Great in helping recover
on December 23, 2018

As my body ages, it takes longer to recover from workouts. This vibrating roller is very effective in getting relief and helping relax the muscles. There are 3 vibration settings and I've never needed to use anything higher than the lowest one. The material is very firm and the diameter is large. That means this is best used with larger muscles. A little pricey but it is high quality and should last a long time.

They Cut Corners to Make This
on November 15, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
Don't you hate it when you're using your laptop and pick it up and you accidentally toggle the power button on the side? Well, HP solved that issue by literally cutting the corners from the back edge and placing the power button at a diagonal. Sure, they could've moved the power button to the keyboard surface but then it wouldn't look as cool. And this machine does look cool. But this machine also functions well.
• For daily office use, I get several hours of longevity before needing to recharge.
• The 4K IPS touch screen is wonderful
• The laptop has both face recognition and fingerprint sensor for login via Microsoft Hello.
• The x360 in the name refers to the fact that you can rotate the laptop screen all the way back to put it in tablet mode, though it doesn't detach. It's a little heavy for true tablet use, but you could rest it like an upside-down V ("/\") to watch videos or give presentations.
• The keyboard is pleasant and has a number pad – a must have for finance or anyone who uses Excel much.
• HP cleverly squeezed in 4 arrow keys by using full size keys for the left and right arrows, and small keys for the up and down ones. This makes sense as the left/right are used far more than up/down.
I did drop one star though for a few reasons.
• Despite the impressive screen resolution, it has more glare than I would expect for something advertised as anti-glare.
• A wireless stylus for pen input is included, but there's no place to store it— surprising at this price point.
• The stylus runs on a single AAAA battery with no way to turn it off; I don't know if the stylus battery drains when idle.
• And, lastly, the keyboard has a backlight but no sensor to detect your hand approaching and leaving the keys. Rather, it waits for keyboard taps to light up, then times out after lack of activity. My sense is it will burn the battery more than necessary, so I keep the backlight off.
You can browse through the specs all you want, but let me tell you this laptop is a keeper.

Summa Com Latte

If you want to graduate to good coffee, you need to get this Keurig. Handsome and super simple to use for making coffees as well as cappuccinos and lattes. Keurigs are known for producing a good quick cup of coffee via their K-cup pods. Now I'm also impressed by their ability to foam milk just as easily. No more tinkering with a hand foamer, and definitely no more stopping by Starbucks for a vente-give-me-all-your-money drink. If you’re a stickler about these things, you'll realize this machine does not use pressure to make a true espresso with all its rich flavors and crema. But don’t let that dissuade you from giving this a shot.
And if you're in the mood for a little holiday drink, here's my recipe: fill milk to the cappuccino line of the frother. Then, fill eggnog to the latte line. Then run the frother on latte mode while making a shot of coffee in the pod side of the machine. When everything is ready in, pour the frothed milk over your shot and enjoy a yummy eggnog latte. You're welcome.

Excellent Color Laser Printer for SOHO
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If you’re a small office/home office that prints under 1500 pages/month, this is an excellent machine. Brother has built a solid, first class printer with one of the easiest set ups I've encountered in any home device.
PROs
• Easy setup. Took under 10 minutes to pull out of the box, remove the packing material, insert the toner, and set up the wifi. The touch screen makes it simple to enter a wifi password. A couple of nice touches: 1) As you type in the password, it does not mask your password with asterisks so you can catch errors right away; 2) The printer can only connect to 2.4 Ghz wifi band and will not display the SSID of 5 GHz networks. I've more than once tried to connect other home devices to the 5 GHz network only to discover later they only operate on 2.4 GHz networks. Once connected, the printer will check for firmware updates, of which there are two which are installed sequentially.
• Excellent 25 ppm speed (color or b/w) and quiet output.
• 250 sheet input capacity is greater than most printers in this entry level class. The extra capacity does add height to the machine, so make sure the dimensions will work for you.
• Easy networking or printing from phone/tablet. Once turned on and added to my network, it automatically showed up as an AirPrint printer on my iPhone.
• Also a nice touch, the printer was properly named on my wifi Xfinity wifi network. Often when I add a device, the name shows up based on the networking chipset which may have nothing to do with the product.
• Sharp, clean output for both text and graphics. Excellent color and saturation.
CONs
• The manual paper tray for envelopes, odd sized paper, labels etc can only feed one sheet at a time. You will not be able to load a stack of envelopes, for example, and print out addresses on them. (The paper tray takes Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, A6, and Folio (8" x 13")).
• Pages curl on two-sided printing. Depending on the type of paper you use, it may flatten out after a while, but you will definitely notice curling when printing two-sided. Printing one-sided did not curl the paper.
• No edge-to-edge printing. The print area will enforce a 0.16 inch (4.23mm) margin on all sides.
• Heavy – weighs around 40 pounds.
• USB 2.0 only. If you plan to connect this directly to a computer, you cannot use the faster USB 3.0.
There's a lot to like but I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because of the page curling and single-page manual feed…two items that will irk many offices. Regardless, I still recommend the printer.

It's OK
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind is an ok vacuum for the price. You have to pay up for better features and a more powerful motor, something I recommend you consider if it's in your budget. One thing that irks me about Bissell is they don't pay attention to details. The model I received #2255 does not appear on the Bissell website. It appears to be the same as the 2256 except the triangle pet hair corner tool is replaced by an optional Fabreeze filter instead.
Installation
• To install the handle, you need a cross-tip screwdriver. The screws go in at a slightly awkward angle because the handle gets in the way, but it's manageable. Not sure why they didn’t just have a self-click install or a different screw placement.
• Similarly, in case you ever have to remove the roller brush (which you will eventually as it is not tangle-free), there are several cross-tip screws to pull out. Again, manageable, but higher priced machines tend to be easier to deal with.
• Had to guess a bit at the install of the attachment holder. They should’ve included an up arrow to indicate which end is up. Not difficult to figure out for most people, but just lack of attention to detail.
• The crevice tool for the 2255 does not store on the vacuum itself. On the 2256 the crevice tool can be stored inside the extension wand, but it does not fit for the 2255. Again, a lack of attention to detail. My wife found an ingenious workaround by rubber banding the crevice tool to the handle – see photo.
• The instructions don’t specifically mention which end of the hose to attach to the accessories if you want to use them. Shouldn’t be a big deal to figure out for most people, but there will always be newbies who may get frustrated. Again, lack of attention to details.
Use
• The machine is light because the motor is light. That means it's easy to maneuver and carry, but also means you won't get the deepest clean, at least on a single pass.
• The crevice tool is designed to pick up debris along its long side or from its top end like a traditional crevice tool. You designate this by twisting the crevice tool at its base. It's a cool feature but its description is missing from the manual.
• The auto rewind cord is fantastic.
• Cleaning vacuums is always a bit dirty. At least this one allows you to keep your hands away from the door that drops the dirt out. Your hands will still get dirty as you then need to reach in to pull out and clean the filter.
I recommend the vacuum if it's what your budget allows. Otherwise, consider models with a stronger motor.

Nice Addition for a Small(ish) Kitchen
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
This is an excellent functioning convection toaster oven with lots of bells and whistles. Its compact footprint contains a surprising amount of volume. The reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it's a little clunky to use to go through the different options – nothing unmanageable though. Also, there's no option to keep the display off when not in use, so you’re left with light pollution in your kitchen. DeLonghi has a similar model with a slightly larger capacity for not much larger footprint. It's a little more expensive, but if it is in your budget money and space-wise, you'll be happier with that. If not, I'd still recommend this.

6 Hour Wireless Ear Buds
on September 24, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The two best things about these buds is their 6 hours battery life (an hour longer than the leading brands) and the ear hooks. These JLab buds at least have a hook to keep them from completely falling off. But, the overall sound is average, mostly because it was difficult to get the snug fit ear buds need. The power buttons on the buds are on the ear facing side. The result is that you have to power them on before inserting them, and invariably you end up toggling the surface controls on the outside when you don't mean to. The case is quite large and heavy for buds as well, but that’s because they hold 32 hours of charge. Overall I give them 3.5 stars and recommend you to try them, especially at an MSRP of $150.

It's No Longer a One-Man Show
on September 10, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
For the longest time, if you wanted best-in-class noise canceling with excellent sound, there was only one game in town. With the release of the Sony WH-1000XM3, you now have a choice. TL;DR – if you’re deciding between this Sony and “the other guys,” get the one that fits you better. That said, these headphones edge out the competition on noise canceling and sound quality. There are differences in usability, however, that might sway you one way or the other.
• Playback Controls: For volume and playback control, these use swipe gestures on the right cup. Swiping the right cup up/down changes volume; swiping forward/backwards changes track; and double tapping toggles play/pause. More often than not, I found myself swiping diagonally which meant I’d end up switching tracks when I wanted to change volume. My preference is to have buttons over gestures, though gestures are more convenient once you do it right.
• Ambient Sound Control: I love the Quick Attention Mode. When you cover the entire right cup with your hand, the headset temporarily turns down the volume and lets you hear ambient sound. Removing your hand immediately turns off Quick Attention Mode. Extremely useful when you need to briefly chat with a flight attendant, colleague, or hear announcements. You can also toggle ambient sound via a button on the left side, or adjust ambient volume via the headphone’s app. The other guy’s headphones don’t have a quick attention feature.
• Noice Canceling: I find Sony’s NC on par with the perceived market leader, and did slightly better masking out TV noise. One discernible difference is the Sony leaves a higher pitched background than the other ones. For all practical purposes, however, both are very effective and way ahead of any other brand.
• Comfort: Very light, well cushioned, and easy to wear for long stretches. The cups are slightly smaller than the other ones, which makes them a better fit for my wife than for me.
• Sound Quality: Excellent on its own, and, the app allows further customization. Overall sound is a bit brighter with crisper highs than the other one. This is likely the DSEE HX feature at work. The Sonys edge out the other guys here.
• Bluetooth: You can have multiple sources connected if one device is for music playback and the other is for talking. To do this, you designate the music source as an A2DP connection, and the talking source as HFT/HSP. The other guy’s headset is far easier and more functional on this feature, and one that I use constantly.
Bottom line is if you’re looking for premium NC headphones, these should be on your shortlist.

Hair today, gone tomorrow.
on August 15, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
The Philips Norelco 9000 Multigroomer is a solid product that even a werewolf would appreciate. I'm no werewolf but here's my take:
PROS
• Easy to handle and carry
• Lots of attachments for precise grooming
• Battery lasts 6 hours as advertised. Hopefully it does not degrade too quickly.
• Easy to clean by rinsing under warm water
• Comes with a nice case to contain everything
CONS
• The attachments are not well marked or organized. They come in little plastics bags that don't reseal, and over time they will get become one big pile if you’re not careful. Then again, you’re likely to ever only use a handful of them.
• The wide trimmer blade is not quite wide enough to work as a true haircut trimmer for most people. For that, you will still want a dedicated haircut trimmer, else it will take you a long time. Note: I use this as a haircutter anyway because my hair is fine, and I'm follicle-challenged on top. So for me, pulling out this wireless multigroomer is more convenient than my wired haircutter.
OTHER
Do check the specifications for the guard length you need. For example, I prefer a 1/8" guard for the hair cutting blade, but the package's shortest one is 5/32".
I would certainly put this on your shortlist of trimmers.

The 80's Would Be Jealous
on July 26, 2018
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
It’s surprising that Sony didn’t release an 80’s retro Walkman-esque version like these. Put on this lightweight set on and get ready to rock with Def Leppard, jam with the Lionel Richie and slow dance with Air Supply. Very decent sound without all the fuss of in-ear buds, or the heft of on-ear sets. The mic is good, too.
The downsides include plastic blister packaging that’s sure to cause wrap rage, and annoying ergonomics for selecting the limited equalizer and other functions. These downsides are offset, however, by the price, making this a bargain even when not on sale.

Is there an App to set the equalizer?

The app currently does not have an equalizer function. Not sure if they plan to add this functionality in the future, but would be nice.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
