A Good Entry in the Chromebook Market
on September 22, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
As many people know, there's basically two big players in the competition for schools and technology, and Google with Chromebooks, such as the Acer Chromebook Spin 714, is one of them. In recent years we've seen Chromebooks go from the poorly specced barely-better-than-a-netbook type performance to machines that actually have some chops.
The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is just one such entry. As with most laptops, it's packed in a nondescript rectangular laptop box without much to write home about, but upon removing it, you can already start to feel the quality in the device. Decent specs or not, it's rare to find a Chromebook that has metal construction as the price point of most of them just doesn't lend itself to anything better than plastic. The 714 is another story, the device is all metal and feels like quality in the hand. The hinge action is smooth, the screen is clear, the keyboard is tactile and responsive. A lot more than you'd expect out of most in this category. Top off that it's running a 12th gen Intel processor and you really have something worth talking about.
In use, the device is snappy, there have been zero issues with setup or functionality of it in any way. My daughter uses it regularly for her school work as it is a requirement of her school to have a Chromebook, they have even listed out specific hardware requirements that this handily beats. She has used the stylus for handwritten math problems and other such tasks and it is responsive. The fact that the screen fully flips around is a great thing particularly when attempting to write on it. In writing papers with the keyboard, both she and I have tested and it's got quite a nice feel to it. Just in general the construction of this device is very solid. Battery life lasts a whole school day and has plenty leftover in the evening for homework if she doesn't want to be tethered to her desk by a charging cable.
All in all, it's quite a good laptop, a step up when compared to most Chromebooks, well constructed and very good to use. I easily recommend this.

Simply the best one yet
on September 19, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
GoPro has become the expected name in action cameras for good reason. The cameras tend to do everything better than everyone else, have the best support and the most accessories.
To start, the GoPro Hero 11 Black comes packaged in brown paper around a canvas/nylon carry semi-hardcase, which I find to be very cool, and reminiscent of the previous generations. With all of these companies working towards renewable packaging, this is probably one of the best examples, simple paper with a carry case that is reusable by the customer rather than a bunch of single-use plastics. It may cost SLIGHTLY more than single use plastic, but honestly, in the way many of these companies create this stuff in volume, it's probably not so dramatic and it cuts down on the footprint of items like this. Plus, it just adds to the cool factor.
In setup, it's very straightforward, there's a little door in the side that houses the battery and a spot for an SD card. The camera is waterproof to 10 meters, but I haven't taken the time to test that yet (fundamentally I know things like this and my phone have an amount of water resistance, but there's still something about me and tossing electronics in the water, I suppose someday I'll get over it). The Hero 11 Black carries the same form factor as the previous generations, so it is easy to swap in mods and accessories from the previous gens without much concern. Of most note is the larger sensor in the camera to give it higher quality, larger images at higher resolution. The front facing screen is nice for keeping track of what the camera is recording when it is facing you.
I have to say though, the image quality is outstanding. The new sensor is superb, the aspect ratio gives an immense amount of control over the video, particularly if you need to crop or change things based on certain types of content creation. There's so much room to play with this here. I really cant say enough about this. In low light conditions, I still find the image to be quite good, though definitely not on the level of an appropriately lit image.
Really it's hard to find anything negative to say. There's an improvement with this camera over the 10, it's noticeable, and if you don't already own the 10, it's a worthy upgrade over most previous cameras in the line.
I easily recommend this to anyone in the market for an action camera.

Great Headphones, a cut above
on September 17, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
Over the years I've owned a number of wireless headphones, gaming headphones as it were, that lean towards the use with console, PC, or both, with varying degrees of success. In this instance, we are met with the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen2 Max, which, I have to say, is a great addition to the market.
To start, as these are marketed directly at Sony Playstation owners, the box art is leaning towards the blue, white and black colors that are the trademark colors of the Playstation and associated gear. This isn't a negative, but just a point of note, once compared with the alternative geared towards XBox owners. Turtle Beach has offerings in both markets, and both work with the consoles and with PCs through a simple flip of a switch on the USB dongle.
When unpacking the headset, the packaging is relatively no-frills, the headset is in a sleeve and contains the accessories required for use (in this case, the USB dongle). I popped the dongle into my Playstation and way I went.
There's no real 'set up' when using them with the playstation, it's truly a 'plug and play' experience, I connected them and they worked. The headphones themselves are incredibly comfortable, the padding on the ear cups is something else, extremely soft. Loading up COD I was immediately met with a depth of sound field, which is not a surprise because Turtle Beach is known for their audio. When playing on the battlefield and talking with my teammates, it's clear, full sounding and everyone comes through well. To use the mic you flip it down, to mute it, you flip it up. It's a very nice thing that the mic mostly conceals in the ear cup, as most headset offerings they are left to just stick out, looking like you've grown an antenna from the side of your head.
All in all these are really excellent headphones. I have one minor gripe that the charging is USB-C rather than coming with a cradle at this price point, but honestly it's a small gripe for the quality of the headphones. I would readily recommend them to anyone.

Don’t let the battery of your devices die as you go throughout your day. The Insignia NS-PW3X4AC2W22B 140W 4-Port USB & USB-C Desktop Charger Kit for MacBook Pro 16” and More has a high, 140-watt output to quickly charge your MacBook Pro, smartphone, tablet and more. It has two USB and two USB-C ports so you can connect your cables (not included) and charge up to four devices simultaneously. Its desktop design easily lets you stack up to 4 chargers on top of one another, granting you more charging options. A simple white design pairs well with your other accessories. Keep your desktop devices working as hard as you do with this 4-port charger.

High wattage PD device - very heavy
on September 15, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
I'm not sure what I expected when I got this, but to be honest, this wasn't really it. I've owned some power delivery devices before and they have tended to be a bit more compact/lighter weight than this one, but lets get into it.
Insignia has released a rather beefy USB power delivery device. I'm somewhat confused by the size and cost of it, the limitations that it has, but it has a number of good things as well. When compared to other PD devices, this appears to have a similar total power, though an oddly different mix.
Port 1 alone of USB-C is 140 watts
Port 1 + Port 2 USB-C is 100 watts + 30 watts
Port 1 of USB-A output is 12 watts
Port 1 + Port 2 USB A output is combined 15 watts (so roughly 7.5watts each)
Combined total power capability is 145w. Which if you're following along at home, means that 1x USB-C + 1x USB-A equates to one or both of them not delivering full power. I do not have a way to measure power output on the individual ports, this information comes from the small print on the bottom of the device.
The good: Lots of power if you dont have multiple devices connected to it. The standard pronged plug passthrough outlet on the top is is a nice added benefit, meaning you're not giving up the outlet completely to use this. The plug in the back flips down to either hang from the wall or attach the extension that comes with it so you can place it on the floor or a desktop.
The bad: It's very heavy. Heavier than most laptop power supplies for laptops that would benefit from 140w total power. In addition, it doesn't come with any other cables, so assuming you need to use it for powering a laptop, you need to purchase a separate USB-C to USB-C cable for power delivery.
A benefit of this though is that if you travel a lot, even with its additional weight, it saves you from having to carry multiple chargers for laptop, phone, plus whatever else you intend to use.
I've tested this with a Macbook Pro and my Dell that I use for work and there's been no issues with power supplying to either. It is convenient to have the extension so I can place it on my desk. Unfortunately it just has hard plastic feet, so the unit slides when I try to connect a device to it.
All in all, it's somewhat of an odd mix of convenience and annoyance. I appreciate the extension, the high amount of power, and the 2 pronged standard plug passthrough. But the weight, strange power distribution and no rubber feet so it doesn't slide add up to a mixed bag of a device.
I would recommend it provided you understand what you are purchasing.

The De Facto Standard
on September 13, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
When it comes to streaming microphones, there's a few decent options out there, however, the one that has become the recognized de facto standard is the Blue Yeti. Whether you're a new streamer or one that has been doing it for years, the Blue Yeti tends to be the workhorse on which most streamers started and established themselves, and the one with which most streamers use for their day-to-day streams.
To start, this is a bundle, it comes with some custom Streamlabs skins, a Pop Filter with the Blue logo on it, and of course the microphone itself. The microphone is mounted on a small desktop stand, but can be attached to a standard microphone arm through the threaded port on the bottom. It connects to your machine via USB.
Initial setup is extremely straightforward, plug in the USB to your PC, attach the pop filter and start playing around with it. For most people, the software of choice is OBS, Streamlabs has their own custom version of OBS which integrates with the Streamlabs overlays, skins, tools, filters and merchandising platform. It's easy to start for a beginner, but has numerous advanced settings to really customize your broadcast.
OBS immediately recognizes the microphone and applies a set of settings to it, which... aren't the best. I wont go too much into OBS settings as it can range from simple to complex, and not only that, each person has their own goals for their own sound.. Instead, I'll focus on the microphone itself. For me it took a little bit of learning to get it to have the sound I wanted without any distortion (be careful with that gain dial, it's better to adjust the volume in the software).
It's important to note that you want to talk at the SIDE of the microphone, not into the top of it like we all believe to be correct after watching live TV and music over the years. This is a 360' microphone which means you can adjust the direction that it picks up sound from, either everywhere, or in one, or a small number of directions (this is handled through the 'pattern' dial. Imagine the images around the dial as representations of where the sound is picked up).
I'd strongly recommend researching what works best for your environment, style and type of content you plan on creating to determine the best settings both in Streamlabs OBS and with the various dials on the microphone as well.
Final thoughts, this is the microphone that will carry you well into your streaming career. I strongly recommend this microphone.

Lightweight, comfortable, wireless - great sound
on September 8, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
Over the years I've had a number of different headsets, but some of my favorite have been those that include a charging base station. It's one less thing to have to keep track of in terms of wires for charging or dongles for connecting wirelessly. The single all-in-one unit is a great thing.
Enter the RIG 800 Pro HX. The headset comes to the party with a lot of things you find on more expensive headsets. The charging cradle, wireless, lightweight, good fit (very custom fit, more on that in a minute), Dolby Atmos, etc.
To start, the packaging is very green and black XBox oriented, which makes sense as it is designed for use with both XBox and PC, of which I've tried it on both. Connecting is a no frills USB connection which works as both power for the dock and the USB connection for the wireless. No extra power brick, no dongle, no muss.
When using the headset, the sound is clean and clear, maybe not quite a full as another more expensive headset, but definitely no slouch either. It honestly feels like they did not have to skimp anywhere in this headset. The only gripe I have is that the microphone feels a little fragile, due to the thin posable arm that it is connected to, but even then, it can be flipped up to get it out of the way or mute it.
I've watched videos, played call of duty, plants vs zombies, etc... in every case, the sound comes through faithfully reproduced and clear. When speaking to others through the mic I'm told I am clear without any issues.
Now for where this headset really shines. The fit. The ear cups are removable and repositionable on each side in 3 preset locations. The inner band of the headband is flexible and stretchy and can be removed for larger heads. The ear cups themselves are very comfortable and the headset is not heavy. There is really a significant number of ways to configure the headset to fit anyone's head.
All in all, I really feel like at this price point there is no sacrifice in quality or features. The single USB connection for all functions, wireless, a charging dock, repositionable fit, weight, sound quality... I could go on. This is a very good option for anyone playing XBox or on PC (selectable with a switch on the side). If you're in the market for something with all of these features and cannot choose a more expensive one, this really does find itself a good place among them even at a lower price point.

Over the years I've owned MANY sound bars. Many is an understatement. In my house at this moment I have at least 4 (5 now) plugged in and functioning sound bars of various makes and manufacturers. Each of them has their own pluses and minuses, however I was really looking forward to setting this one up. Unfortunately, disappointment ensued.
To start, the packaging is much as you'd expect, the sound bar is nestled in a relatively nondescript long rectangular box with an image on the front of the bar and it is packed in Styrofoam. It comes with the remote, some documentation and an HDMI cable.
On setup, the sound bar is seen by my Samsung TV and it switches to the input for it. There's a relatively simple setup process whereby it connects to WiFi, allows you to set up Alexa or Chromecast integration, and configures the 360 audio if you have the rear speakers and the sub (both of which are sold separately). The 360 audio setup is actually very cool, each of the speakers emits a series of tones which is picked up by the soundbar to allow it to adjust the audio for the room it is set up in.
Then came the movie watching... For starters, I brought up Jurassic Park. Who can match the sweeping sounds of John Williams as the score for Jurassic Park is played directly after Dr Grant and Dr Sattler see the Brachiosaurus for the first time. The audio is... tinny. The conversation between the characters is flat. The review is for the soundbar, so I'll leave out too much commentary on the surround speakers and sub, but I have to say, that the surrounds are underutilized, and the subwoofer is boomy at best. But returning to the sound bar... much of the midrange is lost on the bar itself. John Williams lovely Jurassic Park score, which sounds good just because of what it is, loses a lot of its depth and fullness. As the movie continues, it just becomes more and more apparent that the mids are just way too weak in this sound bar, from the crunching branches as the T-Rex approaches, so the freight-train sound of its roar... All of it sounds too high and a little too flat.
Watching TV is an even less impressive endeavor. All of the channels I watched the sound was flat and uninspired. There's not a whole lot in the way of customization for the audio for this sound bar, and cycling through the settings did not change the experience much.
For the cost of the sound bar alone, it's a rather steep price for subpar sound, even once you add the wireless subwoofer, it cannot make up for the utter lack of midrange in the bar.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this, particularly at this price.

Tons of fun
on August 11, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
I'd been looking for a companion scooter to go with my Highlander Pro to get a pair of us out and scooting about together. With this I feel like I've met the right answer to what I was looking for.
To start, packaging is fairly straightforward, in the box the shaft and handlebars are disconnected from the unit with just the wires running through. You screw in a few screws and you're ready. They, of course, recommend you charge it up for 8 hours before you use it, but I couldn't resist, I tried it just a tiny bit before I plugged it in for a full charge.
The look of the scooter is great, it has the similar look of all of the electric scooters that are currently available, but the foot pad having the built in LEDs really makes it stand out, especially in the dark. You can see this coming from a mile away. When compared to the Highlander Pro, also made by Hover-1 it says it is 1 mph slower, but you cant really tell. It's also VERY slightly smaller and has a lower range, but it's marketed at a different segment. I feel like for what they are aiming for, they hit the mark dead on.
But how does it ride? It's really "just fun". I cant describe it any better. I grew up using self propelled scooters and enjoyed them of course, but when you're on this, even though it's only 14 mph, it feels fast, maybe because you're not pushing it yourself. You hop on, kick off, hit the accelerator, and off you go. Turn on some lights and it's like a 14 mph discoball for your feet. It's really enjoyable to ride on, compact once folded and easy to use.
I really cant say enough about it. It may not have the removable battery of some of the others, but who cares. We really enjoy it.

Logitech delivers again.
on August 3, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
What can I say, when it comes to computer peripherals, I would argue that Logitech has become the de facto standard. If you're buying a mouse, it's Logitech, keyboard, Logitech, speakers, Logitech, headphones, Logitech. Why? Because they do it well, and here is no excuse.
To start, the packaging is straightforward, a simple box containing the headset, the wireless dongle, the charging cord and a carrying bag. I would argue that the carrying bag is pointless as who is going to walk around with a headset of this size, but I digress.
The headphones themselves are solid and well made without being heavy, I appreciate the hidden boom mic that you can fold down from the front and that disappears almost entirely when not needed. The charging port is USB Type-C which everything should be these days, so it's good to see Logitech embracing this in these headphones, really there's nothing to complain about as it relates to the design and construction. I do wish there was a dock for it rather than having to use a wire, but I also understand that's usually in headsets that are more expensive than this one. Overall it's a clean looking and comfortable headset.
Connecting was a breeze, plug in the dongle and go. The battery life is immense, with normal use I am not having to charge them but every 3-4 days. The documentation states 18 hours of battery life and I would have to say it's pretty accurate and very welcome. I never have to worry about picking them up and finding them dead with that much life.
The sound is very good. I would say it's not the best I've ever experienced, but definitely very good. Again this isn't necessarily a 'premium' headset, so at this price range it definitely holds its own. The range is good as well, since it uses a dongle instead of Bluetooth, I find that I can navigate most of my home without losing connectivity, which is a bonus. That said, the headset DOES support Bluetooth, but since I'm using it with my PC, I prefer the dongle for the stability of connection and range.
If you're in the market for a headset with some serious range (when using the USB dongle), has a clean look, tons of battery life and very good sound, this is what you need. The hidden boom mic is a bonus for me, as it can be used in Discord or any other VOIP software or with your phone as needed. I heartily recommend this.

TP-Link Keeps You In Control
on July 18, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
I've had a number of different routers and mesh systems recently. I have to say that the vast majority of them not only disappoint, but have taken the power of the device away from the user. I get that in many cases it's an effort to make it easier for more individuals to set up the devices, but what about those of us who are a bit more tech savvy, those of us who want more control and more power in our devices. That's where TP-Link shines.
To start, the router is packaged well, if in a no frills box that protects it and doesn't do much more. That's fine in my opinion, I'm not looking for a pretty box, I'm looking for a functional and powerful device and that's where TP-Link delivers.
When configuring the device it quickly steps you through the basic items, type of internet connection, WiFi name, password setup, etc. Once you complete the setup, you're presented with more of a classic interface for routers with many advanced options including VPN server and client options (the VPN client configuration is new in recent firmware for home use routers from TP-Link, and a welcome addition).
With the capability to control everything from your subnet to DHCP scope, dynamic DNS, VPN, even cloud connectivity, as well as the ability to mesh other TP-Link devices together, there's really no lack of configuration options in the device and the flexibility to do with it what you want.
For me, all of this was a welcome thing to see as, like I previously mentioned, many recent devices I've used take the power away from the user. In a recent router I've owned, there wasn't any method to see the error logs or even update the firmware yourself. All other advanced options I just mentioned were entirely absent in the other device.
Now for the performance. It's definitely no slouch. I was able to utilize the full speed of my 500 mbps cable connection without issues. The range of the device covers my 2600 sqft house without issue with range to spare. I've connected the VPN client in this device to the VPN server in a different TP-Link router to give me access to another family member's network. All in all, it really does keep the control in my hands, where I want it. I happily recommend this router to anyone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Jabra Elite 7 Pro true wireless earbuds have MultiSensor Voice™ technology, which combines 4 powerful microphones, an advanced Voice Pick Up (VPU) sensor in each Bluetooth earbud, and unique Jabra algorithms. Automatically activating when it’s windy, Jabra MultiSensor Voice™ uses bone conduction technology to transmit your voice through vibrations in your jaw, for wind noise cancellation and clear calls anywhere. Thanks to the adjustable Active Noise Cancellation, the ultra-compact earphones with rich and powerful sound lets you fully immerse yourself in your music. Multipoint connects to 2 devices at once, lets you seamlessly switch between devices, and is available as a firmware update via the Jabra Sound+ app. Also test your hearing in the Jabra Sound+ app, and tailor your music to suit your individual hearing profile. Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Convert your digital pictures into analog prints using this Polaroid Lab. The I-Type and 600 series film let you print photos instantly while the built-in LiIon battery is long-lasting and rechargeable via USB. This Polaroid Lab is compatible with iPhones operating with iOS 11 or newer and Android 7 and above.

What size is the actual photo that is printed? And can multiple phones be used on it?

The lab uses polaroid originals type-i film which is 4.2x3.5"

You can use as many phones on it as you want

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Keep your floors spotless with this Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum. Its sensors and mapping system automatically adapt to the pattern of floors in the home and effectively avoid obstacles. This Alexa-compatible Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum provides maximum cleaning coverage including edges and corners thanks to its sophisticated edge-cleaning technology.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
