Mobile cooling and heating
on April 27, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I'll start by saying I've never really used something like this before, I don't know that I knew something like this existed outside of those little USB powered fans that break after 3 uses. Having something that can ACTIVELY cool or heat is quite novel in my opinion.
I am routinely one that runs too hot. Working outside or in many situations, I'm always just too warm. When finding this device I knew it would be perfect for me. Operation of it is very simple. While it does have app capabilities, the device itself only has two buttons. One to turn it on and one to change modes (heat, fan, cool). I almost exclusively use the cool function. Turning it on, the cold plates on the inside become cool very quickly. I wouldn't say they are 'cold' but it's definitely MUCH cooler than ambient air (to the point that if it's a cool day, it becomes uncomfortably cold). Add to that the fan blowing up towards your face and it creates a very comfortable situation, at least for your head.
The app makes the control of the temp even more granular, adding a few sliders for the fan paired with different comfort functions. It's really quite nice.
Battery life isn't the 'best' but it's not bad considering what it does. The fan will last the longest, as it's not actively using the heating or cooling capabilities, but if you use them you'll get a couple of hours. I feel like for the size of this device, a larger battery would have been easy to figure out. It's not small or lightweight, so what's the weight of a slightly larger battery.
All in all it's excellent at what it does and is going to become my favorite device using through the heat of the summer to work indoors or outdoors. I heartily recommend it to anyone

Good Color Laser All-in-one
on March 14, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
Printers are routinely viewed as the demons of the technology world, they never seem to work right, get jammed, have issues, are difficult to install, configure, make work consistently, etc. In recent years, at least on the consumer side, things have been slowly improving, and I have to say that this printer has made large strides in that regard.
To start, it's well packaged in a heavy box with thick styrofoam, fairly par-for-the-course in terms of packing. It comes with a power cord, documentation, a CD (who still uses a CD for drivers anymore?), and a plastic piece that has no explanation (more on that in a minute). It was listed in the documentation as including a network cable, but mine did not have one (I did not need it, so no big deal, I connected it via WIFI).
Which brings us to setup. I plugged it in, went through the quick setup instructions which arent 100% clear, it mentions doing the color correction step which failed for me, and then it eventually brings you to the auto-reorder for the supplies (toner) which is not a required step but the instructions dont explain how to not have it (just pick decline) or how to set it up (it states you need to have configured that before setting up the printer, then you'd hit accept... again, not clear). But once stumbling through the quick setup, it kinda just 'works' which is a big part of the annoyance with printers.
I went through the install on the PC for the drivers which I downloaded as opposed to using the CD (I dont have a CDROM drive anymore). The install was straightforward, it does state during the install that you need to ensure that the firewall on your machine is open, but it does not appear to do that for you (strange limitation). Fortunately my McAfee software opened it automatically just by identifying that it was printer software. The printer driver and scanner software appear to be separate but the install was quick enough and the test page printed successfully.
When installing this on my work laptop I was prevented from installing the Canon driver software, but fortunately the default Windows drivers were allowed and worked perfectly.
As for the function of the printer itself. It spins up very quickly and the first print is available in rapid fashion. It prints very quickly and the color reproduction is great (even with the failed color calibration task from the quick setup). Copying is straightforward both on the flatbed and with the document feeder, which is something I'll use a lot. And finally, scanning is good, but be sure to open the Scan software on the PC first.
Some things to note: You may have challenges if your firewall or antivirus software needs a manual entry for the canon software, so just be aware. Second, I'm not sure why the color calibration failed to run on a brand new printer fresh out of the box, but it didn't seem to matter. Finally, the toner is EXTREMELY expensive, costing almost as much as the printer to replace the full set. I'm waiting for third party toner to be available, but right now it is not.
All in all, it's a pretty good printer, a few minor issues in setup, but the function is good. Barring the issues above it works well and the stumbles were minor, but someone without my technical background may find this more challenging to set up than it should be.

Blades for an interesting razor
on February 21, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I recently completed a review of the Oneblade Pro 360 which, as I stated in that review, is interesting, but I really find that it is incomplete as an 'all in one' type system, particularly if you find that you give yourself a few days between shavings as I do. These blades do well enough for continual maintenance if that is your thing, but going more than a few days between shaves and they just require too much effort. That said, they do seem to have a reasonable amount of life to them, likely longer because of what I mentioned about not shaving every day. They are safe to use and dont seem to catch skin or pull hair which is very nice. I did mention the razor itself works well in a 'travel' type usage scenario since it's an all in one unit and I'll say it's far nicer than most travel type blades I've ever used and would easily turn to something like this for the convenience and comfort when on the road. Overall, the blades work well enough if you consider the limitations of the devices as a whole.

An Interesting shaver
on February 21, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
So the Oneblade Pro is an interesting shaver, as my title states. It touts that it can do it all, and I will admit that it at least comes close to be able to do it all. The shaver itself is a different take than most razors or clippers unit with exposed blades on either side that are safe against the skin but allow you to get closer than clippers (though not as close as some other electric razors in my opinion). With the angled though flexible blade it seems to force you to hold the razor in a specific orientation unless you are "edging", in which case you can flip it upside down to get close and precise. I will say precision is where this device really wins out, with such a thin edge to work with, much narrower than most clippers, it allows you to be extremely sharp with your edges. But beyond that type of work, it tends to get a little bogged down in beard hair that is more than just a few days in length, particularly if you use the attachable guide comb. The problem with the comb is that it only allows one side of the blade to clip at a time, somewhat limiting the life of the razor to just the one side and it doesn't allow the clipped hair to exit the back side of it very freely. I find that if I've let my beard grow for a week, it just takes far too much effort to trim, shave and edge with this unit and would rather use my separate clippers and razor. To me it functions well as a travel device, better than bringing a full sized unit (or multiple units) and it might even do well for everyday shaving if you keep up with it, but if you are like me and you let your beard go for a few days between cleaning it up, it just doesn't cut it.

Close, but not the best
on November 10, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
Recently I've has the opportunity to try a few different antivirus+identity protection products to varying degrees of success. McAfee is another entry with a well known name that has been around forever but is becoming somewhat lost in the crowd.
To start, installation is straightforward. It's nice that it has an unlimited device option, though I imagine for most people it's way more than they need. Using a competing product with 20 licenses, I've only managed to install about 7 of them and covered my whole family, PCs, phones, everything. It may be a pricing tier/differentiation that in the long run, doesn't really matter.
Once installed it also has you go through the setup of its identity protection functions, which while nice, seem to be a bit limited when compared to stronger names in this arena. They do have more expensive tiers, as do their competitors, but when you're already having to pay a yearly subscription for your AV, do you really want another cost on top of it? It seems a bit extraneous to me.
Scanning is straightforward and quick, McAfee doesn't carry the same amount of bloat as some competitors, though more than others. Again, still managing to find itself somewhere in the middle of the pack. It's also less spam-y with advertisements when being used when compared to some competitors.
What I do like is the unlimited VPN. In these days it's nice to have an option that secures your traffic leaving your premises if you so choose.
All in all, it's got nice features if somewhat average when compared to competitors, the unlimited is nice if a bit extra, and the addon features, as with their competitors, are just an unneeded added expense. VPN is great though.
AV products tend to be a bit polarizing in terms of who likes what brand, and if McAfee is your thing, then it's a worthwhile advancement over previous generations... If it's not, then there's nothing here that really makes it stand out from the pack.

A Meeting Focused Webcam
on November 7, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
There is an endless number of webcams available these days with all sorts of features, resolutions, connectivity options, etc. Making another webcam in the sea of existing webcams makes one wonder what can let it stand out. For Logitech, it goes without saying that it's a manufacturer people will look to first before exploring other options, so when making a webcam, they have the opportunity to find that audience first.
The Brio 500 is really a business/meeting focused webcam. There's nothing that makes it particularly stand out for the gaming/streaming crowd as even the framerate isn't particularly high, topping out at 30 fps at 1080p. So why choose it?
It is designed as a no fuss business oriented webcam to work with meeting software like Zoom and give you an excellent image without having to mess around with a bunch of settings to get it right.
Out of the box, plugged in and running was seconds for me. I didn't need to spend an excessive amount of time messing with exposure or anything along those lines to make the image look right. The built in light balancing functionality of the camera made the image look excellent right away.
On the note of the box, it's a small rectangle unassuming box. Logitech has been leaning towards sustainable practices with their recent packaging and this is one example. It's mostly recyclable and takes up very little space. Nothing excessive here.
The webcam itself comes with a 5ft permanently attached USB-C cable which I will argue is far too short for anyone using anything besides a laptop. Anyone with a desktop or PC tower is usually going to be much further away from the monitor where you would want to mount this camera than the included 5ft cable, which leaves you in a place of hunting for an extension cable of some sort. Add on the fact that it is USB-C and you're limiting your audience further unless you purchase an adapter for USB-A to USB-C. But again, this is business oriented, and most business laptops in the last 4-ish or so years tend to include at least 1 USB-C port.
Other features include a flip to close lens cover, activated by rotating the circular dial on the right side of the camera itself. A 'show mode' which is essentially just a hinge under the camera to allow you to flip the camera downward to show your desk (useful if you take classes online and need to show your work to your teacher/professor/proctor), a 'micro suction' camera attachment to prevent it from falling off the monitor, and the ability to attach to a tripod by removing the attached monitor mount.
All in all it's a very worthy meeting-oriented webcam. It will do for things beyond that if you understand the limitations, but if you need it for streaming services, there are better and more customizable options in the same or similar price range.
I would recommend it provided you understand and use it for what it is designed for.

Worthy Upgrade to the Google Nest WIFI Line
on November 6, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
The Google Nest Wifi Pro is the next in the line of the Google Nest WiFi mesh devices. It's good to see a relatively affordable AXE capable mesh system especially one with the support of Google behind it.
To start, it's in the same low impact white box that most Google products come in, which is good to see honestly. The exorbitant packaging of some of the competitors in this area is just unneeded and a waste of materials.
Upon opening you're met with a small and unassuming device, smaller than most AXE routers of similar capability (honestly I was shocked at the physical size of many of them). It comes in a few different colors and doesn't look like the spider-esque monstrosities that are commonly available in the performance home router segment. This is important because a lot of people hide routers away in cabinets and other places simply because they are so ugly unless you're a tech person with a flare for the robotic dramatics that much of them look like. The way it looks allows you to really put it anywhere and give your home the best access to WiFi (especially the 6GHz band as the higher you go in the bands the more difficult it is for them to pass through doors, floors and walls (and furniture if you're trying to hide it away).
Upon setup it's very straightfoward, the setup is performed through the Google Home app and is detected automatically. It has two ethernet ports (one for WAN, one for LAN) as is common in these mesh devices of a certain size. If you need more, a simple switch can help.
In terms of capabilities, it's capable of the AXE protocol suite, which, if you're keeping track at home means WIFI 6E. This is important as it contains all of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz capabilities of AX and earlier devices, with the newer 6GHz spectrum if your device supports it. Many new devices (including a lot of motherboards currently being released for the newest processors) come capable of WIFI 6E out of the box. The router is capable of both Matter and Thread smart home mesh technologies should you have devices capable of it. Matter is an important feature as, shockingly, many of the biggest names in smart home devices have collaborated in creating a standard together so we can get away from so many competing and incompatible technologies. The parental controls are blessedly included and free of charge unlike certain competitors, although they are just a bit on the basic side.
For performance, I had no issues, speaking of those new motherboards, I just built a new PC with AXE capability and it connected easily and at great speed. Keeping in mind again that the 6GHz band while faster, does not pass through walls and floors as easily as I previously mentioned.
What's missing? For it to be AXE capable, it's a bit of a disappointment that the WAN is not multi-gig capable. While most home users dont even have 1 gig fiber, much less multi-gig, they've built in a bit of obsolescence in this device by neglecting that. If they allowed for link bonding that would help, but then you'd lose a port usable for a LAN connection.
Final thought, if you're in the market for an AXE/WIFI 6E capable mesh network with a ton of features and doesn't look like a monster from a scifi movie, this is the one for you. I easily recommend it.

Decent protection - very chatty
on November 3, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
At this point in time everyone is familiar with various AV programs and it's up to these companies to not only remain good at what they do, but also increase their offerings and be lucrative, I do understand this. In that vein, Norton is now being shipped with LifeLock identity advisor to help with identity protection.
To start, the installation is incredibly straightforward, there's no issues in getting it installed, whether on the first machine or multiple machines. Go to the website, input the key, download the installer and go. If you're installing on an additional machine you simply click 'protect another device' and you are taken to a site to download an installer that already has everything ready to go. You do not have to login with your Norton account on the additional devices if you choose not to.
Norton includes all the basic protection, firewall, antivirus, and some other addon services as well as VPN and parental controls. There's not a huge amount to write home about here as these are common offerings among antivirus programs at this point. However the one thing it does come with is LifeLock which is the most recognized name in identity protection. It allows you to monitor the information for one adult on the web/dark web for breaches that could harm your identity.
The challenges I've had with Norton in this iteration (and to be honest, most previous iterations) is that it's incredibly chatty. There's all sorts of little notifications that pop up in the corner when it's performing various tasks, whether normal scanning, 'background tasks' or, most annoyingly, attempting to sell you more services. Personally I have major issues with software I paid for trying to make me pay for additional things. There seems to be no great way to make it stop sending these messages. If you close any of the notifications with the 'X' in the corner it does give an option often to 'do not show this again', however in my experience that seems to only intermittently work. Some of the notifications are now showing up less frequently or not at all, but others are still coming up no matter how often I make that selection.
I moved to Norton to get away from another product that was basically doing the same thing, and while I have most of a year left on this, I'm not sure I can see myself staying with it just because of the annoyance of those chatty alerts.
All in all, it's decent protection both for your PC and mobile devices, as well as for your identity, but the chattiness of the software makes it hard to recommend.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Staying ahead of the class
on October 24, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
Netgear routinely releases routers that are some of the best in the market, whether it's a mesh system or single router solution like this one, you're in good hands when selecting one of their products at appropriate speed, capability and coverage for your environment. The Netgear Nighthawk AXE7300 is equally one of those options.
To start, it's packaged in the same blue and black liveried box that most Netgear equipment comes in. I'm a particular fan of this new shape of router that looks like batwings when opened up. Moving away from the spider-esque design of so many antennas is a welcome thing as I think most people try to hide away their devices from being seen because they are eyesores. Unfortunately that usually means putting them in cabinets or behind furniture, which greatly reduces the capability of the device, particularly in the higher frequencies which is much more attenuated by materials that it has to pass through.
In setup, the Nighthawk AXE7300 is much like the majority of routers of this era, with a web interface that walks you through basic setup, or the option to use an app on your phone. I've not been a particular fan of any of the apps that manage the routers, but I will say that this generation has seen an improvement in that regard.
As for use, it's nice to see the WiFi 6E devices becoming commonplace and affordable. My new WiFi 6E capable motherboard connects easily and quickly to the router on the 6GHz band and performs well, I've not had any concerns of connectivity or performance. My existing AX and older devices also have no issues. Throughput is good, coverage is good, although as expected, when putting more doors, walls and floors between myself and the router, the range starts to drop a lot.
The one thing that I'd like to see Netgear do more is the add-on mesh capability that many of the other manufacturers offer, the ability to turn multiple similar era devices into an ad-hoc mesh system rather than having to buy a mesh-specific system. Netgear has some of the best mesh units in the business, but no capability to do it without buying a mesh-specific system.
All in all, this is a great router with decent range and excellent throughput. If the area you are intending to cover is within the capabilities of this device, I heartily recommend it.

It can literally cook anything
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
So air fryers at this point are a dime a dozen, and it seems like people are constantly finding new ways to use them, new things to cook in them, more uses for them because they are so easy to use.
Enter the Bella Pro Series 4.2qt air fryer. Now, this one, unlike many others, is fairly basic, with an analog dial as opposed to any digital display, but honestly the ease of use is nice. It has a dial at the top for temp and a dial on the front for time, it really doesn't need anything else.
What I've tried... Well, I'm sure some of you have seen the TikTok hard boiled eggs done in an air fryer... tried that and it worked great. I've made cookies in it, I've fried chicken in it, many things that call for regular frying or even just regular cooking I just toss in here first because it's so easy. I really don't have any complaints. No fancy settings or displays or anything, it 'just works', and there's a lot to be said about that.
This is an easy recommendation, no issues, no muss, no fuss.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
