The purifier to acquire!

If you truly care, about clean air
Get an air purifier, and expect your wellbeing to be higher
I may not be much of a poet, but I do appreciate good air quality. As someone with seasonal allergies, summers can be tough for me. The air conditioner in the house does filter the air somewhat, but not enough. That’s what made me interested in the Shark Air Purifier 6.
My first floor is mostly one room, so I chose the AP 6 over the AP 4. I wasn’t sure how large it would be, so when it came in, the box was bigger than I expected. The device is pretty tall at 32 inches, and takes up 17” X 9” on the floor. That’s not too bad when you put it at the recommended 3 - 4 inches away from a wall. It also means that you can read the top display if you sit right next to it, which has lots of information about pollutants if you click the Air Info button.
You can change between three fan speeds, and set a timer between 1 and 12 hours. There is a 0 setting also, but it doesn’t seem to do anything, unless it’s an “oops, I didn’t mean to hit that” button.
The settings can also be changed with the included remote control. Another thing you can do, is set the brightness. I didn’t think about this until I moved it next to my bed and I found out it was too bright on the default setting. That’s when I discovered that there are three settings: 100%, 50% and 0%. I thought 50% was perfect for when the lights are out, but you can always turn it off at night. It’s just a click or two, either on the device or the remote.
I’ve only had the Air Purifier 6 for a week, but I’ve tested it both in the kitchen and next to my bed. I wanted to see where it made the most difference. The kitchen has to deal with typical kitchen smells, while the bed makes me sneeze on occasion. When it was in the kitchen, I noticed less food-related odors, but it was more interesting by the bed, because I actually woke up the next day feeling like the air was cleaner, and that I was more rested, which was amazing. The fan isn’t loud enough on Auto that it keeps me up, so I’ll probably keep it by the bed.
When it’s on Auto in my house, the device stays on the lowest fan speed. If you change it manually to 2 or 3, you can hear it more, but I can only imagine that you would use those settings temporarily, and not when you’re trying to sleep. By comparison, the air conditioner is much noisier and obnoxious in this house. This of course depends on the typical air quality in your home.
I don’t know how long it will take before the filter needs to be changed, but I will mention that when you receive the unit, you have to remove a plastic around the filter. This will also educate how to replace the filter, which is very easy. Just open the back, take out the old one, put the new one in. The manual mentions that it should last 6 - 12 months, but I’ve only had it a week, so it’s too early to say.
Hopefully, this air purifier lasts a long time, because if it makes me sleep better, it’s worth every dollar.
One last thing: The unit looks black in person, but in the photos, it appears to be more charcoal gray, which is the official color.

This gaming laptop delivers, it's amazing!
on June 21, 2021

I’ve been playing video games almost my entire life, but I’ve had little experience with laptops that are actually designed for gaming. My previous laptop was in the same price range and promised a decent gaming experience but it definitely did not live up to my expectations.
The ASUS ROG Strix G15 on the other hand, delivers. It’s a great looking laptop with the power you need to play basically any game you want. The main advantages are the 16GB of memory, a 512 SSD, an Ethernet port and an AMD Ryzen 9 5000 Series processor. Combined with a beautiful 1080p display, it makes gaming smooth and fun. This laptop offers up to a 300 Hz refresh rate with only a 3 ms response time, which is very impressive for a laptop. It’s also a very colorful laptop with the RGB backlit keyboard and light bars on the side. That little red piece can be replaced with included clear and silver alternatives.
So how well does Fortnite run? Amazingly smooth. I actually played Fortnite for the first time on this laptop, and managed to win my first two games. I played with a Steelseries headset (wirelessly) and an Xbox controller. I will mention that my Xbox controller became lost connection a couple of times, but this was resolved with a firmware update for the controller. I never thought I could get so immersed while playing a video game on my laptop in my kitchen, but this laptop did it. Well done, ASUS!
While playing on battery with a few power saving features (factory settings), I did get some screen tearing. Keep this in mind, in case you’re playing on the go. Turn off anything that messes with the refresh rate. It’s all in the Asus control panel. This will affect the battery life of course, which will already be heavily affected by running a modern video game. I recommend always using the power brick, which is a bit larger than a typical laptop one.
What about the speakers? This must be the first time I’m not actually disliking the sound coming out of laptop speakers. Technology has served us well in that department, although I would still recommend a good headset for gaming. If you’re just browsing the web or watching YouTube, the speakers do a good job.
The laptop has plenty of connections with 3 USB 3.2 ports, 1 USB-C port, 1 LAN port, 1 HDMI port and a 3.5mm jack. The audio jack works with headsets with microphones, in case you want to do call outs to your teammates. There’s also a built-in microphone with proper noise-canceling, if you’re without a headset. I prefer using a wireless headset because it improves the sound and the microphone level.
The touchpad is good, but I highly recommend a mouse or controller for gaming. It makes it much more fun!
If you like video chatting, you should know there’s no integrated webcam, but let’s be honest, have you ever liked the quality of a laptop webcam? I didn’t think so! Get a Logitech or AVerMedia webcam and you’ll never miss it.
What else is there to say? This is a great gaming laptop that I highly recommend to anyone looking for an amazing portable gaming experience. This is the one!

Take your sound to the next level
on May 6, 2021
Posted by: Porsche
from Los Angeles, CA
The Blue Blackout Spark SL is a terrific condenser microphone for recording and streaming voice and instruments. The sound is very transparent with plenty of air in the high frequency range. The $199 price tag makes it an affordable, yet professional alternative to the usual suspects.
The microphone itself rests in a wooden box. A shock mount is included, but is not meant to be in the same box as the microphone. The shock mount is high quality and it was particularly easy to screw it unto the mic.
I’m a musician and record a lot at home, and I was interested in this mic because I had heard great things about Blue microphones from other music industry professionals. The Baby Bottle and Bluebird are quite popular mics, particularly for singers.
I primarily record vocals and guitars, and have plenty of dynamic, condenser and ribbon mics to choose from. I started out by trying this mic out on my ENGL amp and cabinet. The first thing I discovered was that this microphone is very loud so I had to turn my pre-amp down a bit lower than normal. With the mic aimed dead-on at the cone of the speaker, there was plenty of high-end. My first thought was that it had that bright sound that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai loves so much. Another bright and popular mic is the SM57 but this one has a more unique sound, if you ask me. Moving it slightly to the side helped taming the brightness down to where I personally like it. Blending it with a ribbon mic made it particularly special which is often the case when micing guitar amp cabinets.
Recording vocals was a blast. I can see why many singers and engineers swear by this company. The microphone has a balanced proximity effect, and my voice sounded full and clear. The brightness added an airiness that really brought out the sibilance of my voice without any EQ. I genuinely enjoyed the sound of my own voice, which isn’t the case with any microphone.
If you’re considering this microphone for streaming, keep these things in mind. This is a condenser microphone, which means that it may pick up more than just your voice (room ambience, keyboard, AC.) If that’s a concern, look for a dynamic mic. The benefit of a condenser mic is that you can move around more in your brand new leather gaming chair without losing a ton of volume. I will also mention that this is an XLR condenser microphone, so you will need an audio interface plugged into your computer, in case you’re comparing it to a USB-microphone.
The microphone offers a -20dB pad and a 100Hz high-pass filter on the mic itself. No polar pattern selector (only cardioid), which is very common with condenser microphones, but apparently not with Blue microphones. This is not a big deal, but I thought I would mention it for you figure-eight fanatics!
Overall, this is a great microphone for streamers, singers and musicians who are looking for a professional, yet budget-friendly option. Just don’t forget the audio interface and pop filter!

The podcast mic of your dreams has come true!
on March 2, 2021
Posted by: Porsche

As a recording engineer, I’m quite familiar with the Shure SM7B. It was a birthday gift last year, in fact! The Shure MV7 is the younger, shorter and slightly fatter version of it. It’s also more reasonable at $249, compared to the $399 price tag for its bigger brother.
The greatest benefit of the MV7 is that you don’t need an audio interface to operate it, which means you save even more money. You can just plug it into your computer with the included USB cable and you’re ready to go. I consider this an advantage, because without an audio interface, there’s one less item on my desk, leaving more room for other things. It even comes with two different USB cables, USB-A and the more modern USB-C, which makes it compatible with many smartphone devices, in addition to your PC or Mac.
If you prefer the old fashioned way, you can certainly plug an XLR cable into the mic and plug it into your true and tested audio interface. It will then operate as a regular dynamic microphone.
Let’s talk about the most important aspect, the sound. I’m quite familiar with the response of an SM7B, and the MV7 is definitely sharing that same sonic quality. Remember that this microphone has a noticeable proximity effect, so if the low frequencies are overbearing, move away from the mic a few inches more, don’t reach for the low cut right away. This will benefit the sound tremendously. I was very impressed with the clarity and detail in my voice; very much like it’s older sibling.
Speaking of the low cut, the MV7 encourages the use of an app called ShurePlus MOTIV to make any adjustments. The SM7B has physical switches for low cut and presence boost on the mic itself, but with the MV7, you have to change those settings virtually. I installed the app on my PC and Mac, and it worked fine on both. The settings are saved on the mic, so they were the same when I switched from my PC to Mac. You can use an auto setting that works pretty well, or you can have full control in manual mode, which allows you to change the mic gain, low cut, presence boost, limiter and compressor.
Like an SM7B, you will probably have to crank the gain up a lot. When I stream, I have my mic 8 - 9 inches away from my face, and I had to crank it all the way up to get a proper level. The mic itself does have controls for volume and mute, but keep in mind that if you plug this in with an XLR cable rather than USB, you will not be able to use the onboard controls nor the app. This also applies to the headphone jack.
No mic stand is included, but this mic has many uses, so it’s up to you to figure out the type of stand you need. Shure does offer a variety of options on their website to get you going in the right direction.
If you’re a streamer or want to start a podcast, look no further as this is the mic for you. It’s designed to give both beginners and professionals everything they need to get that broadcast quality sound; fast, easy and affordable!

The best webcam, period.
on January 10, 2021

from Los Angeles, CA
The AVerMedia CAM 513, or PW513, is a breath of fresh air in the webcam market. My experience with webcams, is that they struggle with picture clarity, overexposure and a laggy/delayed image. I can also add low resolution and frame rate on top of that.
The 513 is arguably the only sensible choice for a high quality webcam in 2021. It’s the only webcam I’ve been able to find, that does everything I want it to. It offers a natural looking, clear image, with a resolution of 1080p at 30/60 FPS (it also does 4K at 30 FPS.) The image is closer to real-time than most webcams, and it’s not overexposed or too contrasty/washed out. It also works perfectly, the first time you plug it in. No drivers necessary.
With a Sony 4K CMOS image sensor, you can expect a clear picture, including under low lighting conditions, even though it can get slightly grainy. I recommend having plenty of lights available for the best looking results.
I will mention that the camera was criticized for overexposure early on, but this seems to have been addressed in a firmware update. If that’s still a problem for you, it can easily be fixed with the camera’s software, CamEngine (Lite for Mac), which I recommend if you want to make more adjustments. I did notice that the image was slightly delayed when using CamEngine as the source, rather than the camera itself. In OBS, the image looked so good without it, that I preferred selecting the webcam directly, for that real-time, smooth camera action!
As a Logitech StreamCam owner, the 513 wins easily. The StreamCam struggles with a delayed image, lag, FPS drops and overexposure, making it frustrating to use, when streaming live. I can’t wait to start using the 513 for streaming, as it resolves my main complaint about my current two-camera setup.
The 94° FOV allows you to fit everything you want in the frame. That’s wider than any Logitech webcam on the market, the Brio comes closest at 90°.
The cable is a USB-C to USB-A. The C-side plugs into the camera, and the A-side plugs into your computer. I assume you can use a C-to-C cable if you want, but many people have a limited amount of USB-C inputs, often just one, so it’s nice to have both options. It’s also nice that it’s detachable, unlike the StreamCam, so you can use any cable-length you want, or how about a 90 degree angle plug, if every inch counts? As I have my webcam between the monitor and keyboard, it’s something I might invest in.
I keep mine on a small tripod (not included), but the webcam has a built in stand, that should fit most laptops and monitors. I had no problem adjusting mine, and it supports both horizontal and vertical adjustments.
I would like to see better Mac support in the future, as on the software end, you definitely benefit from having a Windows computer. Macs only support CamEngine Lite, which lacks in features, in comparison to its Windows counterpart.
This is my first experience with AVerMedia but as of now, they’ve made a fan for life! This is the best webcam I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to see what’s in the future for this company!

Affordable webcam for students
on October 21, 2020
Posted by: Porsche
from Los Angeles, CA
The Logitech C505 HD webcam is an affordable, 720p webcam for personal, educational and business communication. The integrated mono microphone makes sure that your voice is nice and clear. It’s very compact and fits fine on top of a laptop.
The picture is presented in a 4:3 format, which means that to achieve widescreen, the image has to be cropped to a 16:9 format. This may only be an issue, if you take the field of view in mind. It’s very close and looks zoomed in, compared to other webcams. This means that your face will take up most of the frame. This might just be what you need for calls or a face cam for streaming.
The weakness of the camera is the auto light correction; as Logitech calls it. As someone with a North European complexion, it has a tendency to look overexposed, giving my face white splotches. Unfortunately, you can’t fix overexposed video. At least if it was too dark, you can brighten it up. This is a bit disappointing, considering that this is a newly introduced model.
If you’re not sure how this compares to other webcams, let me compare it to a few I have at my disposal. Compared to the integrated webcams on my 2018 iMac and 2019 Dell laptop, it performs relatively similar. If you’ve bought a computer in the past five years, the C505 will likely not be much of an upgrade picture-wise, but you might benefit from the microphone and movability. I also have a Logitech StreamCam, which has an added $110 premium. The StreamCam is definitely the better choice, both for video and audio, but I will point out, that the C505 is louder and more voice-centric. If you’re familiar with the StreamCam, I can also point out that the Logitech Capture software is not compatible with the C505, which allows you to adjust and tweak the camera settings.
If you’re looking at this webcam for streaming, I can only recommend it for a face cam, because the viewers will only see your face, neck and some of your upper body, assuming the webcam is the same distance as if it was on top of a laptop. It comes with a 7 foot cable, so you can of course move it farther back.
I recommend this webcam for people who are looking for an affordable way to be able to make video calls and attend video meetings and lectures. Whether it’s for personal, business or educational purposes, it will deliver a video and audio experience that puts emphasis on what’s important, without the bells and whistles.

Turn your Android into an Xbox in no time!
on September 30, 2020
Posted by: Porsche
from Los Angeles, CA
The Razer Kishi gaming controller for Android is a step in the right direction for gaming on the go. If you’re an Xbox owner, the design should already look and feel familiar. There’s even a true Xbox version of this controller for $20 more. The controls feel very much like its Xbox counterpart, and all the same buttons are there. Also, no installation required, so it works as soon as you plug it in, if the game/app supports it.
As a Game Pass subscriber, I would like to focus on how this controller works with the new Xbox Game Pass xCloud function. The concept of xCloud is that you’re playing a game over the internet, which means that you do need great internet, and no matter what, there will be some latency. The controller has no noticeable latency to your phone, thanks to its USB-C connection, so if you’re looking for no latency gaming, I suggest playing games that support the Kishi. I wanted to play Call of Duty Mobile but unfortunately, it only supports Bluetooth controllers as I’m writing this review.
The first game I tested through Game Pass was Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It worked pretty well, and the latency is not very noticeable. The experience was pretty good, even though it prompted me to switch to a 5.0 Ghz Wi-Fi, which forced me to reconfigure my internet settings.
The second game I tested was Destiny 2. Game Pass has a list of games that are optimal for cloud gaming, this game is not on that list and I know why. First person shooters are not great for cloud gaming. Aiming and looking around is awkward and can be frustrating, but I will say that the game looks good. I wanted to compare it to COD Mobile but unfortunately couldn’t.
One thing I noticed while playing Destiny 2 is that when I move my thumb from the right thumb-stick to the X button without looking, what I think is the X button is actually the A button, which makes me jump like a frog instead of reloading my weapon. As an Xbox gamer, this might require some getting used to.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S20+ and the device fits very nicely. There’s a USB-C input that allows you to charge your phone, but not connect headphones. If you’re looking for a more private session, or just improve the sound, you will have to use a pair of Bluetooth headphones, which brings another issue, audio latency. If you want the best experience, look for a pair of low latency headphones, made for gaming. Razer makes these. I personally played with the phone speakers, and it doesn’t sound bad at all, at least not with the S20+. The sound is off-center to the right a little, unfortunately. A 3.5 mm option would be terrific.
Do you have to remove the case before attaching the controller? Yes, so if you’re using a case, you’ll have to remove it first. With the controller attached, it’s also too large to be a something you leave on permanently, as it wouldn’t fit your pockets, and even though I didn’t try, it’s probably awkward to answer calls with it on.
I also want to mention that after playing for a while, my hands were getting tired, which is not a problem I have with a regular Xbox controller. This may vary, depending on your hands and what game you’re playing, just don’t plan on marathon sessions with the Kishi.
Overall, the Razer Kishi is a great addition to Android gaming, and a must if you’re interested in cloud gaming through Game Pass, or if you’re looking for an alternative to the Nintendo Switch and already have a modern Android smartphone. Being able to play console games on your phone, without touching the screen is pretty awesome, and as long as you’ll stay away from FPS games, you’ll have a wonderful time.

The earbuds you’ve been looking for
on September 7, 2020
Posted by: Porsche
from Los Angeles, CA
The Sennheiser CX 400BT earbuds are wonderful. The audio is great, they look stylish and more importantly, they’re comfortable.
The audio
Sennheiser is known for making great audio products, and this is no exception. The sound quality is excellent, and can be adjusted if you download the Sennheiser Smart Control app. The wave setting is a little strange and buggy, but the regular EQ should easily allow you to adjust bass, mid and treble frequencies to your liking. I wish there were presets to be honest. I also want to mention that I don’t hear any audio artifacts that can be common with Bluetooth earbuds.
Comfort
I personally have an issue with the silicone tips on most earbuds. They either itch or become uncomfortable quickly, this includes the Galaxy Buds by Samsung. I’m happy to report that the Sennheiser silicone tips don’t bother me at all, so I’ve finally found a pair of wireless earbuds I can actually use; without going crazy.
The design
They look a little boxier than the Galaxy Buds. They look like two boxes in your ears, but the shiny Sennheiser logo gives them a tiny bit of identity. The charging case is also significantly boxier, but it is extremely light. Much lighter than the Galaxy Bud case. I got it in black and it actually looks pretty cool.
Connectivity
They connect quickly to my Samsung S20+ and pairing was not an issue. So far, I’ve not experienced any dropouts or other issues while using them. They also do a decent job at phone calls with its built in microphone.
Battery life
There’s no charger included, and the USB-C cable is very short, so you probably have to use your regular phone charger and cable when it needs a charge. You get about seven hours of continued use, plus another 13 hours, thanks to the charging case. That’s a total of 20 hours of use before having to charge, which is not bad.
Criticisms
Be careful if you use these for exercise or outdoors, because they’re not water resistant. That should be a standard these days, so plan on using these under dry conditions. They’re also noticeably more expensive than the water resistant Galaxy Buds, not that there aren’t any other earbuds in this price range. They’re still much more affordable than the Momentum 2 earbuds, also made by Sennheiser.
If you’re looking for earbuds that sound great, feel comfortable and last all day, you can’t go wrong with the CX 400BT earbuds!

Great for Fortnite on the go!
on July 29, 2020
Posted by: Porsche
from Los Angeles
I recommend the JLab Play Earbuds for young gamers who’s looking for an on-the-go, low latency gaming experience at an affordable price.
These JLab earbuds promise super low latency and a quick mute microphone, perfect for gamers. In theory, you can use these on your PC, console and smartphone. One pair to rule them all! So how does JLab deliver on this promise? Are these earbuds going to be your one and only set?
If you’re a gamer, the first thing you want to know is probably how much better the latency is on the Play Earbuds compared to regular Bluetooth earbuds. Thanks to Bluetooth 5 with aptX, the latency is 60 ms. This is definitely better than the average, which is often over 200 ms. It’s even better than their 100 ms Air Play Gaming earbuds, but enough about numbers, let’s talk experience.
For latency comparisons, I was playing Call of Duty Mobile on my Samsung S20+. I compared the Play Earbuds to my Galaxy Buds with a horrendous 372 ms latency. Was the latency noticeably better on the Play Earbuds? Yes. Was 60 ms little enough that I didn’t notice the latency between audio and video? No. The audio is noticeably out of sync with the image, but close enough that I find it acceptable, just not all that enjoyable. A reason for that, is that the latency comes with a major cost. The sound.
The audio is nothing to text Mom about, as the sound quality is very basic. The Play Earbuds might be made for gamers, but the high end is a touch too harsh for me to really enjoy myself, and the bass response is lackluster. I do not recommend these earbuds for music. There’s also considerable digital noise when in Bluetooth mode. More than any other set that I’ve used. It gets worse at lower levels, which might not be a problem, since that you have to turn these up, almost all the way, to even get close to an acceptable level. 80% level on the Play Earbuds is about the same as 20% on the Galaxy Buds. After less than half an hour, my ears starting to get tired of the sound and uncomfortable with the fit.
Speaking of comfort, I want to address the ear tips. I’ve had problems with ear tips being itchy in recent years, so I was looking forward to trying these out. They’re not itchy, but some genius over at Jlab thought that putting their logo on the ear tips would be a great idea. Why? Look at their logo. It’s all sharp edges. Imagine those sharp edges, but in your ear canal. Not a great idea, and it actually makes them dirtier a lot quicker and harder to clean. I settled with the smallest tips, but they’re still not optimal. I don’t mind having these earbuds on me though. Once you wrap them around your neck, they seem to stay in place. I keep accidentally reaching for the mic instead of the controls, though.
The microphone is very basic, and in case you’re familiar with the included PS4 headset, I would compare the mic to that. If you plug the Play Earbuds into a DS4 (or anything else), you get an extra volume wheel on the cable, which is quite convenient. The audio is also clearer and louder when wired. I wish there was a firmware update that might resolve the audio artifacts over Bluetooth, but judging by their website, what you buy is what you get.
Lastly, the battery life with normal use is about 10 - 11 hours, which is pretty standard for Bluetooth earbuds. I also want to add that I had no issue connecting the unit to my Samsung through Bluetooth.
If you’re looking for an affordable pair of earbuds for young gamers with low latency, give these a chance!

A gaming mouse that focuses on what's important

The Kain 200 Aimo is the new wireless optical mouse by Roccat. It’s similar to its little brother, the Kain 120, which isn’t wireless. The Kain 200 comes with a USB Cable and USB Bluetooth receiver, so you can choose whether you prefer a wired or wireless connection.
This is a nice looking mouse, with a smooth plastic feel and lights that change color. There are multiple settings for the lights, including a feature that reacts to what’s on the screen. You can adjust the brightness, in case you find it too distracting, or turn it off completely.
The buttons are advertised as being up to 16ms faster than its competitors, thanks to its Titan Click technology. This is something that is hard for me to compare, but when playing online games, every millisecond matter so I’d rather have the fastest response possible. My experience so far is that the response time is just perfect.
After using the mouse in many different applications, my impression is that this is a very accurate and comfortable mouse that’s not too heavy. There’s a DPI button for quick switching between DPI settings when needed and if you download the Swarm app, you can customize each button and configure the illumination to your preference.
My only issue with the Swarm app was that when I was connected through Bluetooth, the app got stuck in an infinite loading loop. I’m sure this will be fixed very soon, as this is a brand new product, but if I’m going to depend on a Bluetooth connection, I need to be able to use the Swarm app.
The battery life is advertised as “up to 50 hours of game time,” but even at 100%, the battery life was only 34 - 35 hours. Apparently, with the illumination enabled, you lose about 15 hours, according to their website. The Swarm app confirms this.
Compared to other gaming mouses, the Kain 200 puts emphasis on a more simple, traditional design, avoiding a plethora of buttons and strange looking parts. That might make it more appealing to the casual gamer than the professional, but performance wise, this should satisfy both.
If you’re looking for a responsive, customizable mouse without a million buttons with a sleek design and illumination, take a look at the Kain 200 by Roccat today. You won’t regret it!
