TP-Link Keeps You In Control
on July 18, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
I've had a number of different routers and mesh systems recently. I have to say that the vast majority of them not only disappoint, but have taken the power of the device away from the user. I get that in many cases it's an effort to make it easier for more individuals to set up the devices, but what about those of us who are a bit more tech savvy, those of us who want more control and more power in our devices. That's where TP-Link shines.
To start, the router is packaged well, if in a no frills box that protects it and doesn't do much more. That's fine in my opinion, I'm not looking for a pretty box, I'm looking for a functional and powerful device and that's where TP-Link delivers.
When configuring the device it quickly steps you through the basic items, type of internet connection, WiFi name, password setup, etc. Once you complete the setup, you're presented with more of a classic interface for routers with many advanced options including VPN server and client options (the VPN client configuration is new in recent firmware for home use routers from TP-Link, and a welcome addition).
With the capability to control everything from your subnet to DHCP scope, dynamic DNS, VPN, even cloud connectivity, as well as the ability to mesh other TP-Link devices together, there's really no lack of configuration options in the device and the flexibility to do with it what you want.
For me, all of this was a welcome thing to see as, like I previously mentioned, many recent devices I've used take the power away from the user. In a recent router I've owned, there wasn't any method to see the error logs or even update the firmware yourself. All other advanced options I just mentioned were entirely absent in the other device.
Now for the performance. It's definitely no slouch. I was able to utilize the full speed of my 500 mbps cable connection without issues. The range of the device covers my 2600 sqft house without issue with range to spare. I've connected the VPN client in this device to the VPN server in a different TP-Link router to give me access to another family member's network. All in all, it really does keep the control in my hands, where I want it. I happily recommend this router to anyone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A worthy entry in the world of smart thermostats
on July 8, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
Over the years I've owned a few different smart thermostats and with various moves, I've ended up leaving them at previous residences, only to land at my new home without the features and functions that I had grown to love from my previous smart thermostats.
The Emerson Sensi allows for me to regain all of those functions in an extremely sleek and functional form factor that does not skimp on quality or remote access.
The installation goes much as you would expect of any smart thermostat these days; you remove the backplate, screw it into the wall, and run the wires into the appropriate terminals in the backplate. It is powered by the C-wire from the furnace, which makes this a requirement of the install. Once this is completed, simply snap the thermostat in place and go through the setup.
As far as setup goes, again it's quite straightforward, the app is easy to use and can control multiple thermostats (which is important to me as I have a multi-zone system, so I'll need to install 2 more of these eventually). The scheduling is convenient, and it has the capability of geofencing so if you're away from your home for extended periods you can have the thermostat drop into a mode that could potentially save you more energy.
I really love the aesthetic of the device though, the screen is easy to use and read, looks sleek and modern and really gives an upscale view to something a lot of people dont think about.
Overall this is a great and needed addition to my HVAC system and I'd easily recommend it to anyone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Quick to install, lots of coverage, minimal hassle
on July 4, 2022

Over the years I've had various antivirus programs based on whatever the deal is running at the time. In many cases it's possible to get an Antivirus program for free or cheap based on current rounds of rebates, and without going with no-name options, I've tended to do very well in that regard. For the last few years I've been using a specific antivirus that has recently increased the amount of nagging they give to the user in terms of upgrades for other services and renewals for their own AV. I find this not only annoying but insulting for an application that you've paid for to constantly nag you with zero option to disable that nagging. When given the opportunity to move to Norton, I did so without a second thought.
Norton 360 Platinum combines many of the features that the big name AVs have now, between password vaults/locks, VPNs, the antivirus itself, firewalling and many other features, it basically runs the gamut for what is expected in a premium product. Add on that it can protect 20 devices across basically every major name OS out there, and it really is one of the most complete options.
Installation is very straightforward, as you'd expect. You set up your account at Norton, login, decide if you want auto-renew, then download and install. The installation honestly could not be easier, it's a one-click deal, and while you *can* go into the installation options, there's no real need to do so.
Once it installs it recommends the standard baseline AV scan, lets you set up certain things like VPN if you desire, and you're good to go. The interface looks a lot like the AV that I'm coming from which honestly isn't terribly reassuring, but so far it hasn't nagged me incessantly about features that I dont want, or dont want to pay for. It seems to be relatively lightweight in terms of 'bloat', which was never one of Norton's strong suits, so it's good to see they've gone this direction with the product. Overall it's a streamlined and easy setup.
Usage appears to be quite unobtrusive, which I appreciate, again I havent seen much in the way of nagging from the application and I hope as time continues that this doesn't change, but for now I'm happy with it. VPN is an easy one-click setup, although probably not something I'll use a lot of as I have an existing VPN provider, but if needed, it's nice that it's there.
Bottom line is that it's not expensive to buy new, a quick and easy install, and can work on up to 20 devices. There's very little to complain about here. The fact that it doesnt nag the crap out of me makes it a win in my book. Good job Norton.

In a word... Fast.

For me, external SSDs are a bit of an oddball. They tout loads of performance, but being limited by the interface speed of USB. That said, this drive is fully capable of saturating the maximum speed of a USB SuperSpeed 10Gbps interface.
To start, the drive is packaged well in a small, unassuming box. It includes 2 different USB cables which I'm fully appreciative of (one type-c to type-c, and one type-a to type-c) which is a breath of fresh air that they dont assume one particular interface over another. This packaging, like so many others recently, appears to be made of thin cardboard and fully recyclable without having to be creative with removing plastic or clamshells or anything. It seems an odd thing to call out in a review, but I feel like this more sustainable direction that companies are headed in, particularly those the size of Samsung, are worthy of note.
Now for the drive. It's small in size, about the size of a deck of cards, but not quite as thick. The drive is covered in a rubberized exterior which is nice to the touch, although it picks up dust like crazy, which for anyone with a computer, can be a little bit of a concern as the drive will likely sit near a dusty area. The rubberized exterior also makes it difficult to brush off that dust, but honestly it does give it a nice luxurious feel. The drive itself is also heavier than expected, though not excessively so.
The performance of the drive, as I hinted at earlier, is top-notch for an external drive. When connecting via USB-C 3.2 it fully saturated the interface, I would have no issues with using this for high speed copies or backups in any situation. I believe even XBox OneX/S or PS5s would be fully capable of utilizing this drive as external storage as well, which while not as quick as the internal drives, would be plenty fast from an external perspective. I've included a screenshot of the ATTO Disk Benchmark that shows the immense speed of the drive.
All in all, this is a well made, solid performing external SSD. I heartily recommend it.

It's like virtual surround sound... but for video
on May 31, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
I've seen videos online of things like this before and have always been apprehensive about the ability for them to do what the images seem to show that they do, but was willing to give it a shot.
I've not had anything similar to this in the past but was always intrigued about the level of immersion it might offer. I was not disappointed.
I have to say, for what it does and the ability for it to feel like it's "extending" the visual area of the screen, it is quite amazing. the added depth is really impressive. It's funny that in years past back when there was Tube TVs and you would drive by a house you'd see that 'glow' from a room where the TV was on, and the shifting images would change the color and movement of that glow. This is basically that but cranked to 11.
To start, installation was really quite easy provided you have easy access to the back of your TV. The LED strips and camera stick on to the TV. I already had the Govee app installed for a different solution, so there was no effort required on my part for this, but I've always appreciated the simplicity of control of the LED strips from the Govee app.
I really think this adds an amazing level of interest and depth to the shows being watched, and gives the illusion that the TV is larger than it seems. All in all, I recommend this for some additional immersion, particularly without having to buy a significantly larger TV.

Generally small laptops are a bit of a mixed bag in terms of capability, construction and quality, all of which is somewhat sacrificed in the face of convenience of the smaller form factor while still carrying a premium price tag.
Asus with their Zenbook line has always shied away from this perception, consistently presenting a well built small form factor laptop with premium hardware and excellent battery life. So lets break it down.
When unpackaging the laptop, simply by opening the box, Asus has developed a small cardboard lift that presents the laptop to you like a gift as you raise the lid. It's a small but noticeable touch that gives you a sense of welcome to your new piece of technology. The laptop itself is shrouded in plastic and has a few stickers on it touting the quality of the display specifically due to it being an OLED. Outside of that there's a small amount of printed documentation in the box, and of course the USB-C charger hidden under a flap on the side.
When removed you're really hit by the quality of the construction, smooth to the touch with reasonable heft, though nothing obscene for the size of the machine (it's only 3 lbs). The action of the hinge for the screen is smooth as expected. One thing that is noticeable, however, is that Asus has chosen to go with a plastic shell. This was likely to save weight, so I cannot entirely fault them for the choice, the plastic they did use does not feel low quality, there's no gapping or creaking and the laptop itself has almost no flex.
On bootup, you're immediately hit by just how beautiful the screen is, vibrant and colorful, it's everything that the stickers and documentation proclaims that it is. At 14", the extremely high resolution (2880x1800) presents an image that is unparalleled, even if you have to use the scale slider in Windows 11 to make everything legible. The initial setup of Windows 11 is straightforward, with the only addition being the warranty registration from Asus themselves. The same goes for the bloat on the laptop, it's minimal, mostly consisting of warranty and update tracking software.
Moving to a discussion of the capabilities of the laptop, it is worth noting that it ships with a 12th gen i5 which while not top of the line, is appropriate for a small form factor laptop with battery life in mind, this is paired with LPDDR5 for additional capability and of course an nVME SSD. All of these components come together to give you a well performing machine. The graphics are Intel's current generation on-chip graphics but capable of a small amount of gaming should you choose to use it in this manner, but bear in mind, this is not a gaming laptop.
Applications, including Word, Excel, Photoshop and others open quickly due to the processor and SSD, however I find the 8GB of RAM to be very slightly on the anemic side in this era, but it should still be sufficient for most business and casual users.
Bottom line, this is an extremely well built laptop, with price and performance to match. There's very little being sacrificed here, and provided you understand the machine that you're buying, it's arguable that those are not really sacrifices, but intentions of the platform itself. All in all, I definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a very capable small form factor machine if you do not want to feel like you're giving up anything to have that improved mobility.

Beautiful Monitor
on May 4, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
from York, SC
Over the years I've basically run the gamut of monitors from the cheapest to some of the most expensive, large, small, TVs as monitors and everything in between.
There's a lot to be said about having a high performing monitor, though this is a place where a lot of people choose to save a few bucks in favor of another part of their PC. The strange thing about that is that the monitor is basically the window (no pun intended) into the capability of that PC. If you're gaming and you spent a lot on your processor and graphics, you wont ever really utilize that performance to its fullest without a monitor that can really utilize it. /soapbox
This monitor does all of that and more, and it does it in a thoughtful manner. The packaging is much the same as any monitor, it's clamshelled inside some foam inside a carboard box, ok nothing special there. However as soon as you remove it from the box it already starts to show where it stands out. This monitor has both HDMI and DP inputs and it comes with one of each cable. In my experience this is rare, if a monitor comes with any cables it's usually only one and you basically dont get to choose. Having both options readily available, especially with the prevalence of both interfaces on many high end graphics cards makes this a win already in my book. The arm and stand are unique solely in their look, though the arm has a hole through the middle to help with cable management which is a nice touch, and common among many monitors these days.
Connecting it is much like any other monitor, plug it in, turn it on and it basically works. With the option of one of two HDMI ports or a single display port you can plug in either or multiple as you wish depending on your needs. The HDMI ports are v1.4 which can support up to 144hz on this display, while the DP interface v1.2 supports up to the full 165hz.
While the monitor doesnt support 4k, it would have been nice to see the HDMI 2.0 spec on the HDMI ports so that it could run the full 165hz on those, but I can understand that there isn't any real need for it.
When connected, Windows recognized the ability of the monitor and I was easily able to select the appropriate refresh rate.
In gaming, what can I say... it's beautiful... AC Valhalla is silky smooth when powered by an RTX 3090 at 165hz. I routinely play WoW and while this monitor is overkill for that scenario, I can say there's definitely no issues with something like that.
All in all, it's a really well made and gorgeous monitor. I'd readily recommend this to anyone.

Flawlessly connected, Fiercely protected. Austere is moving beyond the primary function of providing power, to a place where performance, safety, and design come together to define what you should expect in power. Using our PureFiltration technology, Austere Power cleans noise and artifacts, that can travel through power lines and keeps them from impacting your devices. In addition, the Omniport USB provides rapid charge and protection for low-voltage devices. Austere also employs flameless MOV circuits and thermal protected outlets, keeping you safe from a home electrical fire. And if anything were to happen, our Component Guarantee promises to protect your equipment from damage, regardless of its value, whenever your devices are plugged into an Austere Power product. And because how it looks is as important as what it does, Austere’s proprietary aDesign philosophy elevates function through purposeful engineering and sleek design. Our surge protector power strips have a brushed aluminum housing, which creates an elegant way to power your home electronic devices. Always. Not all power is created equal. You may not know it, but your surge protectors can wear out over time. Joules–the protective layer of energy that defends your components–are finite. And when they are gone, it leaves your system completely unprotected from shock or surge. Traditional surge protectors only last a year or two so if you can’t remember when you last refreshed your home’s power, it’s likely time to do it now. And to take out the guesswork of when your Austere Power needs to be replaced, the blue protection shield icon on the Power unit will cease to illuminate once the Joules have been used. But that won’t happen for a long time because Austere Power is rated to last more than five times as long as most power products and guarantees to safeguard your system with our Component Guarantee.

Well built and provisioned surge protector
on April 28, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
from York, SC
Surge protectors these days are basically a dime a dozen, there's literally nothing about one surge protector over another that makes it worth buying in most cases. You're just looking for enough plugs and occasionally some USB if you have need of that sort of thing, and even with the USB, you tend you be limited for whatever reason to one that runs full power, or if you plug in more items, they tend to run at half power or less - something I've never really understood.
Enter the Austere V Series surge protector. Now it may seem odd to introduce a surge protector in this way, I mean, it's just a thing to plug stuff in to, why does it need pomp and circumstance, but let me tell you... I've never used a surge protector built like this one in my 20 years as an IT professional.
First, the thing is built out of metal, which sure, isn't that uncommon, but usually metal surge protectors are clunky and ugly taupe colored things that sit under your desk at work. This is a sleek powder coat finished silver and it's nice, there's no two ways about it.
The braided cable and 6 outlets oriented in such a way to each be able to handle a brick are well appointed, and honestly, while some of those surge protectors with 15 plugs on them exist, who actually uses (or safely needs) one with that many plugs. On the edge there are 5 USB ports, 2x USB-A and 3x USB-C all of which provide full power to the ports (2.4amps). As I mentioned before, this is a rarity, as usually in these types of devices, there's one full power port, which may be reduced if you plug in multiple devices to consecutive ports. Not the case here.
Honestly, if you needed to buy a surge protector that you didn't mind having on your desk, this would be the one.
Now I'll admit, this is a bit pricey, but with 5 full power USB ports plus standard plugs, it offers something that I've not seen before, and I actually spent some rather extensive time looking for this.
I heartily recommend this to anyone that needs a good looking surge protector with multiple full power USB ports that they wont mind seeing every day.

Lightweight interesting shape well performing

To say I've owned an excessive number of mice (mouses? meeces? Mice never sounds right in reference to multiple computer meeces and not the animal...) would be an understatement. I've had many from very basic to very gaming oriented.
To start, the mouse is well packaged and includes a small number of weights that can be added to the device to get it to the ideal feel that you're aiming for. To be honest, in my opinion these are extraneous and just a selling point that no one uses (and promptly loses). I've had mice with them before and they just feel like a useless accessory, in this case it's no different. I've used mice that are much too heavy, but in this regard, they just feel pointless.
In connecting the mouse, it shows up and functions as you'd expect, although I'd like to actually call out the cable and cable sleeve. Most sleeved cables tend to be rigid and hard to use, this one remains soft and moves easily, so it doesnt detract from the motion of the mouse while still protecting the cable.
The iCUE software works for managing lighting but it is relatively limited when compared to tools for other similar accessories from other manufacturers, it is also occasionally buggy and difficult to use.
The mouse itself has a sleek and open design and looks great, functions well and has great customization options in terms of keybinds and colors.
Overall this is a great wired gaming mouse.

Interesting concept, some caveats
on January 27, 2022
Posted by: Beradon
from York, SC
When considering having a baby it's always best to know when are the best times to try to conceive. This fertility kit really gives you an extensive amount of that knowledge and flexibility to be aware of where you are daily.
To start, you unwrap two of the tests and insert them in the unit and take your sample. It suggests you do this first thing in the morning (similar to a pregnancy test, which by the way, it also checks for). The unit uploads the data to the app and allows you to follow your graph of fertility. It's extremely easy to use and intuitive.
Really the only challenges we've had is this:
--Because it wants you to take the sample first thing in the morning, generally when you get up and need to use the bathroom, having to open the packaging on two tests and wait to use the facilities it seems somewhat involved... If there was a one step way to prep it, it would help. We've thought about preparing it ahead of time, like night before, but was unsure about leaving the tests exposed to the air for hours and such.
--The unit only comes with a one month supply of tests so there's an investment here if you need to track longer (which most women wanting to track in this regard will likely need it for more time).
Overall it provides much more visibility to fertility than usually is available to a woman and could really enhance the opportunity and capability to conceive provided you understand the caveats.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Multipoint connects to 2 devices at once, lets you seamlessly switch between devices, and is available as a firmware update via the Jabra Sound+ app. Also test your hearing in the Jabra Sound+ app, and tailor your music to suit your individual hearing profile. Hear your surroundings while on a call with the HearThrough technology - use left or right earbud alone with Bluetooth Mono Mode - Each offers up to 8 hours battery and 30 hours with the case.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
