Modern Nostalgia: Fun, but expensive.
on September 19, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Though the actual Polaroid brand has been defunct for many years; the name has been sold (and resold) - eventually becoming “Polaroid Originals” (as of 2017).  And, with the new name comes a new version of the classic OneStep camera from 1977.
The OneStep+ is a nearly identical refresh to the OneStep SX-70 model, but the nostalgia may not be widely appreciated at such a high price.  The + is incredibly fun to use (especially for those who grew up using the originals), but the enjoyment is quickly snubbed out when you realize just how expensive it is.
The camera is more expensive than anyone would guess, and the Film (which is not included) costs around $16.  If that doesn't sound like a lot, keep in mind that you only get 8 photos - which means that you are literally paying $2.00 for each picture!  And don’t forget that with Polaroid, each photo is a gamble.  Waiting up to 15 minutes to see your image might be exciting at first, but soon comes the realization that most results are mediocre (at best) and there is a reason that the simplicity (and high quality) of Digital has taken over the photo landscape.
Not having to develop film is no longer novel as it once was.  In the past, this feature may have saved time and offset the high cost of the camera & special film.  But, now that we all have the ability to take high definition digital photos, nobody is driving to an awkwardly placed photo-hut to pay for film developing.  We actually can see our pictures instantly. We can retake them and even edit them to our liking.
This camera is not all bad – in fact, it is simple and enjoyable to use (if you don’t mind spending money up front, and continuing to spend money every time you take a picture).  Synching the OneStep+ to your phone is a welcome innovation and is incredibly quick and easy.  This helps users learn to use the camera and adds features that otherwise could not have been included (without adding buttons or a screen that would have further increased the cost).  Using the phone as a shutter remote is convenient.  It is also quite satisfying to see your picture automatically pop out of the camera after the phone hears your subjects say “CHEEEEEESE!”  The best feature, by far, is the double exposure which allows you to layer two pictures on-top of one another for a truly artistic result.
The only disappointment is that the phone is not able to display what the camera sees.  This leads to many awkward moments of looking through your viewfinder while also awkwardly fumbling with your phone.  I wish that Polaroid would have found a way to further utilize the capabilities of our smartphones.  Oddly, most photo-shoots conclude with the user taking a cell phone picture of their Polaroid picture.  Now else are we to share our blurry hipster vignettes?
It is always hard to convince people to pay something that they can get for free – and this is the challenge that Polaroid now faces.  I truly do want this camera to be a success. But Sadly, I believe that the skill of taking a great Polaroid picture will continue to be a lost art.
The original Polaroid company went bankrupt in 2001. The "new" Polaroid company went bankrupt in 2008.  Let's hope “Polaroid Originals” can finally find a way carry nostalgia into the future.
PROS:
+ Comes with a rechargeable battery built in
+ Pairing with a phone is extremely easy
+ View finder is covered with rubber making it more comfortable to hold up to your eye
+ Has a solid build quality
+ Has physical buttons & switches for a more retro feel
+ Lens adjusts for portraits (close up) or standard (distance) photos
+ Has multiple picture options: The most fun being double exposure
+ Allows for Manual adjustment of aperture, flash intensity, shutter speed, etc - which allows a higher level of personalization.
+ Can be mounted on a standard tripod
+ Shutter can be triggered by noise (when the group says "CHEESE!" the Camera snaps the picture)
+ Bright & useful flash
+ LED lights show how many pictures are remaining in the camera
+ Comes with neck strap & charging cable
CONS:
- Camera’s price is high
- The Camera does NOT come with any film
- Film is expensive
- Only holds 8 pictures
- Size is bulky and not particularly portable
- Lens is exposed and does not come with a lens cap
- Viewfinder is small and a bit awkward to use (as often you are trying to manipulate your phone while also looking through the camera)
- Cell Phone cannot be used as a viewfinder (it does not display the image of that the camera sees)
- The paired phone cannot be used to view the picture taken
- Picture quality is not any better than Polaroid cameras from decades ago
- Film takes a long time to develop (between 5 & 15 minutes) (which also seems as though it should have improved over the years)
- Comes with a USB charging cable, but not with the adapter to plug it into a wall

No Frills. Simple & Easy To Use.
on September 8, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
I genuinely appreciate that this LG 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray player has no frills and no gimmicks. It focuses only only playing whatever disc is inserted. There is no WiFi and there are no Smart apps cluttering the menu. Insert a CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray and it loads and plays quickly. You can also play content from a USB drive (if you so choose).
My only minor complaint is that the player is about 17 inches wide - which is too wide for a lot of media cabinets. For me, this means that the player must sit on top of the cabinet. It is slim enough to fit under my HDTV, but then it gets in the way of my soundbar. Make sure you measure your cabinet/shelf before you purchase so that you can plan on where it will sit.
NOTE: If you want access to Dolby Vision, WiFi, or apps (such as Netflix) you have the option of spending about $50 more to purchase the LG UBK90. But honestly, so many devices already provide access to Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc that most users will probably appreciate the simplicity and lower price of this UBK80.
PROS:
+ Very Simple Menu / User interface: Plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc quickly & easily.
+ Loads discs quickly (which is something that is often an issue with Blu-Ray players).
+ Ability to download updates through the wired internet connection (you do not need to plug in a USB drive)
+ Backwards compatible: Can play Audio CDs, CD/DVD ROMs, DVD, Blu-Ray discs etc.
+ Comes with a full function remote that is able to power on your TV's and adjust the input & volume level.
+ Does support 3D content - Although 3D HDTVs are no longer produced.
+ Able to play content from a USB drive.
CONS:
- No WiFi connection
- No smart features / apps
- 17 inches wide (which does not fit in many media cabinet shelves)
- No streaming option for Music. You can only play files from a disk or a USB drive.
- Difficult to control without the remote (as the face of the player only has Eject, Play/Pause, Stop, & Power buttons.
- Does not support Dolby Vision
- Has only 1 HDMI output
- Does not come with the required HDMI cable (or with audio or Ethernet cables).

Comfortable, Great For Gaming, But Lacking Bass
on August 19, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Though the odd styling of this headset makes you look like an air traffic controller, it is very lightweight, quite comfortable (even for those with glasses), and though it lacks bass - the headset does an excellent job of simulating surround sound. ...You truly can hear the location of different sound effects within a game (especially helpful in shooters such as Halo, COD, PUBG, Fortnite, etc) For a headset that is more universally affordable than the many high end headsets from companies like Turtle Beach, this set holds its own and is definitely worth buying for budget conscious Gamers.
Note: If you are a young kid, this headset will actually fit you well. Not only does the headband automatically adjust, but the earcups can snap into 3 separate locations to help ensure the best fit for those of any age.
PROS:
+ Does a great job of simulating surround sound and is truly helpful for shooters (you can actually hear the specific location of certain sounds).
+ Comes with access to a Dolby Atmos app that does not appear to be available to other Xbox Live members.
+ Very Lightweight
+ Headband is easily adjustable - will fit heads of any size. (Will fit kids or adults.)
+ Comfortable to wear with glasses
+ Breathable Earcups
+ Volume Knob is easy to reach during game play & works well
+ Boom Microphone mutes when flipped upwards
+ Comes with an attachment to help mold the volume knob to either an Xbox controller, or a Playstation Controller
+ The headset does a great job of allowing Mic Monitoring (allowing you to hear your own voice while chatting) when adjustments are made to the Xbox audio settings.
+ The microphone & audio cables are removable
Cons:
- Lacks bass (especially noticeable when listening to music)
- It is unclear what the included Dolby Atmos app actually does as it vanishes as soon as it downloads. You just have to have faith that it truly provides support for Dolby Atmos.
- Poor style (they stick out quite far from the head)
- Built entirely from plastic. This keeps the weight down, but also means they are more likely to break.
- Customization options are not widely available and feel like more of a gimmick
- Volume needs to be turned up all the way (unless you increase game volume in the xbox settings - which leaves a white noise when there is no game audio playing).
- Ear cups are rather small. If you have large ears, gauged ears, or wear earrings, you may find them uncomfortable near the bottom of your ears.
- Microphone has to be bent close to your mouth so players can year you well - which is fine, except that when you fold the mic up to mute - the mic then hits you in the face. You can bend it out of the way, but then you have to re-adjust every time you bring the mic back down for use.
Important: If you do not hear any game audio when you plug in the 3.5 mm cable, you may need to remove the rubber adapter that molds to the controller's shape. If this rubber piece isn't in the perfect position - it won’t allow the plug to snap all the way in. Either push the jack further into the hole, or take off the rubber piece.

Over-sized for Great Reception
on July 18, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
I believe that this ANTOP AT-400 antenna does deliver on all of its reception claims (up to 65 miles), but it is so surprisingly oversized that it is hard to imagine too many customers deciding to use it in-doors. The good news is that the antenna does NOT need to be plugged into any power source.
Also helpful is the fact that the included coaxial cable is 40 feet and disconnects from the antenna - making it easier to adjust or feed the cable through the wall or attic before attaching the main unit. Or, you can replace the cable without having to purchase a new antenna.
***IMPORTANT*** Before purchasing this (or any) antenna, make sure to use one of the following websites to search for channels that are broadcast near your address. These sites will indicate how many channels you should receive and what range of antenna you may want to select:
https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps
https://www.antennaweb.org/
This antenna works well indoors as long as it has an unobstructed path to a window. The product description states that the antenna blocks 3G & 4G signals to ensure uninterrupted digital signals, but don’t worry – I have not noticed this feature interrupting or interfering with the T-Mobile or Verizon 4G signal strength on my cell phones.
Ultimately, this is a great antenna if you are okay with its gargantuan size. See my pictures to see how large it is next to a 32 inch TV and a 65 inch TV.

An Unsightly Beast that Generally Works Well
on July 5, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
Using the XXL Air Fryer is like owning a microwave in the early 80’s. It’s bulky, has no display screen, uses manual dials, and nobody knows how long it takes to actually cook anything. Fortunately, Philips has created an App that allows you to look up recipes from your phone – which helps, but often leaves you hangry - frantically searching the dark web for something as simple as the cooking time for tater tots. Locating the perfect recipe wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that the machine shuts off completely when the timer hits 0. Yup. This modern marvel has no power switch. It is controlled entirely by an Egg Timer just like the one your grandmother had in her kitchen. Once that timer clicks down, the machine turns off completely. If your food needs just 2 more minutes to reach a magical golden brown - Too bad! You have to twist the knob past 4 minutes before the oven will turn back on – and by that time this chubby easy bake oven has cooled down and will need some additional time to heat back up. The good news is that you probably won’t burn your food – the sweltering desert air swirling briskly inside will likely turn your dinner to dried out jerky pucks long before anything is scorched.

If you currently own an oil fryer and are replacing it with the XXL Air Fryer, you will probably feel at least mildly disappointed. Hot air simply doesn’t cook in the same way as hot oil. This is essentially a small convection oven – a coil located above the basket heats up and a fan swirls the hot air around inside. Ultimately, you will not quite have the deep-fried options that you’re used to (you won’t end up with the same hand battered chicken strips, or homemade doughnuts that you’re used to).
If you are choosing this Air Fryer instead of purchasing your first oil deep fryer, you will likely be quite pleased. The results are healthier than deep fried food, the basket can hold enough food for 2 – 3 people, and the machine is incredibly easy to use (even if quality recipes are not always easy to find). It is a great option for those with kids wanting to help cook – especially as it cannot be accidentally left on (as the power is only on for the length selected on the timer).
Overall; the machine is well made, but it is a bit of an unsightly beast that consumes more counter space than any other kitchen appliance you may own. If you are not seeking out a small oven specifically to help you eat healthier, then I would pass on this (and all) Air Fryers. Philips has made a decent machine. ...I just don't believe that the Air Fryer trend will ever pick up much steam.
PROS:
+ Cooks food in a much healthier way when compared to a conventional oil fryer.
+ Cooking time is much faster than a conventional oven
+ Safer to use than an deep fryer that can cause burns
+ Easier to clean than an oil fryer
+ The machine has a compartment in the back that holds the cord when not in use.
+ Large enough to cook food for around 3 people
+ Cooks evenly and consistently
CONS:
- There is no on/off switch. You must wait for the timer to count down, or you must force it to 0 (potentially breaking the timer – which would mean you cannot power the machine on at all).
- The chime for the timer is incredibly quiet. Instead, you will be alerted that the time has ended as the fan stops blowing and the machine shuts off.
- Cooking time is generally much slower than frying in oil.
- Often dries out food if you don’t have the perfect cooking time.
- It is often difficult to locate the appropriate cooking time as many foods are missing from the Recipe App and manufacturers don’t put Air Fryer cooking time in their instructions.
- Food Cooks best in a single layer (as the hot air doesn’t flow around all sides as grease would in a fryer). This means that when cooking items such as Fries, you must frequently open the drawer and shake the basket to obtain even crisping.
- The fan makes a fair amount of noise (and is certainly louder than a fryer or a conventional oven).
- The machine is pretty large when compared to the size of the basket inside. Will add to kitchen clutter.
- It seems as though no thought was put into the design / appearance. The machine is just a giant black box that most will want to hide away (if only there was enough space to store this beast).
- A great number of the recipes within the app require accessories that are sold separately.

Beautify built for the aficionado, but not perfect
on June 26, 2018
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
The Nespresso Lattissima One is a beautiful machine that saves counter space and works quickly, but it is rather messy and is designed more for aficionados than the average coffee lover. The included sampler offers a confusing mix of 14 capsules that are difficult to distinguish from one another. Capsules are color coded & their foil lids list fancy names, but despite the flavor chart they all tend to taste the same – even when drinking cups back to back. While generic capsules are offered online, it is rare to find capsules in the store. Luckily the website offers a program that will ship the capsules to your door at selected intervals – including a free UPS shipping envelope for you to ship off empty capsules for recycling.
While the machine does make quick work of producing quality espresso, my main complaint is the mess. It’s nice that the milk is frothed right into the cup, but at the end of the process it spurts foam past the cup and all over the counter. The directions state that the frothing mechanism needs to be cleaned after every cup – a process that includes disassembling 5 pieces and either running them through the dishwasher or washing them by hand (which includes soaking each piece in soapy water for 30 minutes). Coffee also drips from the nozzle for several minutes after brewing is complete. The tray below is not removable and if you have the white machine it will probably show coffee stains rather quickly.
If elegant presentation of the Latissima One does win you over, I believe you will be satisfied with the drink produced. But, I believe it is a machine that still requires improvement before becoming universally impressive.
Pros:
+ The machine is small and looks beautiful
+ The capsules are tiny (& recyclable) which reduces waste compared to other single serve coffee containers.
+ The bottom has the machine has multiple paths to wrap the cord so that it does not clutter the kitchen counter.
+ The tank is easy to remove and holds enough water (4.5 cups / 36 ounces) for a few days of use.
+ You can adjust the amount of water that each button dispenses. This slightly impacts flavor, but it is a great option that I sincerely appreciate.
+ The machine ejects used capsules into a hidden container out of view. Unfortunately this does not happen automatically after brewing – meaning that “family members” still constantly leave the capsules in the machine.
+ Reusable capsules are available online (although they are not made or endorsed by Nespresso)
+ The water takes less than 30 seconds to heat.
+ You don’t have to wait for the water to heat. You can simply press the cup/brew button and the process will begin when the water is hot.
+ The machine includes a water hardness mode that adjusts how often the Descaling reminder appears. This reduces mineral build-up inside of the machine and keeps it running smoothly. NOTE: The included water test strip is definitely not on the first page of the user’s manual (as stated in the directions). It is tucked into a random page. Simply flip through the booklet to find the test strip.

Cons:
- The Machine is rather loud. This is probably because the machine has to pump steam through the capsules with high pressure, but it is still louder than I expected. (It sounds like a water pick.)
- Nespresso capsules aren’t as widely available as K-Cups.
- My opinion is that the Nespresso capsules tend to cost slightly more than K-Cup options.
- I find that the nozzle drips after I have removed my cup – requiring additional clean-up.
- Capsules are recyclable, but you must return them using a prepaid UPS shipping bag. The bag is free when you purchase more capsules online, but it’s not particularly convenient & I doubt most people will save the cups until they receive the recycling bag.
- The milk steamer must be disassembled and cleaned every time it is used. It would have been nice if they figured out a way to feed the hot water through the milk nozzle to help keep the parts clean.
- The bottom tray is not removable (which makes cleaning less convenient) and it not large enough to hold a standard coffee mug.
- The used capsule tray has a second compartment underneath that is designed to hold the coffee that drips out of used capsules. It is easy to forget about this tray which collects stale coffee and becomes messy / smelly if you forget to clean it.

Not Yet The King, But Certainly A Starboy
on November 30, 2016

In an age where digital singles often reign supreme, The Weeknd has still managed to deliver a classic album in which each record holds its own, but is also an intricate chapter of a larger story perhaps best enjoyed in sequence. Lyrically, he is still searching for meaning, but the package arrives with a creative polish that skillfully aims towards more than the target he hit so precisely with his Trilogy.
With his previous album (and the dozens of accompanying performances), The Weeknd proved that there is indeed beauty behind his madness and impressively - he is still brave enough to give much of his music away for free and is still good enough to be paid anyways. Quite shy in years past, Tesfaye finally opens up just long enough to briefly drop the falsetto and share more of his vocal range range - to impressive results. The eerie electronic pop-funk fits well with the 80's sci-fi aesthetic and is both highly emotional and surprisingly fun.
Previous comparison to Michael Jackson has been a stretch, but with the soulful pep of "I Feel It Comin', The Weeknd has truly earned it.
Abel continues to dominate vocally making cameos mostly unnecessary and though his sound has grown much more radio friendly, he will need to outgrow his gritty, drug obsessed explicit lyrics if he truly wants to take over the world.
If the album doesn't capture your imagination, several singles surely will. The Weeknd may have a way to go if he wants to be the new King of Pop, but he certainly is a Starboy.

The Weeknd Truly Wants It All...
on August 28, 2015
Posted by: TheDuke
from Seattle, WA
In his effort to find the Beauty Behind the Madness, The Weeknd appears to be following in the footsteps of Taylor Swift by moving past his native genre in exchange for Pop. (Perhaps because its crown has remained unclaimed after the passing of its king in 2009). It is difficult to discern if the style shift is genuine growth, true genius, or just good fortune – But luck rarely lasts this long. Perhaps Able is finally utilizing his resources & test driving the Record Label formula for success – a help he seems to have turned down when creating Kissland. The change will undoubtedly draw hoards of new fans, but many who were around from his humble & mysterious beginning are sure to be critical of his assimilation to a more mainstream sound.
Admittedly, he wants it all and is following the money, but If he is selling out; it appears he has been afforded the unique opportunity to do so on his own terms - mostly maintaining lyrical control as he continues to search for something meaningful to say. Luckily for R&B, The Weeknd has not yet found happiness and his angst, loneliness, & hurt still shines through in a gritty & profound way. While some roots remain, XO fans will have to settle for a Weeknd who has become a musical actor - successfully imitating a wide range of genres instead of over dosing on the perfection that he has been forced to outgrow.
The album features several proven hits such as “The Hills”, “Can’t Feel My Face”, & “Earned It”, but the remaining tracks are versatile & catchy (with a few unlikely guest appearances). “Shameless” sounds like a song written for Justin Bieber with some added expletives and XO flair - while “Angel” could have easily been an Orchestral Super Ballad written (& perhaps performed) by R. Kelly. Many of the songs (such as “Often”, “Prisoner”, & “In The Night”) leaked long ago, but they are some of his best and are still very much a worth while addition to the album as The Weekend’s greatest talent is making music worth buying even after it as been given away for free (ie the platinum selling Trilogy).
Beauty Behind the Madness may be less haunting than his previous mixtape albums, but it is an energetic, ferocious, & well rounded vision that is worth multiple spins in its entirety. If nothing else, fans will simply be thrilled that The Weeknd has finally given us more than 10 new songs while still leaving plenty to dig up on the internet in the months to come. The Weeknd may still be a prisoner to his addictions, but he is certainly capable of anything….

From Work to Workout.™ Comfortable, sweat-proof earbuds that work from the office to the gym. Set features secure-fit earbuds and powerful audio that gets you moving. The Set in-ear sport headphones let you manage calls and audio with the in-line remote and microphone and come with the enhanced bass that Skullcandy products are known for.

Are you able to use these to receive FM radio signals on your cell phone (in my case Samsung Note20 Ultra) without using data as previous cell phones could use stereo jacked wired headphones (as the antenna)?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does not have a built in radio tuner. This means that you will need to use a data connection in order to listen to the radio.
