A Truly Smart Robot Vacuum with Superior Suction
on June 11, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Roomba S9 is a premium robot vacuum that comes at a very high price. The vacuum works extremely well, but is still not perfect (which feels rather surprising due to its high cost). It is rather loud and makes a degree of varying noises as it moves over different surfaces. It typically transitions well as it moves from hard floors over area rugs and across carpet, but because the noises change with each surface - it often sounds as though it is stuck - when it is actually working just fine. You can reduce the suction for a quieter clean, but it is still rather noisey. I recommend setting the schedule to clean when you are not at home. If there are any errors, the Roomba will pause, return to base, and you will get a notification through the app.
We have two dogs and a 4 year old - which means that we have a lot of clutter for the Roomba to navigate around. The vacuum does an exceptional job at finding and tracing the edge of walls - And, it had no trouble mapping out our main floor. It took about 3 trips through the house to have it fully mapped. Once the iRobot knew its way around, we were able to draw boundaries and name each room within the app. Now, we are able to tell Alexa to vacuum a specific room and the Roomba does the job and returns to the base when it is done. The roomba is actually so smart that it can pause the job if the dust bin becomes full, or if it needs to recharge. Once these issues have been addressed, the vacuum can actually continue working right from where it left off.
In my opinion, iRobot has done a poor job of marketing. Even the information on the box left me wondering what was new about the S9 (and why it cost so much more money). The main difference appears to be that it has 40X the suction as the previous 600 series. 40 times the suction sounds too good to be true, but I can confirm that it does an excellent job vacuuming carpeted areas. When I carry the Roomba to our carpeted upstairs, it instantly knew that it was in a new area (not the mapped out downstairs) and it started to make a new map. I very much like that the robot leaves nice parallel vacuum lines in the carpet (instead of a bunch of crazy zig zag lines from driving around all willy-nilly). See the attached pictures which show how nice the vacuum lines look after it’s very first attempt at vacuuming our carpet.
What I particularly appreciate is that the S9 is designed for homes with pets and those with allergies. The vacuum does a truly wonderful job at sucking pet hair off of our wood floors and also out of our various area rugs and carpet. While it cleans, it also filters 99% of mold, pollen, and other dust that triggers allergies.
While the vacuum does a great job at navigating the house, it does occasionally get stuck. It absolutely cannot handle shag carpet. If you have carpet, or an area rug with long fibers - be aware that even this high end robot cannot vacuum such areas. Surprisingly though, we have not had any trouble with toys, shoe laces, dog bowls, area rugs, bathroom rugs, stools chairs, tables, etc.
If you can afford the Roomba S9, I would actually recommend saving up the additional cost to get the S9+ as that model is able to empty its own dust bin 30 times! It even keeps all of the dust contained when it transfers into the larger bin that is built into the home base. The S9+ will truly be trouble free cleaning. With the S9, you are required to empty the bin almost every time the vacuum runs. Luckly, the default setting will keep the robot working even when the dust bin is full...Though I recommend changing that setting so that the Roomba will return to its home base when the dust bin needs to be changed.
Be aware that filters, rollers, and the corner sweeping brush all need to be replaced. Generic filters can be found, but here are the parts that you will need to locate:
Replacement Parts:
- Roomba S Series Replenishment Pack (contains replacement rollers, filters, & corner sweeping brushes) (Best Buy info: Model:4646124. SKU:6352888)
- Roomba S Series Filter 3 Pack (iRobot Item # 4643682)
- Roomba S Series Corner Sweeping Brush - 3 Pack (iRobot Item # 4646123)

Heavy Bass & Generic Design
on June 7, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
If you like heavy bass and have never had a problem with the fit of average earbuds, then Skullcandy's Indy are for you. The Bluetooth range is excellent (about 40 feet indoors) and the touch controls ensure that you don't have to press the buds deep into your ear to change the track, or to adjust the volume. They will play a full 4 hours before they need to be returned into their case which can then fully charge them 3 additional times (for a total playback of about 16 hours).
Personally, I have narrow ear canals and simply could not get the earbuds to stay in. Even while sitting motionless at my desk they would suddenly pop out of my ears. I added my own 3rd party rubber tips from my wired earbuds, but even then - the earbuds would simply not stay in. The design is rather bulky and it appears that Skullcandy made very little effort to find a way to keep them in your ears. They come with no rubber fins and no way to hook onto your ear (or rest inside the ear). They are only held in place by the rubber tips and because they are rather bulky, their weight causes them to lean outwards and eventually fall out.
...I personally would not be able to use these while working out, or while on my bike as they would fall to the ground and be lost.
I was also taken back by just how bass heavy they are. I found the bass even more amplified than my over-the-ear Beats Studio headphones. (Not stronger bass, but more pronounced - which I found annoying.) I quickly went to my equalizer to lower the bass so that I could find a more suitable balance with mids & highs.
While I was initially excited that the Indy features touch controls, I found that they only responded about 75% of the time. When listening to music in the office, it wasn't a big deal - but, when working out or when on my bike, I simply couldn't take the time needed to fiddle with them until they respond the way I intended.
Another distraction was just how much ambient noise they blocked out with the rubber tips. Because they sit so deep in the ear canal, most surrounding noise is blocked out. This is all well and good until somebody is trying to talk to you. I found that I had to remove them in order to communicate at all. And, when using them to talk on the phone, you cannot hear your own voice - which is odd and distracting. Unfortunately, Skullcandy did not program them to amplify or playback any of your own audio/voice when you are speaking on the phone - which is an unsettling experience.
Apple's Airpods (which seem to be the most popular Bluetooth earbuds at the current time) are more expensive, but I believe they are worth the extra expense. They are smaller, have a longer battery life, fit much more snug and with a lower profile, they don't mute out all ambient noise, and they take up less space - even inside of their case.
The wireless headphone experience truly is fantastic. If you love Bass and if earbuds generally fit well in your ears, you will enjoy the Indy.
...But, I hope that Skullcandy takes the time to redesign their wireless earbuds to offer a better fit, a lower profile, and a more balanced listening experience.
***See the attached pictures for a visual comparison with the size and fit of the Airpods***

Only Fun for Kids
on April 30, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Instant print cameras have been around since the Polaroid Corporation introduced the Land Camera Model 95 back in 1948.  And while it may seem like instant print photos are a gimmick that fell out of fashion with the invention of digital photography, printable photos have become big business once again (as it is a way for camera & film companies to ensure consistent revenue in a similar way to how they once sold film).
The Canon Ivy Cliq uses Zink paper which requires no ink.  (Zink actually stands for Zero Ink.)  Instead, the photo paper is comprised of multiple heat sensitive layers containing dye crystals that display various colors when they melt.  The camera delivers varying intensities of heat which quickly results in a colorful picture.    It is important to note that while many companies (such as HP, Polaroid, Lifeprint, Fujifilm, & Canon) offer Zink cameras – all Zink paper is made by one company: Zink Holdings.  They created the underlying technology – which has been licensed out to several companies.  So, while physical cameras or printers may vary in quality, all of the photo paper is essentially the same.
Just how good is Canon’s Ivy Cliq?
Well, the Ivy Cliq is Canon’s least expensive Zink camera coming in at just $99.99.  And while it is affordable – it is basically a toy.  It is large, made from bright colorful plastic, weighs practically nothing, has very limited features, and prints 5 megapixel images onto stickers.  It works just well enough to be passable.
It feels as though Cannon focused too heavily on creating a flashy new device that looks fun and lost sight of actually making a good camera.  Where they really fall flat is their halfhearted attempt to make the Cliq a digital camera.  The device can accept a Micro SD memory card - and when one is inserted, it saves the picture as a digital file.  But, what is absurd is that a digital picture is only saved if there is Zink paper in the camera.  If you are out of Zink paper (or simply don’t want to print the picture) the camera will not save the digital file.  So – don’t expect to use the Cliq as a digital camera.  If you want a picture, you have to pay Canon for Zink Paper.
- Having a Micro SD card inserted also allows you to re-print the last photo that was taken – But, even this has a caveat.  If you power off the camera, it is no longer able to re-print the last image (even though it is saved on the memory card).  This is also frustrating as the device could have had the ability to work as a photo printer – if it could print pictures saved to the memory card.  This could have led to more money for canon (as it would require customers to purchase more Zink paper), but it would have interfered with leading customers to purchase the Canon Ivy Mini Photo Printer (which is also $99.99).
There is a workaround to using the Cliq as a digital camera:
If you would like to save a digital image to a Micro SD card, but do not want to print a photo (or are out of paper) – you have two options:
1)  Each package of Zink photo paper comes with a blue card that ejects before pictures are printed.  You can load this blue card into the camera and take a picture.  The photo will save as a digital file and the blue paper will eject as though a photo is being printed.
2) Re-use a Zink Photo Sheet.  You can re-use the Zink photo sheets (although I wouldn’t recommend doing this too many times with a single sheet).  If you load a photo that has already been taken, the camera will print a new photo right over top of the previous image, but the new picture will be saved as a new digital file.
NOTE:  Both of these options work, but it is annoying having to wait 55 seconds for each picture to “print” and save before you can take a new picture.  It is also annoying that there is no screen on the camera.
I do appreciate is that Canon has kept both the camera and the picture refills affordable.  Each 2 x 3 inch photo sticker is just 50 cents – which matches the price of virtually all other Zink camera brands.  Sadly, buying larger quantities of refills does not save any money.
Though the picture cost is reasonable, it is frustrating that money is wasted on accidental pictures.  The shutter button offers almost no tactile feedback and it is extremely easy to press accidentally.  Almost every person who has used my Cliq has inadvertently pressed the button while holding the camera (which is frustrating as it wastes money and 10% of the camera’s picture capacity).
Here are some other things customers should know:
-          The camera does not have any way of indicating how many pictures you have left.  Luckily the Zink paper is not sensitive to light – so, if you want to know how many pictures you have left – simply open the back and count the remaining sticker sheets.
-          There is a rechargeable battery, but again – no way to determine just how much power you have left.
-          The Cliq does have a flash, but it cannot be triggered manually and it only turns itself on in very dark conditions.  The flash results in better pictures than most other lighting conditions, so it may as well be on all the time.
-          The front features a tiny convex selfie mirror.  It is laughably small, but it actually works.  What you can see in the reflection, does end up in the photo.
While the Ivy Cliq is fun, I would only recommend it for kids.  Instead, I would recommend the Canon Ivy Mini Photo Printer.  It is the same price and allows you to print better quality photos taken from your phone.  And, because it prints phone pictures – you can actually choose pictures you like and edit them to your liking before you print.
NOTE:  The Ivy Cliq+ is 8 megapixels and has a much improved flash.  But, it does cost $159.99.  I would still recommend the Canon Ivy Mini Photo Printer over the Cliq+.
Pros:
+ Takes a digital copy of the image that prints (if a Micro SD card is inserted)
+ The most recently taken picture can be reprinted with one button press – this allows you to share identical photo pictures with friends
+ Photo prints are actually stickers
+ Photos are thin and stick well, but can also generally be peeled off of surfaces without causing damage
+ Only 50 cents per picture (as compared to classic Polaroid pictures which cost $2.00 each)
+ Zinc Photo Paper is not sensitive to light (in the same way as film).  This means you can open the back of the camera without worry of ruining film.
+ No ink or development chemicals to worry about
+ Allows double exposure prints  (Simply re-load a picture back into the camera and take a 2nd picture that prints over top of the first.  Fun & artsy!)
+ Photos print quickly (~55 seconds) and do not require time to develop (compared to Polaroid pictures which take up to 10 minutes to develop)
+ Rechargeable battery built in
+ Built in flash
+ Selfie mirror actually works reasonably well
+ Camera is available in several vibrant and fun colors
Cons:
- Camera does not save digital images unless zinc photo paper is installed in the camera **NOTE:  There is a workaround for this.  See review above.
- Shutter button is far too easy to press.  It offers no tactile feedback and it is very easy to accidentally take a picture (which is a waste of 50 cents).
- Camera does not have a screen
- Photo resolution is only 5 megapixels
- Camera does not have any indication of how many pictures are left (although you can take the paper out and count the sheets)
- Flash is automatic only and cannot be manually turned on or triggered
- Flash only turns on in very dark conditions
- Once the camera is powered off, it can no longer re-print the last image that was taken (even when the image is saved on a memory card)
- Image quality on the Zinc Photo Paper is fairly poor (this seems to be related to the 5 megapixel resolution of the camera)
- Water eats through the top layer of the photo paper destroying the image underneath.  If rain touches an image, or if liquid is spilled on a photo – they will be ruined.  Keep in mind, these are stickers – so they may end up on notebooks or other areas that kids might splash or get wet.
- The back of the stickers are difficult to peel away (there should be a slit on the back of the paper – instead of needing to be peeled at the corners)
- No battery indicator
- Does not include a Micro SD memory card
- The cost of Zink photo paper is the same price regardless of the quantity you buy (50 cents per 2x3 inch sheet)

A Visual & Audio Delight
on April 20, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Choosing as Bluetooth speaker can be difficult as there are just SO many available. But, Sony has really done an excellent job with this one. Not only does it sound exceptional, but even looks incredible. The colored LED lights that surround the speaker are bright and truly add to the enjoyment of the music experience. And, surprisingly, the white strobe lights seem even brighter than the full-sized party speakers in the same product line (specifically the GTK-XB72).
Up to 100 of these speakers can be linked together in a party chain – which would be truly amazing. But more realistically – if you sync two of them, they can play in stereo. I was Extremely pleased to find that the party chain can also include other Sony speaker models. I linked this SRS-XB32 with the huge GTK-XB72 (see pictures) and was absolutely blown away. The light colors synced up – there was no audio delay (or mismatch / echo) – It was absolutely spectacular. It literally put a smile on my face and I was dancing around until my 4 year old came downstairs to inform me that my music was too loud and to shame me for not inviting him to my 9:00 am dance party.
As far as Bass goes. I feel as though they have bragged too much about the bass on this speaker. The bass is good, but a speaker of this size really cannot produce impressive bass. I don’t really think “EXTRA BASS” should be plastered all over the box in giant letters. If you want deep bass, you really need to buy a larger speaker. But again, for a speaker of this size – it is pretty good. If you are holding the speaker, or sitting right next to it- I think you will be truly pleased. But, if you are playing music in the kitchen, or the family room – you won’t be particularly impressed.
The wireless range of this speaker is truly great! I left my cellphone on my kitchen table and carried my speaker all around the house. I honestly could not find any room within my 2,500 sqft house where the speaker stopped working. Even when I was on the 2nd floor!
Outside I found that I could easily walk 50+ feet from the speaker (with perfect line of site) before the music cut out. It is important to note that our body seems to block Bluetooth signals the quickest (more so than interior walls). If you have the phone in your hand and you turn your back to the speaker, you can go about 30 feet before the music cuts out.
The only failures of this speaker:
1) For some reason this speaker does not have physical buttons that would allow you to change the song/track. Sometimes this function shares the Volume + and – buttons, but that’s not even the case here. To change the track, you will need to use the source of your music. You can also use gesture controls within the Fiestable app, but this does not work well at all.
2) This speaker does not accept a Micro SD card, or playback from a USB memory stick. Generic Bluetooth speakers from china almost always let you play music from a Micro SD card. This is helpful when you are at the beach or the pool. Most of the time you want to keep your phone away from water. At the very least, controlling your phone with wet hands is nearly impossible. Since this speaker is essentially water proof (IPX7 which means 3 feet for 30 minutes) – it would be nice if it could play music from a memory card so that the user never has to worry about wireless range, their phone getting wet, or the chance the speaker will answer a phone call while they’re trying to play music.
Weirdly this speaker has a drum kit sound effects mode (which they call “Party Booster”). To turn this mode on, press and hold both Vol + & - until the power light flashes. Then you can hit the top, bottom, front, left, or right of the speaker to hear different drum noises. The Party Booster mode doesn’t work particularly well as you have to hit the speaker pretty hard to play the noises. The harder you hit the speaker, the louder the sound effect will be. You can use this mode while music plays, but the sounds almost never fit well with the song playing. I honestly have no idea what the point of is, but I suppose it’s fun to have the feature as a bonus. (I just hope that this feature didn’t increase the price. It is definitely not worth paying extra for.)
Overall this speaker is 100% worth purchasing. And, if you have the money, seriously - purchase more than one. They truly are amazing when synced together.
It is awesome that the battery lasts a full 24 hours. I don’t even know how long it takes to charge because I’ve never drained the battery. I’ve been able to use it for days then simply plug it in at night. It’s a bit heavy, but the weight is totally worth it as the unit can be used as a back-up battery. Simply plug a charging cable into the USB port on the back and you can charge other devices.
Oh, and using the speaker to answer phone calls actually works very well. I’m able to walk around the kitchen while talking to my wife and she said I sounded great the whole time.
Truly an awesome speaker!
Pros:
+ Great wireless range. With perfect line of site, range is about 50 feet. Otherwise, the range is just beyond the standard 30 feet.
+ Waterproof to 1 meter (3.28 feet) for up to 30 minutes (IPX7 rating)
+ Audio remains crisp & clear even at high volumes
+ Decent bass compared to the physical size of the speaker
+ Live Sound mode works well making the audio feel more wide and hollow
+ Can be used as a back-up battery to charge other devices (using the rear USB port)
+ NFC (Near Field Communication) feature makes Bluetooth pairing very easy
+ 3.5 mm audio input
+ Built in pin-hole microphone works decently for answering phone calls
+ Rubber feet on the bottom keeps the unit from sliding around and protects from scratches
+ LED lights are not hidden behind the speaker grill
+ All lights are bright and clear – they truly look fantastic
+ Lights are easily controlled via Sony Music Center App (both color & flashing options)
+ Multiple speakers can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth
+ Can connect to other Sony Speaker models. For example Sony’s full sized GTK-XB72.
+ Light colors sync up when multiple speakers are linked
+ Can play in stereo when synced to a 2nd speaker
+ When the unit is hit on different sides it makes drum kit sound effects (this mode must be turned on by holding Vol + & - buttons until the power indicator flashes)
+ Rubberized exterior for easy grip (even when wet)

Cons:
- Is NOT able to play music from a Micro SD card, or USB memory stick
- There are no physical track forward/backwards buttons. Only Volume Up/Down.
- Speaker’s grill is covered with cloth mesh. It looks nice, but can get dirty and is harder to clean.
- No loops or clip points. There is no strap / no easy way to carry this speaker on the go.
- Heavy (but the 24 hour battery (that can also charge other devices) is worth the weight)
- The instruction manual does an awful job at explaining product features
- Limited salt-water resistance
- Gesture Controls within the Fiestable app do not work well at all
- Fiestable App is fairly cumbersome and tricky to learn
- Voice prompts are only available in English
- Battery status only functions when the unit is powered on.
- Battery status is verbal only (which is weird for a speaker covered in lights. It seems like a visual option would have worked well.)
- Battery status can only tell you when the battery is Fully, 70%, 50%, 20%, or needs to be charged
- Comes with a USB charging cable, but now power brick (to plug into a wall)
- No optical, or component input

Monstrous Size, Sound, & Value
on April 9, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
At first glance, the $350 launch price seemed a bit daunting to me, but I quickly realized that this speaker is a much better value than a lot of the smaller counter-top Bluetooth speakers offered by companies such as Bose or Marshall.  This speaker is a true beast!  Not only does it offer monstrous sound and thumping bass, but it is truly versatile.  The speaker looks great standing next to an entertainment center and also works very well as a party speaker.
The speaker is easy to set up and simple to use.  While Sony tries to force the use of their Music Center App, it seems at least some of the time the typical Bluetooth pairing will get you up and running.  But, if you are having trouble pairing - you will want to connect specifically through the Sony app (which does work quite well).  The app is also the easiest way to control the various lights - providing color & flash/strobe options.
It is worth noting that this speaker is not made for mounting.  If you are a DJ, or are purchasing this speaker for use at events, there is no easy way to mount to a pole or hang on a wall.  This speaker will either be standing vertically, or laying horizontally (having rubber feet for both options).  Multiple speakers can synch via Bluetooth, but the shape of the speaker tilts upwards and is not a perfect box - meaning that speakers are not easy to stack (vertically or horizontally).  Outdoor use can be cumbersome as the speaker is not water resistant and as the cord is only 5 feet long.  The volume is loud enough to set the speaker anywhere, but because this speaker puts on a light show - you actually want it to be seen.  I suggest having an extension cord handy.
Interestingly, while the cabinet appears to have a tweeter in all 4 corners, there are actually only 3 (each 2 inches in size).  The 4th tweeter is non-functioning and simply makes the speaker look balanced visually.  When the speaker is standing vertically, only the top two tweeters play audio.  When the speaker is laid down horizontally, the speaker automatically adjusts moving the audio to what then becomes the top two tweeters.
I tested the speaker outdoors - as I intend to use it for summer BBQs and block parties.  The speaker had absolutely no trouble filling our entire cul-de-sac with clear audio and decent bass. I truly am impressed by how well this speaker works both indoors and out.  (Just keep in mind that it is not waterproof.)  It functions well at both low & high volumes.  The live music function is a noticeable change, but can leave the vocals sounding hollow & distant.  I appreciate that it is an option, but I would assume that most people will want to leave the audio unaltered.
While the Bluetooth is generally convenient, the connection quickly cuts out if it does not have direct line of sight.  30 feet of wireless range may seem like plenty of space, but at a block party, on a dance floor, or even inside the house - this is fairly limited.  Keep in mind that you will not be able to wander away from the speaker - the phone will need to stay near by.  And, this model does not have any slot to hold your phone/tablet.  The speaker also does not have a standard 3.5mm audio input.  Instead, it has the red & white component input (and output).  You may be able to use the 1/4" microphone input (if you have an adapter), but that is probably not the best option as your main audio input.
…If you don’t want to worry about wireless range (or worry about your phone ringing through the speaker in the middle of a party), using the radio is also an option that works well.
The colored LED lights work well and look quite nice.  I appreciate that the LED strips are no longer located behind the wire mesh.  They are now unobstructed & nicely frame the speaker.  By default, the lights continue to cycle even when the audio is not playing, but the lights can be controlled with both a physical button and also within the app.  The white strobe lights are less impressive as they are really not all that bright.
I do wish the speaker could be powered by an internal battery – even if it was only a couple of hours, but overall I think this speaker is a great value and is conveniently versatile.  If its physical bulk does not bother you, it is worth purchasing.  And, if you want to save some money, previous models are still sold for a lot less.
Pros:
+ Works well both indoors and out
+ Audio remains crisp & clear even at high volumes
+ Noticeably rich bass boost
+ NFC (Near Field Communication) feature makes pairing (via Bluetooth 4.2) very easy
+ Speaker automatically adjusts which two tweeters are used to play audio (depending on if the speaker is standing vertically, or lying horizontally)
+ 1/4" inch Microphone Input allows the speaker to be used for karaoke, or to make announcements at an event
+ Microphone has its own volume knob
+ Built in pin-hole microphone works decently for answering phone calls
+ Two built in Handles (top & bottom) aid in carrying
+ Lights are easily controlled via Sony Connect App (both color & flashing options)
+ Multiple speakers can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth
+ Light colors sync up when multiple speakers are linked
+ Can play via Bluetooth or from files on a USB memory stick
+ Multiple audio sources (phones/tablets) can be linked simultaneously
Cons:
- No optical input
- No battery
- No bracket or attachment to aid in mounting
- Heavy (about 26 lbs)
- No slot for holding phone, or tablet
- No Remote Control (which was included in previous models)
- Not water resistant or water proof
- White Strobe Lights are not very bright
- Speaker's shape does not allow them to be easily stacked
- Cord is only 5 feet long (which can make it difficult to use outdoors)
- Bluetooth range is problematic. 30 feet is only with perfect line of sight.
- Live Music mode (at times) leaves music sounding hollow and vocals sounding distant & muted
- Fiestable App is slow, unimpressive, and not worth using

Wonderfully Comfortable but Held Back by Cords
on March 27, 2019

As Turtle Beach regularly releases new gaming headsets, it can feel as though new models are only being made as a cash-grab.  But, after using many headsets over the years (within different console generations), I can honestly say that the company is truly improving the headset features.  The Elite Pro 2 has a strong build quality, excellent sounding audio (with appropriately powerful bass), impressive comfort that holds up through 4+ hours of gaming (even while wearing glasses), and convenient customization options – both to the look of the headset and to the audio.
While this set is very good, it bothers me that the Elite Pro 2 is not wireless.  For those who currently use Bluetooth Headphones, or wireless earbuds; moving back to a headset with a cable is quite annoying.  The mute switch on the cable can be difficult to locate during gameplay, and the SuperAmp needs to sit within reach as it contains the only volume control (except for the app).  If you’re a PC gamer the SuperAmp will probably be within reach, but for Playstation gamers, it probably will not be within reach if you are playing on the couch, or armchair.
…What is odd here is that the SuperAmp appears to act less as an actual amplifier and more as a way to add Bluetooth functionality.  But, Bluetooth is meant to be wireless!  In this circumstance, the headset must be physically attached to the SuperAmp (in order to receive a Bluetooth signal (from your phone, etc)) – And, the SuperAmp must also be physically connected to a power source to function (and to pass along game audio).  Perhaps creating the SuperAmp was just a cheaper way to incorporate Bluetooth without having to cram batteries into the headset itself.  In the Elite Pro 2 package, I am more impressed with the headset than I am with the SuperAmp.
As you are certainly aware, the Elite Pro 2 is expensive.  If you want to save good money, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas ($99.99) is the same headset, but without the SuperAmp.  You lose Bluetooth functionality, but you have the same 50mm Nanoclear Speakers, the same headband, nearly identical removable ear-cups with the ProSpecs Glasses Relief System (but without the cooling gel), same magnetic customizable speaker plates, etc.  It is compatible with Playstation, Switch, Xbox, & PC.
The Elite Pro 2 is perfect for those who have money to spend and who don’t mind the cord.  The comfort truly is great.
Read through the Pros & Cons to see if this is the right model for your needs:
Pros:
+ High quality sound with appropriately rich bass that doesn’t drown out important game/chat audio
+ Strong build quality
+ Great comfort for long gaming sessions (4+ hours)
+ Cooling gel earcups (noticeably reduces heat and improves comfort)
+ Earcups are easily removable (held in place my magnets) and replaceable
+ Earcups have channels with adjustable depth to ensure comfort for those who wear glasses (Prospecs Glasses Relief System)
+ Earcups are comfortable & nearly the perfect size
+ Earcups pivot in a controlled way (which lends to an overall feeling of quality)
+ Earcups have removable cover-plates that are easy to replace and customize
+ Headband is padded for comfort and built with metal for quality
+ Microphone is removable
+ Microphone has a built in foam screen that reduces pops, crackles, & breathing noises
+ Can be used to accept calls from your cellphone
+ Does not need batteries (or charging) to be used as headphones (when plugged into phone, stereo, etc)
+ SuperAmp includes Bluetooth functionality that allows you to listen to audio from your phone (and receive calls via Bluetooth)
+ SuperAmp has a quality build and good weight
+ SuperAmp has rubber feet that help to keep it from sliding around
+ SuperAmp has a 3.5mm output for streaming (game & chat) audio
+ SuperAmp LED indicates if audio is muted, or live
+ SuperAmp LED color is customizable – both brightness & color
+ Cord has a mute switch
+ Includes customizable Mic Monitoring (this allows you to hear your own voice mixed in with chat & game audio)
+ App allows audio & game chat customization (you are not limited to Presets)
+ Comes with all needed cables (including an optical cable)
+ 2 year warranty
Cons:
- High price
- NOT wireless
- Bluetooth functionality requires a physical (corded) connection to the SuperAmp - meaning that you cannot listen to Bluetooth audio on the go.
- The SuperAmp does not appear to truly amplify the audio (volume).  It appears to be simply a Bluetooth receiver allowing customization from the app and volume controls.
- The earcups do not block out much ambient noise.
- Does not feature any noise cancellation function
- No way to adjust volume on the cable or headset
- No way to adjust headband tension (which was available in the previous Elite Pro)
- SuperAmp must be physically close to you if you want to be able to control volume
- Locating the mute switch on the cable can be difficult/awkward mid gameplay
- Mic is rather stiff and may not bend / re-form in the exact way each user prefers
- Mic does not retract or fold out of the way (it has be completely unplugged/removed if you want it out of the way)
- Proper set-up is more involved that simply plug-in & play.  System setup is needed (which many users may miss)
- Super Human Hearing alters audio in a way that is distracting.  Reduces low end and bass leaving audio tinny.

Android Pie for the Cash Conscious
on March 25, 2019

The price of smartphones these days has seemed to outpace innovation.  My Samsung Galaxy Note 8 cost over $1,000 and nearly two years later (before I had paid it off) I began receiving texts & emails offering me the latest version of the phone.  The frustration is that Samsung wants me to drop another $1,000 for a phone that is nearly identical to the one I already had.  There just aren’t enough new features to justify continuing to spend so much money on the newest flagship smartphones.  And so, I have begun to explore more affordable smartphone options.
The Sony Xperia 10 Plus is truly an impressive smartphone that is unlocked and actually affordable (costing less than half of Apple, or Samsung’s flagship phones).  While the form factor blends in with nearly all smartphones these days, it boasts a noticeably larger screen that is actually useful (and does not have any annoying camera notch).  The resolution is 1080p which is more than suitable for its size (and probably saves money when compared to 4K screens that are not truly useful in a handheld size).  The screen is actually larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (by 0.10”) allowing convenient multi-tasking most of the time.  Though the tall screen and the multi-tasking are the most bragged about feature, not all apps can be split and the feature is not always intuitive on the fly.  But, watching HD video with a 21:9 ratio is surprisingly immersive.
The phone is incredibly easy to set up (from either Android or iOS) and is both quick and responsive.  My favorite feature is the fingerprint sensor which is located perfectly within reach on the right edge of the phone.  It is in a natural location and it works lighting quick to unlock the phone.  The power & volume buttons are located on the right side and are almost overly streamlined with the edge of the phone – making them difficult to find by feeling alone.  Having all of the physical buttons on the right side might also be a slight annoyance to those who are left handed.  And while it can be difficult to reach across the large screen, but luckily there is a shortcut menu that pops out from the side of the screen giving easy access to settings and commonly used apps.
Overall, I am truly impressed with this phone.  It is an incredible balance of impressive features and low price.  As it comes with the most recent version of Android (9 pie), it truly does not feel as though you are sacrificing much to get the lower price.  Sony has done an excellent job producing an affordable phone that is feature rich and that can last for years.  It is well worth the price.
PROS:
+ Phone is sold unlocked
+ Fingerprint sensor is easy to reach and works instantly
+ Has a 3.5 mm headphone jack (but also has Bluetooth option)
+ The back of the phone is NOT glass (reduces weight and is less that may break)
+ Ultra Widescreen:  21:9 aspect ratio
+ Record HD video in 21:9
+ Shortcut menu pops out from either side of the screen making commonly used apps easy to reach
+ Record audio in stereo
+ FM Radio
+ Pedometer built in
+ 64 gigs of memory built in
+ Has the ability to have memory added with a MicroSD card
+ 12 MP rear camera with 8 MP front selfie camera
+ Light weight for size: 6.35 ounces
+ NFC options built in
+ USB C data/charging connection
+ Great price for an unlocked smartphone
CONS:
- Tall size can take some time to get used to and can definitely feel oversized when in your pocket
- While screen is 1080p it seems to display a warmer image (less color accurate) than higher end phones
- Using split screen (or entering this mode) does not work with all apps and is not very intuitive.
- You have to double tap to open the shortcut menu (instead of swiping out from the edge which would be more intuitive)
- Does not have many case or accessory options available online
- Does NOT have wireless charging
- Two speakers appear to only play in mono
- Bokeh photo effect (portrait with slightly blurred background) is not particularly easy to use

True Quality & Classic Styling Made Contemporary
on March 12, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Marshall has been making amplifiers and speakers for more than 50 years and their expertise truly shines in the Bluetooth speakers they have begun making in recent years. The company has done an exceptional job at combining their classic styling with current technology to produce Bluetooth & Wi-Fi speakers that truly stand out for all of the right reasons. The Stanmore (in particular) sounds absolutely incredible. Not only is it beautiful, but it easily fills small, medium, or large spaces with crisp, clear audio that gets thunderously LOUD (without becoming distorted). It is finally a Bluetooth speaker that has legitimate bass! The Stanmore is absolutely worth the investment as it is a quality speaker that will absolutely delight your ears for many years.

The frustration, for me, is that Marshall has begun releasing too many different speaker versions all at different price points. At such a premium price, most customers just want a quality speaker that can work whenever they need music. Sadly, that’s not the case here.
…Do you want a Bluetooth speaker? Or, do you want a Wi-Fi speaker that can sync with other speakers throughout your house? Perhaps you want a voice assistant such as Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant? But wait! If you choose a Wi-Fi speaker then you can’t have either voice assistant (built-in). Why so complicated! At over $350.00 it would be nice to have one speaker that has all of the features needed so that it works all the time.

Also worth noting is that Marshal has not truly made many changes when they upgraded to the Stanmore version II. The most noticeable difference is in the controls. Instead of the metal mechanical switch of the original Stanmore, the updated version has a metal lever that feels soft and gummy. No more flipping the switch up for on and down for off, you simply squish the lever downward until the unit powers up – which has no tactile feedback. The dials now have rubber grips and they rotate indefinitely. The original had traditional speaker knobs that you could turn up from 1 through 10. Now there is no way to know what the volume is until the unit is powered on. Instead of having an arrow on the knob, the new Stanmore has multiple red LEDs that illuminate as you rotate the knob. It works, but it feels very digital – which is not what is expected from a classic style Marshall Speaker.
What I do appreciate is that the volume on the speaker perfectly matches the audio level on your phone. No longer do you have to crank up the volume on your phone and then also adjust the volume on the speaker. If you raise your phone volume, the Stanmore adjusts with it (and vis versa).

While I appreciate that Marshall is trying to take their classic design and move it into the future, adding digital functionality cheapens the experience. As virtually none of the audio specs have changed with the Stanmore II, I suggest looking into the original Stanmore which is a savings of around $100.00. If you do want greater app functionality, or voice assistant features – then you will want the updated version.

Here are the current costs of each version of the speaker:
The original Stanmore currently costs $249.99.
Stanmore II - Bluetooth version = $349.99
Stanmore II - with Amazon Alexa = $399.99
Stanmore II - with Google Assistant = $399.99
Stanmore II - with Wi-Fi = $449.99

Marshall’s speakers are absolutely worth purchasing as their build quality and audio quality far surpasses the majority of Bluetooth speakers on the market – but, it may take some research to determine which option will truly suit you best.
PROS:
+ Excellent Audio Quality
+ Legitimately Strong Bass
+ Beautiful Design
+ Superb Build Quality
+ Equalizer options available within the app
+ Easy to connect via Bluetooth
+ Bluetooth 5.0 allows a true indoor range of over 30 feet – even through walls
+ Easily connects to two audio sources
+ Can be pulled out of hibernate/sleep mode via phone
CONS:
- High Price
- No longer comes with matching 3.5 mm audio cable
- Does not have any optical input
- Wi-Fi, Amazon Alexa, & Google Assistant features cost extra
- No option to answer phone calls with the speaker
- Knobs and dials are controlled digitally/electronically which deviates from the classic feel. These functions lead me to believe that the functions could theoretically malfunction (unlike a manual dial).

Do Not Hessitate, This TV is an Excellent Value!
on March 5, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
For years I have seen budget brand TVs in stores like Wal*Mart & Target, but I have always passed them by assuming they were simply poor quality generics.  After all, how can a cheap TV possibly compare to an established brand like Sony, Samsung, LG, etc?
To be perfectly honest, I never would have purchased a Hisense product.  I had been saving up for a 65 inch 4K TV for my man-cave when Best Buy offered to send me the Hisense H9+ for review.  I must say, I am absolutely thrilled with this TV!  It is extremely thin, has virtually no bezel, the picture quality is fantastic, it actually runs at 120 Hz, and the smart features / apps work brilliantly!  For the first time, I don’t feel as though I need to use a Roku to access apps.  I honestly feel as though I would have been foolish to spend double the money just to get a brand I am more familiar with.  I absolutely recommend this TV with no hesitation.
To read scientific break down of all features and functions, read the detailed spec review from Rtings.com:
https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/hisense/h9e-plus
There are only two minor downsides worth mentioning:
- The Remote:  It is very simple and does not have a button that allows the user to switch the input.  I have to go to the home screen, then scroll over to the input option, then select the input I want to view.  There is a voice function, but even that doesn’t allow me to switch input.  Using my voice to find out how old Arnold Schwarzenegger is takes only 4 seconds, but switching inputs takes twice as long.
Also, the shortcut buttons cannot be remapped (although this is the case with most default remotes (such as with the Roku).
- The legs extend all the way out to the very edge of the TV.  This means that you have to have a surface that is 46 inches wide to set the TV on.  It would have been helpful if the legs were brought in more towards the center so that people would have the option of setting the TV on a narrower surface.  The TV could still be perfectly stable and though the screen would extend past each end of the table/dresser/etc, it would still allow more options for where the TV could be placed (without mounting on a wall).
Again, I completely recommend this 4K TV.  It is an excellent value and is absolutely worth buying.  Save yourself a good chunk of change.  You will not be disappointed in the least.

FOR INDOOR USE - RANGE IS UNDER 1 MILE
on January 25, 2019
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
***IMPORTANT***  These walkie talkies do NOT have a range of 23 miles.  Based on my outdoor testing, the range cuts out completely at under 1 mile (in a lightly populated rural neighborhood).
...While this may be a deal breaker for customers looking for super long range communication, it appears as though the manufacturer is NOT claiming that the range is nearly as far as Best Buy advertises in the item description.  The packaging only claims that the range is 250,000 square feet spread across 20 floors.
I tested the range inside of a HUGE 4 story office building and was surprised (and pleased) to find that the handsets worked perfectly without interference.  With one handset on the first floor and the other handset on the far corner of the 4th floor - the audio was still clear - even with the interference of elevators, conference rooms, thousands of cubicles, cafeteria, kitchens, stairwells, employees etc.
I believe the intent of these walkie talkies is for employees on a job site (like the employees of a Best Buy, or Old Navy).  They would probably work quite well on a construction site as well - although the volume is never particularly loud.  If the surrounding environment is especially noisy - you may have a difficult time hearing the speaker on these hand units.
I would not recommend these walkie talkies for those who want long range communication.
I would recommend these walkie talkies for use on a job site.
PRO:
+ Easy to use
+ Plenty of channel options
+ Back Lit Screen
+ Hands Free Option
+ Audible Chirp after button release
+ Can swivel 360 degrees while in Belt Clip
+ Charging Stand is Included
+ Walkie Talkies can be charged while still in belt clip holsters
+ Base of Charging Stand is covered in rubber that grips well which keeps the stand stationary
+ Rechargeable batteries are included
+ Batteries are replaceable
+ Batteries last a full day (12 hours)
CONS:
- High price
- Less than 1 mile range
- Belt clips are rigid and can break if dropped
- Headsets are not included and the manual does not mention what headsets are compatible

From Work to Workout.™ Comfortable, sweat-proof earbuds that work from the office to the gym. Set features secure-fit earbuds and powerful audio that gets you moving. The Set in-ear sport headphones let you manage calls and audio with the in-line remote and microphone and come with the enhanced bass that Skullcandy products are known for.

Are you able to use these to receive FM radio signals on your cell phone (in my case Samsung Note20 Ultra) without using data as previous cell phones could use stereo jacked wired headphones (as the antenna)?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does not have a built in radio tuner. This means that you will need to use a data connection in order to listen to the radio.
