A Star Trek sequel that doesn't suck

Let me just say this first, too much lens flare. Now that's out if the way,STID is a fun action packed film, with a great cast and a terrific villain in Khan, in a great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. Still, was disappointed that Abrams lied about it being not like Wrath of Khan, but at least this film is great! The picture and audio quality is top of the line demo material, and a 3D release that is among the better up conversion s out there, and great sound field to get lost in for days. The extras, on the other hand, were botched from the get go, with different stores getting exclusives that was a cheap ploy to get us to buy every version to get everything. This BBY exclusive has some nice featurettes, and the standard bluray release also has some nice featurettes, but you had to buy a version from target for a bonus disc of featurettes, an Xbox live version for some deleted scenes and a featurette or two and an iTunes version for the commentary. Thank God the Compendium set includes almost everything from those releases except the Xbox Live material.

World War Z

I remember reading about the major script rewrites, complete reshooting of the 3rd act, budget overruns, confiscation of prop guns, and internal feuding with Brad Pitt and Marc Forster and all of this spells disaster for the film. Sure, the studio tacked on some pretty good 3D, but I felt this was just a tactic to make as much money as possible while taking a big loss. Surprisingly, this film was a huge hit, got some considerable critical acclaim and was the rare exception of a big hit from a mess of a production. It is a good movie, only sparingly using Max Brooks novel as a template, with some good acting, nice VFX and some tense scenes with the ending being a bit of a letdown. All things considered though, a good time at the movies and glad the studio has decided to film a sequel. The picture quality and audio is really good, but sometimes the image looks a little soft, but the audio is intense and loud, just how it should be. The extras are pretty much featurettes, with a good BBY exclusive featurette really good, but only the Unrated cut is in HD, and yet again you either have to buy the 3D set or use the DVD included here to watch the theatrical cut.

Retired, and still Extremely Dangerous

The sequel to the surprise hit RED is finally here, and let's just say its as good as the first film. I love the cast assembled here and they have a blast, and the script is fun and funny, and has some great action as well. I just wish Willis would put more effort into his newer work, but still glad he works. The picture quality and audio quality is simply great. The extras are the only downfall, with a few featurettes, deleted scenes and a gag reel to tide you over. The BBY exclusive does have a good exclusive cast roundtable interviews that is well worth the extra cost.

Stallone becomes country singer...

The header pretty much sums it up. Yes, on a bet to get out of a contract, Parton must turn the next person she sees as a country music star or else extend her contract indefinitely. Surprisingly, its not as terrible as it sounds, with a few funny bits and such, but when he starts singing.... Well at least he had fun making the movie I guess. The acting is okay, bur with a nice cast and a good director behind the lens I expected more. The DVD has okay picture, but with some grain spikes in darker scenes, and the audio pretty good but nothing special but the lack of extras, even a trailer, is a big letdown.

"The Great Gatsby.. Well he was.. uhh.. Great!"

Sorry, my Rodney Dangerfield is showing, but with this film, Gatsby was indeed, great. The performances were pretty good and the story pretty much followed the book, and Luhrmann always intrigues me as a filmmaker, but the choice to have Jay-Z do the music and filming this in 3D is extremely odd at best. Still, this film is really good with the DVD PQ and AQ decent, but the BluRay is where the movie truly shines. The extras are fairly plentiful if short, with some good making of featurettes, but Luhrmann should have provided a commentary, a lengthy making-of or at least a picture in picture track like WB's other films with Maximum Movie Mode. Still, the DVD and extras are decent enough for a price under $10.

Shark.... Shark.... Sharknado!!!!

It had me with "Sharknado". Yes, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus had a so stupid it's brilliant name and was a huge pile of fecal matter, but Sharknado just nails it. Yes,it is filled with poor acting, sublevel writing, and direction that isn't there and continuity mistakes that make you think your going crazy, but that adds to the charm of this flick. Its just a fun movie that I'm glad has garnered a huge cult, and a film series to boot. The picture quality is flat and glossy, status quo for The Asylum, with some good details but no filmic texture st all. The sound was decent but nothing that'll rattle the walls, even when the Sharknado hits, which is disappointing. Surprisingly, there are a few extras, including an audio commentary, a short featurette, a gag reel and a DVD copy exclusive with this BBY exclusive. All in all, a fun movie for a cheap price that deserves a spot in your movie collection, if only to say you own Sharknado!

A really good action film, and a great sequel....

I remember watching the first G.I. Joe film back in 2009, and remember being indifferent to it. Channing Tatum back then was a poor actor in what I seen him in (Step Up, Dear John, etc.) and his performance in the first one was bland as all get out, along with everyone else except Marlon Wayans (even besting Joseph Gordon-Levitt) being mediocre, a mediocre script with a meh story, and just being an uninspired flick. I didn't have too high hopes, seeing they hired Jon M. Chu, who had done two Step Up films and the Bieber documentary, and Channing Tatum back as Duke, and I was just crushed. Then, Tatum had a stellar comeback and proved that he can act and surprised us in The Vow, Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street. The Rock also starred in this film and when the trailer was released, I instantly said, "Must see G.I. Joe II". Then, 3 weeks before the film was released, it was delayed til March 2013. I was upset and thought maybe to give Tatum more scenes, but then I read on the news header 3D up conversion. Still, I was stoked, kept seeing more trailers, the half time clip during the Super Bowl keeping me enticed. Finally seeing the film, my instincts were correct and I had a great time with this film. Fun action, charismatic performance from The Rock, good story and surprisingly good 3D. This film is everything the first one should have been, which is a lean mean action film that doesn't indulge in back story, and had the Joes with no exosuits. The picture quality is terrific as is the fast and furious (*wink*) soundtrack and is easily a show off disc for your set up. This BBY exclusive includes the Unrated Action Cut, which add around 10 minutes of length but around 25 minutes of new footage, and offers nearly an hour of extras, but doesn't include the theatrical cut (The DVD included with the set contains this cut) and the extras that disc has. If you want the full package, which includes a couple of extra featurettes and the commentary, pick up both sets, because they both are recommended.

A nicely dark, humurous storybook retelling...

A lot of reimaginings have been going for the past few years, Cinderella, Oz: The Great and Powerful and more films Disney is remaking live action and earning billions, and its totally uninspired and boring. I thought the same when I saw trailers for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, despite an R rating and produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McCay, I passed on it until it hit Redbox. Wish I hadn't because this film surprised me with some fun action, good acting and loads of style. The story isn't anything to write home about, but I dig how Hansel has diabetes from all that candy the witch fed him years ago, the whole bounty hunter feel, and love the style this film has. The picture quality is sharp as a tack, and the audio is a nicely loud action track filled with directional effects, LFE and plenty of clarity. The extras are unfortunately slim, with just a few featurettes to tide you over, with the BBY exclusive featurettes a nice bonus, but the problem is that only the unrated cut is in HD. Unless you get the 3D BluRay, you'll have to live with the theatrical cut on the included DVD, which is okay but sub par compared to the BluRay.

Decent comedy with a decent BluRay...

Melissa McCarthy solidified her A-List status with this film, which is a pretty decent film with a few good dramatic beats, but nothing more than this. A good cast is the best this film has, which has some characters on here that are superfluous and could have been deleted entirely, a mediocre screenplay and decent but nothing more direction. The picture, shot digitally, has a filmic sheen in most scenes with some shots looking flat and glossy which is a byproduct of digital, but still looks good. The audio is lively with some nice surround use, nice LFE with car crashes and music, but doesn't stretch too far beyond typical comedy soundtrack. Decent extras like a few featurettes, deleted scenes, a gag reel and an unrated cut are nice to have, but could have used a more BTS look including documentaries or commentary, but still happy that I got this for under $10. Anything more is highway robbery or in this films case, identity theft.

Underrated

I remember back in 2012, hearing Tom Cruise producing and starring in a film called Jack Reacher, based on a book series I've never heard of, and being totally nonplussed by it. I became more intrigued when Christopher McQuarrie was directing, who wrote his Oscar winning film The Usual Suspects as well as directing his debut film, the cult classic The Way of the Gun. Seen the trailers, looked good, car chase looked pretty good, but skipped in theaters only to say I'll Netflix it or something. When it released on bluray, I didn't get it immediately, waited for the U&S (BTW BBY, where is the U&S at? We need those coupons!!!!!) and wasn't disappointed in the least. I love the acting, the writing, direction, action and music to death. It gave off vibes of dirty Harry and The Silence of the Lambs with a Bullitt type car chase that deserves a spot in top car chases ever filmed. The picture and audio quality is top notch, with the extras a slight disappointment, with two commentaries and a couple of featurettes the only extras. The BBY exclusive also has a CinemaNow featurette on the car chase, which if you have the means, I highly recommend.
