Nice upgrade from Watch 3
on August 28, 2022
Posted by: cw77
Setup was extremely easy & only took about 15 minutes. And that included the setup wizard establishing LTE service on my existing mobile plan.
It uses a magnetic charging ‘puck’ which is very similar to the one that my previous Watch 3 used, and the Watch 5 will also charge when using the puck from my Watch 3, so that’s nice. However, as is the norm these days, there’s no charger included - just the puck & attached cord. And the new puck uses USB-C, so you’ll want to make sure you have an appropriate charger or adapter.
Battery life is okay, so far. I’ve been getting about a day and a half, including wearing it during sleep so I can take advantage of the sleep tracking, but I have been using it quite a bit more than I normally would. I suspect, under normal use, I could probably go two days before needing to recharge again.
Watch features are great; some of the best around imo. Manual and automatic tracking of several different exercise activities, sleep tracking (and coaching after it collects a weeks worth of data - not sure what that really does yet though), send/receive SMS, Google Maps, on-board storage for a moderate amount of music, and the list goes on. It also adds a body composition analysis function, and it’s supposed to have a skin temperature sensor, but in true Samsung fashion (referring to prior models promised blood pressure monitoring that STILL hasn’t arrived in the US) the skin temperature sensor isn’t available for use yet. And the switch from Tizen to WearOS has really opened up the selection of wearable apps.
Overall, a very nice upgrade from my Galaxy Watch 3

Solid monitor at a good price
on July 7, 2022
Posted by: cw77
The assembly is very simple, with clear instructions, and no tools needed.
It has two HDMI ports, which is a welcome change from my other monitors that have one HDMI and one VGA. I can finally lose the adapter I’ve been using to share my monitor with my laptop. The auto-switch between inputs works well also. It also comes with a decent quality HDMI cable.
The power supply is integrated, so there’s no brick taking up desk/floor space, and it uses a standard power cord.
The monitor stand is fine, with a simple (yet surprisingly effective) slot in the riser for cable management. The stand allows for a decent degree of tilt, but does not have adjustments for height or swivel, but that’s not really a big deal. It also has VESA mounts (and a decorative cover if you don’t use VESA) so you can mount it accordingly if you wish.
The display is very nice, with good color and no missing/broken pixels. The screen itself has a slightly matte finish, so glare hasn’t been a problem.
For the price, this monitor is really hard to beat.

Nice 1st year value for 20 devices - renewal $$
on June 28, 2022
Posted by: cw77
Firstly, know that this price is ONLY for the 1st year; renewals are over $100.
Installation is relatively quick & easy, just go to the website & download the installer after entering your key. After launching the installer, it only takes a couple of minutes.
Password Manager only imports from Lastpass, Dashlane, McAfee, and Norton. Didn’t see any option to specify any formatting that would allow you to import from another password manager's csv export. Showstopper for me, as I’m already using another manager, and there’s no way I’m manually adding a few hundred entries.
Android app:
The setup process even leads you right through the steps necessary to effectively implement Norton security on your Android phone.
Android app has Split Tunneling feature, which allows you to specify certain apps that can bypass VPN connectivity.
Couldn’t find any remote wipe/lock functionality.
Tried Norton Family Protect (parental controls) on a Chromebook, and I can’t recommend it. From a web browsing perspective, it’s okay IF you get your child to use the Norton browser. Supposedly you’re able to add an extension to Chrome, but I wasn’t able to get it to work, so your results may vary. That said, I didn’t have any trouble getting the Family Protection to work on a Windows laptop, including the Chrome extension, so it should be good to go if you’re using Windows.
The software can also be a tad pushy on getting you to pay for additional services, particularly AntiTrack. It’s initially a bit chatty with Windows notifications also, but seemed to have died down a little after a few days.
I haven’t noticed any performance issues on any devices running Norton360.
I didn’t find the user interface to be particularly intuitive either. And the entire left half of the UI is pretty much dedicated to a Norton background, with the simple addition of a Run Smart Scan button. It isn’t horrible, but some of the other security suites I’ve used are better, imo.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Beautiful laptop & solidly built

Large, smooth, area for wrists to rest.
Stickers on the wrist area are easily removable, which is a definite plus.
There’s a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button, which you can use to login to Windows and other applications that are biometric enabled.
USB-C power supply, so you can charge up with just about any fast charger, albeit a bit slower than with the 90W charger that’s included.
It has a built-in privacy shutter for the camera, although I do wish they made the shutter more noticeable (make red or some other contrasting color) as it’s difficult to quickly tell if the shutter is closed or not.
Dell Support Center software makes it easy to stay up to date with drivers/firmware.
The backlit keyboard has a nice feel to it, with good feedback.
Dislikes:
Speakers don’t have much frequency response and are a bit tinny sounding. The sound also changes when you have something (like your wrists) over the wrist-rest area, almost like there are speakers beneath even though there’s no visible indication of speakers there. Kinda weird. The volume range is decent though.
Have to press the ‘fn’ key to activate the page up/down key.
It’s a bit heavy for a 2-in-1, but it is a 16 inch device, so I can’t fault it too much for that.
Misc:
Home & End keys are overridden if you activate the fn lock, but the page up/down keys still require you to press the fn key, even when it’s locked.
It’s a decent laptop overall

Nice upgrade from the Nano S
on May 23, 2022
Posted by: cw77
Includes USB-A to USB-C cord, but it could be a tad longer. Not really a big deal, as you can use just about any USB-C cord.
The Ledger support site has an easily found article on how to migrate your crypto from a Nano S to the S Plus.
When entering your recovery phrase, you only have to enter a few letters before the Nano S Plus starts presenting possible words. Additionally, as you enter a letter, the list of subsequent letters decreases, eliminating letters that wouldn’t result in a valid word. Welcome relief, as I was figuring that I’d have to completely spell out all 24 words.
The S Plus has significantly more app space than the Nano S. I’m finally able to keep all of the crypto apps I use installed, rather than having to uninstall/install each whenever I have to make a transaction.
Overall, this is a definite upgrade from my Nano S. If you’re looking at the Nano S or Nano S Plus, I think the S Plus is absolutely worth the $20 difference. Between the increased storage space and the USB-C connection, you can’t go wrong.

Unusual design, but definitely worth trying!
on May 6, 2022
Posted by: cw77
from Papillion, NE
At first glance, it’s an unusual design, but it’s actually been very comfortable. It took a couple of hours to get used to the ‘non-traditional’ hand positioning, but I don’t know that I’ll ever go back now. It feels much more natural than a traditional mouse.
Pairing, via bluetooth anyway, was effortless. I didn’t bother trying the Logi Bolt USB receiver since the bluetooth pairing was so easy.
It has a feature that allows you to pair it with up to three devices. There’s a little button, on the underside of the mouse, that you press to cycle between the devices. Personally, I find the location of the button mildly inconvenient. Perhaps that’s because I’m coming from a Logitech MX Ergo, which has the button for that function conveniently on the top of the mouse, and easily facilitates single-handedly switching between devices. Another miss with this feature is that it cycles through all three devices, even if you’re only using two. So, to switch from device A to device B only requires a single button press, but switching from B back to A requires two button presses as you have to cycle through what would be device C. Still not a deal breaker though.
Installing the Options+ software (which is technically in Beta release, but you don’t need an invite) gives you the ability to change what the buttons do. You can change them globally, meaning no matter what app you’re in, you can set the front thumb button to ‘Copy’ (or several other functions), the rear thumb button to ‘Paste’, and the middle button to ‘Screen Snip’. You can also create app-specific settings, such as when working in Excel, have the rear thumb button ‘Paste Values’, or ‘Next Sheet’, etc… Pretty cool actually, as I use Screen Snip & Paste Values frequently.
It also uses a single ‘AA’ battery, as opposed to an internal rechargeable battery like my MX Ergo. Personally, I prefer the regular ‘AA’ battery, as I can almost always find another one lying around the house in the event the battery dies. With my MX Ergo, I have to plug it in to get it charged back up.
Overall, I’m impressed & would definitely recommend the Logitech Lift to others.

Nice foray into gaming laptop
on January 19, 2022
Posted by: cw77

Likes:
-Solid build, doesn’t feel like cheap plastic
-Nice backlit keyboard, with adjustable colors
-Generous palm rest
-Keyboard has a nice feel to it, with positive action
-Touchpad supports two-finger gestures for scrolling, back/forward, etc…
-Compatible with Windows 11, and is eligible for a free upgrade, which you can implement right away, if you want to.
-Powerhouse of a laptop
Don’t like:
-Power plug is almost in the middle of the left side - think it would be less awkward if it were
closer to the rear of the laptop
-You have to use the old-school power plug that comes with the laptop; you can’t charge via USB-C ports. I get that you’d probably need the extra juice if you’re working the laptop hard, but I also think it would be convenient if you could charge via USB-C ports in a pinch.
-Home and End keys require you to press fn first. Not really a problem for games, but it’s really annoying if you expect your laptop to pull double-duty & be used for something other than gaming.
-Lid is awkward/difficult to open unless you open it directly from the middle front, where there’s a small lip. If you try to open it from the sides, or even off-center on the front, there’s little to grasp to get the lid open.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
This is my first foray into a gaming laptop, and I’m more of a casual gamer anyway, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I’ve tried to run a few games on my ‘normal’ laptops before, but they only ran so-so, so I pretty much stuck to my desktop for games. After trying a few on this MSI Delta, I doubt I’ll go back to playing on my desktop again. This MSI easily ran Forza 5, and MS Flight Simulator, at their max settings. Neither game experienced any lag or video issues. And being able to run them at their highest settings bumped the game experience up to a whole different level. And, with the AMD Smartshift technology, there’s very little performance degradation when switching to battery.
Overall, it’s a pretty decent machine; might even replace my desktop.

Finally. A robot vacuum you can rely on to get the job done. The Roomba j7 robot vacuum packs 10x the power-lifting suction and comes with unique intelligence to avoid cords and pet waste. It even understands times when you’re home and seasons when more cleaning may be needed. Compared to the Roomba 600 series cleaning system.

Nice upgrade from 690
on November 4, 2021
Posted by: cw77
from Papillion, NE
Initial setup was easy. I already have the iRobot app, so it was simply a matter of opening the app. The app could already detect the J7, so all I had to do was start the setup & tell it which wifi network to use. Then it had a quick overview of some of the J7’s features.
Charging base has built-in storage for the power cord, which is a nice improvement over my older Roomba.
After you let it get through 3-5 cleaning cycles, it should have a ‘map’ of your home built. The app will notify you when the map has been built, and you can then go in and define the different rooms of your home. This feature is really cool, because you can then tell the Roomba to just clean certain rooms at certain times.
iRobot has also vastly improved the Roomba’s ability to avoid getting stuck. My old Roomba 690 would often have issues with cords and small throw rugs. So far, my J7 has handled them all, and I haven’t had a single notification that it had gotten itself stuck.
The J7 also uses a camera to aid in object detection, and can take snapshots of the objects that it detects. At the end of a cleaning cycle, it will have you review the objects that it was uncertain about. After you review & mark each object accordingly, you can have it go ‘tidy up’ those areas. To test this, I dropped a charging cord in the middle of the floor. In the pic, it’s kind of hard to tell exactly what the J7 detected, but it’s enough to tell you where to go looking for the object. It’s also worth noting that you have to opt IN to this feature, so iRobot is trying to respect your privacy to a certain extent.
My biggest complaint so far is that it frequently tells you that the bin is full; sometimes even right after you empty the bin. There are a couple of sensors that you should quickly wipe off every time you empty the bin. I guess those sensors get a little dust on them & it thinks the bin is full. To be fair, the instruction manual (which you have to download) does tell you to clean the sensors, but I’m a little surprised at how often it needs to be done. We didn’t get the model with the ‘Clean Base’, which automatically empties the J7’s bin, so I wonder if it would also have trouble with the sensors needing to be cleaned frequently.
As for performance, it does a decent job. It obviously doesn’t have the power to replace a full sized vacuum for deeper carpet cleaning, but the convenience of scheduling it to automatically clean every few days more than makes up for it. We have a mix of surfaces (laminate, tile & carpet) and it handles them all with ease, including transitioning from one surface to another.
Overall, we’re pretty happy with it. Definitely an improvement over the older 690 series.

HEV light cleans, but there's a catch...
on November 1, 2021
Posted by: cw77
from Papillion, NE
I picked this up, with the intention of using it above my kitchen sink, but didn’t research limitations of HEV light for cleaning. I had read that HEV takes longer, which isn’t really a big deal since Lifx makes it really easy to schedule the cleaning mode, but I didn’t notice the distance limitations. Apparently, HEV light isn’t a very efficient cleaner once you get more than a foot two away from a surface. Since my kitchen light is easily 4+ feet from any surface, this probably won’t work for what I had intended. I’d definitely keep that in mind before you buy - placement will be key.
Aside from that, it’s a great bulb. The Lifx app makes it easy to change colors and brightness. Creating schedules (turn on at dusk, off at dawn, etc…) is really simple. If you have other Lifx bulbs, you can easily incorporate this into any schedules you may already have. Light output is incredibly bright. I like that you can select from several different ‘temperatures’, as I prefer a cooler white in the morning/daytime, but then a warmer white during the evening when it’s time to wind down.
As for recommending the bulb, I'd really say it depends. If you can locate the bulb within a foot or two of the surface you want to clean, then sure; if not, then I don't see the benefit.

Decent multi-function coffee machine
on October 21, 2021
Posted by: cw77
from Papillion, NE
Easy to put together, but you will have to find a place to store whatever coffee receptacle (pod or carafe) that you aren’t currently using.
Includes permanent filters for both pod and carafe brewing. And, unlike some other permanent filters I’ve used, they both do a good job of filtering out the grinds.
Brew time for an 8oz mug was just over 2 minutes, with a coffee temperature of 160 degrees. Coffee had a good flavor, especially for a pod brewer. I think pod brewers sometimes make a weaker cup, which wasn’t the case here.
Carafe keeps coffee temp around 170, and will keep it warm for about an hour. It also has a pause-and-serve feature, so you can sneak a cup while it’s still brewing.
Couple of possible detractors to keep in mind:
I think the selector dial feels cheap, especially for a $100+ coffee maker. It’s not horrible, but I just feel like it could be a little better quality, given the price.
Includes a riser to put your coffee mug closer to the pod, which is supposed to cut down on coffee splatters, but I’m not sure how much it actually helps. There are still several splatters around the machine.
It is a little tall, so it might not be well suited for placing directly under some cabinets. It fits under ours, but you can’t open the coffee receptacle very well, so we had to pull it part way from under the counter.
It’s also not smart enough to know you don’t have enough water in the reservoir to brew a full cup. On one occasion, it brewed 1-2 ounces before signaling that it needed more water. My prior machine wouldn’t let you start a cycle if you didn’t have enough water.
Overall, it’s a decent machine, and worth considering if you’re looking for a coffee maker that can handle pods, as well as brew a full 12 cup carafe.

If using an actual K cup instead of the reusable, will it fit a K Cup from Keurig? or is it a special size where you have to use an exact brand?

Standard k-cups (Keurig & non-Keurig brands) work just fine. However, it will NOT accept the carafe sized k-cups.

Does anyone who owns this model find that it is sort of loud?? The part that is the loudest is not the vacuum part but the part that makes it move I guess. Just wondering if anyone else found it loud or is there something wrong with mine?

I'd agree that it's fairly loud. Definitely louder than a competitors robot vac that I have.
