Quite possibly the perfect charging accessory

When I saw this device I knew I had to have it. The tangled mess of charging cords on my nightstand has been an untenable situation for a long time. A special charger for the Apple Watch, Lightning cables that die, and wireless charging discs that take forever to charge the phone and require precise placement to get the charging to activate were all making my nightstand a nightmare.
In comes the Belkin BOOST 3-in-1 Wireless Charger. It was built for those who are all in on the Apple mobile ecosystem. It fits my iPhone XS Max, Apple Watch Series 4 44MM and AirPods Pro perfectly. Plop all my gadgets down at bedtime and the next morning they're powered up and ready for another day.
The wireless charger is actually quite impressive - it seems to charge my phone significantly faster than my last wireless charger.
There's not a whole lot more I can say about this accessory - if you're looking for a clean solution to power your Apple mobile ecosystem, this is it. I will definitely be getting one for my wife as well!

Top Features in a USB-C hub
on June 19, 2020

If you plug in anything except for a power cord to your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, this device is an absolute must.
Let's face it - since the dawn of USB-C on the MBA/MBP line a few years ago, Mac users live in a dongle world. My travel case is full of USB-A to C adaptors, HDMI adaptors, charging cords, etc.. but this device really delivers in the way of shrinking down the number of dongles I have to carry.
The features of this device are self explanatory if you're looking at it, but the addition of both SD Card readers is a huge pro for me.
A couple things I'm lukewarm on are the way the dongle looks and feels when I use it with the case on my MBP. On one hand, I'm grateful the device is compatible with a case. I've seen a few similar devices that are absolute no-gos if you have any sort of case on your MBP. On the other hand, the device looks a little strange with a gap between the MBP and the hub where the case gaps to allow access to the ports. The extra long USB-C connectors also seem slightly unstable and I'm always afraid I'm going to break it while using. If you are obsessive about this kind of thing, the metal on the case of the hub doesn't match the space gray on my MBP exactly, but it's close. If that's a big deal for you, just know that going in.
Otherwise, this device is going to save me a bunch of room in my travel cord organizer, and once business travel resumes - it's going to be a welcome addition to my travel setup.

Great smart lock if you love your existing lock
on May 11, 2020

The August Wi-Fi Smart lock is an interesting solution to bring smart lock functionality to a deadbolt lock that already exists in your home.
At it's core, it's a device that replaces the inside lever for your existing deadbolt. Instead of you using the manual lever, this device receives a command from the app that turns the lever on your behalf. It's a pretty simple solution that doesn't require "forklift upgrading" your existing lock.
I wish I could say that installation of this lock was straight forward. I consider myself pretty handy, as well as pretty good with technology and gadgets in general. To begin the installation process, you download the August app, register for an account (Mandatory 2FA required - Nice!), create a "Home" (A home is a group of locks at one address, in case you have August locks installed at multiple residences like your vacation home and your main home, or maybe some Airbnb properties you own.), then choose the option to add a lock.
The installation process is outlined step by step, and follows along the process which is table stakes for smart home gadgets these days - choose your model, scan the QR code on the device to pair it, and then the physical installation steps are shown on screen as you are walked through each step.
Where my installation went sideways turned out to be where you have to choose which brand of lock you are implementing the August Smart Lock on. Included with the lock are four colored adapters. These adapters fit on the August Smart Lock and then mate to the cam bar inside of the lock. The cam bar is the long rod that connects the front of the lock, through the deadbolt, to the rear of the lock - it's the part that turns when you turn the key / inside lock lever. The instructions tell you to use a certain colored adapter based upon the manufacturer of the lock you have. I had a Schlage lock, so the app advised me to use the yellow adapter. I put the yellow adapter on, the adapter fit, the lock mounted, and manually turning the lock would lock and unlock the deadbolt. Sounds good, right? No.. Not so fast.
The lock has to be at a certain orientation to the door to be detected as locked/unlocked in the app when you start the calibration process, and mine was not.
So on a Friday night at 9:00P Central - I called support. The IVR system for August is actually pretty neat and sent me a text message with a link to an online support article that tried to solve my problem, but did not. A rep was not immediately available, but I did receive a call back within about 10 minutes - which I thought was actually pretty good given the time of day as well as staffing may be affected due to the current pandemic.
After working with support for about an hour, and the support rep escalating to her next tier, it was suggested I try the blue adapter - Once I changed out the adapter, I immediately noticed the orientation of the rotation of the smart lock on the door changed - unlocked was now at about the 1:00 position, and locked was now more toward 10:00. This is apparently what is required for calibration to complete, as I was able to calibrate the lock in one attempt after switching the adapter.
Also included with the lock, but wasn't readily apparent, was the inclusion of the "Doorsense" module, which is essentially a magnet that you affix to the door frame. if the smart lock is unlocked, but detects the presence of the magnet, it can assume the door is closed and will tell you the open/closed status of the door in the app. Kind of a neat feature, but the doorsense magnet is somewhat tacky looking. There is an option for flush mounting it in the door, but requires a 5/8" spade bit that I didn't have, and obviously drilling an appropriate hole in your door.
All that being said, once the lock was installed, the functionality was as expected. Lock requests from the app were quick, and the door lock makes a different chime when the lock is toggled to lock or unlock. I did have to go in to lock setup and configure Wi-Fi though - I was surprised that this was not part of the initial setup work flow. Once Wi-Fi is set up, the lock can be controlled from anywhere that your mobile device has connectivity.
I also immediately set up the Alexa skill, which is what we use to control the lock the most in our house. As per Alexa's interface with smart locks, the option to unlock the door via voice command is something that needs to be enabled manually, which I like and have disabled. Asking Alexa to lock the lock is quick (usually within 10 seconds) and works great when I see my 1 year old making a beeline for the door when I forgot to lock it. It was also easy to integrate the August Smart Lock into my routines (I.e. "Going to bed" locks all doors, turns off lights, sets thermostat down, etc..), as well as our leaving home routine. Since this lock is on our garage entry, we can have it lock the door 30 seconds after we trigger the routine, which provides decent piece of mind that in case we forget to close the garage door- the entry is going to be locked.
Aesthetically, the lock is definitely notable. Its large stature and matte silver finish make it look much more formidable than the lock it's controlling.
I would have liked to have seen Z-Wave compatibility maintained in this model, to work with my Ring alarm system, but if that's a show-stopper feature, you can buy the model that has Z-Wave and use a Wi-Fi bridge.
Overall, this is a decent option if you need to keep the lock you already have. For the retail price, you can likely buy an entire deadbolt replacement. This product would be great for apartments, dorms, or really anywhere you don't own, but want to smart lock enable.

Surprisingly good tool for clean floors!
on April 21, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
I will admit I was a bit skeptical going in on this, but I was desperate for a solution to keep my hardwood floors clean in-between simple sweeping / running of the Roomba and full on scrubbing. I think I've found the solution.
The Shark VacMop is a lightweight cleaning tool that vacuums as well as wet-mops the floor with a disposable pad. The interesting part of the disposable pad is that it has a small reservoir for debris that the vacuum portion picks up. Once the pad is soiled, you simply discard the pad, which also gets rid of the debris reservoir.
This tool is excellent for after-dinner cleanup at our home. As much as I hate to admit it, cooking tends to get crumbs, salt and pepper, spices, garlic peels, and other small debris on the floor. With a toddler in the house, we can quadruple the amount of debris that makes it on the floor.
The vacmop is perfect for this kind of light clean up. It's literally as easy as pulling the vacuum trigger, running it over the area to vacuum, then you can hit the spray button to dispense some of the cleaning solution on the floor and run the mop pad over it.
This isn't a replacement for good old-fashioned mopping or hands-and-knees scrubbing, but for keeping floors tidy and in good appearance on a daily basis, this thing excels.
Unboxing and setup is simple - took less than 5 minutes from unboxing to having the device charging. The manual states a full charge from empty will take about 3.5 hours, but the charge indicator indicated full in about 1.5 from the time we took it out of the box. The unit comes with two of the vacmop pads included in the box, as well as a supply of the general purpose hard floor cleaning solution large enough to fill the reservoir on the unit one time.
The vacuum power is surprisingly good on this, however it's definitely for picking up crumbs and dust, it's not for picking up large debris - you're either going to have to get that by hand or move to more traditional methods.
The unit weighs in at a little over four pounds, and it hangs conveniently on one of the Command Hook broom holders that we have. Overall, the unit takes up slightly more room than a traditional broom.
One concern I had was the price of consumables, but currently on the Best Buy website, 2 litres of the refill cleaning solution is currently priced at $9.99, and 16 replacement pads are currently priced at $12.99 - so the operating expense on this product isn't high.
If I had to say there's one drawback to this is the charger. It's a proprietary connector that magnetically attaches to the unit, and since it is circular in shape does not require any specific orientation, which is nice, but also adds yet another charger to the arsenal of charger bricks that I have laying around. Some type of popular USB charging (Micro USB / USB-C) would have been a nice touch.
Overall though, this is a neat little cleaning tool and we love it so far!

The ultimate home air quality improvement product
on April 21, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
The Dyson PH01 is a premium air purification / humidification appliance that is unlike anything else I've seen in the market.
We replaced an aging humidifier for our bedroom with the Dyson PH01. The Dyson PH01 brings not only humidification but air purification to the table.
Everything about this device oozes quality - form the unboxing experience, to set up, and operation, it's a premium device. Unboxing took all of about 5 minutes - there's a lot of cardboard packing and a lot of tape to keep all the parts in place during shipping. Amongst all of the packing material, I almost missed the box with the included cleaning solution!
Setup was a breeze. Plug it in, fill the tank with water, and technically it's ready to start humidifying and purifying. There's also a Dyson mobile app for your smartphone that allows you to control all functions of the device, set schedules, and view status about the humidification and air quality levels in the area where the device is running. I also enabled the Alexa skill for the unit. From unboxing, getting the PH01 operational, and having the mobile app set up and the Alexa skill enabled was around 15 minutes, maybe less. The included instructions are great, but for most users the setup is fairly intuitive.
This device definitely has some features that I would classify as making this a "Luxury" humidification product. First, it has Dyson's Air Multiplier technology. I haven't read the "ins and outs" on how this works, but without a traditional fan blade, this thing can really move some air volume. At lower airflow settings, the unit is practically silent - but at higher airflow settings, the noise level does increase, but still significantly less than that of a traditional fan. It also has a "natural breeze" oscillation mode that attempts to create an airflow pattern that is reminiscent of an actual breeze, rather than a fan oscillating back and forth. It also has an option that I turn on at night to direct the airflow out of the rear of the unit to still keep airflow going, but not blowing directly on our bed - a very nice touch.
The unit definitely has the Dyson look and feel to it. We have it in our master bedroom, but if this were in our family room its non-traditional appearance would definitely be a topic of conversation.
As an air purifier, it shows data on and can apparently scrub for oxides of nitrogen, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter in the 10 micron and 2.5 micron ranges. On the air purification front, I'm not sure I'm seeing a lot of benefit here, based on the data that this unit provides. The mobile app provides realtime and historical data on the air quality that it observes. The numbers for our master bedroom in any of the categories have never left the "Good" zone. I am not certain if this is because the air quality is simply OK in our room, or if the unit is always scrubbing the air and keeping it clean. Either way, the information provided is interesting.
As for controls, there's five ways we can control the unit - Button on the top of the base to toggle power and start the cleaning session, the included remote control, the mobile app, the Alexa skill, as well as the scheduling function in the app. The remote control is small, but buttons have good feedback and the unit is immediately responsive to controls. The mobile app also works well to control the unit. Using the Alexa skill for voice control is of limited usefulness for this appliance, but the Alexa skill does allow you to control many of the functions of this device and integrate this device as part of your routines. For example, I had the device go into night mode when we executed our "Going to bed" Alexa routine. All in all, once I set up a schedule though, I hardly ever touch the controls. We tend to have a fixed bedtime / wake up routine, so a fixed schedule works well for us - literally set it and forget it.
The mobile app has a few cool features, some I've mentioned above. One is that it tells you your remaining filter life, and when cleanings are due. One thing that would be nice is if the app would notify us when the humidifier tank is empty.
With that being said, there's few drawbacks to this product. One, the humidifier tank needs filling frequently. I don't think there's a way around this in this time of year other than a larger tank, which would mean a larger unit. As mentioned above, the mobile app notification for humidifier tank empty status would be cool as well. An issue for us is also button placement on the unit. There's two buttons on the top of the unit, and our one year old son loves to discover new things, and he quickly discovered the buttons on top - and put the unit into a cleaning cycle, so we have to watch him whenever he ventures into our room!
Another drawback could be considered the price - this is essentially a luxury humidification / purification unit that brings a lot of features to the table for a significant cost of entry. However, I will say that we have two Dyson vacuums in our home, and one of the units is going on 14 years old right now and still works as well as the day it was new. From what I have observed, you are buying a quality Dyson product that should last for years to come.

Excellent performance at an excellent price

After using these buds for a short while I'm a fan. These buds offer pretty decent sound quality at an outstanding value.
Pairing these buds was super simple - pull a headphone out of the innovative charging case and they're ready to pair. It took less than 45 seconds from out of the package until these were ready to play sound.
The pre-installed tip fit my ear canal fairly well. It did take a bit of fidgeting to get a decent fit, but once I figured out how to get a good fit, it's essentially a thoughtless process you do automatically when inserting them into the ear.
Sound quality is good - especially for the price. These buds are perfect for working out or doing outdoor yard work - where you need music but you're not necessarily overly concerned about that 11 out of 10 sound quality, nor are you going to be out a ton of cash if one falls out, gets lost, ate by the lawnmower, etc.. I do have to turn them up quite a bit to get a decent volume out of them, but ultimately they do get loud enough for my listening tastes.
The charing case is pretty cool - the headphones snap into place with a reassuring magnetic click and so far I haven't been able to accidentally dislodge them. The integrated charging cable is also a huge pro - you can charge these anywhere without needing to carry a cable.
There is a recommended burn-in procedure where it plays various types of noise (pink noise, brown noise, frequency sweeps, etc..) for 20 minutes or so at a time, and they recommend doing this for 40 hours. I honestly don't see anyone who buys value buds doing this, but I did it for one cycle and though the science sounds solid on it, they sound decent enough without 39 additional hours of this.
I've made a phone call on these or two, and the call quality was great and the remote party did not mention any issues hearing me as well.
Overall, these buds are great performers and If I lost them today I'd probably go pick up another set.

Gee, your leg looks hairless!
on February 26, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
Let's face it - shaving is a chore that most of us would rather not have to do. Any way we can find a way to save time / effort on shaving would likely be worth it, right?
Well, maybe...
The Philips Satinelle Epilator delivers on it's promise of being a small, compact epilation device that works well. The device is sturdy, and the included shield for sensitive areas is definitely a plus. (The shield essentially raises the epilation head from the skin about 1/8th of an inch to protect "sensitive" areas.). The included cord is long enough, but I have to imagine that most people are going to use this in a bathroom where outlets tend to be few and far between, so a longer power cord would be a nice addition in the next version of this product. However, the compact size lends well to travel.
For comparison sake, I tried this on one leg and then conventionally shaved the other. A few days later, the leg that I used the Satinelle Epilator on is still smooth, and the conventionally shaved leg already has stubble growing back in. This is definitely a pro for this device and the epilation process as a whole.
One con that is not necessarily unique to this device, but the epilation process in general is it is not a pain-free endeavor. To boil it down, by epilating, you're essentially ripping hair out from the follicles. The one leg that I shaved essentially put me at my pain tolerance for the session and I was honestly relieved it was done. If you have a low pain tolerance, epilation may not be a fit for you. Googling will show quite a few ways to reduce the pain felt when epilating, including everything from Advil to margaritas!
Overall, the product works very well at what it does and the results are awesome - your shaving areas will never be smoother and you can definitely stretch out the length of time you need to maintain those areas - if you can tolerate the process itself.

More features than imaginable in a toothbrush
on January 1, 2020
Posted by: DonnieZ
from Joliet, IL
The Oral-B Genius X toothbrush is truly the state of the art in personal dental care.
This is my second electric toothbrush and this brush definitely brings the features. It has six different selectable modes of operation, an LED light that provides various status indications (including a selectable color to differentiate your toothbrush from an identical one used by a spouse or roommate), and of course - smartphone app integration.
The smartphone app integration is pretty cool - the brush must have positional sensors in it as the brush knows exactly which quadrant and which section (inside, top, or outside) of the teeth you are brushing. In real time, the app will show you which teeth you are brushing, and where you need to cover to ensure you have brushed all areas of your mouth. It also provides feedback via the app and via flashing/haptic feedback if you are pushing a little too hard as a warning to lighten up a bit. Once your brushing is complete, the app gives you a coverage score and pointers to do better on your next brushing session if any are available.
Included with the brush is the brush itself, 3 brush heads, AC adaptor, a home charging stand, and a travel charging case. The included brush heads are a nice inclusion, as it lowers your cost on consumables for your first few brush head swaps.
The AC adaptor and home stand are pretty standard - a pro for the home stand is it takes up a super low profile - it's not much larger around than the toothbrush itself.
The travel case is actually pretty decent - it will transport the toothbrush body, and two toothbrush heads. I'm not sure if it's designed for multiple users to swap heads, or simply to put a replacement head in the second toothbrush head compartment. Either way, the travel case requires you to bring along your AC adaptor from the home stand. The travel case also has a USB charging port, which allows you to plug in a standard USB cable and charge a USB device while your toothbrush is charging in the case. The travel case also serves as a smartphone holder so you can use it to hold your smartphone in a convenient viewing angle, apparently to use with the Oral-B app when you're on the go.
I travel for work frequently, and therefore bring this toothbrush with me wherever I go. I frequently take only a backpack that contains my laptop, clothes, shoes, and toiletries and this travel case fits, but ideally would be slightly smaller. If taking a carry-on or checking a bag - no worries, it takes up a minuscule amount of space. One glaring miss on the design here is that the travel case does not have a battery. The toothbrush itself will last for about 2 weeks on a charge. Ideally, the travel case would be able to be charged on its own, and then when the toothbrush is in the travel case it would get a charge from the battery within the travel case. With the capacity of the toothbrush itself on a full charge, plus reserve in the travel case -most would be able to leave the AC adaptor at home for all but the longest trips.
One thing I do like about the Oral-B electric toothbrush ecosystem is the variety of replacement heads that are available, as well as the cost of the replacement heads - they are quite affordable and readily available.
There's not too many downsides to this toothbrush, as it is on the high end of both the features and price scale for electric toothbrushes. I will admit that I don't use the app every time I brush, so I wish that it did have an audible alert that let me know when it's time to switch to a different quadrant (I.e. in a 2 minute brushing session, every 30 seconds beep to let me know when to move on. The LED ring will flash to indicate this, but it also flashes for too much pressure so that can be a bit confusing.) The other thing I did note is that when brushing with the app, if I brush for two minutes, then switch modes to "tongue clean" it seems to reset the timer on the session and the app will say that it does not record sessions less than 30 seconds, even though I've been brushing for almost 2 minutes 30 seconds. Lastly, the switching between modes seems to simply adjust the speed of the brush head. It may affect the overall movement of the brush head, but I typically leave it in "Daily Clean' and move to "Tongue Clean" when appropriate.
Overall, if you're looking for the toothbrush with the most techno-features and included options - look no more because this is it.

Works, but I have concerns about durability

As a small USB-A to USB-C adaptor, this thing definitely works. From a functionality standpoint, it works great.
The texture of the device did make it a bit hard to pull out of my MacBook Air USB-C port - it was difficult to get a good grip on this unit.
Also - my larger concern is that I'm afraid when using this type of adaptor it is going to put a lot of stress on the USB-C port and I'm going to end up breaking the adaptor off flush with the computer. I thought I'd like this design, but it seems that with the USB-A port directly attached to the USB-C port, it makes for a somewhat fragile design. I will be sticking with USB-A to USB-C adaptors that have a short pigtail that allows for a bit more flexibility of the larger USB-A connector to move a bit without putting all the stress on the tiny USB-C connector.

The best charger I've had

There's not a ton to say about this device other than it's fabulous at what it does.
I travel a lot for work and this has become my primary charger for my 13" MBP and iPhone. I can plop down wherever I'm working, consume one outlet and this thing will charge my MBP and my iPhone XS max in the fastest manner I've experienced.
It does include a USB-C cable that so far seems to be built well.
This charger does have some heft to it, and I was not able to use it on a United flight as it's own weight kept pulling it out of the outlet, but airplane outlets are notoriously loose.
Otherwise, this is a fantastic charger and allows me to consume only one outlet and stay powered all day - or charge quickly when I need to.

Is the unit able to stand upright on its own?

It is not. The tools themselves have swivel heads that provide no stability if you aren't holding it. It will sit upright if you wall mount the charger.
