An established brand and a solid security option
on August 12, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
Over the years I've had a number of different security options that each have their own benefits and drawbacks. And really there's no one size fits all even though many of the companies try to sell them that way.
My issue with night owl in the past is that most options have required a hard wired camera and in many cases it's just not easy to add wiring to a house or building. Options from other companies already have wireless cameras so night owl having a good option in this arena only makes sense.
Let's discuss setup. The system ships with 4 wireless cameras, they are WiFi but they only connect to the WiFi access point created by the base unit. The cameras themselves run on lithium 18650 batteries which is fine and good but you'll have to occasionally charge them. That being said, when I went to initially set this up, I had it in my mind that I'd charge them cameras for a bit before I went through the effort of setting it up and mounting them and all that. Well it ships with a USB cable to charge the cameras but no charging brick. I used a few i had around, but be forewarned, AS SOON AS you put the batteries in the cameras they enter a pairing mode. There's a completely unintelligible voice that screams at you that they are in pairing mode until you actually pair them to the base unit. It's one of the most annoying things I've run across in modern electronics. That said i did continue to let them charge even though the voice yelled at me for the next few hours until i had time to go through the setup for the base unit and pair the cameras to the base. Suffice to say, don't put the batteries in the cameras until you're ready to go through setup.
As for the configuration, it's extremely straightforward, you pair the base to your phone over Bluetooth, setup an account, name the cameras and you're done. You don't need to hook it to a monitor unless you just want to or if you're going to set it up without Bluetooth.
The video quality is great, the distance from the base unit is good. They are very sensitive to motion if you have that set up (that's the default setting). They can take up to 4 batteries to last as long as possible but the system ships with 2 batteries per camera. It states it can last up to 6 months on 2 batteries. I purchased 2 additional batteries per camera (lithium 18650 button top batteries) to give them more time.
All in all it's a great system, the setup is really just an irritation at best but it's very smooth. I'd easily recommend this to anyone in the market.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Silky smooth video
on August 2, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I'm sure many of you have seen the video that a lot of streamers and youtubers post while walking that seems to have little-to-no bob or weave to the video while moving. Achieving this type of video requires a device such as this called a 'Gimbal stabilizer'. It uses motors and gyroscopes to stablize the camera or phone as much as possible to prevent as much camera movement as possible.
I was apprehensive at first using a brand I was not familiar with to create such video, but I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised, but there are a few small drawbacks.
First, I'd say initially the setup is relatively straightforward, that said, some of the caveats come with this. The english version of the app has a number of chinese characters which can make it an interesting experience to navigate. Second, due to the placement of the controls and shape of the handle, sometimes you need to hit some of the buttons with another hand, which is an unfortunate thing as gimbals such as this are designed to be operated one-handedly as much as possible. There's a slight learning curve as it relates to general operation of the device, and I'd recommend spending some time determining how everything works together before going 'out in the field' to actively use it. That said, once you get the hang of it, it can be fun and extremely useful to use.
I've used this to record and stream both, allowing me mostly one-handed operation as previously stated while moving around an environment. The Gimbal does deliver on what it is designed to do, with that bit of a learning curve.
All in all, I would recommend it if this is the price range that someone is looking at, but there are better options in the higher range.

Blazing Fast Gaming All-rounder
on July 24, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
To say that gaming is what I do would be like a race car driver saying that they just like to go around the block. Gaming is in my blood, I have been gaming since I was old enough to move a mouse, furthermore I have been building gaming PCs for the majority of my life, starting in 1994 (shhh, yes I'm old).
Gaming laptops have always been an interesting breed with the attempt to strike that balance between performance and portability. Some manage to do it better than others and some don't even try, instead giving individuals the option of more of an all-encompassing desktop replacement. This device leans towards the latter, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, if you know what you're getting into.
To start, the laptop box is huge, but that's really to be expected for such a large laptop. 18" laptops are just very large, it's difficult to consider something of this size as 'portable', particularly when the power brick itself weighs something like 6 lbs all by itself. That said though, someone looking to purchase a laptop of this size is not looking for portability. They are looking for speed, for comfort in the larger screen and keyboard, and something they can potentially bring with them in rare occasions that they do decide, without sacrificing any of that performance they have come to know and love by using a laptop like this.
When removed from the box there's a separate internal box housing the laptop, which, when opened, raises the laptop to you almost like a presentation. Included in this smaller box is the laptop itself, of course, a small amount of literature, and 2 replaceable vent fan covers for aesthetic purposes. It's an interesting and unique touch, though I will say I'll likely just lose them or the originals depending on which ones I'm choosing to use.
This brings us to use. Upon bootup you're greeted with the Acer Predator icon with a bit of an 'action' style sound, and the keyboard lights up in what I would consider a very unique way, individual keys lighting and darkening across the keyboard throughout the bootup sequence. It's a very cool, very futuristic look.
Once into Windows, the setup is much like any other Windows 11 laptop, there's the general Windows setup and a small amount of Acer license acceptance. Fortunately once in Windows, the amount of bloat on the laptop is very light, just consisting of some support apps and the lighting/performance management app.
I immediately was interested in the speed of the SSD as well as that of the performance of the machine itself, and have included screenshots of ATTO Disk Bench and 3DMark. The laptop itself scores respectably, if right in the 'average' range when the power profile is set to performance. I imagine there's some things that could be done to tune it a little bit, but still, 10,383 3DMarks is nothing to scoff at and will give excellent performance across all major AAA games and I'm sure many future ones.
This leads me to the gameplay. I loaded up Diablo IV and to say it runs silky smooth is like saying cashmere is just 'soft'. The laptop really performs amazingly, the keyboard is incredibly responsive, I was able to run the game at max settings with no issues, and it's really quite a sight to behold.
So what negatives does it have? Not many, being honest. The biggest one is the all-plastic construction. I do understand that it likely saves on weight since it is such a large laptop, but it takes away from the premium feel just a little bit. For some the size might be a negative, but with the number of other gaming level laptops available at various sizes, if you chose an 18" laptop, then you should understand what you are getting in to.
All in all it's an incredible machine, capable of playing games full-throttle across the board and I heartily recommend it to anyone in the market for such a machine.

Blazing fast storage
on July 2, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I have this tendency to go all out with storage speed. From the first time I built a PC I have always had at least one RAID 0 array to load my OS and games on. On my last build I had installed 2x nVME PCIE gen 4 drives in raid 0 that netted me about 10 GBps.
To say that this single drive is fast is really an understatement. In my current build with a Ryzen 7950X3D on a fully PCIE gen 5 capable board I'm pulling well over 12 GBps with this single drive. For one drive to function at a higher speed than two drives were needed to achieve before really shows the generational gains that are capable.
Admittedly in real world results there's going to be little noticed in terms of difference in speed, but if it are using speed intensive and sensitive applications, you could very well benefit.
In my current gaming system I've been playing Diablo IV quite a lot and it has a fair number of loading screens between traveling waypoints and entering dungeons. Over my previous build I can definitely feel how quick I'm loading each time.
If you are in the market for some of the fastest storage available, this should be on your list. I greatly recommend it.

Master of all

You know, these days it's rare to find a product that is so well thought out that it covers all the bases. You'd not usually lump a surge protector into the "well thought out category" but here we are.
The revolve45 is exactly that. It's compact, it has rotating plugs so bricks and such don't interfere with each other, it has both USB-A and USB-C (because, face it, we all have many many USB-A to whatever cords still lying around the we use frequently that a device with only USB-C would only be partially useful) and it has power delivery. Seriously, what more could you want?
If I HAD to pick a downside, it would be nice if the total device power for the USB was something a little higher, such as 60 or 90 watts, but I think it's nitpicky plus that would likely make it much more expensive as bricks that supply that kind of power already cost a lot.
It's quickly become my bedside surge protector just because it has all the power connectivity I need for my plethora of devices, but it could easily go in an office or kitchen or anywhere.
I heartily recommend this to anyone in the market for a multi use surge protector

In a word... Amazing...
on June 7, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
When it comes to baby bottles, it doesn't seem like much has changed in decades. Sure there's different shapes and nipples and ways to prevent colic and other things, but the idea of the bottle is very much the same today as it has been for many years. It's hard to innovate on a product like this.
That's what is so interesting about the Ember system. Without fail everyone needs to transport milk, heat or cool it, and just have it be easy without cleaning being a hassle, warming being a hassle, anything being a hassle, because it's already so much work just being a new mom. This is where this helps...
To start, the packaging is super nice, everything is well packaged in an unassuming white box that doesn't need to be more than it is.
It comes with 2 bottles, an insulated top, a warming bottom, some nipples and the power cord. It doesn't seem like much although it does have adapters that work with Dr Brown's nipples and Philips Avent nipples, so that helps a bit.
Setup is easy, thankfully. The app allows you to do things like track amount of milk drank, baby weight, even warm the bottle from another room if needed. The milk does not get 'hot', which I've found is a challenge with some bottle warmers, that it can get too hot, this comes nicely to body temp an keeps it there. It's very straightforward and easy to use.
Cleanup is simple, there's not tons of pieces, everything is dishwasher top-rack safe, and really what it comes down to is what I've already mentioned about ease... There's just nothing complicated here and it's really a delight. When pumps need a rocket scientist to take them apart, clean them and put them back together, having something as simple as this that just 'works' is a breath of fresh air.
All in all this thing is amazing. It's easy to use and I'd happily recommend it.

Useful but underpowered
on June 5, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
Let's start by saying I love the idea of USB ports integrated with wall outlets, they've become as synonymous with charging and powering of small electronics as a standard wall outlet has with powering normal household devices, so having the two in a single place without taking up more space seems like a perfect idea to me.
The Insignia wall outlet with USB ports answers that exact question, although with a couple of minor caveats, which I'll get to in a moment.
To start, it's packaged in an unassuming blue and white box, nothing special here and it really doesn't need to be. The box contains the two outlets and two small pieces of literature with specifications and installation information, nothing more. The faceplates are integrated with the outlet, which is fine, they can be removed, but they are slightly nonstandard and blocky, so they will not match other outlets in most houses out of the box.
As for the outlets themselves, they do not have that piece you can break off to make it so that one outlet can be controlled by a switch while the other is not. These are of the type that have a single hot connection and a single neutral connection (with a ground, of course).
Really the biggest downside is the fact that the USB ports have a combined total amperage of 3.6A which to me seems rather low, especially for something that is supplied directly from in-home wiring. They do not have power delivery or any quick charge-like features, which could make them much slower to charge many devices than other standard plug-in devices, I find this to be a fairly large disappointment. Especially once you consider that when both are plugged in, they max out at 1.8A each, which is less than a normal USB phone charger for most modern phones (which tend to be around 2.4A). It's also a miss that at least one of the ports isn't type-c.
All-in-all I think it's a nice step in the right direction making USB plugs available in standard home receptacles, and I hope future iterations of the product advance the technology that much more.

Good little speaker
on May 24, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
Bluetooth speakers are a dime a dozen these days, it's difficult to make one that truly stands out, particularly since they can be had so cheaply. I will admit I had high hopes for this one and it mostly delivered.
To start, it's packaged in a small unassuming box with two small pieces of literature and the speaker itself shrouded in a cloth bag, which is a nice touch.
Upon powering it up and putting it in pairing mode, I opened the bluetooth settings on my Galaxy S21 Ultra and was actually greeted with a message from the speaker asking to be paired, rather than having to select the device and connect it myself. I found this to be a rather nice experience when setting up the device. It left very little to be confusing about and it just 'worked'.
Once connected I loaded up Amazon music and listened to a few different songs. The speaker is small so you cant really expect room-filling music, but with that being said it does get quite loud, and the open slots on the bottom are for the down-firing mini-subwoofer to move some air, which is definitely cool as it shows there was some thought put into the design. Where it falls just a TINY bit short (no pun intended) is the balance of the mids and highs. When playing Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin, I found the higher notes to get a little muddy when played with a lot of lows and mids. However, when highs are played a little more exclusively, like some of the higher vocal tones in Bohemian Rhapsody, I found the experience to be far more pleasant.
All in all it is a good little speaker, if not incredible, but if you're in the market there are a number of things done correctly here, including the setup experience and that downfiring subwoofer. Worth your consideration.

Amazing Monitor
on May 11, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I won't lie, I've had my fair share of monitors of the years, everything from the bottom of the barrel basic ones to fairly decent higher end monitors. I've used TVs as monitors, I've basically run the gambit on all things monitor. It's rare that one impresses me.
Enter the Omen 27qs... And Wow.
Unboxing is like most monitors so I won't go into much here. Includes power and a DP cable, some literature and that's about it. But that's not what we're here for.
Setup is easy, as any monitor should be, plug it in and go. I connected it via DisplayPort to my RTX 3090 and fired up the NVidia control panel to ramp that refresh rate and turn on GSYNC. Zero issues, everything is recognized and synchronized without problems.
Loading up Overwatch I maxed out the refresh rate because why not, everything runs buttery smooth, I would say this is easily the smoothest image I've experienced in a monitor and that's saying quite a lot. Next up was Apex Legends, again, silky smooth, nary a blip or anything to be concerned about.
The specs of the monitor are great, boasting VESA HDR400, 99% sRGB color gamut, and 240Hz refresh rate sporting both GSYNC and AMD Freesync. There's basically nothing to complain about.
All in all it's a great gaming monitor, and I mean that. If you're in the market for one, this is a strong contender.

Nice laptop with a few oddities
on May 10, 2023
Posted by: Beradon
I've had more than a few laptops over the years, although I tend to require something with a bit more power, which oftentimes sacrifices portability to achieve that. It's rare to come across a device that has both power and portability without completely breaking the bank. That's where the HP Dragonfly Pro comes in.
To start, the unboxing experience is a premium one, the laptop itself is in a very nice high quality white box, not just your average brown laptop box or even a lidded brown or black HP box as many come, but a glossy white box. Upon opening it, the laptop and charger are sheathed in a semi-opaque paper sheath with a nice look and feel to it. The first thing you will notice, however, when removing the laptop from the box is that it's fairly hefty for a 14" laptop. This was a bit of a surprise as usually laptops in this range are thin and light, more in a moment. The laptop is also a bit thicker than you'd expect in this day and age. The charger itself is a 96w USB-C brick that's relatively small for what it is and the USB-C cable is braided and high quality.
Setup is very straightforward, with very little in the way of extras from HP outside of the warranty acceptance, and almost no bloat. In fact the only HP software I see is the support center which has the normal things, including warranty checking and configuration and use of some custom buttons, as well as access to live support if needed.
And that's one of the selling points of this laptop. On the right side of the keyboard there are 4 buttons that don't usually exist on a traditional keyboard that give access to some of the extra support features of the laptop. Three of the buttons are preconfigured for access to that support or configuration, and the fourth button is customizable. I have to say that the placement of the buttons on an already narrow keyboard since this is just a 14" laptop is a little awkward. I keep finding my fingers not quite striking the correct keys due to this. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but for now it's a little annoying. I also wish that all 4 of the buttons were programable, because I just cannot see myself contacting support enough to need a dedicated button. Outside of this odd button use and placement, the keyboard itself is actually fairly decent to type on for a small laptop keyboard. The backlight is nice, though seems to need to be manually enabled with each boot, which is annoying.
When it comes to performance, the built in drive is a Phison 512GB PCI-E 4.0 drive. The performance is average, with maximum reads coming in a little over 6GB/s and writes about half of that, I've attached a screenshot. This is not a gaming laptop, but I've run 3DMark Timespy and 3DMark CPU Mark against it just for some baseline numbers. It does have a Ryzen 7736U processor with integrated graphics, and while I said this isn't a gaming laptop, the capabilities of Ryzen integrated graphics are shockingly good for what they are. 3DMark benchmark screenshots are included. In running the benchmarks the fan definitely kicked on as expected, but honestly that's the only time I've done anything with this that stressed it enough for me to even hear the fan.
The laptop is definitely sold to the professional as it doesn't have those gaming capabilities, but the strong Ryzen 7,m 16GB of ram and quick hard drive support those functions well. It has a touchscreen monitor if you find you need it, though I don't ever feel the need to use it. On the note of the touchscreen, it is actually a beautiful monitor, looks great and has good resolution at 1920x1200. The battery life is good, although with the weight of the device, it's less portable than it should be.
Bottom line, the laptop is very nice, has a number of great things about it, good performance, great battery life and a wonderful screen. But the weird additions of the dedicated support buttons and the strangely hefty proportions are detriments.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Convert your digital pictures into analog prints using this Polaroid Lab. The I-Type and 600 series film let you print photos instantly while the built-in LiIon battery is long-lasting and rechargeable via USB. This Polaroid Lab is compatible with iPhones operating with iOS 11 or newer and Android 7 and above.

What size is the actual photo that is printed? And can multiple phones be used on it?

The lab uses polaroid originals type-i film which is 4.2x3.5"

You can use as many phones on it as you want

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Keep your floors spotless with this Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum. Its sensors and mapping system automatically adapt to the pattern of floors in the home and effectively avoid obstacles. This Alexa-compatible Samsung POWERbot Slim robot vacuum provides maximum cleaning coverage including edges and corners thanks to its sophisticated edge-cleaning technology.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
