Arlo keeps raising the bar
on October 4, 2023
Posted by: DarR
I have a certain love for Arlo, so you can already say, this review is biased. But there is a reason why-- they just make just good products. Like this alarm system: Arlo cameras and doorbells have been around for a while but a robust alarm monitoring system—no. Arlo comes in a little late to the game but they arrive with something better than most if not the best.
First of all, it integrates easily with the existing Arlo system. This alarm system did not require the camera system, so it can operate independently. But it is also good to know that I easily added into the Arlo Secure app. Of course, given some updates, but nevertheless, it was easy. The app guided me through the installation but for any regular Joe, this can be done because the set up was pretty straightforward—no need for any hired professionals. The keypad is simple and can be taken out of the provided plug to be also powered through USB. Having a backup battery for the keypad is not included in this package but the USB workaround works for me. Because if we are leaving for a vacation for example, I can easily power it using a back up battery pack so there is no fear of it losing power. (My internet modem and router which is required by this Arlo device to monitor the house, is also backed by battery). One thing that I loved about the set up was, the app will actually make you go through the process of understanding the keys. So there is no excuse to just plug and play it without understanding how it works. Pretty good engineering in the part of Arlo, if you were to ask me.
Now, given the app, I have a much better dashboard that actually shows the log of everything that I asked the sensors to monitor, like temperature changes, occurred motion, light level changes (yes ambient light dude), and the main thing which was the opening and closing of the doors. The biggest plus for me is, this system is Google Home compatible. So the keypad and the sensors can be linked to rooms and actually be monitored using Google voice notifications. Though the keypad sounds (door opening /closing) is very audible, having google notifications is great for farther areas of the house that the keypad sound cannot reach. Just these features that I mentioned, already gives Arlo a big advantage.
Now there are some cons that I noticed—not deal-breakers but something that has to be considered:1) there are no straight door sensors. Each sensor is a multi-sensor that includes EVERYTHING (that can be toggled through the app depending on what you want to monitor). You can select one, some, or all. The downside is, this makes the sensors a little pricier that other systems that have just a door sensor. I mean, sure, let’s say I can afford to have these multi sensor with each moving hatch I have in the house, there will just be so much overlap and inefficiencies, like for example my family room, living room and dining are all in an open floor plan. So there are 5 doors round one space and one big opening window. Though I can turn off the motion detection in 3 of the 5 doors, it won’t make sense for the other two to have it—thus making me spend the cost of a sensor for the unnecessary doors. 2) The keypad has motion detection too—and is actually pretty accurate if you ask me. However, alarm keypads are usually placed by main doors of entrances—like ours, so we can easily toggle on/off as we go through the door. But that will mean that the keypad sensor overlaps with the door sensor on the door it is installed at. So again, a little “over equipment” if you ask me. Again, these cons are not deal breakers. It’s just having two best men to your wedding; nice to have but a little unnecessary especially if one best man (sensor), is not that cheap.
Overall, I love the system and I am going to replace my current set up with this. LOL. Because I like all-in-one solutions, and the fact that Arlo integrates into my home automation set up, is one of the best things. I have great Arlo cameras, awesome doorbell, and now the home security system all placed in one solution at home through Google which includes everything like my lights, TVs, wifi devices, etc—and I did it all by myself. Now I can have professional monitoring in conjunction with the automations I customized myself in my house. Thanks Arlo. Seriously, you rock.

Compact, powerful and surprisingly enjoyable
on August 30, 2023
Posted by: DarR
This is the household’s newest favorite. It used to be only mommy on the dryer, when it’s office day or eat out weekend. But now, even the eldest boy (who happens to have the longest hair), and the two girls, 10 and 8 have discovered the ease of this speed dryer.
The previous family blow dryer was decent too, had mommy’s hair wavy and voluminous when she wants to. But it was a little too big and long. So only mommy and sometimes our boy would use it. But now, every one is raving about this speed dryer because even the girls are now on it too, especially after seeing the shiny results!
We used to have blow dryers that kept being replaced every so often. They were quite compact too but it broke down TWICE. So the solution was to get the more expensive ones, which had multiple attachments, but is HUGE. Use of that big dryer was limited to the adults and the pre teen.
But when the speed dryer arrived, they were surprised how such a compact device, unlike our old ones, can spew out power especially for really thick wet hair. The dryer was easy to handle and the attachments click easily in place. Plus, the packing itself and the manuals are so easy to understand, now the two girls are enjoying this. (Well, maybe a little too much, because grocery food trips should NOT involve blow dried hair—but sure). Settings are easy to switch too between users and between desired styles, so it easily works with different lengths and thickness.
I have never seen blow drying to be an enjoyable task—especially for this speed dryer which does fast results in “glossy in 1-2-3” as the youngest one says. The build looks durable so I am hoping this would last with the very frequent usage. Regardless, I think this speed dryer is a win!

Great app for babies, hardware needs some work
on August 24, 2023
Posted by: DarR
I am glad there are more advanced monitors that actually measure the child’s vitals—not just one that sees if they are breathing. This is a good start for a product, it just needs improvements.
Given the roadblocks, I give this a 3 star, but looking at it's potential, it can hit 4 stars. The vitals boot is the best part of this—and the software is intuitive seeing not just straight real-time vitals but matched with actual trends and logs—but the camera hardware and the connectivity needs a lot of work. Let me break this down.
Hardware: The boot was easy to set up. The app will pretty much guide you. As an android user, the app comes out in google play as “masimo stork” and it does not come up in the search if I type in just “stork” --it was not an instant app find. But once the app is installed and the profiles are set up, the app helped me set up the hardware. The boot was pretty easy to connect—I charged it and connected the device onto the boot easily. There was some back and forths with the sizing of the strap. And to you parents, this is very important--- make sure the at the correct-sized straps are installed. It was hard enough to get the baby to cooperate putting the boot on, all the more having to do it a number of times to get the right fit. I had to learn it the hard way—My first night was rough because the boot sizing was not right, so I kept getting notifications “sensor off baby”. After getting the boot straps right, as seen in the manual, I maybe had 4 “sensor off baby” notifications in my week of use, one of those times was when the baby was being fed and he had a somehow positioned his foot that it was not registering as on. When it was working, it is great to see oxygen levels and BPM, as well as the temperature. We had one night that we thought the baby was running hot to the touch, but vitals tells us 97 degrees so we’re good. (We did measure him separately with a thermometer and it was just off by 0.3 degrees F). This would come in handy especially when the baby starts teething—to measure any spikes in temperature.
The camera BUILD is great. The design looks good and the accessories to install it were well-thought out. The wires are long enough to run up the wall and there are wall covers for the wire too. The speakers are great too—for something this compact, the sound that comes out is pretty clear. However, the camera output quality is not great at all, which is a little frustrating for a camera in 2023. There are much better cameras out there. I thought at first it was only a setting that I can switch in the app- but no. It really is like that. The night vision is good—you can see in the dark but it does have some difficulty switching to regular mode—light was already on and most of the time, the video output stayed on night vision. It does measure humidity and temp which is good—but camera quality-wise, I am 100% sure, they can do much better.
Hardware connectivity is also concern. Multiple times, the sensor will go offline even if the baby was not moving. Connection will be interrupted and the camera or the boot will show that the device is offline. I have over 500Mbps internet and have a reliable mesh router system.
However, given all the device challenges, the software is really good. It actually I think is the great part of this whole thing. You can share the monitoring of the baby with trusted people, you can also see other kids that are shared with you using the same app, trigger the camera audio through the app (with a good selection of tunes!) and even talk to the baby through the camera using the app. Coupled with the vitals boot, the app is great in keeping track of the baby. Even the notifications are good because it will really wake you up if the sensor is off or devices are not connected. The bad part about this is, since the hardware loses connection, I will hear my phone beeping or the camera beeping at night. Everyone knows how hard it is to keep a fussy baby to sleep. At those times, the notifications were more of a nuisance. But there is one super big thing that amazed me though-- I had a notification about the baby being face down! He was actually being breast-fed at that time and was on his mom's tummy, but still-- that was good.
I really think this has the potential to be big but it just needs a lot of polishing. Now, it is all about hardware concerns and if they can only be corrected, this can be a good system to have for the baby. Hopefully there can be device firmware updates? I am hopeful.

Adjusts to the way I play!
on August 10, 2023
Posted by: DarR
First of all, I love the connectivity of this controller. Easy to switch from PS5 to PC and the wireless to wired option are all just clicks away and easy to understand without even looking at the manual. I have never tried the wired function, only because the wireless function is so easy—I just popped the USB dongle in, and I was ready to go—both PC and PS5 recognized them easily. I did not find any lag with the wireless function so that’s a super plus.
Setting up customizations was easy too, because the android app was very helpful and easy to use. If there was one thing that this controller does so well, is the queues in the controller itself, like the profile colors showing depending on what profile you choose, the click sound on the buttons, and the textures on the button surface, especially the added top and back buttons to avoid unnecessary clicks. Though the actual case of the controller feels like inexpensive plastic, the construction of the whole controller feels pretty solid. The bulk does need some getting used to especially on the thumb part of my palms. I don’t have big hands and the controller still feels good even though it’s a little on the thicker side—there’s just some adjustments that my hands needed to do because it first felt like my grip was cramping. After a good run of some CupHeads bosses as a warm up, my hands felt at home. Surprisingly, a controller with this much features do not differ in weight so much.
The extra buttons are pretty easy to reach, although I was hoping to get some combination customizations like LR + triangle for the fighting games or a one press button for my Need for Speed drifting. The app did not provide this flexibility. However, I love the way I can easily switch the trigger (R2) feel because in GTA 5, I switch a lot from driving to shooting and I cannot have a deep slack when shooting.
Battery life is fantastic—I have been on it for maybe 15 hours, and I still have half (per the mobile app) juice on this.
I love the idea that I do not have to switch controllers when I play on my PC and when I play on the PS5. I use this for both. Hopefully, in an update we can get combos with the button customization? Who knows. Right now, this is a great controller, and I recommend.

Great addition to the Simplisafe alarm system
on July 30, 2023
Posted by: DarR
I switched to Simplisafe years ago because they make home monitoring easy—without requiring connection to a dispatch center. This camera somewhat contradicts why I love Simpisafe, because the advantage of this camera is its connection to subscribed 24/7 monitoring. However, 24/7 monitoring is not required-- this camera actually gives me the flexibility should I need monitoring, and still just manage it on my own if I only want self-monitoring.
Adding the camera is simple although I had to use the keypad to connect it—adding it straight through the app kept failing wifi connection for some reason. Once added, it is included in the system like the other cameras I have except that it operates better: the resolution is better, the night vision is clearer, the sync is faster, and the ratio maximizes my phone view. This makes this camera a really good addition and an upgrade to the system. The camera is rock solid and is portable. The quality is great and the battery life—at least not having it plugged after two weeks I have been using it, is still at 75%.
Now the advantage of this camera for me is when we travel. We do have yearly trips, maybe at least twice and I worry about the security of our home. I do have the Simplisafe self-monitoring with video recording but this camera gives me the flexibility to subscribe to the fast response one when I need to—because their plans are commitment-free and can be switched at any time. Also, it is good to mention that this camera has a front shutter—so in any case I will feel like the Simplisafe team wants to take a peek at our dinner table, I will know though the privacy shutter.
So I think this is a no-brainer—if you have a Simplisafe alarm system, get one for yourself.

Welcome back in-person collaboration!
on July 4, 2023
Posted by: DarR
I used to hook up to meetings in a 70 inch TV but when we have to do a zoom huddle with a team in a boardroom, we hardly see each one in the room we’re meeting with (or at least pinpoint who is speaking). The TV is bright enough to see slides, but when details like where spreadsheets are involved or a long table of people in a room are attending, everyone needs to zoom in or sit closer. I’ve tried hooking up a usual data projector, but even if we can pull the window curtains shut, the glass walls of the meeting rooms have lights that wash out the projection. This was not a problem when everyone was working from home because we have our own screens to look at. Now that people are more open to meeting in person, this projector is THE solution.
This is where this projector literally shines: the screen is so bright and the details are so crisp, none of the big meeting woes exist. The screen is so bright, we don’t even have to turn off the lights in a room. And we can go as big as maybe 10 feet tall on a wall, and the details are still sharp (looks like we can go bigger, we just don’t have enough ceiling height). I reduce to 50% zoom on an excel sheet and still see details—so we can see as more rows and columns vs. the big TV or the “old” projector. I didn’t have to send spreadsheets in advance just for people to view them on their devices during the meeting. The colors are very vivid as well—it is very easy to make viewers be more engaged in the slides. Yes, expect more questions but you can have the opportunity to present much better too!
The sound is decent coming from the projector itself, but I usually hook up to an external speaker through Bluetooth coming from the laptop. This projector though has a 3.5mm jack, so that comes in handy as well, if you want to blast sound through bigger speakers.
Weight is pretty light too compared to its actual size so it is easy to transport, but I don’t think this was meant to be carried around any way. But it helps to not worry about windows. We practically can meet anywhere. We just did an offsite at this wonderful downtown LA peerspace loft with 360 windows. This projector received praises. Gone are the days where we have to reserve big boring dark rooms to present to bigger teams.
This projector makes collaboration easier, my peers are seeing the value why we do not have to work from home all the time.

Organizes my life at the ground level!
on June 23, 2023

This SPA 360 surge protector is perfect for most households, especially with the growing amount of items we use. Just with my workstation, I have multiple monitors, speaker plugs, phone charger, reading lamp and a USB-C hub. This outlet enables me to maximize the space of my wall outlet and organize the direction of my plugs, so I can easily position my wires to keep my desk clean. Each outlet provides ample space and clicks in place when I rotate them. It flexes to the position I need the plugs to be without straining the wires. Now I can stow away my multiple unsafe extension cords I used to space out the outlets by my workstation.
The USB outlets are also nicely organized on top. And since they output 45W, it activates fast charging on my tablet and mobile phone without having to use a 45W brick—this lessens the items that need an actual outlet. Also, the indicator lights let me know that the surge protection is working.
I don’t know why this has not been created years ago. It’s the simplest solution to a cluttered outlet. I want to get two more for our other rooms!

Classy and cute MONSTER
on June 23, 2023
Posted by: DarR
I can only say good things about this Dell XPS 13 Plus PC. If you are like me, who works from home over 50% of the time on multiple displays and peripherals through a USB-C hub, writes a ton of emails, opens humongous spreadsheets, maintains 1 million chrome tabs, renders occasional graphic tabs on canva for social media posts, who is middle-aged and needs an actual adult computer to bring to partner meetings, and requires speed in processing work on-the-go, be it cafes, airports or at the carwash, then look no further. I am telling you, this is the computer for you. Take note, I said computer, not just PC, because I think, any decent person like me should have this machine, including Mac users.
The design is top-notch. I think that is a given with this PC. Keyboard layout is fantastic—flush to the edges, like it’s screen, that’s why it can manage to be small and still have a big screen and comfortably typable keys. And the top-row keys is designed so well. Invisible trackpad is very clean and responds well when I type even when I have my thumb palms rested on it. Overall size is very slim and light. I have the graphite and I love the look. The other color, silver, does look timeless but I think that look is a 2010 kinda thing. So this graphite color looks more like it is 2020s. Of course, that’s my opinion—though I have always been ahead of the curve in terms of my own fashion (again, my opinion). It only has two USB-Cs—but they are both Thunderbolt 4, so it can take the load of my 16 port USB-hub. Having only 2 Thunderbolt ports keep the PC very slim—and I only need other ports when I am at my workstation. I do not need my multiple displays in a conference room, or my speakers, or my external camera. So the whole hardware design works for me—slim, sleek, and easy. And it does come with adapters for portability.
The screen is great—bright enough in a well-lit room and does not glare up bad—the blacks of the screen are insanely BLACK—so the dark modes of the new Microsoft office apps actually works so well with the OLED screen. Touch is very responsive too. But if I am not mistaken, the screen is more power hungry—so battery-wise, I do get a fast drain when I am not plugged. However, I carry a 65W , 22000mAH power pack with me for safety—though I have not really had the chance to use backup power on a regular on-the-go day, so battery is still good for my use. Plus the charging is brick is actually compact—so it easily fits in my petite computer clutch.
Performance-wise, it is very QUICK. I did not think I will need 32GB of RAM, until I opened my 170K row, 38 column spreadsheet. My previous 16GB machine on an i9 with dedicated video card struggled, especially when I would scroll and delete/clean up rows. This XPS helps me navigate through those rows in a breeze! (To all of you who pull queries, massage data, and have crazy vlookups on hundred thousand rows of excel, do yourself a favor.)
Now, camera is ok. It is not hi-res (takes away my blemishes, if you ask me), but I think it will help save on battery, which is when this camera was usually used—when I’m mobile. Because if not, I have an external camera set up at my home office—again, works for my lifestyle. Fan noise is tolerable and I only get hear it when I’m on my multiple screens—it is not even a bother.
Again, nothing really bad to say about this Dell XPS. It is a monster--- cute monster that is, that makes me feel dapper when I carry it around. I definitely recommend.

Best car mod ever!
on June 13, 2023
Posted by: DarR
This Rexing wireless CarPlay device changes everything for us—it simply makes a wired CarPlay, wireless—without any hassles of installation.
This to me is key: no installation hassles! I plugged this in a 2017 Mercedes GLS where the CarPlay is integrated in the unit. Everytime we ride and go, a phone has to be plugged in, then we’re ready to go. With this, we simply hop in the car and it is ready—no need for plugging.
Installation is super easy—instead of plugging in our phones, we simply plug in this device where the phone is supposed to be placed, and pairing happens on first set up, just like any Bluetooth pairing. After that, it automatically detects the paired device every time we start the car for an easy ride-and-go experience. The connection is fast, reliable and has a very long range of connection.
The only downside I see in this one is, we actually forgot the paired phone at home. The car was parked at the curb (instead of the garage), and we all rode the car and left. The CarPlay started and we assumed the phone was with us because the head unit started up. The connection on the device and the phone which was in a bedroom facing the street was so solid, we were able to enter directions in the CarPlay unit until the signal was lost two houses down—only to find out, the phone was not with us! Of course, now whoever reads this will now know what to look out for—and this I think is the only downside of this device.
I think this is a must for all who still plug in their phones for CarPlay.

Fresh and warm milk anywhere

This is probably one of the most innovative baby items this year. On our 4th infant in the past decade, we've seen it all and we've managed how to figure things out depending on the situation-- sure breastmilk can be placed in a cooler, sure you can put a bottle in lukewarm water (or even use a sous vide for controlled temperature). These are life hacks. But when you have an option like this Ember baby bottle warmer, it makes things so much easier.
If I need to step out quickly, but we know it will hit feeding time-- and the milk is stil in the fridge? I don't have to whip out the little cooler, fill it with an ice pack and go-- then when it's feeding time, the milk is still cold. I don't carry a bowl of hot water anywhere to put the bottle in. Now I am forced to feed the little one with cold milk. This is where this Ember baby bottle comes in very handy. In the week I had it, it is very convenient to bring this bottle to his siblings' soccer game and have the convenience of cooled-fresh-milk-but-warm-when-needed right in the middle of a game. I am sure it is useful for any similar situation.
The charger was good for at least 2 feedings. Although it is another added thing to charge, I usually just need the baby bottle for weekends and walks in between feedings. So battery capacity is not much of an issue-- I just need to make sure charging is part of the baby routine.
Another thing to mention is this includes multiple nipple options, so I can easily switch out the nipples in a few months as the little ones grows. Well, best part is the bottle with the cover, easily slips into the diaper bag pocket and is nicely designed that it has sparked interest from a couple of moms.
I know it is not a must-have, but once I used it, I did not know much I "needed" it. It simply makes feedings very convenient to pass on such a great innovation.
I would recommend this to a friend!
