You sank my Battleship

At first, I thought it was a Transformers clone with all of the action scenes, CGI and the requisite female lead with all looks and no acting ability. Some of that is true here, but its better than the Transformer films because it has a better director (Peter Berg) frantic, but well shot action scenes and some cool alien designs and CGI. Other than that, you get the star who Hollywood forces us to see (Thankfully better than Sam Worthington and disappeared just as fast), a fairly too-long film and an ending that they thought would lead to a franchise. It looks pretty but thats about it and only get it if its cheap and on Blu Ray. The PQ is fantastic for DVD, with nice detail, crisp imagery and nice use of colors (The Hawaii scenes in the mountains are beautiful) are all resolved in standard definition quite well and appear near HD on a HDTV. The sound is also loud and detailed and accurate and if this were 2005, demo worthy, but as on DVD, its second class to its HD cousin. The extras only included a few feauturettes and thats about it. Really only buy if its cheap and/or need a blockbuster action fest to satisfy your needs.

Just a show stopper of a movie

The movie that lost Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love. *sigh*. Anyways, the landmark war film is finally out in HD and it stands as one of the best films ever and one of the best Blu Ray's ever (And DVD.... laserdisc if it was released for that format...) that rightfully earns a place on your shelf at all costs. I am not even going to go over the film because everyone knows about already with the iconic 20 minute opening scene, the use of color that has become synonymous with the film and widely praised as the best war film ever made. It has gone above and beyond the call of duty to deliver some of the best PQ of all time on a Blu Ray disc, replicating the gritty grain structure, muted color palate, and amazing detail to each and every frame displayed across your TV. The sound mix is equally stunning, making you believe the taking of Omaha Beach is happening 10 ft. away from you. The extras are plentiful, and are on the second disc to give plenty of room to the film itself on disc one. Included is a full length documentary about WWII itself and how it was captured on film throughout the course of the war, an intro by Spielberg, several making of featurettes and a series of trailers. Go out and buy this now, no matter how much or format. It belongs in your home.

It Doesn't Suck...

Disaster movies usually have large casts, windbag dialogue, tons of spectacle and some groundbreaking special effects. Twister doesn't reinvent the wheel, but instead, it becomes the wheel. It relishes in the tropes of yesteryear, and it works for the most part. There are actors (Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, etc.), there is a screenplay (Co-written by Michael Crichton) and there is direction (Jan de Bont, former DP and director of Speed) but the main draw is the effects. Is there a reason why the original poster has a giant Twister on it with Micro Machine-sized actors in the corner running away? Its not for the exciting plot about Meteorologists launching a data collector in a tornado, and some very bad dialogue thats for sure. Yes, the CG is almost 20 years old but man does it still look good and still draws me in every time I watch it. If anything, just skip the "plot" scenes and relish into the destruction of the Southwest. The PQ and AQ are pretty decent, but the PQ needs a major 4K remaster (20th anniversary Diamond Luxe edition Warner Bros. please?) and a nice sound remaster would be icing on a cake, but sounds just fine right as it is now. The extras are carried over from the 2001 special edition and the 2-disc DVD edition with a nice commentary by Jan de Bont and Special Effects Supervisor Stefen Fangmeier which offers details about the groundbreaking CGI, concepts for the film, acting choices and more. 2 featurettes include the HBO EPK making-of and a retrospective and a History Channel documentary about tornadoes are included along with two trailers and the music video to the awesome Van Halen song "Humans Being" complete this average selection of extras. Recommended totally!

Machete don't suck

Robert Rodriguez started off with a bang in his directorial career, with El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk 'til Dawn and more filling his rapidly expanding resume. Then around 2001 things started to change. I knew from the get go he wore many hats while making his films, but around Spy Kids I noticed he started to cater more to a childrens audience and spread himself too thin, taking on Writer,Director,Editor,Composer,Conductor,Visual Effects,Producing,Camera Operator,Sound Designer,Sound Editor,Cinematographer, and Production Designer on most of his films. Yes, he does produce a modestly budgeted film (nothing over $40 million usually) but taking on too much responsibility, you start to lose focus on story and direction and quality. Most of the films he made since have been either terrible kid films or some huge letdowns (Sin City and Grindhouse notwithstanding) that makes me take each of his films with a grain of salt. Machete was first in the aforementioned Grindhouse as a fake trailer, but it soon grew into cult status and thus we have today Machete. I do enjoy B-movies, and this screams B-movie to a fault. The film is intentionally exploitative (Mexsploitation?) and loaded with ultraviolent deaths and action scenes filled with gore, grit and a toothy grin on my face. No its not perfect, but Danny Trejo is Machete (!!!) and just kills it, with the rest of the cast being a mix of either good to why are they here. Its not a return to form, but it made me smile ear to ear and satisfied my B-movie cravings. The PQ & AQ are well done with the PQ being sharp and crisp (With the first few minutes being digitally altered to look like film with scratches and etc.) with the digitally shot feature offering detail brimming with sun baked buildings, clothing exceptionally detailed and Trejo's craggled face disturbingly detailed. The audio is filled with loud and detailed gunfights, explosions, dialogue and surround sound goodness. The extras though.... after seeing almost every Rodriguez DVD and Blu Ray offer tons of high quality extras (Sin City being his best DVD/Blu Ray) its a sad trend that only a few extras make it on the DVD. All there is are some deleted scenes and trailers with a digital copy on a separate DVD. No commentary, no Ten Minute Film School, no making-of's or featurettes of any kind. Still, if you can get it for around $10 (Hopefully less), you will get a fun movie, with great specs and disappointing extras.

To remake or not to remake... Not to remake.
on September 26, 2015

Another day, another remake Hollywood decided to make and dump on the fans of the original. Granted some remakes are decent in their own right (The Hills Have Eyes), most outright stink (Too many to list) and there are those very few that manage to match or even exceed the original (The Thing). Sadly, but predictably, this film is one of the unneeded but still fairly decent and diverting for 90 minutes. Sam Raimi's original, while not my favorite nor is it "scary", is a classic horror film with Raimi's unique style and humor with some very gruesome scenes such as a scene where one of the characters gets.... let's say gets real acquainted with a tree. The best part of the film is the hero, Ash played by horror icon Bruce Campbell. The remake pretty much fails to offer anything as good as the original. I do like the nice visuals, the largely practical blood and special effects, and some of the kills are fairly inventive as well. Sadly, the script pretty much steals most of the original story beats (Old cabin holding the Necrominicon, some of kills of the first, etc.) and the characters are very, very STUPID. Stick with the original and only watch out of slight curiosity and probably purchase if its like $5 or less. The PQ is filmed on modern digital cameras and is too smooth for my taste (The original's 16mm photography is terrific and pitch perfect in my books) but does look quite nice with awesome detail of the all the gore, landscapes, actors and sets. The audio is also fantastic with nice bass, great directionality in scenes and natural sounding dialogue. The extras, while not as plentiful as the much re-released films of the previous films, does have some nice extras for fans. The commentary is the best extra with the cast, director and co-writer offering up nice info about how the script came to be, background about the film, behind the scenes info and more, while nothing earth-shattering is a good listen. 5 featurettes, and previews for other Sony films and a UV copy complete the nice extras package, though a feature-length documentary could have been awesome (If you have the BBY exclusive, which sadly, I do not, offers a bonus disc with an interview with Ash himself and a featurette about the special effects). All in all, a nice package for a decent movie, but only buy if its part of the Savestation sale or around $10 or less.

A side dish to the Cornetto trilogy

Edgar Wright is one of the best directors of modern films; a master of comedy, action and all around terrific and exciting filmmaker. Attack the Block is not a Wright film, with Joe Cornish actually directing, who is best known for writing Little Britain and appearing in Hot Fuzz & Shawn of the Dead (Wright exec. produces this film), and for the life of me it could very well be Wright's film and thats a great thing. This film is about a group of impoverished South Londoners who live in government housing whose "block" have been invaded by aliens and must team up to prevent them from taking over the world. Fast, funny, tightly paced (88 minutes long!) and a great debut from first-timer Cornish and is not only a must watch, but a must buy! The PQ and AQ on the Blu Ray is fantastic, with the film retaining its 35mm sheen and grain, and having fantastic detail and shadow detail (Mostly a dark film) and the audio having a major field day with its varied soundfield of explosions, directional effects and spot on dialogue levels. The extras though, are fantastic and worth the price alone, which is very cheap nowadays. Starting off are 3 (!) commentaries by a mix of various cast & crew members that almost never overlap information, are full of interesting anecdotes and are absolute must listens. Also of note is a 101 minute making-of documentary which is longer than the film itself and filled with comprehensive info about casting choices, film locations, and some nice raw behind the scenes. Also included are four feauturettes, trailers and BD-Live functionality. At the price the Blu Ray is at BBY, $9.99 its worth it by itself, but the Savestation sales are the best to grab this modern, overlooked classic. Must buy all the way!!!!!

Not the Wedding Crashers I know....

Yes, this is that 2 hour Google advert, with the director of the Night at the Museum trilogy and starring the Wedding Crashers.... Not truly the best sign of things. I love Google, I like most of Shawn Levy's films though he doesn't blow me away with his efforts but does good work, and the Wedding Crashers is probably one of the most overrated comedies of the last ten years or so. I wasn't looking forward to it, and to my surprise it isn't that bad of a film. The best part of Wedding Crashers was the chemistry between Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn and it still holds strong here, but the screenplay needed a bit of work. Its the usual underdog film where they are salesmen who lose their job, only to get internships at Google though they know nothing about technology. So of course, they are set up with a ragtag bunch of computer geeks who must take on their stronger, better, smarter rivals and win jobs. Predictable to a fault, with a shoehorned love story and the accustomed growing mutual respect between the team and you have every other film ever made about underdogs. Still, it made me laugh, and was well acted with some solid direction, but it does drag in the middle and could have been trimmed to a solid 90 minutes or so instead of the 110 minute mark, but its still a good watch, just not a full price movie. The DVD PQ & AQ is of course strong, with a good stable and sharp picture (Digitally shot, style of choice Levy since Date Night) and the standard comedy soundtrack that has dialogue loud and clear and distortion free. Only the Blu Ray could be better. The extras are a let down, at least on the DVD but whats included is good. The main extra is the commentary by Levy, and as usually, is a very chatty commentator, who talks about how he got the gig, film locations, etc, things like that. A good listen for those who enjoy commentaries. The other major extra is the unrated cut, that includes a few scenes that could have worked in the film had it went for an R-rating, which it should have. Other than that, nothing else of note and must buy the Blu Ray to access the rest of the extras (A featurette and some deleted scenes and a few other odds and ends) and is at least worth a rental.

Borderlands seems kind of derivative at the point it was released, with it taking place in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world, with some RPG elements and some terrific gameplay. Like Fallout, but with some originality with the characters, fun gameplay elements and some beautiful cel-shading graphics. Tons of fun on whatever system you play it on, and is also extremely cheap nowadays, but this is the best edition of it since it comes with all of the DLC from the game at a low cost. Totally play it at least once and you will thank me!

Sweet 90s nostalgia finally on DVD!

Growing up in the 90s, Tiny Toon Adventures is pretty much ingrained into every kid who came home after school, slipped off their shoes and flipped the channel to watch this classic cartoon every weekday afternoon. Of course watching it continuously in my youth well into the 90s up to my late 20's, I have come across How I Spent My Vacation quite a few times over the years. I remember just watching this for a hour and a half watching Buster & Babs rafting down a river, Plucky & Hamton travelling on the road to a theme park and other fun vignettes of summer travel, with a big grin, laughing a load and securing a place in the annals of my personal Hall of Nostalgia. Of course wanting to own it, I tried for years to find an OOP VHS copy, but was selling past $30, so had to do my best with some clips on YouTube and reruns on occasion on some 90s retro block. Finally, Warner Bros. came to their senses and released this classic special on DVD and finally satisfied my craving of the past two decades. Of course I wasn't expecting a full blown release of this, but the PQ does leave a lot to be desired. It does look ok, but this needs a nice remaster to make it excellent, and not just merely adequate. The audio is your standard 2.0 track and nothing major of note although in the scene in the theater where T.H.U.D. plays sounds pretty nice as I remember it. The extras only include trailers for other WB products which disappoints considering this was a big success on TV and on video (Was even planned for cinemas at one point) and could have included a commentary, a retrospective or etc. Sigh, at least it satisfies my nostalgia and love of all things 90s and was extremely cheap!

Dead or Alive You're going to buy this BluRay!!!!

Finally, is all I can say. Yes, Robocop has been on Blu Ray for close to ten years at this point, but the first release was a huge letdown. Muddy visuals, good audio but no extras was pretty much a slap to the face of the fans even though the exact same time there was a superior release on DVD(!) with a commentary, documentaries, a mix of old and new featurettes and the theatrical and unrated cuts across 2 discs. Well, this release rights all the wrongs with all those extras plus some new extras, great audio and a terrific 4K remaster which is grainy (Hey, it was shot on film and in the 80's when it was shot so don't go in wanting something in line of The Avengers: Age of Ultron or anything) but detailed and just plain awesome. The audio is also outstanding with the 5.1 DTS-HD being amazing while losing the lossy 4.0 surround option from the original Blu Ray being the only downside. The extras are all carried over from the trilogy DVD box set and the 2007 2-disc edition with the exception of a trailer and a photo gallery plus a new Q&A lasting nearly 45 minutes. The commentary is a must listen to with director Paul Verhoeven, co-writer Ed Neumeier and producer Jon Davison delivering some laughs, production details, origins of the film and so on. The documentaries and featurettes are also quite good with some touching upon production, special effects, making of the suit, and more. There are also some brief deleted scenes, a trailer and a tv spot. The biggest and only new feature is the Q&A which does talk about some material already covered, but the other interviews are worth a listen. In fact, the only gripes I have, and very minor at that, is the lack of the other trailer and photo gallery being left out, along with the original audio track and the biggest being the lack of the theatrical cut being the biggest omissions. Still, its very cheap to get and is a must own of all fans Robocop!
