The rocks crumble with... The Rock!!!!

Its been a few years since I've seen a really good disaster movie, since around 2004 with The Day After Tomorrow landed in theatres (2012 was good to an extent, and Sharknado doesn't count), and this one is probably the best one since Independence Day for sure. A good cast with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson leading the charge with very impressive results, some spectacular visuals with the earthquake and aftershocks, and some great stunt work. The Blu Ray helps in the enjoyment with a pitch perfect 1080p picture and Dolby Atmos (Listened it in 5.1 but still rocks the foundation) that's deep and bassy enough to register on the Richter scale. The extras, while not expansive, fill up enough of the gap to satisfy most fans, starting with the commentary. Brad Peyton's track, his very first, is very detailed and eloquently told, with some wonderful BTS stories and production details to pique interest. The BBY exclusive does include over a half hour of BTS featurettes along with the standard featurettes, and they cover some ground, though nothing groundbreaking (Pun not intended) and nothing compared to a feature length making-of, but does solid work. Some nice deleted scenes with optional commentary, a gag reel, a DVD copy with decent PQ/AQ and the commentary, the UV digital copy and an exclusive lenticular slipcover wrap up this beautiful, but fairly shallow package. Not worth $24.99, but $20 and less is a fine price point for demo worthy PQ/AQ and limited extras. Recommended but to an extent.

A welcome return to form for Bryan Singer

X-Men: First Class was a return to form for the series, hanging critically low in the balance with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, not being the most well liked film, but Matthew Vaughn brought it back with a film filled with a mod look and a lot of (wait for it!) CLASS. The Wolverine was very well done, but Days of Future Past stands as probably one of the best X-Men films, and comic book films in general. I love the mixture of the older and younger versions of most of the characters with an awesome story and some of the most believable time travel elements since Back to the Future. Can't wait for Apocalypse to arrive next year is all I'm saying and you should be equally excited as well! The PQ is of course outstanding being a modern day blockbuster shot on the best digital cameras out there (Arri Alexa), with the natively shot 3D being truly amazing. The 2D image is also amazing, being extremely sharp and detailed, deep colors, and just perfect in every way. The AQ is equally astonishing, being loud and clear, terrific surround sound use and is also perfect in every way. The only low point is the extras, but given how months before this released there was going to be a Rogue Cut with more extras and commentaries, but whats included here is very nice and exclusive to this set. No extras on the 3D disc, but the main disc holds 5 featurettes averaging around 8-10 minutes a piece, deleted scenes with optional Singer commentary, 5 minutes of outtakes, galleries, trailers and a Second-Screen App feauture to run on your phone or tablet. The BBY exclusive holds some exclusive packaging along with a packet of exclusive character cards. Not too shabby, but with the Rogue Cut containing commentaries, documentaries, theatrical cut, and more, that is your best bet. Be noted the Rogue Cut lacks a 3D option, so choose wisely.

A gorgeous artistic triumph, but that's about it..

I'll say it, but a lot of Disney's early work is, to say the least, not my favorite period of their company. Sure, they are beautiful films, but it wasn't til around the 1960's when they really got some amazing films. Sleeping Beauty and most of their output lack a truly gripping and well told story with terrific characters and originality. Still, it is a classic film that is one of my favorites from this era that needs to be on everyone's shelves. The PQ, sourced from 70mm photography, is meticulously detailed and colored, with some beautiful artwork in the fore and background being impeccably drawn and inked. The AQ is also well done, with the expanded 7.1 DTS-HD track enveloping the viewer with a tremendous score, sound effects and dialogue coming in beautifully. And for the purist (such as I) it also includes the 4.0 quadraphonic stereo track which also sounds amazing. The extras are where it starts to get a bit less worth your money. in 2009, there was an anniversary edition released, across 2 Blu Rays and one DVD filled with hours of extras ranging from games to documentaries, and with this Diamond Edition dropping a Blu Ray, you know something is lost in translation. The bonuses not included are 6 documentaries and featurettes, a Cine-Explore in-Movie experience, a trivia track, 3 deleted songs, an alternate opening, 4 games and more. So what is left over? Thankfully, there is a mix of old and new extras, with the new ones being 3 deleted scenes (in HD!), 3 featurettes and a sing-along. The retained extras include the fantastic commentary by Leonard Maltin, supervising animator Andreas Deja & John Lassetter, a featurette about the film restoration, a featurette on Eyvind Earle & a making of documetary rounding off the extras, with a DVD and a digital code also included in the package. A total recommendation for film enthusiasts, Disney fans and young kids (and the kid in all of us) and worth every penny, though still track down the 2008 release, its also superb as well.

Probably the best horror film of all time.

This wasn't made to cash in on a horror trend or just a copy and paste movie that's exactly like everything else. No, no.... this is the horror trend, probably one of the most influential films of all time. Not bad considering it was a low-budget film, shot in the springtime (The leaves were from the previous fall!) with a virtually unknown cast and crew, with Donald Pleasance being the most known, but what it lacked in finances, it made up for it in spades with great direction, great acting, a taut screenplay and Dean Cundey's impressive cinematography all ad up to being a legendary film. The PQ is very nice, which includes a widescreen and fullscreen version (Stay away from the 4x3 version!) which has nice details, film grain and colors but the grain tends to spike (Maybe compression related due to 2 versions and extras on one side of the DVD) during dark scenes. The AQ is very nice with a nice 5.1 track which expands on the original mono track, which is also included here along with a 2.0 surround sound track. The extras are fairly slim here, considering the multiple versions of the DVD n BluRay out, which contain commentaries, documentaries, deleted scenes and then some. Included here is a 27-min. making of, trailer, tv spots, biographies, radio spot, and galleries. All in all, a decent DVD release, but there are far superior Blu Ray & DVD releases out there, but for $5 and under, it'll fill your horror hunger sufficiently.

As I have stated in my Epic DVD review, I stated that Blu Sky has only made mediocre films for the most part, never excelling with their look, stories or heart, all copycatting from other films. The trend continues with Rio 2 and I'm not even going to mention too much about the film because its pretty much a mix other other better films with some mild humor and, admittedly, beautiful animation and great 3D but other than that, only for kids. The PQ as I stated above, is outstanding, with beautiful colors, details in the back, mid and foregrounds and a 3D that literally pops off your TV. As delicious as the picture is the Samba-spiced sound and terrific use of sounds, music and dialogue mixed beautifully. The extras are once again disappointing, but still nice nonetheless. The 3D BluRay has a 3D deleted scene, with the 2D Blu Ray and DVD containing the bulk of the supplements. There is the same deleted scene, a Rio refresher (Its a rundown of the story so far..), 5 featurettes, art gallery, music video, a multi-language feature, and trailers, with the DVD and UV code rounding out the package. I only recommend this to kids, 3D fanatics or fans of these films, other than that stay away!

This is the end... Until James Bond Returns...

SkyFall was stupidly hyped back in 2012, correlating with the 2012 Summer Olympics, with a short film directed by Danny Boyle and starring Daniel Craig as Bond and Her Majesty, the Queen as herself doing a little flyover London before skydiving out of a helicopter, a Bond 50 bluray set releasing 9 new Bond films not before available on Blu Ray and of course the diamond anniversary of the Bond films themselves. They got a great director, awesome singer for the title, Roger Deakins to shoot the film and a great actor for the villain. A lot to live up to, but I have to hand it to the Bond crew, this is one of the best films of the series, filled with exciting action sequences, great performances and a great sendoff of a major part of the film series for years. Recommended that everyone needs to own a copy on DVD or Blu Ray, just to have a classic on your shelves. The PQ is stunning with some beautifully shot sequences, vivid colors, and a great filmic look for the most part (Shot digitally for the first time in the series) provided by Deakins and totaly worthy of an Oscar nomination (A win should have been clear cut, but Life of Pi had to ruin the fun). The AQ is equally impressive, with Adele's title tune, actions sequences, the evocative score and dialogue all heard loud and clear and bass-y. The extras on the DVD disappoint, only containing a few featurettes, with the Blu Ray holding 2 commentaries, an hour of extras, and an intro to the red carpet premiere in London. All in all, a big recommendation for anyone fans of films!!!

Poor Blue Sky. Trying to roll with Pixar and Dreamworks and all I can say is, its very cute but they don't try too hard to be as good as their films. Ice Age was cute, but Robots, Ice Age 2-4, Rio 1 & 2 being fairly lackluster with my only favorite being Horton Hears a Who out of all those films. I thought that they have changed when they released Epic in theaters, but then I watched it. I liked it, thought it looked nice enough, some nice animation but then a growing sense of familiarity struck me. It kept growing and growing then I said, "This is Fern Gully!". It literally is, a shrunken hero (Gender reversed though with the girl being shrunken this time), forest setting, ecological based plot, animal friends and a good cast. Only difference is this is CG animation compared to 2D cel animation. Other than that, its an okay film, and only recommended for animation film fans or kids. The PQ is rather nice, going from digital format to digital format, retaining the detail and sharpness the film has, only in DVD format. The AQ is equally nice, but yet again, rendered down to DVD scale, but still active and lively. The extras are fairly mediocre with a few kid-based extras and a trailer rounding out the extras. Only buy if you want a modern day Fern Gully and if its $5-$10 and only then on 3D or 2D Blu Ray.

A cop and an FBI agent star in a movie....

Paul Feig has become one of the major comedy directors at this time, after one or two failed starts with movies (I Am David and Unaccompanied Minors both flopped, but his TV work his second to none) before striking gold with Bridemaids and continuing his success with The Heat. If you love comedy movies, action movies, buddy movies or just movies in general you will love this film. Sure, it does follow the buddy action formula to a T (Authority figures with different styles, predictable bad guy reveal, etc.) but the humor is so well done and the chemistry and acting by Melissa McCarthy & Sandra Bullock are top notch. Not one to miss at all! The PQ on the DVD is nice looking, with nice details, accurate colors and a nice film grain veneer with the AQ being terrific as well handling the dialogue, music and action extremely well. The extras are fairly nice, headlined with a commentary with director Paul Feig, an intro to the extras, a featurette and some funny outtakes round out the nice amount of extras. If you can spring for it, get the Blu ray, with an unrated cut, 4 extra commentaries, deleted scenes, more outtakes and featurettes, along with a DVD & UV copy. All in all, recommended, no matter which format you choose!

Motorola Moto G No-Contract Cell Phone for Verizon: This phone's screen stays protected from everyday scratches and bumps, great for someone who is busy with work or play. Listen to FM stations when out and about, and stay prepared by creating a hotspot for other devices wherever needed.

A great pre-paid phone for under $100

I remember hearing how awesome this phone was back in 2013, saying its the best prepaid phone for under $200 (For the GSM model with 16GB) and was watching and reading reviews, showing off the sleek design, real and front facing cameras, a nice quad-core processor, Gorilla Glass 3 screen, and a 720p display and with an upgrade to KitKat 4.4 right out of the box! So I gladly laid my money down, and bought this lovely phone, and haven't looked back. Sure, it isn't as good as a Galaxy S6 or HTC One, and it lacks a removable battery and a SD card slot (This is the 1st Gen model and only has 8GB) but nothing DropBox and a Micro USB flash drive can't fix! I recommend going to the 2015 model, but this will do in a pinch! The battery life alone is enough to grab the Moto G!! You won't be disappointed!!!

Cheese has a new name... BARBARELLA!!!

Yes, if you are lovers of anything cheese, made by the finest Hollywood cows, then you are in for a special treat! Even though this film is pretty bad, in a good way, but its also fairly influential, mainly through my constant viewings of the Austin Powers films, with some of the set design, look, feel and the Fembots seemingly being influenced by this film. Plot doesn't really matter here, something about this bounty hunter capturing a scientist cause he developed a death ray or something like that, but just sit back, relax and watch the Jane Fonda Cheese Factory produce some truly amazing dairy treats! Even though the film reeks, the PQ is actually quite good actually, with the picture offering a nice, fine layer of grain, detailed to a fault (Look at how crummy the sets and effects look in HD) and very pretty to look at. The AQ is surprisingly active with a DTS-HD mono track, filled with some nice special effects, music and dialogue all heard nice and clear. Unfortunately, the only extra is the trailer in HD, though Paramount could have really struck a home run with a commentary, a making-of documentary or retrospective or anything else of note. Still, its totally recommended just for the cheese factor itself, and very cheap to boot.
