The Gold Standard for Photo Editing
on February 6, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If you do any kind of photo editing beyond basic adjustments, then Adobe Lightroom (LR) and Photoshop (PS) are still the gold standards. The Photography Plan subscription gives you regular updates, and when you do the math, it's less expensive than constantly buying new versions, even at upgrade prices.
Beyond pricing, Lightroom and Photoshop have a phenomenal user-generated ecosystem of tutorials, videos, blogs, shortcuts, training, etc… unmatched by any other application. Both LR and PS have learning curves but the community support is immensely helpful. Adobe's own tutorials are ok, but it's the vast user base that shines.

Fantastic Countertop Oven
on December 19, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The DeLonghi Livenza convection oven is a great countertop appliance. It's a bit on the large size, but it replaced our el-cheapo toaster oven and dedicated toaster (since the el-cheapo did not toast well). If you're making a small meal, this oven lets you skip the big kitchen oven.
The convection setting works fast and great. I found that when using the convection fan, reduce heat by 25 degrees from the non-convection setting to compensate for the extra airflow.
I tried several baking options including, convection, non-convection and pizza. In all cases, our meals were more even than from our big kitchen oven (non-convection). The pizza function in particular is impressive. It has a mode for frozen or fresh pizza, along with options for size and crust thickness. If you’re baking fresh pizza, the oven chimes when it's time to add fresh toppings.
The toast function is slower than using a dedicated toaster, but again, the result is far more even toasting. For example, toaster waffles ran through a 5.5 minute cycle before the edges would start getting crispy.
The ovens runs quietly (including the convection fan), and its chime is sufficient without being annoying. The instructions recommend 4" of surround space, so the actual footprint for use is slightly larger than the dimensions.
Cleaning is simple as the pans, rack and crumb tray pull out easily. The pans and rack can be thrown in the dishwasher as well.
A couple of cons, however. First, the baking temperature is in 5 degree increments up to 380 degrees; then it switches to 10 degree increments up to 450 degrees (the top temp). If you need something more precise for temps above 380, you will not get it. The oven does make one exception and lets you set 425 since that's a common recipe instruction.
The second downside is the settings are reset after every cycle. For example, the default toast option is 4 slices for 4 minutes. It does not remember your last toast settings.
Overall this is a high quality appliance and a great substitute to using a standard kitchen oven for smaller meals.

Excellent Video Editing for the Home User
on December 1, 2017
Posted by: ricks

For the casual home user, Adobe Premier Elements 2018 offers a reasonable amount of video editing utility. As with most creative software, there's a bit of a learning curve. But Premier Elements includes interactive guides that help you get over that curve. If you’re simply putting together some home movies (vacations, birthdays, kids, etc…), this is more than enough to get you going.

Great Sound; Slightly Buggy
on October 28, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The Jaybird RUN has been plagued by bluetooth connectivity issues. A recent firmware update seems to have helped. I usually keep my phone in my hand or on my desk, not in my pocket or work bag which seems to be the culprit in poor connections. Those few times the phone was in my left pocket, I experienced some bluetooth issues, though they were tolerable compared to what others have reported. I would recommend them as long as you don't plan to stow your phone during use.
PROs
• Great sound. When properly inserted, tones are crisp, clear, and the bass is not feeble.
• App allows customizing and sharing sound settings with the community. This is one of the best sound customizing apps I've seen.
• Lightweight, excellent fit, though may be too large for very small ears
• Storage case allows you to recharge the buds twice before the case itself needs to be recharged.
CONs
• Background hiss is noticeable in low volume or during spoken word or quiet music
• Occasionally there are still skips and stutters between L and R buds when the phone is in my left pocket. When holding the phone as I walk or jog, they work fine.
• Left earbud doesn’t always turn on when I press power on the right (main) bud. Annoying but not a big deal, just have to power up the left separately.
OTHER
• The snug fit blocks outside noise very well. I would not wear these where it's critical to hear ambient sound, like biking on the street.
The sound quality and sound customizing app are strong enough features that I recommend trying these. As long as the way you carry your phone doesn’t cause connectivity issues, you'll be happy with them.

Pricey For What You Get
on October 21, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
These Sony WF-1000x earbuds fall slightly short for me to recommend.
PROs
• Super crisp and clean sound. You can hear every cymbal and "s"
• Barely any hiss which you get on other wireless headsets
• Lightweight
• Three different fits included for various ear sizes; these are the first earbuds that fit my wife’s smaller ears comfortably
• Sony app lets you customize sound a bit with an equalizer
• Good microphone for speaking – listener on the other end could hear me fine
• Stays put in the ear without falling out (though it's not sweatproof for working out)
CONs
• Biggest negative is bass is not deep enough, and I am not a bass-head. Even the Sony app's equalizer could not help here. With ear buds, you need a pretty snug fit for lower frequencies to resonate off your ear canal. Despite that, I never got satisfying deep notes.
• Second big negative is a short battery life, roughly 3 hours.
• I could not really tell the difference with noise cancellation on versus off, and this is a highly touted feature of this product
• No volume control – must use phone to adjust
• Can pair with only one device at a time. Other premium headsets let you quickly swap the connection with multiple devices.
• Phone calls played only in the left ear. Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I prefer voice calls to play in both ears.
In short, while the sound that's emitted is extremely clean and full of clarity, the lack of bass, battery life, and noise canceling don't justify its premium price.

It's a Clean Sweep!
on October 20, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This is my first robot vacuum and color me impressed! It's perfect for those routine maintenance cleans you get too lazy to do – just set it and forget it. Then, those days when you want a powerful upright vacuum to do the deep clean, it will be a lot faster.
PROs
• Easy to use. No programming required.
• Quiet
• Simple to clean and detangle hair
• Low profile allows it to get under furniture, beds, etc.
• Box includes magnetic strips to create boundaries if you need them.
CONs
• Misses some small sections of a room. Instructions say the vacuum will eventually cover the entire area after several cleanings. Alternatively, you can set it to spot clean specific parts.
• Related to above, the first pass repeats certain sections rather than covering new ones.
• Dust bin can be messy to empty, though this is probably true for all bagless vacuums.
The Shark ION ROBOT 750 should be on your short list.

Excellent Stick Blender Depending on Your Use
on October 17, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
After using this hand blender on smoothies and soups, I can heartily recommend it to anyone.
PROs
• Variable speed is easy to adjust by applying pressure on the finger trigger at the top of the blender
• Blade shaft is simple to attach and detach from the motor
• 300 Watts motor is powerful enough to blend smoothly
CONs
• Due to the dome design and low blade position, does not work well in shallow containers (or shallow volume of food).
• Not meant for all food types, like ice, bread, and meat. Pay attention to the warnings in the manual.
OTHER
The dome design and low blade position minimizes aeration. This is either a plus or minus depending on what you’re blending. The design creates a very smooth blend without introducing too much air. For smoothies and soups, that's a plus. But if you actually want some aeration, say for pancake batter, the pancakes may be denser than you want.

Good General Purpose Chromebook
on October 8, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
Overall this Acer Chromebook 15 is 3.5 stars. It's good for general office or school work, as long as you understand the advantages and disadvantages of a Chromebook. Assuming you do, then these are the pros and cons of this specific machine:
PROs
• Large 15” screen
• Aluminum body is high quality
• Backlit keyboard
• Long battery life lets you work all day without plugging in
• Lightweight
CONs
• Glare is pretty bad. Wear a dark shirt when working.
• Speakers sound tinny and not very loud, even at max volume
• Keyboard feel is chintzy; doesn’t match the quality of the aluminum
• Screen's black point is not deep.. Shadows drop to black and you can’t see nuances in dark colors, giving it a very contrasty image. I would not do any photo or video editing on this.
For anyone who is invested in the Google ecosystem (Android and Chrome), this will more than get the job done. It's priced higher than last year's model, but I wouldn't say it delivers phenomenal value for that additional cost. Regardless, it should be on your list to consider.

Beautiful Keyboard Short on Customization
on September 23, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
First off, I love typing on this keyboard. For my hands, it's a shorter throw than the solar powered Logitech keyboard I've been using, which I always found just a tad too long. The keys on the Craft keyboard have better distance between them and I can tell my typing speed is considerably faster. That said, I can't figure out who the target user is for such a heavy and premium priced keyboard.
The main feature of the keyboard is a large dial on the upper left, called a "crown" by Logitech. The crown is a customizable dial that lets you program various functions or keystrokes when you turn it, press it, or turn-it-while-pressing. For example, turning the dial can change volume, brightness, scroll horizontally, navigate between apps, zoom and more. Alternatively, you can assign a custom keystroke. These settings can be configured at a global level, or per app. So globally you might want the dial to navigate between apps, but when you’re in iTunes, you can have it change volume.
The real power of the dial are profiles for certain apps like (Windows only) Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and (Windows and Mac) Adobe Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, Premiere Pro CC. These profiles change the dial's function depending on the context of these apps. For example, when in Photoshop using the zoom tool, the dial will zoom in or out. But when in the brush tool, the dial changes brush size, hardness, etc… For MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, the dial can quickly change themes, fonts and more.
Although this level of functionality sounds awesome, most heavy duty Adobe users work on graphic tablets, which have more utility and customization. Likewise, power Office users generally have keyboard shortcuts memorized. And the real drawback is there's no way to create your own contextual profiles for other apps. Hopefully Logitech is working on releasing more soon.
On the positive side, almost the entire top row of function keys are programmable (though not in a contextual way). For example, a shortcut key above the number pad takes a screen shot when pressed. If you don’t take many screen shots, you can reassign it to change brightness, or launch an app, or other function.
The keyboard backlight (which can be turned off to save battery) is nice but leaks a little too much light at certain angles from underneath the keys. This causes glare unless you’re at a higher angle. I guess it's a way to keep you from bad posture :)
You can control up to 3 devices with the keyboard. I had no trouble switching back and forth between my iMac and my MacBook.
In summary, this keyboard is a dream to type on. If you’re a power user of MS Office on Windows, or a power user of some of Adobe's Creative Suite (but not Lightroom), you might be able to justify the price tag. Otherwise it's difficult to recommend this to most people.

Robust High Speed Document Scanner for Offices
on September 12, 2017
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
First caveat about this scanner is it’s for Windows only. If you have a Mac, you should install its drivers and software in a virtual machine running Windows, and it will work just fine. But it will not be recognized natively by macOS (or OS X).
Second caveat about this scanner is it is not meant for the user who occasionally scans a few docs, receipts, and business cards. This thing is a beast with exceptional scanning speed (65 ppm), high duty cycle (6,000 pages daily), and a long 3-year warranty (Epson’s warranty is 3 years, not 1 year as listed in the Best Buy description).
PROs
• Fast, double sided scanning
• Clever document catch tray that curves up (see photos). This underrated feature ensures long pages don’t fly off the tray after being scanned, while maintaining a small footprint.
• Software has plenty of settings to fine tune the scan such as resolution, quality, color and so on. It also has some unique features such as text enhancement, color dropout, and customizable thresholds to skip blank pages.
CONs
• Only supports Windows
• Only USB 2.0 connectivity – should be USB 3.0. An optional LAN interface is available.
• No wireless interface
Out of the box
The scanner is small and lightweight. Included is a CD with drivers and software, though it’s easier and better to grab the latest software from Epson’s website. Installing the driver and basic scanner app is a breeze.
Actual Use
My first test was a 2-page letter, double sided, black and white. It easily handled this small job. I tried DPI resolutions of 200, 300 and 600, and even the 200 DPI setting yields usable text. In fact, the letter was mailed to me folded in half, and at 200 DPI, the crease of the fold barely shows up. It does show up on the other two resolutions. Compared to another document scanner I have, Epson’s output on text is more accurate to the original font . That other scanner renders the text more “bold” than the original font.
As a next test case, I scanned one of those ubiquitous coupon post cards from Bed Bath and Beyond. Here, I was testing color accuracy, and while it is more accurate my other scanner, I would not use it to make faithful reproductions (for example, photographs). It’s certainly good enough for color docs, though.
My final test was a stack of 29 sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper. The stack had a mix of black and white, color, single sided, double sided, and 6 blank sides. That means the “raw” input was 29 sheets x 2 sides = 58 pages, of which 6 were blank. Scanning this set should output a 52 page PDF if it detects and skips the blanks, like my other scanner did. I left the settings on auto detect for page size and color/BW, and set it at 300 DPI. Whereas my other scanner took 62 seconds to process the stack, this Epson did it in 25 seconds! That’s a huge productivity gain if you scan frequently.
But then I noticed that my Epson output was only 51 pages, not 52 like my other scanner. At first I thought the Epson skipped a page. Finally I figured out that the skip-blank-page feature has variable thresholds. In my case, I had a low threshold so the scanner skipped a page whose body was blank but had logo in the footer (see photo with paper). So even though the page was technically not blank, it was functionally blank and the Epson skipped it – very smart.
What’s Not to Like
File naming. You cannot create a custom file name of the output on the fly. For example, you might run a job and want to save it as ABC. Then you may want to run another job and save it as XYZ. Unfortunately there is no “Save As…” option once a scan is completed. Instead, you have to specify a file naming rule before scanning. So you can tell it to name the jobs ABC plus a sequence number or date etc. You have to overwrite the rule if you want the next job to start with XYZ. Alternatively, you can rename the file directly on your PC and ignore the file naming rules altogether. Either way, it's an extra step.
Image Enhancement Options. There are some unique options to process the scan such as text enhancement (better legibility) and color dropout (e.g., ignore colored highlighter or ink marks). Unfortunately some of these enhancements are mutually exclusive—you can't use color dropout together with text enhancement, for example. The bigger issue is that these image enhancements can penalize performance. When I ran the 29 sheet stack test with text enhancement turned on, the job took 3 minutes and 14 seconds to finish versus 25 seconds without text enhancement.
Summary
If you’re in a small or medium sized office that’s Windows based and does frequent scanning, this should be on your short list. You will have to spring for the optional network adapter, however, if you can't use it on a dedicated PC.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
