Better suited for horizontal vents
on May 29, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
I have an iPhone 6 Plus and tried this in my SUV's vertical vents. Install was quick and easy. But the vents tended to move around too much as this mount could not prevent them from turning. On a horizontal vent, I suspect the phone itself will rest slightly on the dashboard, preventing movement. Otherwise it's a good, solid, simple to use cell phone holder.

Good Sound – Awkward Fit
on May 22, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The sound of these Bose Frames (Altos) is surprisingly good. I really enjoyed the freedom of not having to wear earbuds or headphones while listening to music outdoors.
PROs
• Sound is excellent. I expected a tinny sound but was surprised they sounded so good. Even in windy conditions they were clear while letting you hear the surroundings.
• Passerby’s cannot really hear the sound. At most, they might hear indistinguishable noise.
• Very cool feature: to turn them off, set them upside down for a couple of seconds
• Lens are sharp and clear with UV protection.
CONs
• No volume control; only a single button on the right that switches on/off, play/pause, and answers calls.
• Not available with prescription lens.
• My biggest gripe is fit. They don’t fit as snug as I want because the speaker portion of the arm is too long, preventing the bridge to rest properly on my nose. And when I wear a baseball cap, it pushes the glasses even more forward. There is no way to make fit adjustments. This is by far the largest flaw.
OTHER
• Bose Connect app needs to be updated to version 8.1 to recognize the frames. Though you don’t need the app to pair with your phone, the app links to 3rd party apps that work with Frames as an immersive input. For example, you can interact with those apps with specific head gestures or by the direction you’re facing. Bose calls this functionality Augmented Reality.
• Style: if you don’t like the look of these, Bose also has a smaller frame with round lens called Rondo.
Bottomline: if you’re looking for a way to ditch your earbuds or headphones, check out the Bose Frames. But do try them on and see if either version fits.

Another Cord Cut
on May 5, 2019

The AirFly wireless transmitter is a nifty little gadget that lets you use wireless headphones on devices that still require wired ones. Though targeting use with AirPods, I tried the AirFly with a pair of “el cheapo” headphones as well as with my Bose QC35.
PROs
• Easy set up and pairing.
• Decent battery life – advertised as much as 8 hours. Takes only 2 hours to fully charge.
• Lightweight and portable makes it easy to carry, for example, on a flight
• Can use and charge at the same time.
CONs
• Very slight delay when I used it to transmit audio from an old TV. It didn’t really bother me, however.
• Using this with my cheap wireless headphones, there is a background tone that’s noticeable when the volume is low. When paired with my Bose QC35, I could adjust the volume of my Bose until the tone disappeared. But my cheap headphones do not have their own volume control.
Overall this is great for when you want to go wireless with a device that doesn’t support it: old TVs and stereos, airplanes with seatback screens, etc…

Rugged Update
on April 18, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The sound from the Sony SRS-XB2x series continues to be excellent for its size and price. The sound specs are identical to last year’s model, and I could not tell any difference in sound quality from the two. Sony’s Music Center app lets you control the speaker’s functionality for equalizer, lights, power, battery level announcement and more. It also lets you chain Sony speakers together to create an encompassing sound for a party. Like other Sony portable speakers, you can tap the speaker to make different sounds like scratch, snare, drum and cowbell. That’s a fun little gimmicky feature that I'm sure doesn’t get used much, but it’s there.
The biggest update from prior models is the IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating (last year’s model was only water resistant). That means you can drop it in water – even saltwater – and it won’t get damaged.
If you’re looking for a small portable, rugged bluetooth speaker with decent sound, this one is worth it.

Be Cool…or Hot
on April 2, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This is my first "smart" thermostat. Overall mine was a challenging setup because my HVAC is installed horizontally in the attic. That meant finding the C-wire on the HVAC board was tricky. Of course, this is not the T9's fault. As far as I know, all smart thermostat require the C-wire.
The two features I really like are the geofencing and the remote sensor. Geofencing allows the thermostat to detect when registered mobile phones have entered or left the home, and adjust the temperature accordingly. There is also a remote sensor you can put in another area of the house that tells the thermostat to prioritize the temperature that it's placed in. You can purchase additional sensors as well.
This is a nice upgrade from old school thermostats. It can be installed as DIY, but I encourage you to look at Honeywell's site and search YouTube for related videos so you get a good sense of what needs to be done.

Stick it to the dirt!

This is my first cordless vacuum and the euphoria of being unentangled reminds me of the first time I put on bluetooth headphones. You can concentrate on the vacuuming chore in front of you without having to worry about how you twist, turn, push and pull the handle…well, at least for 40 to 60 minutes. Unless you have a small space or are ok cleaning in spurts, this is unlikely to be the only vacuum you'll need. That said, what it does, it does excellently.
My first box had a brushroll that was stuck to one end and would not rotate, nor could it be extracted. Like Apple, Bose and other premium brands, Dyson’s support is excellent and quickly got me a replacement. From there, I read the spartan instructions and started vacuuming.
PROs
• Lots of attachments! See image for the 6 attachments that are included.
• Attachments are easy to latch on and off the vacuum. There’s no twisting, jostling or trying to keep the attachment attached. It’s a quick and secure red snap.
• The main brushroll does not need to be switched between carpet and hard floors. The vacuum intelligently adjusts the suction power when moving across different surfaces, though you can manually set the suction power as well.
• The info display gives you a countdown of battery time remaining on the current surface. If you run the vacuum off carpeting to a hard floor, the remaining time increases since it takes less energy on hard floors.
• Suction power is excellent and rivals corded vacuums. Power adjust automatically but can be set manually from three levels: eco, mid, and boost. Using auto on thick carpeting yields about 40 minutes of battery life; on had floors this increases to 60 minutes.
• Can be used in handheld mode which is fantastic for stairs because of the cordless design combined with powerful suction. And no hoses that get in the way either.
• Hard to describe, but the noise it makes isn’t grating like a typical vacuum…kind of like a jet engine sound. It’s also not as loud I would’ve thought. Using this doesn’t stress you out acoustically.
• Slim and maneuverable design makes it easy to get under furniture.
CONs
• Instructions and documentation consist mostly of simple diagrams. Though I don’t need a detailed tome, a little more description would be nice. For example, recommendations on which attachments to use when, or a troubleshooting guide.
• Power plug is a huge block that can make it difficult to share the wall outlet. This must be a Dyson design signature as other Dyson appliances have similar clunky plugs.
• Premium price, though offset with a 2-year warranty and excellent tech support.
• On/off switch is an easy to pull trigger. In fact, it’s too easy and you'll find yourself triggering the vacuum on when you don’t mean to. Though the trigger is handy, I often found myself wanting a real on/off switch not only to prevent accidental turn-ons, but also so I don’t have hold the trigger to keep the machine on.
• Vacuum does not come with an expanding hose attachment. When trying to vacuum some hard to reach areas, an expandable hose would be easier.
• There are six attachments. While you’re using one, two can be clipped to the main tube, and two others can be stored on the wall mount. But the last one has no place to attach when not in use.
If you have a corded vacuum that you’re happy with, this will not replace it due its limited battery and bin capacity. But it makes an excellent addition for use on stairs, under furniture, or for cleaning less than the whole house. I would not hesitate recommending this vacuum.

Fast Flash & Backup
on March 15, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This is an excellent flash drive with high speed USB 3.1 connectivity (backward compatible to USB 2.0). This particular model is the 128GB Ultra Fit, which is a low profile flash drive that won’t get in your way when plugged in to your computer. That low profile, however, also makes it easy to forget when you’ve got it plugged into someone else’s computer.
But if you do forget or lose it, the good news is that the device comes with a 1 year free subscription to SanDisk’s cloud backup called Flashback. You install the Flashback software on your Mac or Windows laptop, and the flash drive automatically backs up to the cloud. No credit card is required so the 1-year free is no-strings-attached. If you decide to keep the Flashback service, the annual subscription is extremely reasonable at $4.99 per year for the 128GB device. Other capacities have annual prices of $0.99 for 16GB, $1.99 32GB, $3.99 64GB, $9.99 256GB. Compared to typical cloud storage prices like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc… these prices are a bargain.
SanDisk also makes available two other apps: RescuePRO Deluxe to recover deleted files, and SecureAccess to store encrypted and password-protected files on the flash drive.
The high speed of USB 3.0 and 3.1 does make the flash drive run warm. Overall, though, the value-add software plus the performance makes it a no-brainer if you're looking for a flash drive.

Solid Ear Buds
on February 13, 2019
Posted by: ricks

The Jaybird RUN XT seems to have fixed the bluetooth connectivity issue that plagued the prior non-XT model. So far, I have not lost connectivity. The XT also adds IPX7 waterproofing in case you want to take these out in the rain. Note, they are not recommended for swimming or wearing in the shower.
PROs
• Great sound. When properly inserted, tones are crisp, clear, and the bass is not feeble.
• App allows customizing and sharing sound settings with the community. This is one of the best sound customizing apps I've seen.
• Lightweight, excellent fit, though may be too large for very small ears
CONs
• Background hiss is noticeable in low volume or during spoken word or quiet music. This is the biggest flaw in the sound.
• The snug fit blocks outside noise very well. But I would not wear these where it's critical to hear ambient sound, like biking on the street. These really should have a a setting to let ambient sound through when you want to hear it.
• Storage case, though compact, bulges more than other buds I've owned.
The sound quality and sound customizing app are strong enough features that I recommend trying these.

Cool, but useful?
on February 3, 2019
Posted by: ricks

This device delivers what it promises by passively measuring heart rate, respiration, and motion to measure sleep quality. It does a nice job of showing you the data from each night’s sleep, indicating REM, deep sleep, light sleep, awake time, and more. It also gives you a calendar view so you can enter journal notes for that night before you go to bed. But I dropped a star because you cannot edit that journal after the fact. There have been times I wanted to add notes after my sleep to comment things that woke me up during the night, for example, unexpected noise, room temperature etc.
That all said, I’m not sure how to make best use of the product. For example, if you try ways to improve sleep, you’ll know your methods are working because you’ll sleep better. Do you need this device in that case?

Rear Camera Plug Difficult for SUVs and Hatchbacks
on January 1, 2019
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The Rexing V1P Plus is a kit that comes with a lot of extras so you don’t need to buy additional tools. However, it has one major flaw for a DIY installer with an SUV or hatchback: the rear camera has a wire that’s not detachable from the camera itself. For a clean install, you have to fish the wire from the plug end through the tailgate/hatchback grommet. And the problem doing that is the plug has a right angle bend, making it nearly impossible to pass the wire through the grommet, depending on how your car is designed. If you have a sedan, this is not an issue as you won’t be pulling the wire through a grommet. Otherwise, I’d find a dash cam that has a rear camera straight plug, or get an extension wire, or get someone to install it for you.
PROs
• Front camera is easy to install with the provided tools. If you’re unsure how to do this, lots of videos on the internet will show you how.
• Includes hardwire kit if you don’t want to use the cigarette socket.
• Includes cable clips for areas where it’s not feasible to tuck the cable into the headliner
• Has a 2.4” screen to review the video immediately without downloading or transferring the micro SD card
• Includes a 32 GB micro SD card
CONs
• Rear camera cable is not detachable from the camera itself. And the plug for the rear camera has a right angle joint and that makes it really difficult to thread the cable through the grommet of an SUV tailgate. In my case, the tip of the plug broke off when trying to get it through, so the rear camera is useless to me now, unless I go through the hassle of splicing it to a new plug. If you have an SUV or hatchback, I’d find another camera with an easier to pass-through wire.
• The playback screen is at an odd angle such that you can’t view it when mounted on the windshield. I leave the screen turned off while driving since it’s useless anyway. My next dash cam will either have a more usable mounted screen, or none at all which would make it smaller and more discreet.
• The front camera uses a stick-on mount without a full swivel (you can rotate the camera lens up and down a bit). That combined with the angle of the screen makes it cumbersome to get a straight horizon video.
• No wi-fi
• GPS requires an optional accessory.
• No 4K video, only 1080p (front) and 480p (rear)
• Overall image is a bit too contrasty. During the day, it’s not a problem. But at night, many signs, especially bright ones, get washed out. To be fair, night vision is a weakness of all dash cams. And many, like this one, cannot make out the license plate number when headlights shine straight on to the plates in front of you.
Bottom line is this dash cam has some extras, but no GPS built-in, 4K resolution, or wi-fi. If you can get a good price, and you don’t have an SUV or hatchback, and don't mind its size, then it’s worth considering.

Download the Bowers & Wilkins free headphone app, available for Apple and Android for further control of the sound and noise cancellation, right on your phone. The PI5 headphones feature the latest innovations in adaptive noise cancellation along with 4 built-in microphones that pick up ambient noise and cancel it with an equal, but opposite, audio signal and enhance the call quality. There are three levels of Adaptive Noise Cancellation – High, Low and Auto, that can be controlled either by the multi-functional button on the left earbud or via the app. Similarly, the touch-sensitive button on the right earbud allows you to enable voice assistance. The buttons also allows you to control playback and phone call functions with single (play/pause, answer call), double (skip forward, end call), or triple presses (skip backward). Another stand-out feature of these headphones is the intuitive detection sensors that put the earphones on standby or reconnect them depending upon whether they are removed or put back on. Each earbud has a rechargeable battery which provides up to 4 hours of wireless playback. Including the charging case, the PI5 can provide up to 12 hours of continuous playback.

Is there an App to set the equalizer?

The app currently does not have an equalizer function. Not sure if they plan to add this functionality in the future, but would be nice.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
