knew how owning a set of adjustable dumbbells changes your perception of a home workout setup.
In the past, if you wanted to have a set of dumbbells that covered a variety of weights, you had to have a rack that took up a considerable amount of space - and a considerable amount of weight in your workout area. Adjustable dumbbells are a great compromise - you get a variety of weights available to you and you take up a fraction of the amount of space required compared to a full set that would typically range in the 30-35 pound area.
The JAXJOX Dumbbell connect dumbbells are part of an overall system of JAXJOX connected fitness equipment. The dumbbells not only report back stats like the amount of reps and sets you have completed, but you can change the weight of the dumbbells via the app / fitness program that JAXJOX offers at an additional cost.
The dumbbells themselves are quite interesting in design. They start out at 8 pounds with no additional weight attached, and adjusting the weight adds a 3 pound plate on either end of the dumbbell, allowing you to get increments of 8, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, and 50 pounds - so keep this in mind if you're doing workouts and you have a need to start smaller than 8 or want to increment less than 6. For starting smaller, I'd simply buy some smaller 2 to 5 pounds weights.
Features I like about the JAXJOX dumbbells - they have a nice flat spot on the bottom, so between sets you can set them down and they aren't going to roll anywhere. The base stations that you use to dock the dumbbells have a battery and charge via USB, so I can keep these in my workout area, and charge them as needed (I charge them without the dumbbells sitting on them.). Also, this may sound strange - but when the additional plates are attached to these dumbbells, there's no jiggling / "clacking" - the plates attach in a very solid manner. The grip surface of each dumbbell is milled fairly deep and provides good grip on bare hands, without being too aggressive to cause soreness / calluses.
I do find myself adjusting the weight manually on the base station rather than using the app - as I've found myself falling back to my normal training routine rather than the JAXJOX fitness program - as it's easier to simply tap the button a few times to get the weight you want rather than going through the mobile phone app.
I will say - adjustable dumbbells overall are pricey, especially during these times as more people look to workout at home. You are paying a premium for the smart connectivity features above and beyond what a comparable set of adjustable dumbbells would cost, but these are also a premium product in their own rite.

Easy install and good fit for iPhone 12 Pro Max
on December 14, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
Screen protectors are largely a commodity these days, with the market flooded with inexpensive options.
The OtterBox Amplify seems to be in a different league than the generics that I've used in the past.
First, the install system is really interesting - You get a cradle of sorts to put the phone in, which will perfectly center the phone. The screen protector is attached to a plastic piece that is the exact length to center the screen on the phone when the phone is centered in the cradle.
Install is overall easy - line up the phone in the cradle, clean the screen with the included wet/dry cloths, use the "dust sticker" to blot up any dust that has settled on the screen, remove the cover of the sticky side of the protector and simply pull the plastic tab that holds the screen protector and place it over the hook. The kit also includes a nice squeegee tool to work out any air bubbles. Install was done in about 5 minutes from unboxing to being on my phone, and there were a couple of bubbles that I could not squeegee out, but by the next morning they were gone.
Overall, the protector seems to be of high quality and one of the main features is to block out harmful light spectrum, which leaves the screen protector with this funky blue tint if you set the phone in the right light and view it in the right angle. I find myself very sensitive to color shifts, but during normal usage looking at the phone straight on it looks great. I don't notice really any difference in color from the screen output. Another nice touch is the edges of the protector are not sharp - some of the other protectors I've used have sharp edges, which leave your thumb uncomfortable when swiping up from the bottom. This protector does not do that - it must have some micro rounded edge.
Overall, this is a nice screen protector. We'll see how the long term performance is - and inevitably how it will handle drops and what the warranty swap out program is like.

Great all around vacuum sealer
on November 19, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
I chose this to replace my old vacuum sealer and I'm glad I did.
The Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro is everything I would want in a vacuum sealer.
Operation is simple - you measure off the length of bag you need from the roll, seal one side, insert the food, insert the open end of the bag into the sealer, hit the vacuum seal button and about 30-45 seconds later your bag is completely void of air and sealed off - ready for either the freezer or the sous vide.
What I really like about this device is that the lid locks - you can insert the bag, lock the lid, and then hit the button for completely hands free operation - you don't have to hold down the lid. This is a huge time saver as you can be doing something else while the bag is sealing.
If you have a sous vide, this is almost a must. I used to put food in ziploc bags, and even with a number of tricks to get all of the air out, the bags were still buoyant to a point and required clips/weight to keep them down. Vacuum sealed bags allow the food to remain immersed below the surface without additional weight, which is awesome.
The sealer also has an external vacuum hose that you can use to seal compatible jars or remove the air from bags.

The other big use for this is to buy in bulk and save money - you can buy larger quantities of things when they're on sale and vacuum seal them for the freezer. When all the air is taken out, food does not get freezer burnt - so therefore lasts longer and tastes better.
Overall, I'm super happy with this sealer and would highly recommend.
