Neo-classic Apple keyboard

In an emergency (after I ruined my old keyboard/mouse with a spill) I purchased a non-Apple wireless keyboard/mouse a couple years ago. My reason was bluntly simple: couldn't afford the $100 combo price to replace the original Apple items.
Flash forward less time than I'd had the original gear & the replacements need replacing! I went back to this classic keyboard because I love the slim-but-sturdy feel and NOT HAVING TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES. EVER. The number pad is a necessity for editing work that I do, and it was also refreshing to get back to a keyboard that didn't have certain regions temporarily lose function. I would still be using my original anyway if not for the spill accident.
Flash forward less time than I'd had the original gear & the replacements need replacing! 1st sound bar experience was easy!

I've had a standard 5.1 surround set-up for many years. When I purchased my Vizio 50" flatscreen a year and a half ago to go with my 1st Blu-ray player, I didn't know that my old audio set-up (not top-of-the-line by any stretch!) wasn't equipped with the proper inputs to transmit the fabulous blu-ray audio I was supposed to be experiencing. After saving for a bit, I purchased this 5.1 sound bar set-up and was reintroduced into the world of surround sound! I think the 5.1 is a must-have for movie lovers, as opposed to the more readily available 3.1 systems.
I run my turntables through a mixer & into the sound bar as well, and it sounds great. If I could take one half star off, it would be for the very low volume level while using the Bluetooth input signal. While this feature wasn't my reason for purchasing, it is still a welcome treat to play audio from my phone without plugging it in. Unfortunately I have to crank up the soundbar to get semi-decent volume. Otherwise, it was a great experience with new tech.

Fans of PAN'S LABYRINTH will feel like they're taking a trip into areas familiar to them through a dream-like connection. The variety of friends who recommended this show to me should've sent me searching years ago, but now that I've finally found Community staring at me from a BestBuy kiosk at the right price, it is time. I watch almost no TV on TV, following a few shows when they hit disc format. And almost no TV comedies. Then there's Community. The set-up allows for typical college misadventures with the wrinkle of mixed ages & backgrounds for the characters. And the characters build up the possibility for the wild, fun episodes that pay homage to classic movies & situations. And I'm glad to see Chevy Chase being funny again after VEGAS VACATION made me think he'd actually died.

As a kid (I was 10 when this came out), I couldn't convince my parents to let me see this in theaters. So naturally I REALLY wanted to see it. When it hit TV a few years later, I found it not quite what I'd built up in my mind. Despite that, I've managed to watch it several times since & it seems to get better every time. Andrew McCarthy in the 80s is pretty much perfect. Perfectly weird & perfectly awkward. So if you have him run around puppeteering a dead body for 90min while hiding from the mob, it's bound to be fun! Another cheap classic on Blu-ray!

Great trailer & concept w/slight fizzle

The promise of a mustachioed Kevin Bacon chasing & terrifying two boys who've stolen his police car is mouth-watering. The trailer looks like a really great modern version of a classic drive-in style picture. Much like those exploitation films of yore, the trailer delivers something much juicier than the actual entree. That said, the film is still pretty good & worth watching. It just doesn't have enough creepy cop Bacon (get it?) being creepy. It plays out more like a riff on flicks such as NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN but without the seasoned storytelling chops.

Darkness & more darkness!

Borrowing heavily from some of the darkest writings of cult author Thomas Ligotti, this opening season of True Detective is truly excellent. I think it took me until maybe the third episode before I was completely hooked in, but I think it's because there's an awful lot of groundwork to be laid at the beginning. In fact, the first episode is almost exactly NOT what you'd want as an opener because there's a deluge of information dumped on you & a LOT of talking. But punch through and face the rewards! Both McConaughey & Harrelson started their careers doing goofy bit parts & now find themselves A-list actors. And to have them teamed up (and pitted against each other in some ways) together to solve a dark series of cult-related murders is pretty rad.

One of Mann's last great films (IMO)

With classics like HEAT, MANHUNTER, THIEF & LAST OF THE MOHICANS in his catalogue, it is somewhat dismaying that Michael Mann seems to be slipping in the last 10 years or so. One of the first big-name Hollywood directors to champion digital photography over film (alongside David Fincher), Mann seems to have allowed his sense of visual aesthetics to dwindle into amateurish TV-grade production levels since this, his first digital feature. MIAMI VICE was fun, but looked like doody at many points & I couldn't bring myself to watch PUBLIC ENEMIES because it looked like garbage. But I digress; COLLATERAL was/is fantastic! Tom Cruise is a new riff on his usual maniacal self & Jamie Foxx is excellent up against said mania. The disc is cheap & chock full of extras. And the storyline is kind of a further exploration of concepts in HEAT, concerning the communication and closeness of the good & bad guys...
