Great features - decent performance

Rexing V5C Plus Dashcam
I have been wanting to get a new dashcam for my wife's car and the Rexing V5C Plus advertises the features that I was looking for in a dashcam.
This camera is a 4K front camera unit, with a 1080P cabin camera. In the box is quite a bit of stuff - including two windsheild mounting pucks, a plastic removal tool, the camera, a cigarette lighter power adaptor and power cord. Also included are a 64GB MicroSD card, a MicroSD to standard SD adaptor, and a plethora of manuals.
Though tecnically the camera can be installed with the equipment in the box (cigarette lighter adaptor and cable), I chose to additionally purchase the Rexing Hardwire Kit to enable the parking feature and auto/on off features, as well as to make for the cleanest insatllation possible.
The front camera performance itself is just OK. The files output are 4K, and at first glance the image quality appears to be good, I found in most situations that stopping the video to get a clear output of license plates was more miss than hit, unless you're traveling very slowly or one of the vehicles is completely stopped. This is a real bummer, as most of the time you're going to need a license plate to take any kind of action should someone run off. One saving grace is that the unit can be set to record sound, so you can read out the license plate if you can observe it with your eyes, and then hear that audio back on the video file. At night time, the area immediately in front of your vehicle is somewhat visible, but otherwise the video is largely black. Also, do not make the mistake I made and leave the protective film on both the front and cabin camera lenses
The cabin camera has an extremely wide field of view - from the position I mounted the camera I was very surprised at the amount of the cabin was visible in the cabin camera. Cabin video files are recorded in 1080P. I can see this being an incredibly useful feature if you drive for a ride sharing service where keeping an eye on cabin happenings would be really imporant.
Though not included, you can connect a rear camera for three channel recording (Front, Cabin, and Rear). When connecting the third channel, all cameras record at a maximum resolution of 1080P.
Video files are broken up into one minute clips, and they are further broken down by camera / event type. It's easy to remove the SD card and bring it in to your computer to view the movie files using the included MicroSD to SD adaptor.
One cool feature here is the ability to connect to the camera via Wi-Fi using the Rexing app. I tried this using Apple iOS on an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I had mixed results. To use the app, you first have to download the app from the App store, then you must enable Wi-Fi on the camera which you can do via voice command, or you can use the buttons on the camera to enable Wi-Fi. You then must connect to the Camera's Wi-Fi SSID, give the app permissions to use the local network, and then you can access files and videos on the camera. You can also stream live video to your phone if you find a need for that. The interface is a bit cumbersome, but the functionality is there. I did have some issues with disconnects the first time I used it, but after that it's been fairly usable.
Another cool feature is parking mode - if you have the hardwire kit, the camera will detect the force of an impact to the vehicle, turn on and start recording. Fortunately, this has not happened since I've had the camera but it is a cool feature nonetheless.
Overall, this is a solid dashcam, but I'd like to see better performance from the front camera - especially in the ability to capture detail like license plates in more circumstances. The Wi-Fi feature was kind of hit or miss when I tried it, and one other minor gripe is that the camera still uses a Mini-USB connector on the camera itself. This seems to be common on dashcams but this is one of, if not the only, circumstances where Mini-USB is still in use today.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Stand out with this great desk mic
on October 27, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
I have been looking to up my content creation game for some internal content creation at work, and after reviewing some of my internal streams / videos one of the things I've noticed is that the audio quality on my videos has a bit of an "echo-y" quality to it, likely from using the built in mic on my webcam.
I decied to select the Razer Siren V2 X Mic as it looked like it would foot the bill for my content without breaking the bank - and to be candid, I really liked the way it looked. It seems a lot of the microphones these days are geared toward streamers being on camera and having immediatly discernable qualities so it can be recognized on video. The Razer Siren V2 X has a rather conservative look on my desk and I like that.
The first thing I noticed when I pulled this out of the box was the build quality. It's heavier than I was expecting and has a high-end feel even though the body of the mic is plastic. The metal grate over the mic/windscreen really gives this an appearance of a profesisonal piece of equipment sitting on my desk.
Connection to my Mac Studio was simple, but due to my other peripherial connections, I had to use a USB-A to USB-C converter as I did not have a a free USB-A port. Given that the mic has USB-C on the microphone end, and most newer / high end rigs are going the way of USB-C, that would have been a nice default. On the Mac, you have to go into system preferences and choose the Razer mic as the default input device at which point all input comes through this mic.
Though the microphone has a USB-C cable, it does have somewhat of a proprietary cable - the USB-C port is recessed and the cable end is moulded to look like part of the mic body - should the cable need to be replaced, I think you'd have to search for a cable that would fit the narrow opening for the USB-C port.
Included with the mic is a round desk stand with a ball mount, allowing you to sit the mic on your desk and adjust to practically an infinite number of positions. The mic itself has a glowing green mute button, and will turn red when it is muted, which is a nice touch. On the Mac at least, this is a local mute to the mic, it does not trigger mute on any of my applications (i.e. on Zoom, the applicaiton does not show mute, but the mic does not send any audio input to the computer when the mic is muted.) The mic also has a local gain control knob, which does not have stop on either end, so you can scroll it infinitely in either direction - so you have to use your input level meter or have someone on the other end of a conference app tell you how you are sounding to get the level dialed in.
Performance wise, this is a huge upgrade to my streaming setup. My first test was on a Zoom meeting - and immediately people said I sounded different. Doing A/B comparisons between the built in webcam mic and this mic were night and day. This mic had zero echo, and no matter how far away from the mic I moved my desk chair, I was consistently told it sounded like I was speaking right into the microphone. It's excellent at weeding out background noises as well - my upset toddler at my office door was completely inaudible when using this mic.
For the price, this is a no brainer. Even if you're not a content creator and simply want to up your conference call game, this is an excelelnt way to set yourself apart from the pack of those with simple webcam or built in laptop mics.

Excellent choice for a single area humidifier
on October 19, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
I selected this unit as we needed a new humidifier for our master bedroom. With winter coming up, I run the humidifier 24/7 from probably October to March so we need a unit that is going to be up to the task. The Boneco H300 so far seems to be a unit that is up to that task.
Setting up the unit took less than 5 minutes from opening the box to being functional. THere's not a lot of excess packaging, which is good. Set up largely consisted of removing the unit from the box, removing the shipping tape, removing the plastic from the filter, and filling it with water.
The mobile app was very easy to set up - hold the knob in on the humidifier to put it in pairing mode, and then open the app and the humidifier was found. All controls are available via the mobile app.
Operation is simple - push the knob to turn on the unit and turn the knob to adjust the output, or use the mobile app. Running it on setting three, I find that i get about two days out of the water reservoir before needing replenishing. The unit shuts itself down when water is low so it doesn't run needlessly.
There's also a little tray in the back where you can put fragrance oils to be diffused as the unit runs, which is a cool feature. We have whole home scenting, but I can put a bit extra in this tray to give a boost to the bedroom.
There are two things I absolutely love about this unit - first, it is almost silent in operation on all but the highest output settings - great for sleeping. Second, the mobile app is dead easy to set up - and most of all requires no account setup which is quite refreshing these days as everyone seems to want you to create an account for everything.
The biggest issue with humidifiers/air purifiers is consumable costs. I have found replacement filters for this unit for anywhere between $45-60 for the air filter, and I haven't yet found the replacement for the humidification mat. I'm not sure how long these will last, but they're probably worth changing once a season at least - so keep this in mind when you figure in the overall cost of this unit.
Overall though, this is a great humidification/purification unit with easy-to-use controls, great features, and great humidification performance.

The charger you didn't know you needed until now
on October 10, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
The Insignia 4-in-1 desktop charger is quite possibly the perfect charging accessory for your Apple enabled devices.
I will start out by saying I absolutely love this charger. It looks great on my desk, and it keeps all of my devices charged without messy cords, which is my thing - keeping a clean desktop.
The device itself is a combination of satin silver finish and white base that houses two Qi compliant chargers with a chrome upright that houses the Apple Watch and Magsafe charger. The base charger for Airpods has a space that is the size and shape of an AirPods Pro case, as well as another flat spot that can house another Qi compliant device. As mentioned, the upright is a "T" shaped chrome piece that holds the Apple Watch charger as well as the circular MagSafe charger. The MagSafe charger is a bit large, but houses a fan that will come on when charging creates heat and the charging elements need additional cooling.
This piece looks great on my desk and keeps everything going all day long. If I bring my phone back in and I need a quicker charge, there's a "Turbo" button that you can press which will charge the devices faster. Most of the time though, I do not find myself using this, as the regular charge mode is enough to keep my phone going all day long, and have 100% when I am done at my office desk for the day. The MagSafe mount rotates so you can choose the angle you want your phone to display at - and with the new always on display on the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max, this is a pretty cool feature.
If I had one negative to say about this charger, there's been a couple of times the fan that turns on to cool the MagSafe charging element will come on and will not shut off until I power cycle the charger - which is no big deal.
Even with the listed minor issue with the fan, this is my absolute favorite charging device I've owned and it's a home run in my book.

Strong and secure MagSafe Charging
on October 10, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
This is a handy little gadget that anyone owning a modern iPhone that supports MagSafe charging should have in their car.
The Velox MagSafe charger is a fantastic mount/charging combo that delivers on all accounts. I needed a device that I can easily pop in and out of rental cars, as I'm on the road a lot for work and this device fit the requirement.
The setup is pretty simple - you flip the lever on the base and stick the suction cup on the window. Once it's in position, you flip the lever on the base back, creating the suction necessary to keep it on the window. I have yet to have this device fall off the window - even before flipping the lever, the suction cup feels like it would hold the mount securely to the window. The suction cup does have a "sticky" surface and is pretty thick. I don't see this thing wearing out anytime soon. Also included is a flat mount that you can adhere to a textured dash component that gives the suction cup a flat surface to stick to in case you want to mount this on the dash.
The magnets in the Magsafe charging surface are really strong as well - I have never felt that the phone is going to fall off of the mount.
Charging is handled via the USB-C cord that is coming out of the charger. If your car has USB-C, then you could probably plug this straight in to the car - but I used the included cigarette lighter to USB-C dongle. Charging is only rated at 7.5W, but it's enough to keep the phone topped off in the car.
All in all, this is a quality product that I foresee using for quite a while.

Funky looking, but feels good
on September 26, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
The Logitech Lift mouse is probably the most unconventional-looking pointing device I've seen in a while. Do not let the crazy appearance turn you off - you have to try this mouse for yourself and you will immediately see how comfortable it is.
When I reach for this mouse, it's almost a comforting experience - the mouse is ready to meet your hand in the position that you would naturally place your hand and wrist in. There's no twisting of the wrist that I didn't even realize I was doing until I reached back for my conventional mouse.
This mouse is very comfortable to use, but does take some getting used to. It is advertised as a good fit for those who have small to medium hands, but I consider myself as having larger hands and the ergonomics and fit are good. The button placement for your index and middle finger are very natural, and the buttons have a very soft click that provides slightly less feedback than I personally expected. There is a scroll wheel that has tactile feedback in the form of detents as you scroll and provides excellent feedback. Just above where the thumb rests, is a set of buttons that act as "back" and "forward" buttons in web browsers, which have proven to be quite useful as this is something I haven't had since I've been a full Mac convert.
As with a lot of peripherals today, it has the ability to pair via Bluetooth to three different devices - and this is great as I can pair it with my Mac Studio, MacBook Pro, or the iPad Pro. A small button on the bottom toggles which Bluetooth profile is active and this works flawlessly.
As a long time Mac user, I've become accustomed to using the gestures that are available with the Magic Mouse. I was able to replicate some of these features by installing the Logitech Options software, which gives you some control over the buttons near the thumb. You can change their functionality to practically anything, including some keyboard shortcuts that I've mapped for desktop switching. The Logi options software also allows you to create application specific button mappings if you want to get that deep. Unfortunately, it's another piece of bloatware on my system, but this may be worth it to allow the button reprogramming.
The battery is a single AA, which is stated on the box to last two years. If so, this is amazing battery life.
Overall this is a great mouse. I wish they would have built-in horizontal scrolling to the scroll wheel, and the gestures from the Apple mouse were more easily replicated on this device, but the comfort this mouse provides is definitely worth the trade-off in features.

Outstanding value for a quality USB-C charger
on September 23, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
These days you can never have enough USB-C charging blocks around. USB-C is here, and it's going to be here for a while - and the Insignia 30W Compact Wall Charger works great at charging all of my tech.
To be frank, I selected this to have in my kitchen on the counter where we tend to have devices piling up and needing to charge. It's typically always got a USB-C to Lightning cable attached, ready for anyone to plug in their phone conveniently.
Lets get to the charging performance. Being the techie I am, I have a USB Current tester. In all cases, I could get at least 30 watts out of this charger as advertised. When charging the 16" M1 MacBook Pro, it delivered 20V at 1.5 amps. When charging my iPhone 12 Pro Max from a battery percentage in the teens, it delivered almost 10 volts at 2.5A. Doing the math on those numbers shows a full 30W output.
A couple of features I like about this charger are the fact that it does not get overly warm when delivering full 30W charging - which tells me its either well insulated or is working efficiently. Another cool feature that not a lot of folks may notice - is the plug is not polarized, so you can plug it into an outlet in either orientation.
If I had to say one negative thing about this charger, it is a bit thick - and if you have certain types of outlets or power strips, the size of this unit may interfere with plugging in something to an adjacent outlet.
Overall though, I see adding a few of these around the house for general charging needs.

The charger you need for today's tech demands
on September 12, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
As someone who is fully immersed in tech as well as on the road for work, I live and die by good chargers. When I go looking for a new charger, I always look towards Anker first. My experience with their products has been none other than top-notch, and the Anker 735 3-Port USB charger is surely no exception.
As most of us are nowadays, we’re accumulating more USB-C charging cords. USB-C is great and offers many advantages, including non-directional plugs and faster charging. Being on the road, I try and take the minimum number of cables and chargers with me, and this device allows me to cut the number of chargers I take by one.
It has two USB-C ports, one designated for laptops and another designated for tablets/phones. It also has a 22.5W USB-A port that I can use to charge an accessory. In a hotel, I use this overnight to charge my iPad, iPhone, and my Airpods or some other device. It’s small enough in my travel bag that I can take it with me and pull it out to give a quick boost to my iPhone while I’m at a client site – An hour with this will take my iPhone 12 Pro Max from under 20% to well over 80% using a USB-C cord. I have not timed it, but using this to charge my iPad Pro is very fast as well via USB-C. In a pinch, I can even use this to top off my 16” MacBook Pro, but I usually reserve that for the included Apple charger and use this device to charge everything else I need for the day.
Of note, when charging multiple devices, you still only have 65W of charging current total - the port labeled for a laptop does get priority for faster charging, and a lower current comes out of the USB-C port labeled for the phone. This is a pretty good trade-off, though, for the size of this device. The other huge pro here is that it has foldable prongs that plug into the wall, which reduces the size of this device in your travel kit. The prongs are also not polarized, which is good for charging in tight spots.
Overall, this is a powerhouse charger that performs exceptionally well for its size and the density of charging ports it provides. It’s a home run in my book and a no-brainer to buy if you need quality, high-density charging on the go.

As big air fryers go, this is one to look at.
on September 12, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
The Bella 8Qt air fryer is a staple in our home, especially when having a toddler around. We use it practically every day. It’s one of those small appliances that has found a permanent home on our kitchen counter. We use it that often.
The Bella 8Qt air fryer has a lot to offer when compared with similar appliances. The 8-quart capacity is great when cooking for our entire family – we can cook whole meals without having to cook in batches as we did when we had a smaller air fryer. It’s perfect for cooking toddler-friendly foods like chicken nuggets, tater tots, and French fries, as well as cooking more complex recipes like air fryer chimichangas.
Getting started with the air fryer is easy. Take it out of the box, plug it in, and technically you’re ready to go. I did give everything in the basket a good wipe down, but it still had a “new” smell that was present for the first 20 minutes or so – you may want to run it empty until this goes away. The touch screen control is easy to use once you get the hang of it. There are really only a few spots on the screen that are touch sensitive – intuitively, you want to touch the selection that you want, but in reality, only the power button, arrow keys, plus, and minus keys are touch reactive. You are scrolling through your different cooking options, not touching them directly. If your hands are wet or greasy, sometimes the buttons aren’t as responsive as you’d like them to be, but you learn to work around this quickly.
One feature I thought I’d really like was the included divider – you can divide the basket in half either horizontally or vertically to keep two different foods separate. I’ve tried it both ways, and unfortunately, the food does not seem to cook as well as it does when you do not include the divider. I’m not completely sold on not using it, but I find that food just cooks faster and crispier when you don’t use it.
The matte black finish looks good on our dark granite countertops, and overall, this is a conservative-looking appliance that should fit well with most décor.
If you’re looking for a large-capacity air fryer, I recommend you put this one at the top of your list for consideration.

A no-frills upgrade for your online meetings
on August 8, 2022
Posted by: DonnieZ
These headphones are a perfect upgrade if you're looking to elevate your conference call experience from built-in mic/speakers, earbuds, or perhaps an existing wired headset.
Pros: Very light, light clamping force, comfortable for all-day use, battery life, USB-C charging.
Cons: So-So sound quality for music, construction quality seems a bit dubious.
After using these phones for a while, I've come to like them for what they are - a great tool to elevate the online meeting experience. The sound quality for conference calls is excellent - but when it comes to listening to music, I will grab another set of over-the-ear headphones. Music sounds OK to have ambient noise in your ears, but the sound quality is lacking.
The construction of these headphones is plastic, and they do have a bit of give so you can move one of the phones either in front of or behind your ear to have an outside conversation and the headband will flex enough to still be comfortable. These are comfortable for long sessions without fatiguing your ears or your head - the padded earcups are quite nice. I do find that they do shift on my head when I move my head around, but as these are not noise canceling that require a good seal over your ear, this isn't a deal breaker. Overall though, these are something I'm hanging on my desk and would not feel comfortable frequently traveling with as I'm not sure the build quality will hold up without leaving you with broken headphones.
The boom mic with auto-mute function is pretty cool - when you're ready to speak, the mic flips down from the left earcup and unmutes the audio. When you're done, you can flip it back up, and it becomes almost invisible in the headphone so you can listen to audio without the mic in front of you, also assuring you that you are in fact muted.
I paired these with my Mac Studio - I did not need to use the included Bluetooth adaptor. The Bluetooth connection has been flawless - no interruptions in sound and no interruptions with any of my other peripherals.
Overall, if you're looking for a good set of over-the-ear headphones to slay online meetings all day, I'd give this set serious consideration.

It is not. The tools themselves have swivel heads that provide no stability if you aren't holding it. It will sit upright if you wall mount the charger.
