A cut above

I've owned many wireless earbuds over the years, from many tiers of quality and price. I've come to settle on my favorites in terms of affordability, comfort and quality, and to get me to stray from them takes quite a monumental effort. Of the ones I prefer, I've owned at least 5 different sets. Now I have the Denon PerL Pro Earbuds and I have to say... I'm a convert.
To take someone like me who is so set in their ways and preferences to move to something entirely different is no small feat. But from the packaging to the fit to the build quality and the customization options, I find that these truly have no equal.
They start much like any other true wireless headset, nestled in their charging case. They come with multiple ear gels and the type of fitting piece that allows you to use the curve of your ear rather than the inside of your ear for fit, this may be a preference to some people (I know I used to greatly dislike any form of 'canal bud' as I routinely called these types. Find your comfort, put them in and move forward. One point worth noting, these are a little bit larger outside the ear than a lot of wireless earbuds, so they are definitely noticeable.
A simple pairing later and load up the app and you're greeted with what really makes these stand out. The level of customization that is available, whether from the equalizer, the ability to multipoint connect, allow ambient sound through (social mode, as they call it) and many other premium type options that many of the lower-end headsets just dont have are available. I do find it interesting that you can make multiple profiles, I suppose as a single individual you could do that to make different soundscapes for different types of audio (gaming, movies, music) but I can't imagine myself ever sharing a set of earbuds with another person, so profiles in regards to multiple users seems an oddity, though that seems to be how they are marketed, with their sound profile creation... A strange thing to me.
Once the initial sound profile is set up, there is just a matter of use and switching to noise cancellation or not as you prefer. I have to say that Denon has done something of a masterwork with these earbuds. The long battery life is amazing (probably why the size is notable) and the ability to quick charge from the case in just a few minutes is astounding (worth it to me who spends most of my work day on the phone).
Really, it's difficult to find fault with these, and again aside from the larger size than many, I really can't find any, even the size thing is not worth deducting from them, they are just that good. All in all, if you're in the market for a premium set of earbuds, these are the ones, consider no others.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Fast, high quality printer
on November 19, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've owned a brother all-in-one for the last 6 or so years and being in the market to upgrade I was wanting to keep Brother in mind due to the experience I've had with my previous one. The Brother HL-L3280CDW is exactly what I hoped for, a full featured, fast, high quality color laser with wireless capabilties.
Packaging is much as you'd expect from any printer these days, comes in a standard box, packed in foam with necessary documentation and a power cable. The printer itself is fairly compact when compared to many other color lasers of similar capability, just as all Brother lasers tend to be. This one uses the new L229 cartridges which is the next iteration up from their previous line which has had a long and noteworthy existence in their previous generation of laser printers, so there's a good chance this toner line will be used in multiple of their lasers as well.
Connecting it to my wireless network and having it found by my PC was nearly a no brainer. Navigate the menus on the screen, attach to the network and search for the printer in Windows. I downloaded the Brother printer drivers and software, but the default printing capabilities of Windows 11 was able to function with it without having to install additional drivers if you didn't desire to do so.
Printing is fast and high quality, as the title suggests, I'd say it's a fair amount faster than my previous Brother color laser, so it's good to see. Warm up time seems to be a touch faster as well.
All in all, while this may just be a printer and not an all-in-one, if you're in the market for a wireless color laser with good quality prints, this really would be the workhorse quality device you're looking for. I heartily recommend it.

Affordable Radar detector with excellent range
on November 18, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've been in the market to upgrade my radar detector for a while, just looking for that right device to make the move. I have to say I've found and settled on the right device. There's a lot of devices in this market and they run the gambit between cheap and extremely expensive, with varying levels of sensitivity and features to come along with it. The Cobra RAD 700i really bridges that gap, offering some of the more expensive features and excellent range without compromising accuracy or quality.
To start, it's packaged well, about as you'd expect, nestled in a cardboard box covered with a thinner printed jacket. It comes with everything you need to get rolling, the 12v car adapter, a magnetic suction cup mount, the radar detector and some literature. The one thing I would recommend doing is getting a magnetic mirror mount, whether or not you have a car that is capable of powering a radar detector from the mirror, I've found that it reduces the vibration in the radar detector significantly to go with a mirror mount, and it get's it up and out of the way of your line of sight.
Setup is easy, the app is downloadable from the apple and google play stores, set up your account and you're off. The newest version of the app is a dramatic improvement over previous versions that I've dealt with, so be sure you update. It keeps track of speed traps, red light cameras and more. Connection is more stable and all around it does a good job.
The radar detector itself is very straight forward, set the mode and you're good to go. The backlit display is easy to read in any light and the reduction in false positives over my previous detector is a major improvement. As I mentioned it comes with a suction cup magnetic mount, which is an improvement over previous generations with the clip mount, however I'd still recommend a rearview mount and if your mirror supports it, the pigtail to power it from the mirror.
In testing, it appears to catch radar at an excellent distance, I haven't yet had it pick up laser, but I imagine it'll function as previous models have, since the eye needs to be hit to pick up the laser. It will be interesting to see if certain types of brake lights set it off as well, although they have not yet.
The long and short of it is this. If you're in the market for a radar detector and don't need the specific features of some of the ultra-high end and very expensive ones, this is an excellent option, providing great range, app connectivity and reduced false positives without breaking the bank.

It's like a 'stealth' smart lock
on November 10, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've owned many smart locks over the years and in general I've had positive experiences with them, but they all tend to be built in a similar method, a large inside (and sometimes outside) panel that holds the logic, the batteries and potentially a keypad that detracts from the overall look of the door. That's why when the Level Lock smart locks became available I was so interested. The Wife Acceptance Factor of a lock that doesnt LOOK like a piece of technology is a massive help in this regard.
To start, it's packaged much like you'd expect, white box with all the parts you'd need (indoor and outdoor lock parts, inside the door lock mechanism, battery, keypad and mounting hardware). The matte black color is nice although it doesnt 'quite' match the oil-rubbed bronze look that I was hoping it would do. I feel like black is a less common color in door hardware than oil rubbed bronze, but the company does not offer that as an option (they do have a satin nickel option, but it would have not matched my handle hardware).
Installation is straightforward, I would argue a bit more straightforward than many smart locks because the mechanism is fairly 'self contained' since the motor is inside the lock mechanism rather than the large indoor panel on most smart locks. The battery sits inside the deadbolt itself which while the company states it meets all security standards still makes me wonder when compared to a solid piece of metal.
A quick note on the battery, it ships with a non-rechargeable Lithium CR2 battery which is where I really dinged it for that one star. I feel like it's a miss to not ship with a rechargeable battery, especially since the battery size is so uncommon. I will be trying a rechargeable version of this battery in the door once the shipped battery dies.
Once installed, app setup and smart home integration is pretty simple. Set up your account, pair the lock, configure and test. I let my Alexa auto-detect it once the app was configured and it was easily added to the routines that I had already configured for my home.
All in all I do like the lock, it's a nice clean look which is a huge departure from the ugly indoor or outdoor panels of most other smart locks. I wish they'd been more thoughtful with the lock color as black is uncommon. But the biggest issue is the type of battery. Had it come with a rechargeable lithium battery I would have been much more impressed, particularly at this price range.

Good for what it is

Simplisafe is one of the few full security systems in a market quickly being overrun by a plethora of smart security systems. It has options for motion sensors, window sensors and even cameras which you can buy in a kit or add separately later.
For this particular kit it comes with a pair of motion sensors and 4 of the window/door sensors. For most people this may not be enough and you may want to consider adding more (at least more of the window sensors, depending on your needs).
Setup is extremely straightforward. Install the app, create your account, place the base station (somewhere central), secure the keypad and place the sensors. They come with adhesive, however I'd just as soon recommend screwing them in place to ensure stability. Setup does require you to turn on a monitoring package, and while it's not terribly expensive, if you do not choose to continue the monitoring package after the initial trial, you will be severely limited in regards to what the system can do. If you want security without a package, there are better options than Simplisafe.
Now as for the functionality. The motion sensors have good range, they picked up motion across large rooms without any issue. There were no false alerts or false opens with the door and window sensors. I do not know how the battery life will be as it is only newly installed. However in general this functions very similarly to many of the big name professionally monitored home security vendors without the cost of them having to set it up for you, and often times the cost of the simplisafe service is less than that of many of the suppliers out there.
It's a great option if you know what exactly you're getting and intend to use it as you might one of the larger vended security options without some of that hassle. I'd recommend more sensors and potentially a few cameras if that's what you're looking for.
All in all, it's a good security system, competes with the big boys in the right places, but if you want a free monitoring option, this one isn't really for you.

In a word. Perfection.
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I have a fair amount of experience with drones, I've owned a few over the years, and each one is progressively better than the last. But I have to say, this is by far the best I've used. The quality, construction, image capabilities, range, object avoidance, all of it, is amazing.
To start, it's packaged well, if relatively plainly in a white shrink wrapped box. It's nothing to write home about but it gets the job done. This drone, like all of DJI's drones, has the 'wings' folded in to allow for room for the batteries and controller.
Once out, it's a simple matter of charging the batteries and you're basically on your way. The fact that this controller has a built in screen rather than needing to rely on your phone to use it is a HUGE bonus. The screen is beautiful, bright and easy to see in most light. The image quality remains crisp even MILES (KMs) away from the controller. The range is incredible, although it's important to note that FAA guidelines prohibit flying beyond your ability to see the drone. Don't forget to register your drone as well, it's not expensive and you get 3 years off of a single registration.
While flying there are a few modes you can put the drone in, specifically performance modes and normal flying. If in performance mode it disables the object avoidance sensors, so it's important to watch where you're flying. In normal flying modes it has object detection all around and will stop itself from running into things like trees. It's a very useful feature. It's a huge upgrade from my previous drone that really only had frontal object detection.
Now for what most people care about... The camera. Amazing. It's really all I can say. I've attached pictures taken with the camera of my neighborhood and some locations within it as well as the neighboring lake. Videos are incredible, the image stabilization is next level. The colors and zoom capabilities are great, you'll see examples of both in the attached images. Having the ability to fly for 43 minutes makes it so you have nearly an hour of freedom to do everything you want at the ranges you want.
Bottom line, if you're in the market for a drone that can really do it all, for fun, for pictures, really for everything, this is the right answer.

Such a great little device
on October 7, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
With so many new gadgets in the baby arena these days, it's hard to stand out. Many baby accessories and monitoring devices go to the nth degree to make you feel like you have extra information or control over keeping an eye on things, but in general, nothing compares with just seeing that your baby is doing well with your own eyes.
The VTech does just that, and well. Setup is easy, although a quick note here, make sure you get it on the WiFi and let it update the software, there's some improvements to the new software that make it work infinitely better, so be sure to get that done.
Like I said, setup is easy, the video quality is great, and really I can't complain. With the audio and video making it easy to keep an eye on the little one, it's hard to find fault. Both the audio and video quality are great, the ability to connect with the phone is an added bonus so you don't have to ONLY use the included video monitor.
There's not a whole lot else to say, it does its job and does it well, I'd heartily recommend it for anyone looking to keep an eye on the baby.

A Wheel for those who have issues with Wheels
on October 2, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
So there's a thing about me, I love racing games. I've currently got at least 6 installed on my machine and I own 28 on Steam, having played through most or all of them. They range from true racing games like Project Cars to more fantastical stuff like Rocket League or GRIP. The issue I've always had is racing wheels. I love the idea of them, I love how they feel and the idea that it could create a more immersive driving experience, but something about them for me never translates from real life to the screen in the way I would think they would. Maybe I don't know enough about them or how to adjust them properly, I know many of these racing games allow modification of the sensitivity, but to me it always feels like it's nothing close to the real world, and punching a D-pad or Analog stick loses a lot of the sensitivity you'd expect out of a wheel.
For me, this is where this controller truly excels. With this ability to have a wheel that I can control with my hand and a flick of the wrist or with my thumb guiding the edge, I've suddenly gained in a very handheld format, the control I lose by switching to a controller, more than that, this is entirely portable, whereas most racing wheels are not.
I have to say, I love this thing, the ability to put the wheel where it is most comfortable and for this to be a modular design really lends itself to, I would say, an entire group of gamers that for some reason cant particularly utilize a standard racing wheel for many reasons. For me, I placed the wheel in the lower left modular slot, giving my left thumb clear access to it and it's really been something else to use. When making turns in Asphalt 9, I'm getting a sense of control that using a plain controller just never lent me. It translates well across games as well, whether Project Cars III or Burnout, or even Rocket League, there's just a great amount of function that this lends itself to.
All in all, if you are a racing game fan, whether Forza or Project Cars or many others, and find yourself in a situation where a standard racing wheel just doesn't work for you, or you want something that is more portable, this is the answer. I heartily recommend it.

In a word... Beautiful.
on September 26, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I haven't ever owned a curved monitor, so stepping into this type of display with this monitor was a wholly new experience for me as I'd never understood the hype. Suffice to say, I get it now. The monitor is gorgeous. Out of the box the color reproduction seems to stand a cut above the rest, the curvature is a delight to look at, and the high refresh rate of 240Hz results in smooth visuals that are basically incomparable... So let me get a little more specific.
Packaging is about like any monitor, it comes in a large (larger than you'd expect because of the curve) cardboard box, inside is the manual, 2 cables for connectivity (1x HDMI and 1x DisplayPort) and the power brick. It's important to note that this monitor uses a power brick instead of the standard AC power cable that most monitors have used in the past.
Setting it up is a breeze, just screw on the base, the monitor is fully articulate, moving up and down on the stand as well as swiveling and tilting, really no issues with anything here. It's worth noting that the Displayport capability of the monitor is DP 1.2, however this is sufficient to fully drive the 1080p at 240Hz capabilities of this monitor.
Now for the fun part...
I loaded up Forza, I've played COD, I've uncapped the framerate on Diablo IV, you name it, I've done it... The visuals are a cut above, the curve gives an interesting "all the same distance from my eyes" feel to what I'm looking at and really makes for a wonderful experience. It's Bright, it's HDR, the color reproduction is amazing, and all of this in Asus' TUF brand which is traditionally their money-saving line.
I have to say, it doesn't feel like a budget line monitor, every part of the build and every part of the experience really gives a wonderful look and feel. Would I recommend it? Absolutely.

A worthy competitor
on August 12, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
At this point every manufacturer of electronics has released a true wireless headset to varying degrees of quality and success.
Enter the soundcore Liberty 4 by Anker. Rather than going with the completely boom-free aesthetic, their headset has a short boom arm with the mic situated on the end. Wearing them is comfortable and the case is actually quite a lot of fun as well as feature filled. It is magnetically closed, the button lights up as the case and headset charges (supports type c and qi charging) and the individual bays inside the case light when the headset is inside the case. Pushing the button pops open the case on a spring. It's become almost my new fidget toy.
When using the headset, the quality is great and as mentioned they are comfortable to wear. The people I call initially had some audio quality concerns but after a firmware update there has been no further mention of audio quality issues.
These have become my new daily use headset for my phone for audio, video and calls and I heartily recommend it to anyone in the market.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Convert your digital pictures into analog prints using this Polaroid Lab. The I-Type and 600 series film let you print photos instantly while the built-in LiIon battery is long-lasting and rechargeable via USB. This Polaroid Lab is compatible with iPhones operating with iOS 11 or newer and Android 7 and above.

What size is the actual photo that is printed? And can multiple phones be used on it?

The lab uses polaroid originals type-i film which is 4.2x3.5"

You can use as many phones on it as you want

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Keep your floors spotless with this Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum. Its sensors and mapping system automatically adapt to the pattern of floors in the home and effectively avoid obstacles. This Alexa-compatible Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum provides maximum cleaning coverage including edges and corners thanks to its sophisticated edge-cleaning technology.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
