Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

High Quality That May or May Not Be For You
on July 5, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If you’re thinking about investing in these Bose sleepbuds, then you likely have trouble falling or staying asleep from sound interruption. And no doubt you’ve tried the two most common ways to reduce sound interruption: ear plugs and sound machines. Ear plugs reduce ambient sound while sound machines mask it. Each type has its pluses and minuses. Ear plugs are cheap and effective, but can be uncomfortable or fall out, especially for side sleepers. Sound machines (or any ambient music) do a nice job of lulling you to sleep, but your sleeping partner has to be ok with the sound, and, loud noises may still interrupt your sleep.
These sleepbuds are basically a wearable sound machine. If you’re happy with ear plugs, then by all means, keep using them instead of shelling out big money for these. But if you’d like to have a personal sound machine that does not affect your sleeping partner, then these sleepbuds are for you.
My first thought about these was they'd be uncomfortable – I imagined wearing my sports earbuds to sleep. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are super comfortable because of the soft silicone shell and, more importantly, because they don’t extend far into the ear canal. This is the big problem with foam ear plugs – they eventually put pressure on the ear canal and cause pain. Wax or soft gel ear plugs (like Mack's) are more comfortable, but eventually accumulate sweat, dirt, and oil then fall out. The design of these sleepbuds addresses these issues and I can wear them all night without problems.
So that brings up the real question: do they work? The answer is a definitive maybe. They certainly deliver what they promise. You can pick from a selection of sounds and set the volume and duration of play. Though you need the phone app to start the buds, once started, the phone does not need to stay connected. One very cool feature is you can set an alarm which plays in the sleepbuds, and so won't disturb your sleeping partner.
But the reason I say they "maybe" work is because it depends on the problem you’re solving. If your problem is loud interruptions (snoring partner, heavy street noise, etc…) then the any sound machine will be problematic. The only way to mask those interruptions is to play your ambient sound loud. If you can sleep through loud ambient sound, then you can certainly turn up the volume on these sleepbuds without affecting those around you. But if the interrupting sound is really loud, then you may be better off with ear plugs or other sound reducing aids. The way to think about this is imagine sleeping on an airplane (where the ambient sound is loud) and a baby is crying some rows away from you. If that’s your environment, then these can work for you. In fact, airplane noise is one of the sound options. But if that baby is close to you, the ambient sound of the plane may not be enough to mask the crying, and ear plugs may be better.
Of course, if loud interruptions aren't your problem and you just need a sound machine that doesn’t affect your partner, these work great for that scenario. My only issue on that front is it's currently a limited set of sounds, and there's no ability to upload your own. It would be nice if they enabled a community to create and share sounds. Personally, I would prefer some lower pitched sounds with slower rhythms. Bose limits the ability to hold larger sound files like music to ensure they would play all night without the battery dying. But I would be happier if I could add my own music and let it play until the battery died, even if that was in the middle of the night. The sleepbuds also produce a certain amount of low level but discernible clicking noise. I would've expected a cleaner sound from Bose.
Overall this is a very niche high quality product. If you fall into the category of 1) need a personal sound machine without affecting others, or 2) want to mask a low to moderate level of noise, then gives these at try.

Solid Chromebook
on June 21, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The HP Chromebook X2 is a solid performing Chromebook while being a good value as well. At first, I was a little concerned that the M3 processor wouldn't be powerful enough. But after using it for a couple of days, it held its own for general browsing, email, and office work. The keyboard, though not backlit, is easy on the hands for a portable machine.
Of course, one of the main features is the detachable screen that converts it into a tablet. This might be useful to some people for watching movies, shows, playing games or reading when you’re not doing much content creation. Because it double as a tablet, that means the screen contains the processor and memory. That makes it top heavy when using it a laptop and if it's pushed back too far, it will fall backwards.
The other highlight of the Chromebook is the included pen. Besides being an input device, it has other utilities like magnifying lens, laser pointer (not a real laser, just makes it easier to see where your pointing on the screen), and screen capture. Unfortunately, the pen is held in place by an outside loop on of the right side of the keyboard. It can get caught on objects when pulling the machine out of your bag.
Overall, this is a solid option for anyone needing a Chromebook.

Good Once You Know How to Insert Them
on June 20, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The Jabra Elite Active 65t have a lot of great features like auto-pause when you remove them, and ambient sound toggle (Jabra calls this HearThrough).
• It took a while to figure out how to insert them properly and get a good seal. This is mentioned in documentation but the trick is to make sure to twist the buds so that the mic stem is point down towards your mouth. Anatomically speaking, make sure the mic stem is rotated past the tragus of your ear – see attached photo.
• I am no audiophile but I find the sound quite acceptable.
• The app to adjust the sound changes the equalizer and the HearThrough ambient mic depending on what you’re doing, not by what you’re listening to. For example, the jogging mode and the commute mode turn on ambient HearThrough mic so you can hear traffic etc, and increase treble on the equalizer. The office mode turns off HearThrough. I think it makes sense to toggle HearThrough based on my activity. But I'd rather have the equalizer itself be determined by what I'm listening to, not what I'm doing.
• Regardless of the app, you can toggle HearThrough with a double press of a button on the right bud as well. The HearThrough is a very useful feature.
• The overall shape and texture of the buds makes them slippery. When trying to insert them, it's easy for your fingers to slip and toggle one of the buttons. Not a deal killer, but annoying.
• The sound from one of the buds occasionally loses connection and drops. I have this issue with other wireless buds, though these Jabra buds recover quicker.
If you’re in the market for a set of wireless earbuds, give these a shot, but be sure to insert them properly else you will be disappointed.

Get Them if You Have the HT-Z9F
on May 12, 2018
Posted by: ricks

You should absolutely get these if you have the matching soundbar (HTZ9F). They are great speakers and complete the immersive sound of that Dolby ATMOS soundbar. I dropped a star only because they are dedicated to the HTZ9F and will not work with others. That’s too bad. I suppose it's Sony's way of doing some very targeted market segmentation, whereas, I think they should have sold it as a complete kit with the soundbar.
Regardless, extremely easy to set up, with great clarity, and no noise or other interference like in lower quality speakers.

Makes the Sound Alive
on May 12, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This soundbar in combination with the optional rear speakers really makes the sounds come alive. When I'm watching an action movie, it’s like Thor’s hammer is whizzing right over my head. When I'm playing a video game, it’s like the dragons of Skyrim are breathing fire down my neck. And when I'm listening to romantic music, it’s like Weird Al is pumping his accordion right in front of me.
If you’re an audiophile or purist and are very particular about your sound, you’ll never be happy with any soundbar, let alone life in general. But for folks like me who appreciate high quality sound without a lot of fuss (i.e., lazy people), the Sony HT-9ZF hits the spot. Incredibly simple to set up, with menus that show up on the TV—you don’t have to deal with Morse code of flashing lights like on other soundbars.
I upgraded from a $300 5.1 soundbar kit that included the subwoofer and rear speakers. That kit still had wires running from rear speakers to the subwoofer. More annoyingly, it had a constant hiss in the rear speakers when playing at low volumes. But with this Sony, except for the power plugs, everything is truly wireless. And the sound clarity is awesome – no hiss or other distracting noise. What’s really nice is there’s a separate volume boost for voice (and one for subwoofer), regardless of the sound mode you’re in. That really helps as so many shows now feature actors mumbling out their lines as they’re lost in space.
There are two downsides. The first is you miss out on the complete immersive experience without buying the additional rear speakers. That’s true for any soundbar, of course. And even though this one does a decent job with its vertical sound projection from the front, I highly recommend getting the rear speakers. The second downside is the HDMI connectors are angled and don’t have much clearance. I suppose they’re better for certain wall mounts, but less useful than straight connectors for everyone else.
Bottom line is this is a very high quality soundbar that paired with the optional rear speakers will satisfy most people.

Clean Air While Playing Paper Toss
on April 27, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If there are times when you want to breathe clean air and are bored, then this Dyson is for you. Not only does it do a great job filtering the air, but it’s hoop design will let you entertain yourself for hours by tossing paper wads through it.
What’s nice about this premium air cleaner is that:
• It’s quiet, including a night mode that turns off all display lights
• Automatic, turns on upon sensing poor air quality, and turns off when the purity hits the target you set.
• Allows you to circulate air as much or little as you want, including a full 360 degrees
• Easy to assemble
• Gives you tons of data about your inside air: temperature, humidity, and 4 categories of pollutants.
The appliance superbly does what it’s supposed to, but there’s more. Dyson has nailed the wi-fi and optional (free) app. Typically apps and wi-fi on home appliances seem like an after-thought with clunky setup, poor connectivity, and useless features. But Dyson paid as much attention to the software as they did the hardware. Set up was easy-peasy. The app not only gives you full control of the purifier, but also gives you outside air quality information based on your location.
It’s an excellent machine that loses one star because of the following:
• Obnoxious-sized power plug. Easily the largest plug I’ve ever seen in any home device. Everything else about the design is sleek, but this one makes you scratch your head and wonder what they were thinking.
• No integration to any of the big three home platforms (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Homekit)
• You need to create an account to use the optional (free) app.
• Premium price, which I expect will carry over to the replacement filters as well
If you’re in the market for an air purifier, wad up some paper and treat yourself by getting this one.

Not as convenient as I'd like
on April 21, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This multi-surface does a decent job cleaning floors and rugs – no complaint about its core functionality. But there are a few shortcomings that keep me from rating it higher.
First, because it collects dirty water, it requires cleaning after every use, no matter whether it's a small or large job. This point probably applies to all appliances in this category, not just this one. And since most jobs are small, it's more work to clean the vacuum than it is to clean a small spill. If you’re planning to use this as part of a regular routine or for large clean ups, then it makes sense to consider.
Second, there is no edge cleaning. Deep corners, base boards, and other edges will have to be attacked with other tools. It has no attachments, even for dry vacuuming.
Third, the trigger for releasing solution is badly placed. When pushing the vacuum around, it's easy for your fingers to slip to the trigger, releasing fluid when you don't mean to.
Lastly, for lack of a better description, the overall feel of the appliance is clunky. The misplaced trigger above is one example. Another is it's easy to spill cleaning fluid when trying to pour it into the clean water tank because of the spout design. And once you fill the clean water tank, it's easy to cap it in a way that looks closed, but isn't. The result is water quickly leaks through the bottom and onto your floor. And finally, when emptying the dirty water tank, the strainer is not snapped to the tank so if you forget it's there, it will fall out when you turn over the tank to pour out the water.
Now imagine your kids or pets cause a mess and you’re in a hurry to clean it up. When you’re in a rush, you are less likely to pay attention to details like capping the tank properly, keeping hands away from the trigger, etc… You can argue this is all user error, but I think its overall design is not good for when you’re in a hurry. Certainly you'll remember all these details after a few uses, but its first time use could have been thought through better. As a result, I can only recommend this if you’re planning to use this methodically.

Show 'em your pearly whites
on April 14, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
I never knew I needed a toothbrush with an app, but this one has it. The app guides you how fast to move the brush, shows which part of your mouth to use it on, and monitors how much pressure to place. All very useful as I discovered I was originally moving the brush head around too quickly. The app also lets you set brushing goals, and gives you brushing factoids. I didn't find the goals or factoids useful.
I've been using various Philips Sonicare brushes for a few years. To be honest, they all do a great job and I can't definitively say this one is the cleanest or not. This package does, however, give you a lot for your money with plenty of extra brush heads and a few storage options for the handle, including one for travel. It is the fanciest looking one, however.

Good Speaker
on March 27, 2018

The speaker has good sound, as expected from Sony. But it's some of the other features that really makes this a decent value.
• Waterproof – you can take this to a pool, beach, or the shower
• Speaker chain – this speaker can be chained wirelessly to many other Sony speakers.
• Very little audio delay when watching videos – depending on the video source, the speaker does a good job (though not perfect) keeping the sound in sync with the video. Netflix in particular works well, even when multiple speakers are chained.
• Long life – 12 hours battery life when the lights are off
There is also a Sony music app to control even more settings such as fine tuning the sound, lights, power options and more.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
