Great gaming laptop that looks respectable
on June 23, 2019

Despite the gaming moniker, the laptop (when closed) still can pass as a utility laptop which is important because I don't want my coworkers looking at me funny. That being said, when it's play time, it easily runs the Witcher 3 on max settings with only slight lag with multiple people on screen. Overwatch runs great and looks great as well. Can use the installed app to set your GPU to auto adjust, stay max performance, or conserve, and the app is easy to access.
Keyboard isn't as comfy as a 17 incher, but that's to be expected given the smaller real estate. The number pad is still plenty usable, and the travel on the keys are responsive.

entry level instant camera

I'm old enough to have used Polaroids before they were hipster-instagram-cool. Even compared to the original Polaroid film, the Zink printing quality leaves a ton to be desired. Think, VGA, old-school quality. The size of the photos are small enough to be considered wallet-size, but then the question remains, who even needs wallet photos any more? My iphone takes photos with infinitely better image quality, and I can view them in much higher resolution in a similar size as the Zink pics.
I think Canon was trying to jump into the instant film fad... except about 5 years too late. I really wanted to love this camera because I was really nostalgic about my old Polaroid hand-me-down from my dad, but after several days of use, I just can't find a good enough use case scenario where I grab this over my iphone.
Camera is well thought out, the app is easy to learn, on-board flash is there. All the basic necessities are checked off, but there's just no special factor that leads me to pick the Cliq+ up over my cell phone, a Sony a-6000, or even my Canon AE-1.

love these headphones
on May 10, 2019

Jabra makes solid products. I'm used to my buddy gripe about how a solid cable will transmit the purest sound quality, but let's face it, the days of carrying a dedicated music device are gone. My phone doesn't have a headphone jack, and no, carrying a dongle around for my headphones is not appealing to me.
The Jabra 85h offers surprisingly good sound quality. Grados these are not, but I say that about any wireless headphones/earbuds I've ever tried. Linking the headphones to my phone took no time at all using the app, and the settings are all easy to get to and change within the app.
There are a few presets, such as commuting mod where the headphones adopt a "pass-through" sound, basically like electronic earmuffs allowing conversations and some sound to be heard so you don't walk into incoming traffic. The private mode adopts the Jabra's noise canceling. And then there's a custom option where you can either have the headphones analyze your ambient noise and choose the best setting or you can personally customize it.
Phone call quality wasn't quite as crisp as the advertisement, but the noise canceling did help to isolate voice from the call, even in the presence of my toddler making his usual ruckus.
Good all-round headphones with close to the advertised battery life, easy to use app, and pretty comfortable ear cushions. I like these a lot.

the iphone cable Apple should have made
on April 6, 2019

As ubiquitous as Apple devices are, I'm sure everyone is painfully well aware of Apple's included extremely short, fragile, lightning cables. I'm OCD with everything, but still I find the cable fraying at the connecting point. The Belkin is amply long so I don't feel tethered to the corner of the room when charging my phone, and the braided material feels nice in the hand. The joint where the cable and the ends meet feel nice and beefy, so I expect this to be much more durable than the first party Apple cables.

Awesome dedicated baby monitor
on April 6, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
For our oldest, we tried several different baby monitors but ended up using an Arlo system as a monitor. Which worked well and we loved the video quality and ability to view the video feed from our phones anywhere. But for the second, we got the Nanit which is a different tool altogether. It's purely designed to function as a baby monitor, so it does its job very well, but you can't double it up as a room monitor from what I can tell. The stand looks like a sleek lampstand, so it fits in with the baby decor. The stand's designed to fix the camera to look directly down on your baby giving you a clear view of purely the baby. Sound quality is good, and everything feels nice and sturdy.
So if you want a monitor that can be versatile and used as the baby grows, then this isn't for you. But if you want the best baby monitor for the time period, then get this.

Great front, poor rear
on January 4, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
The V1P Plus is pretty similar to most of the other offerings in its price range, offering 1080P front camera... but the rear is inexplicably VGA. Think old school flash vids from the 90s. I can see why they'd want to differentiate between this mid-tier and their higher tier Pro model, but the difference in video quality comparing the front and rear cameras is so dramatic that it's hard to recommend this particular model. If you really don't need a rear cam, then this is a great value. The installation itself was fine, as there are thankfully multiple Youtube videos on how to wire the cam to your car's fusebox, or you can just plug into the 12v DC outlet.
Given the blistering quality of phone screens which we look at several times a day, trying to look at the rear cam footage is pretty painful. With that caveat, the overall quality and specs of the Plus are adequate for everyday use.

Embellish your device with a functional attachment by using this black Speck GrabTab phone accessory. It~s compatible with most brands and cases, and the card-sized, flat design slips smoothly into your pocket. Use the hanging loop on this Speck GrabTab phone accessory as a grip for a secure hold or as a kickstand for hands-free viewing.

Excellent idea, not as excellent in usage
on January 4, 2019

Disclaimer, despite my negative sounding header, I'm actually using this on my phone now. I used to use a Popsocket, as with the continued increase in phone size by all makers, it's becoming extremely inconvenient to use phones one handed. The one drawback to the Popsocket was that the bulk, even when collapsed, interfered with the phone sitting stably in my car mount. The Speck folds down completely flat, so the bulk is minimal. Which I thought would fix all my problems.
My main issue with the Speck is that when open/deployed, the loop it creates is a little too large to fit snugly on my finger. Therefore I still have to adjust my grip to get the perfect balance of grip and non-hand-cramping strain. It's still lightyears better than trying to text onehanded without it, and the fact that it can fit into my car mount makes up for the non-ideal finger loop.

Wireless gaming mouse that delivers
on January 4, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
If you're looking specifically for a gaming mouse, then you've no doubt heard of Razer. They make solid peripherals, and the wireless Mamba is no exception. My previous go-to mouse was actually a wired Mamba, so I may be a bit biased. I don't play MMOs, so I don't really need all the extra buttons that come with the Naga. Highly responsive, and being able to play wirelessly is nice as the long cords can get annoying on a smaller space.
Nothing new, just good old Razer reliability and functionality.

excellent shaver
on January 4, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
Have been eyeing electric razors for a while now, but old habits die hard as I've used disposable razors since I was in the military. No tears shed if my bag is stolen, and I could just toss a couple extras if I knew I was going somewhere.
Having switched now, I don't think I could ever go back. Being able to dry shave when I'm late getting ready for work is amazing. The waterproof nature of this razor means you can use it in the shower for even more convenience.
The triple blade design works well, and I've not experienced any negatives with this shaver at all. The rechargeable battery lasts long enough that I don't find myself getting annoyed at having to recharge.
Highly recommend.
