Outstanding, brain-busting action

George Miller arguably altered cinema by defining the "post-apocalyptic" look in his second Mad Max film, THE ROAD WARRIOR. FURY ROAD takes that ethos to extreme heights in this non-stop thrill ride. Well, almost non-stop, but a literal thrill-ride. We get a short break at the halfway point before diving back in, armed with somewhat nihilist idealism, if that's at all possible.

This set contains every episode from season five of The Walking Dead, the long-running AMC series starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick, a small-town Georgia cop who helps lead a band of survivors on a seemingly never-ending trek in search of a safe haven after a zombie epidemic has swept across the country.

More guts and gutrenching, as hoped for!

The Walking Dead is one of the few current TV shows I keep up with & except for the first season, I wait for the discs to come out as opposed to watching them as they air, so I can binge on 'em!
And as usual, when I was halfway through the last episode of 5, I said aloud, "c'mon, really? Don't tell me this is the last one..."
With the group reunited & breaking free from the oppressive Terminus situation, season 5 demonstrates very well why this show has longevity. The effects are great, especially the practical effects, but the story and characterization are the real gold. The classic archetypes of "man vs self" and "man vs man" far outweigh the zombie menace anymore. And the taste of "civilization" our gang finds in the second half truly exemplify this.
I think this season is even stronger than the last couple.

Offended parents and others protested the 1984 slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night when it was released because it portrays Billy (Robert Brian Wilson) as a toy-store Santa Claus who goes on a rampage and axes people to death while still in his Santa garb. Four sequels prove the adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity. When Billy was just a boy he saw someone dressed as Santa murder his parents at Christmastime. Billy's stint in an orphanage did nothing to unwarp his mind (he is tied to his bed for "misbehavior"), and when he starts playing Santa in the store -- much against his wishes since he is deathly afraid of both Christmas and Santa Claus, he first only frightens the children who come to see him. Then his mind snaps, and he repeats the scene he saw as a child, on one person after another, in full gory color. The original 1984 version and the 2012 reimagining of the cult classic starring Jaime King and Malcolm McDowell from Anchor Bay Films are collected in this special dual pack.

Classic slasher flick!

As a long-time fan of slasher movies & a child of the 80s, I didn't SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT until the early 2000s. And I couldn't believe I'd never watched it before. It has a perfectly nasty set-up story which makes for a legitimate case of psychosis. Then the accidental perfect storm that sets our "hero" loose on a crusade of punishing naughty children while wearing a Santa costume. And screaming "punish" a lot.
Charles Sellier, Jr.'s 1984 flick was brought under heavy fire when it came out as obscene & making a holy holiday into a twisted bloodbath. That only helped the popularity & notoriety of the movie.
Now enjoy this gem in HD with great extras.
Oh, and the second feature, SILENT NIGHT, has absolutely nothing to do with the main feature, except Christmas & horror.

Decent update of/homage to classic cult horror

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's 2014 TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN is half-remake & half-sequel. It seems that with all the remakes of the last 10 years or so, there are also appearing some prequels & sequels that simply bear the same name as the original. So that's pretty useless. Fortunately, the other one that comes to mind, THE THING, was a very competent, well-told prequel; certainly worth watching (especially if you chase it with John Carpenter's original). The movie in question here is a prequel that sets itself up as based on true events. Like the 70s original. But in this case, the original flick is referenced & the killer is wreaking havoc in present day Texarkana. He seems to be a copycat killer & the original TOWN is constantly being watched & shown. Seems like it might be pretty derivitive, I know. But thanks to fun appearances by genre favorites (Gary Cole, Ed Lauter, Veronica Cartwright, Edward Herrmann) & an entertaining enough mystery plot wherein our "final girl" obsessively attempts to find the identity of the killer, this version of THE THOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN works well enough to be quite fun!
My only complaint is the Scooby-Doo unveling scene, a sort of whimpy element that SCREAM seems to have left as an "important" element to slasher flicks; there's gotta be too much blah-blah-blah explanation from the deranged maniac. Know one cares.

Sixteen Candles On the eve of her sister's wedding, suburban teenager Samantha (Molly Ringwald) suffers silently as her family forgets her birthday. Even worse, some total dork (Anthony Michael Hall) keeps propositioning her with sophomoric innuendo when she really craves romantic attention from high-school hunk Jake (Michael Schoeffling). Moving from Samantha's family home as it's invaded by outre relatives to a high-school dance where nothing seems to go her way, this bittersweet teen comedy traces the hopes and disappointments of not only Samantha, but also a host of incidental but memorable characters, from a hapless Japanese exchange student to a prom queen and a posse of barely pubescent nerds. A climactic party scene at which these various strata of young America overcome their rigid hierarchies sets the stage for resolutions both tender and torrid. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi The Breakfast Club John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status. ~ Dylan Wilcox, Rovi Weird Science John Hughes's third directorial effort, Weird Science, follows in the tradition of his previous teen-centered films, Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play the wannabe hipster Gary and his nebbish weak-willed best friend, Wyatt, a pair of high-school geeks who are hapless with members of the opposite sex. Using Wyatt's computer, they create what they believe is the ideal woman. A lightning storm brings that woman to life, and she takes the form of Kelly Le Brock. Lisa sets about building their self-confidence, but trouble begins brewing when Wyatt's cruel, military-minded older brother, Chet (Bill Paxton), begins to realize that something is not as it should be. Hughes would finish his cycle of high-school themed films with his next movie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Maybe the best three in one HD package.

John Hughes was responsible for shaping a whole portion of 80s youth cinema with only a handful of teen comedies. Although FERRIS BUELLER is a great teen flick, I think these, Hughes' first three directorial efforts are the best. And packaged together with the Digital HD versions provides an awesome trip through the 80s with the teen romance of SIXTEEN CANDLES, the teen angst of BREAKFAST CLUB & the total excellence of WEIRD SCIENCE, my pick for best of the three.

Everything but the "real" versions...

Having grown up on the STAR WARS films, it is perhaps needless to say that I find Lucas' tampering with his own excellence totally unnecessary. I went to see the redux versions in theaters in the late 90s & was pleased enough, but will always love silly things like the Ewoks singing "Celebrate the Love" at the end of JEDI rather than a new age drum circle.
So I'm not a hater of these "new" versions, and I do understand Lucas when he explains that he prefers these versions AND, more importantly, it would cost millions to restore to HD standards the original trilogy, having already done so once with the new batch.
So knowing I'm not getting the OG editions, I wholeheartedly recommend this set as the finest edition these films will ever have for the home market.
And I'll never get rid of the shoddily presented original versions that were on the double-disc DVDs of episodes 4-6 as "bonus" features.

This special collection of Marvel's Iron Man franchise brings together all three films for the first time. The action-packed take on the tale of wealthy philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), who develops an invulnerable robotic suit to fight the throes of evil, is traced through the three Iron Man films, and this set contains tons of extras and behind the scenes features for fans of the wildly popular series.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark turned a comic book character that didn't interest me much into what I think are 3 of the most solid of Marvel's 21st century superhero flicks. They've hovered at a higher price for far too long.... Until now!

A modern 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Christopher Nolan's DARK KNIGHT trilogy (along with many his other films) has been among my favorite films of the 21st century. The darkness is as real as the buried human emotion. INTERSTELLAR is a fantastic film to break free from that storyline, and still deal with the darkness & light of the human heart. Hans Zimmer's score is haunting & beautiful, reminiscent of Philip Glass. The plot concerns the semi-fact-based search for a new place for humans to live once the Earth has officially been exhausted (or gotten rid of us). And very much like 2001, reaches a point of strange, surreal & psychedelic weirdness that you'll either love or hate, but could spawn some fun discussions.

Not EVER to be confused with the Michael Bay series (which in isdeed fun), Rick Rosenthal's 1983 juvenile delinquent flick is downright nasty. A must-see for fans of the dirty, violent films of the 1980s; ranking alongside CLASS OF 1984.

GRINDHOUSE double feature is better together!
on April 29, 2015

Just when it seemed like a healthy number of gritty grindhouse garbage was being regularly reissued on DVD, Tarantino & Rodriguez hit the big screen with a brand new dose of both spoof & homage to the way-out world of fantastic trash cinema. From the phony trailers by rad folks like Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie & Eli Roth to the appropriately "missing" reels in the middle of each flick, justice is surely done to the genres & sub-genres that were so educational to all the writer/directors involved. Even down to the point when Tarantino's DEATH PROOF starts to feel slow after the slam-bam of PLANET TERROR, which would be appropriate for the second feature on a double bill back in the 60s & 70s.
Made to enjoy!
