Clean Smiles
on April 19, 2024
Posted by: ricks
I never knew I needed a toothbrush with an app, but this one has it. The app guides you how fast to move the brush, shows which part of your mouth to use it on, and monitors how much pressure to apply. All very useful as I discovered I was originally moving the brush head around too quickly. The app also lets you set brushing goals, and gives you brushing factoids. I didn't find the goals or factoids useful. You can use the toothbrush without the app as well.
A manual toothbrush is no match for this. The Sonicare leaves my mouth feeling cleaner, especially in the back side of my mouth where there’s little room to actively move a manual brush.
It’s harder to compare, however, whether this is significantly better or not than rotating head electric brushes. One of the touted benefits is that sonic technology forces liquid in between teeth, thereby reducing plaque better. Search hard enough on the web and you’ll find conflicting conclusions on this claim. All of them, however, do a good job on gingivitis.
I also have a Sonicare that’s not a DiamondClean series like this one. It seems to take a little more effort to get my teeth as clean as the DiamondClean, even when using the same head.
Other features may help you decide if this is the right brush for you:
- Sonic technology is quieter than a rotating brush head. I had dropped my previous Sonicare brush and something internal came loose. Though the brush still worked, it rattled and annoyed me to no end. I was very glad to get this replacement.
- The brush head is in a long form and designed to brush by following the gum lines. I like that better than needing to pay attention to each tooth individually.
- I like using the app because it makes sure I’ve properly cleaned each section of my mouth. It also warns me if I’m applying too much pressure.
- The box comes with a travel case and a glass cup. The cup can hold your toothbrush on your countertop, and allows the charger to charge your brush.

Frame Your Music
on April 19, 2024
Posted by: ricks
The Samsung Music Frame is an extension of Samsung’s Frame line that started with their TVs. It is technology with an art aesthetic. Unlike the Frame TV, however, the Music Frame speaker has no digital display. Instead, the speaker is fronted by an old school 13.8” square frame matte to showcase art prints. Some people may prefer a digital display, but I rather like the analog feel that blends in with a photo wall or mantle.
The Music Frame is best suited to work with Samsung TVs. You could use it as a Bluetooth speaker with any device, but you’d be paying a premium for features you’ll never use.
- The included artwork can be swapped, including the ability to use your own photo. Note that if using the existing matte, the photo has to be 8”x10”, though only a 7 3/8” centered square shows through the matte cutout.
- There’s no remote so you’ll need the Samsung SmartThings app on your phone to setup and customize. I have never liked using the SmartThings app with other Samsung devices and I still don’t like it for the Music Frame. It’s sluggish and clunky, though it did make the setup a breeze.
- If you have a Samsung TV from 2017 or later, you can have its sound output via wifi to the Music Frame. This works perfectly for us as a way to place a speaker closer to the kitchen from the dining room TV without needing to blast the soundbar connected to the TV. I was pleasantly surprised that there was absolutely no lag so that mouths sync’ed with the dialogue.
- You can also connect to the Music Frame by Bluetooth, Airplay, or optical cable. And if you have a Samsung TV with Q-Symphony, you can simultaneously play sound through the TV as well as the Music Frame.
- The power, volume and mic on/off buttons are placed on the lower right of the frame angled towards the back so that it can’t be seen when looking at the frame. Though only four buttons, they are black-on-black and difficult to see without using direct light.
- The sound is excellent, though you can’t expect it to compete against a sound bar & subwoofer. But it is crisp, especially for TV dialogue.
- Alexa is built-in.
- The frame can be rested on its built-in stand on a flat surface, or optionally mounted on a wall with the included screws and anchors.
I give this 4.5 stars overall, knocking off half a star because of the need for the SmartThings app.

Nice Upgrade
on March 20, 2024
Posted by: ricks
The Logitech MX Brio Ultra HD 4K is Logitech’s newest webcam for home office and streamers. It’s the latest version of the popular Brio 4K which I’ve been using for a few years.
- The mount makes it easy to rotate the camera left and right, as well as swivel up and down. This is a huge improvement over the previous version Brio 4K. The magnetic mount is also easily removed so you can attach the camera to a tripod. The prior Brio 4K also could be attached to a tripod, but it was so unobvious that many people were not aware of that feature.
- The prior Brio 4K web cam had an image that was overly warm, brightened and lacked detail. This updated MX Brio 4K does a much more accurate job rendering the image and showing some contrast. That’s nice but it also means you’ll want to adjust the image settings, as the default is harsh with HDR active. HDR is horrible for most people, so you’ll want to turn that off.
- Speaking of settings, the MX Brio 4K has more settings that can be adjusted than the Brio 4K. To change settings, you can use either the Logi G Hub or Logitech Options+ software, both are free.
- The microphone is better than the older Brio 4K by far. But, if your space allows, you should use a dedicated mic like the Logitech Blue Yeti close to your mouth for the best sound.
- A thick USB-C to USB-C cable is included.
- Privacy shutter: a simple twist of an outer ring on the lens will put a physical curtain on the lens.
- Show Mode. When you swivel your camera down to show your keyboard, desktop, etc…, this mode will automatically flip the image so that viewers don’t see it upside down. If you plan to use Show Mode, you’ll want to also use the adhesive on the mount so that swiveling it down does not cause it do dislodge from your computer.
- Low light: the larger sensor of the MX Brio 4K is a huge step up for low light environments. Far less noise and better colors than the Brio 4K.
The low light and microphone capabilities are the big step ups from the older model. If those are not important features, then your old Brio 4K is perfectly fine to keep. Otherwise, the MX Brio 4K is a nice upgrade.

Competitive Earbuds
on January 27, 2024
Posted by: ricks
The JLAB Epic Lab wireless earbuds are a step up for a brand that’s not necessarily known for high end products. But they’ve done a great job packing some features that make these earbuds a good value.
First off, like all earbuds, you have to insert these enough to get a good seal to fully appreciate the sound. Then the question is how comfortable they are when tightly sealed in your ears. JLAB includes 2 styles of ear tips (silicone and cloud) in 3 sizes each. The silicone ear tips were the more comfortable for me.
PROs
- Sound: I’m no audiophile but the sound are excellent once the earbuds are inserted properly with the proper fitting ear tips. If you’re a bass head, they may not reach the level of throbbing low beats you want, but I thought they sounded just fine across a variety of music genres.
- Low profile: They don’t stick out much and don’t weigh much. Makes it easy to wear them for as long as you need.
- Multi-point functionality: I wish all earbuds and headphones had this feature. It allows you to connect to two devices simultaneously via Bluetooth (though play from one at a time).
- Dongle: Perhaps the most innovative feature of these earbuds is the included USB-C dongle. When inserted into a phone or computer, the earbuds automatically connect to the dongle, disconnecting any Bluetooth connections. This eliminates having to go through a Bluetooth pairing process when switching among devices. Most devices will recognize the connection as if it were a wired headset, giving you the highest quality output.
- The earbuds support Bluetooth LE Audio and the LC3 codec which enables the same if not higher quality sound than standard Bluetooth with the SBC codec. And it does this with lower battery consumption. Not many phones output Bluetooth LE Audio yet, but you can get over 50 hours of playtime with it on these earbuds.
- Spatial Audio: If your device supports spatial audio like Dolby Atmos, these earbuds will support sound spatialization.
- Smart ANC: The auto noise canceling adapts to your surroundings so you don’t have to toggle settings for quiet versus noisy environments.
CONs
- Tricky to remove from case: The earbuds are clumsy to remove from the case with their slick surface. And the dongle reduces “grabability” space as well. They need more grip.
- Dongle makes it simple to connect without having to go thru Bluetooth pairings. But you lose multi-point connectivity when using the dongle.
- The app is annoying to use. It announces all button presses. So when you’re changing the EQ, for example, it announces whichever preset you’ve pressed. There’s no setting to turn off announcements. The EQ setting can only be changed while you’re playing media. If there’s no sound being played, the EQ cannot be altered. Perhaps this is a failsafe so you don’t unknowingly change the EQ, but I can’t imagine a lot of people asked for this feature.
Overall I give these 4.5 stars. Excellent sound and battery life, but the app and non-easy removal from the case make me reduce a half star.

Didn't meet expectations
on November 25, 2023
Posted by: ricks
Overall it’s hard for me to recommend this as there other robot vacuums on the market with more up to date features at a similar or lower price point.
- Unboxing and setup required taking out the vacuum before the charging station. A couple of the smaller boxes weren't labeled to know what was inside each.
- Mapping function: The very first time the mapping function stopped after only a couple of rooms without any indication as to why and even with plenty of battery charge still remaining. After placing the unit in another room and restarting the mapping function, it did a great job mapping the entire floor, including the rooms from the first attempt. It looks like additional maps can be added, for example to map a different floor, but I didn't try this and I would expect that the charging station would need to be moved to each floor.
- Vacuum function: The unit is quite loud when it vacuums, but the cleaning power is fairly weak and disappointing, especially with edge cleaning, as it missed picking up hair and dust in several spots in the main area and along edges.
- The corner brush would spin infrequently, so it's not clear what the unit uses the brush for.
- Using the 2-pass (maximum) cleaning for a specific room didn't make a difference with the cleaning outcome, even though it seemed like the unit took more than 2 passes.
- On the plus side, the product did a good job maneuvering around furniture, chairs, wires and other objects, such as support wedges under the bed.
- Mopping function: Setting the unit up for mopping is quite easy by simply swapping the bins. But mopping is also disappointingly weak with this model as it does a very light duty mopping of the area that's done by basically dragging a wet pad across the floor. It's supposed to vacuum and mop with the mop bin attached, so I expected that it will go to the base and self-empty the dirt that it collected but it didn't, and the bin had to be emptied manually.
- iRobot app/software: The app is quite good as it's easy to use for making changes to room labels & dividers, adding cleaning, keep-out and no-mop zones, scheduling cleaning, favorite and on-demand jobs. But, the Product Health function didn't work as it would just give a pop-up message that it will be available shortly.
- Docking/self-empty station: The station is nice aesthetically and compact. The unit was able to return for redocking, except a couple of times the unit seemed to get lost or confused of its location when it started a job. One thing that happened is that a no-mop zone blocked the unit from going back to the charging base, but instead of announcing it needs help, it kept trying to return endlessly going back and forth from one side and then another.
- The self-emptying process is quite loud (just below 90dB)!

Clever Anti-slip Mount
on November 17, 2023

When Apple finally got on the magnetic charging bandwagon, they didn’t just add a circular magnetic charging loop. Instead, they also added a vertical linear magnet under the loop. While this smartly gives a little more surface to charge, it also adds the benefit of magnetically keeping your phone from rotating when connected to the charger. However, it does nothing for keeping attached accessories like wallets from slipping vertically.
Enter Speck’s ClickLock. Speck cleverly takes Apple’s implementation one step further by including a small indentation in magnetic area of the case. This indent can be mated with a Speck accessory with ClickLock. ClickLock accessories have a bolt that extends into the case’s indentation and securely keeps it from sliding in any direction. It’s an aptly named feature: when a compatible accessory is attached, it makes a click sound, ensuring it’s locked in place.
This wallet is ClickLock enabled, but will also magnetically hold to any MagSafe case, not just Speck’s. But you won’t get the benefit of ClickLock on non-Speck cases. Like many other wallets, it holds 3 cards. I find 3 cards a little tight to remove quickly, but it’s manageable. I don’t see myself using this daily as my real wallet also holds other just-in-case cards like insurance, AAA, etc… But it’s handy for traveling light on hikes, poolside and other such jaunts.

Enter Speck’s ClickLock. Speck cleverly takes Apple’s implementation one step further by including a small indentation in magnetic area of the case. The case itself is quite sturdy and gives confidence of its protective ability. This case is clear, but other colors are available.
Speck says that it can withstand a 13 foot drop. That’s a good thing because initially the case is so slippery, it will drop out of your hand at some point. Over time, the slipperiness gets less, but you still have to take care, especially compared to soft shell cases which are grippier (though less protective). Ideally Speck would have had a ridged edge to add some grip.

Great sound, great value
on November 9, 2023
Posted by: ricks
The first thing I noticed when I put this headset on was how tight they fit. The second thing I noticed was how great they sound. I was immediately impressed by the clarity of vocals without any tinniness. Yet you can still hear lows and highs that are often strangled when vocal ranges are emphasized.
Positives
- Excellent sound, vocals are especially clear.
- Callers can hear me just fine, even outdoors.
- USB-C connection can be used for charging as well as for wired listening. The included cable, however, is a USB-C to USB-A and would have been better if it were USB-C to USB-C.
- With the optional app, you can adjust the equalizer across 5 bands, which is nothing special. But the equalizer does show how many dBs you’re adjusting per band, which is nice for advanced stats.
- The app’s equalizer has the usual presets for rock, classical, etc… Or you can create your own. There is even a quick toggle specifically for listening to podcasts.
- Noise cancellation is decent though it seems most of the noise reduction is due to the tight fit rather than the ANC tech itself.
Negatives
- Fits very tight, probably to form a good seal. It borders on uncomfortable for me, an average sized guy who wears glasses. They are, however, very lightweight.
- There’s an LED that flashes when you turn the headphones off or on, but the light does not stay on when the headphone is on. That means you can’t tell at a glance if it’s on or off. There is an auto-off setting in the app in case you’re worried about using up the battery.
- Turning on the Bass Boost in the app really muddies the sound so I would leave that off.
- No carrying case, not even a simple cloth bag to prevent scratching.
Overall I give these 4.5 stars for their excellent sound and value. The fit is tight but I am getting used to them.

Disappointing
on November 5, 2023
Posted by: ricks
I had high hopes for this Bella Pro 6-Slice air fryer toaster oven and rotisserie. It is compact, lightweight, and packs a lot of features – eliminating the need for multiple small appliances.
On the positives, the features work as advertised. The toaster oven toasts, air fries, bakes, etc well. Food is cooked thoroughly and evenly.
But there are too many negatives for me to recommend this appliance.
- First and foremost, it runs incredibly hot. The oven has practically no insulation or effective cooling fan. When running, it will warm up not only the food, but also the rest of the kitchen. I would not let children come near it when it’s operating.
- Second and related, not only is the cooling fan ineffective, it starts as soon as a function is engaged and runs continuously until the oven is unplugged. I would have expected the fan to stop once the oven was cool, but it does not seem to be tied to any kind of temperature sensor. Even when I ran the oven for a few seconds which is not enough time to start warming it up, the fan started and would not turn off. Irritatingly, the instructions do not make note of this fan behavior so you’re left wondering if something is defective.
- Third, there is no interior light. For a “Pro” series, this seems lacking.
- Next, there is no quick way to directly select the function you want. When you turn it on, it defaults to Air Fry. From there, you have to use the arrow buttons to get to your desired function.
- Lastly, the metal tray is badly packaged with very sticky tape that leaves hard-to-remove residue. You have to carefully scrub off the residue before using.
Between the too-hot-to-touch exterior and annoying cooling fan, I do not recommend purchasing this.

Great cable
on October 27, 2023
Posted by: ricks
Not all cables are the same, and when you specifically need a Thunderbolt, the options get pricey. But this Insignia Thunderbolt 4 cable is a high quality and cost effective option.
Though 8K displays are still uncommon, this cable supports it when you’re ready to upgrade. It also delivers 240W of power to charge your most hungry devices. But the feature I like most is its 40Gbps data transfer. All of a sudden, external drives come alive with blazing connectivity speed.
Like many high quality cables nowadays, the outside is braided, ensuring it doesn’t fray at the ends.
I have only two minor quips about the cable. The first is that the plugs are labeled with the Thunderbolt lightning symbol and a “4” underneath to show its designation. However the print is fairly dark and does not stand out enough against the black color of the plug. There is, however, a tag attached to the cable that’s quite legible indicating its specs. The second quip is that there is no velcro cable band to wrap it when not in use. Neither of these is a big deal.
So if you need a Thunderbolt 4 cable, look no further.

Each earbud has a rechargeable battery which provides up to 4 hours of wireless playback. Including the charging case, the PI5 can provide up to 12 hours of continuous playback.

Is there an App to set the equalizer?

The app currently does not have an equalizer function. Not sure if they plan to add this functionality in the future, but would be nice.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
