I'm a fan of all three of the above-mentioned individuals' work, but not across the board. The mix of whimsy & seriousness that Jarmusch often brings to the table plays out quite well in this art-house look at the American western. With Johnny Depp as our unwitting guide and Neil Young serving up a beautiful, ethereal soundtrack of original, instrumental music we take a sweet & bittersweet trip across the gorgeous black & white landscape of our frontier past.

How can you beat James Spader, Kurt Russell, pyramids AND aliens?? Roland Emmerich's career is in big-budget action epics like INDEPENDENCE DAY, DAY AFTER TOMORROW & THE PATRIOT. Arguably, these are not fine films and not all of them are even good junk food. 1994's STARGATE, which spawned the popular TV series, is like a deluxe bag of Doritos. After all, few have tackled the whole "aliens built the pyramids" thing on a grand cinematic scale, but it DOES seem to be a magic ingredient to great moving pictures snack food. (What else...? The Michael Bay TRANSFORMERS series & ALIENS VS PREDATOR, I think...)

Told in almost-real time with fluid camera & a fantastic drums-only score, BIRDMAN brings laugh-out-loud moments & hand-wringing miserable darkness as Keaton's character attempts the "true grit" of the Broadway theater after a career of costumed super hero-ing.

Jean-Marc Vallée's gritty tale of the murky early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is both informative & moving. McConaughey proves his worth as the straight man saddled with the gay plague who will not be satisfied to sit back and let it run it's course. Giving a great look at the real-life underground buyers clubs that actually were responsible for pushing medicine & treatment of the virus to where it is today, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is tearjerker with a sense of real world hope & compassion.

I've been a fan of the PLANET OF THE APES series since I was a kid. This new Blu-Ray set has five classic films, starting with the 1968 classic & ending with the 1973 BATTLE FOR & tons of fun extras. AND, it takes up the space of one disc on your library shelf. Zowee! All five films are well worth the attention of any science fiction fan who's never seen them. The iconography, of course is inescapable; the statue of liberty in ruins, etc. Much like the other Charlton Heston doomed-future epic, SOYLENT GREEN, it's hard to be unaware of the apes even if you've never seen minute one. With charming monkey-men & bleak, despair-laden endings, the apes must be held in high (if sometimes silly!) esteem!

Craven dismantles & reinvigorates horror

1996, smack dab in the middle of one of the worst decades for horror cinema, one of its revered masters, Wes Craven, takes apart the slasher flick, pokes fun at its guts AND manages to provide memorable scares. A slew of latter-day slashers sprouted up in the wake of SCREAM's raging box office success, some fun, many stupid. But the public & the film industry were nonetheless reminded of something important: WE LOVE SCARY MOVIES.
Originally titled SCARY MOVIE, Craven's movie gave us slashers who grew up watching slashers & a Scooby-Doo plot that's sure to entertain. As a hardcore fan of horror cinema, this gem gave me blood, scares, creeps & a fun, knowing reminder of all the little pieces that add up to a fine, fun freaky movie. With this, the SCARY MOVIE series would never have been born (not the worst thing, maybe) AND the following decade's earnest return to creative, outside-the-lines horror movies most likely would have been stuck at the drawing board.

EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE (1978) & it's follow-up, ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN (1980) are the kinda flicks that used to be on TV Sunday afternoons. You know, back when you had to check the TV Guide for listings.
Clint Eastwood is Philo Beddoe, the notorious bare-knuckle boxer who runs afoul of any and every sort of trouble, from bikers to the Mafia. At his side through two films worth of hijinx & monkey business (literally) is Geoffrey Lewis & the other star of the show, Clyde.
Made during the end of the 70s, these movies have action, fist fights, car chases, fist fights & a monkey who occasionally fist fights. Combining a sense of knowing silliness while genuinely telling their albeit hair-brained stories, this double feature is free of the heavy sarcasm & useless "in" jokes that more modern films of its ilk are bogged down with.
Sit back, crack open a brew, peel a banana & let 'em rip!

Daniel Stamm teams up with Eli Roth (in the producer's chair this time) to take on that most popular of modern movie horror styles, the found footage or pseudo-documentary flick. At least since 1999's BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, which was by no means the first of its kind, shaky, handheld footage has translated into scariness. Or at least, it's supposed to. With THE LAST EXORCISM, Stamm sets us up with a group making a documentary for and about a pastor who's been performing exorcisms since he was a teen. Clever, witty & atmospheric, this movie takes a poke at the subgenre of possession flicks and lends genuine elements of horror in the process. Borrowing heavily from the kind of material found in 70s classics like RACE WITH THE DEVIL, Stamm twists us at the very last moment.

No matter how much you clean this one up, you'll still feel a little dirty after watching it. Wes Craven created a name for himself in horror with this first film, helping to define the sick & sleazy seventies exploitation film feel. Blissfully free of cell phones or SUVs, the original LAST HOUSE adds modern nastiness to the Ingmar Berman classic, THE VIRGIN SPRING, of which it is a retelling. Classic horror, classic sleaze, classic sadism & revenge.

The Big Lebowski somehow became a household "word" within a few years of its release. How? Why? Who cares, man? A comedy of the ridiculous, as only the Coen Brothers can do, replete with its own set of neo-icons of idiocy & democracy deserves everything it is: one of the best modern comedies. Period. The steelbook edition includes killer new bowling artwork, all the extras from the deluxe editions past AND a digital HD copy via Ultraviolet/iTunes. Universal has stepped up their game & do not appear to be relenting with their recent wave of catalogue reissues. And this, my friends & dudes, is a prime example.
