I think most of the films Disney made BEFORE the world starting picking them apart for racist undercurrents or secret messages are truly undying classics. The animation was top notch and now that they are remastering those titles consistently to Blu-ray standards, we can really see it. If you grew up in the 80s (or earlier), then you've probably got memories of seeing worn 16mm prints of many of these classics at school assemblies before Christmas break. The new Disney Blu's are immaculate & while memories of projected film are (in my mind) true perfection, seeing the films in their pristine original state is wonderful.

Ariel Kleiman had only directed a handful of short films before entering the world of international cinema last year with PARTISAN; a strange tale of a secret city in a foreign future perhaps not so far off. Make no mistake: this is NOT a science fiction film. It's almost a dystopian tale, but it centers around the utopian enclave created by the hardened but gentle Gregori (Vincent Cassel) for the raising of children outside the conventional failures of standard society. But it's not all talky politico-babble either, so don't run and hide. A captivating and personal story about coming of age, learning the assassin's trade & discovering, as a child, the hypocrisies of adulthood required to reign & protect. Just watch it.

I think this is one of the most enduring Christmas comedy films. I grew up with it (along with the ultra creepy CHRISTMAS CAROL starring George C. Scott), though, so I'm pleased as holiday punch to grow into all the humor of this masterpiece. The original Jean Shepherd story is perfect, & Bob Clark gives the screen treatment everything it deserves. Also, for those horror nerds out there, it's awesome to see where Clark (RIP) ended up after starting his career with grisly goodies like BLACK CHRISTMAS & DEATHDREAM. The added digital copy makes this a perfect buy.
Ride along with RoboCop as he cleans up the city of Detroit with this release featuring the Director's Cut of the original classic, as well as RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3.

The initial release of the original ROBOCOP on blu was great & cheap! So to bump up the price for a new remaster is kind of o.k. if it were just for the new 4K (highly deserved) edition. But, since you get the sequels of descending quality to boot, it's certainly worth an upgrade. And for collector/librarians such as myself, it's always nice to consolidate several titles into one small box on the shelf. ROBOCOP 2 is a lot of fun. Part 3, directed by cult fave Fred Dekker (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, MONSTER SQUAD) is more of a curiosity piece concerning what happens when a visionary director is offered a paying Hollywood job instead of good money for his own projects. Catch this one on sale and you're made in the shade!
Bad Boys I and II are featured in this special digitally enhanced collection. Former video director Michael Bay had his first big hit with the 1995 action comedy, which also returned producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson to the big-budget, high-violence movies that they successfully churned out in the '80s. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are two Miami cops who watch as 100 million dollars in heroin, from the biggest drug bust of their careers, is stolen out of the basement of police headquarters. This puts them hot on the trail of French drug lord Fouchet (Tchéky Karyo), who leaves a trail of bodies in his wake and only one witness, Julie Mott (Téa Leoni), who quickly teams up with our heroes. In the 2003 sequel, Burnett and Lowrey have been assigned to head up a task force to investigate the illegal trafficking of ecstasy into the city. They discover that an underground gang war has been instigated by drug kingpin Johnny Tapia (Jordi Molla). In order to cut off the flow of the designer drug, they have to take down Tapia.

While I prefer the second flick, both BAD BOYS adventures are fun, funny blasts of action. Will Smith & Martin Lawrence are great together and Michael Bay knows how to spend money on insane set pieces.

Robert Rodriguez has proven more recently that his love of exploitation cinema is true, but this piece from 1998 was an awesome early indicator. Set up very much like a BREAKFAST CLUB rip-off with a thick layer of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS paranoia, THE FACULTY has a pretty great cast and killer special FX. Thoroughly enjoyable & worthy of multiple viewings.

Dan O'Bannon's writing pedigree is much longer than his director's filmography (ALIEN, DEAD & BURIED, HEAVY METAL, etc), but this golden nugget of 80s cinema proves his genius. Based on a book written as the original sequel to George Romero's classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, ROTLD has a killer soundtrack, great cast, dynamite lines & perfectly grotesque special FX. A must-see!

Ray Bradbury prefigured much about the technology that we now live & interact with in his novel, Fahrenheit 451, but fortunately wasn't quite correct about the fascist clampdown to control our thoughts & behavior. But I think it's still something we fear deeply; book-burning & rampant censorship to keep everyone "safe". Kurt Wimmer's EQUILIBRIUM presents a higher-tech dystopia policed by a monastic order of experts in, yes, gun-fu. The performances are solid enough and the feel is of a classic 80s action/sci-fi flick.

HBO's "Tales From the Crypt" series ran 7 years, featuring scores of great directors & performers. Ushering horror from the end of the 80s into the 90s, a decade largely devoid of horror films, The Cryptkeeper's tales are always sure to titillate. There some truly great episodes & some oddball duds, but on the whole, you'll always find time for the sleazy stories & pun-laden intros.

RE-ANIMATOR is a perfect blend of Lovecraftian weirdness, dark humor & amazing gore. The special effects, all practical, no digital, never get old & the performances are all on point. A true classic of 80s horror!
