A Sandbox for Adults
on August 23, 2022
Posted by: RonH
The HoMedics Drift Sand Table not only brings the sandbox to the 21st century, it brings it indoors as well. There are two colors - cream and black, either of which fit with any decor.
Setup is simple - place the unit on your table, dump the sand in and rake it somewhat smooth, place the silver ball in the center, place the glass on the top and load the app. From the app you have a large selection of designs including many for holidays, control of design speed, playlists and light color and brightness..
Watching the silver ball create designs in the sand is nothing short of mesmerizing! I thought watching Tik-Tok videos took me away but this has it beat. Watching the designs build coupled with relaxing breathing techniques is incredibly relaxing.
Of course the app is available for both iPhone and Android but I also like that it is available for MacOs - which is really convenient if you happen to have the Drift in your office or workspace. You can program your favorite designs in a playlist that will continue to create designs or you can choose to stop after each one. You can also schedule on and off times. I do like that the Drift app doesn't require you to create a log-in however, after a few days it does force you to register the product with personal info and there doesn't seem to be a way around this. Also, the drift will work for anyone who has the app and can connect with the Drift’s bluetooth signal, although only one at a time. A point on the bluetooth - the device name is awkward and not clearly recognizable which could be an issue if there are many other devices around you, and there is no way to change it. I did experience an issue with the app, the save feature doesn’t stick for lighting colors, dimming and speed. Fortunately this isn't that big a deal and could easily be fixed with an update.
If I’m being critical, I would have liked the Drift to include speakers so you can stream music, making one device to provide total relaxation. I would also like to see a design portion in the app to create your own designs if so inclined.
Overall, the Homedics Drift is a really cool device. I give it 5 stars and would absolutely recommend it to anyone with the means to get one.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A Beast in your Sink!
on August 16, 2022
Posted by: RonH
The Smart Choice 1.25 HP garbage disposal is one of the largest motor sizes I’ve seen for a disposer.
Installation of the disposer was really easy - enough so that anyone comfortable doing simple home/plumbing repairs should be able to tackle it in about an hour or so. Everything needed for the install other than plumbers putty is in the box. The hardest part was getting the old sink flange with years of buildup out. One item of note - the instructions say to not overtighten the three flange screws on the new flange and I can attest that if you do, it will pop the C-like ring that holds the assembly together. Not a problem, just a scare when it pops. I also like that this disposer is powered with a three-prong plug rather than hard wired. I also like that this model includes the magnetic bracelet that magnetizes the flange to help catch stray metals that might fall into the sink.
Using the disposal is straight forward, dump your waste, turn on the cold water and turn the disposer on. For its size, the disposal is quiet and ground through everything I dumped in it. It says it's powerful enough to grind up small bones. I generally try to avoid dumping bones but it's nice to know it can handle them.
The disposal comes with an easily removable splash guard so if something like a ring falls in it, you can just pull the splash guard out to make it easier to reach in and grab it.
With the 10 year warranty and lifetime corrosion warranty, I highly recommend the Smart Choice disposal.

Don't pass this one up!

First of all you need to realize this is not a multi-thousand dollar Epson laser projector. With that said, what you are getting is a very capable budget projector that has a lot of high-end features.
The Buffalo Pro U10 projector comes in a nice carrying case that holds the unit, cables and remote. The build is plastic and the unit resembles robot eyes when viewed from the front. The plug is the old-school computer plug, no transformers or wall warts here. The remote controls all the functions of the projector and there are buttons on the top to navigate but not for volume. I was a little disappointed to see that two AAA batteries were not included for the remote. Also, unlike several other Yaber models, the U10 does not include a projection screen, however, according to the instructions, sending them an email will get you a free one. In a quiet room you will hear the cooling fan, it is a bit loud however, with audio playing it really does become un-noticeable.
There are two metal bars used as feet and they have screw holes under rubber caps if you want to mount the projector to the ceiling if you buy a mount. I would think you could mount it with a few eye hooks as well if you want to be handy. Unfortunately, there is no height adjustments so if your table or stand isn’t high enough you have to grab a few books.
Connectivity: There are two HDMI ports, two USB A ports,VGA and an RCA input and headphone jack. The HDMI ports are a little tight and I had to jiggle the plugs to get things plugged in. The U10 also connects to W-Fi for Apple screen mirroring Miracast for Android. There is a built-in speaker that works but not something you would want to watch a feature film with. You can also connect it to external speakers via Bluetooth or if your sound bar has a 3.5mm line-in you can use the headphone jack.
Using the U10 projector is straightforward, connect your device and select your input. I especially like the USB connectivity. The U10 recognizes thumb and external SSD drives that are formatted with exFAT allowing you to play larger media files directly from the USB drive. This is definitely a plus since my televisions only recognize fat32 which is limited to file size. The file selection is excellent and covers most current media files including .mov, .mov, mp4, .avi, and .flv. If your USB drive has a folder full of videos, this will play them one after the other until you press stop. Another plus is this projector recognizes and plays Microsoft office files so you can put your PowerPoint on a flash drive and control your meeting directly from the projector - a real time saver. Note, you can not connect a keyboard or mouse via Bluetooth but there is no mention of connecting one via USB.
As far as the picture goes, I was impressed. I have about a 75 inch picture size with the unit just over eight feet away from the wall. I found the projector to be bright enough to work in the daytime but wouldn’t expect a great image if competing with direct sunlight. The digital keystone correction is amazing for a model of this price and worked flawlessly however, you can only adjust when you’re in the menu system, you can not adjust while viewing your source video. You adjust each corner either up and down or left and right. Tip here is to start with the corner that is the furthest out since your only movement to start with is to move in and down. From here move to the rest of the corners to get your picture square. One thing I noticed with using the corner correction is you get a slight ring or frame around the edge of the picture. This is nothing to worry about and not noticeable once you get into the movies or video you are viewing. There are image adjustment settings to fine tune the picture as well as several presets. This also applies to audio but as I said, you will be best served by connecting external speakers.
I was able to connect the U10 to my network and use Apple screen mirroring but there was significant lag when trying to view a YouTube video. My setup is a connected fire stick and Bluetooth connection to my sound bar. It is important to note that with my Fire Stick I had to change the sound output from automatic to PCM for the audio to travel through the HDMI port.
Regarding the network, you are supposed to be able to update firmware via the network as well as by using a USB drive. I was not able to connect to the firmware site using the local option as it didn’t recognize the network. Not sure if this could have been due to there not being an update available or a glitch.
Overall, I am really impressed with the Buffalo U10 Pro and give it 5 stars. The USB options and file formats alone make it worth the price. Is it perfect? No, but the feature set and full HD image quality make it a must buy. Yes, I highly recommend it.

The Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell with Chime is affordable, easy to set up, and even easier to use. No hardwiring or tools are necessary - just peel and stick the Doorbell Camera anywhere that you’d like a second pair of eyes where Wi-Fi is available. For a whole year, your Video Doorbell Camera will run on rechargeable lithium batteries, included in your package. AC line-in cable available as well. You’ll be notified on your smartphone when there’s motion, a ring, or both via the Kangaroo App. Here, you’ll be able to check your notifications, look at the HQ video captures, and upgrade your plan all from one place. Plus, when your Chime is paired with your Video Doorbell Camera, it makes an audible sound when your bell is rung. Welcome to smarter home security.

Not without issues

The Kangaroo Smart Video Doorbell with chime is an inexpensive way to add a touch of security to your home.
The box contains the doorbell/camera, chime unit, usb charging cable, mounting anchors, hard wire connectors and 110 to usb adapter.
Mounting the unit is straightforward and offers two methods. Double face tape as well as hard-mounted with screws. I also like that in addition to the rechargeable battery, you can hard wire to an existing doorbell setup.
Connecting the doorbell and chime unit to the app is easy and there was a firmware update to do once connected. Once everything is connected you can view live video from the doorbell or view the last 24 hours of events. When viewing live video it takes about 30 seconds or so to connect. The doorbell is used in a hallway and when people walk by they are captured but only while walking away. This lag is concerning since if they grabbed a package I would only see their backs as they are walking away. Night Vision video is black and white vs color but is very clear and easy to see. If you flip your phone you get full screen video and can zoom in.
The chime unit is compact but rather than being able to plug directly into the wall socket, it's USB and requires the adapter. The volume is adjustable and loud enough for a small space. I wouldn't expect to hear it if it were on a different floor or if the tv was on at a decent volume. It did automatically reconnect to the network from being unplugged using the adapter to charge the doorbell though.
The app seems to be more of an advertisement to purchase one of Kangaroo’s security subscription plans which are required to unlock many of the features like access to videos more than 24 hours old and longer than 12 seconds, motion zones and person detection. It also seems the app is more designed to be used as a full security system with the doorbell function being just a small part of the larger system. At $99 a year, it would be an inexpensive security system if you purchased all the sensors and alarms.
Kangaroo has Alexa and Google home integration. I was successful with connecting it to Alexa but unsuccessful with making it work. I was hoping I could see the video on my Echo Show but that wasn't possible.
I give the Kangaroo Video Doorbell and Chime four stars. I think the hardware is capable but crippled by the app. Tighten up the motion sensing and create an app just for the doorbell function or have a toggle in the app to turn off the security features unless you have them. If you are in the market for a wireless bell, the Kangaroo Video Doorbell is just a few $$ more than a basic version and worth consideration.

The Twinkly Dots light string is much more than just expensive Christmas lights!
This set has 200 individual “dots” connected by a very flexible clear cable. Rather than one string of 200 dots like I expected, there are two strings of 100 with the controller box in the middle - limiting your design concepts. There is a decent length of cable between the controller and first dot as well as a long power cable which helps a lot. Unfortunately, there are only 45 double-faced mounting dots included with this set so mount wisely. The dots are white plastic which gives some colors a nice pastel look but the primary red, blue and green are strong colors and show up rich and colorful. Also know there is a front and back to the dots when you mount them.
Of course there’s an app for that. Once you set up an account connecting the lights to my Wi-Fi was straightforward. I like that if you don't have Wi-Fi, the control box has its own signal so no worries if you only use your phone for your internet. The app also allows you to connect your dots to Alexa, Google and Siri.
Once you get your lights set up, the app is where the magic happens. Using the app, you take a video of the lights in whatever configuration you choose and the app “Maps” the dots. When you have your design mapped, you now have the ability to have full motion movement of the light like waves of color and spinning wheels of light. You can also draw your own motion designs. I can see with enough strings of dots and some patience, you could make a giant text display. You can control the brightness and speed of the motion, turn the string on and off either manually or by setting a timer. If you don't like the included animations in the app, you can go to the twinkly store by clicking on the cloud icon in the upper right corner of the app and download additional effects which is really cool.
Unlike rope lights, you can not string sets together to make one long rope of lights but the app does allow you to program multiple sets together. According to the manual, the dots have an IP44 rating so they can be used both indoors and out. Speaking of the manual, the type is so small that I needed a magnifying glass to read it. This is true for the writing on the box as well. Fortunately, there is an online version at help.twinkly.com.
I really like the Twinkly Dots light set and can see myself purchasing additional sets for holiday decorating. I give Twinkly Dots four stars for only including 45 mounting tapes and for being two separate strings rather than one long string but would and have recommended them to friends.

Just WOW
on July 24, 2022
Posted by: RonH
Long gone are the days of just plugging your headphones in and enjoying them. Now you have to download an app and create a login to control them. The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2’s are no different.
Comfort: At just over 10 ounces (307 grams), the S2’s are the most comfortable set of over the ear headphones I have. The clamping pressure against my ears is just enough to make a solid seal from the memory foam ear pads. Wearing them for several hours at a time in my office, it's easy to forget you're wearing them.
Connectivity: The PX7 S2’s connect via Bluetooth as well as hard wire via the USB-C port and included 3.5mm to USB-C and USB-C to USB=C cables. The S2’s can connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time however you can only listen to one at a time. I really like that you can add and juggle devices by using the app. Connecting them to my devices was quick and painless. One thing to note is that while the S2’s can be used by connecting with the 3.5mm jack they do need to be powered on. There is no passive connectivity.
This also presented another issue/inconvenience - when directly connected, unless you disconnect your Bluetooth connections, notices and alerts that appear on your phone if connected do interrupt the sound from the direct connection. This also happened when listing to music from my phone and also connected to my laptop - any sound coming from the laptop played but also caused the music from my phone to pause and not resume. At least when playing from the wired connection the source didn't stop.
Battery:The battery life is rated at 30 hours and a 15 minute quick charge will get you an additional 7 hours of usage. I’m able to get 3-4 days between charges with moderate usage during my commute and teams meetings throughout the day. Charging is done via USB-C and a full charge takes about two hours.
App: The PX7 S2’s pair with the Bowers & Wilkins Music app. As I mentioned previously the app allows you to connect to additional Bluetooth sources - something I really like!. You can adjust treble and bass and see the remaining battery life. I would have liked a more personalized sound setting - other headphones I have offer a hearing test and adapt their sound to your specific hearing.
Sound: I really like how the S2’s sound. Trebles are sparkling and bright and bass is strong. I like a heavier bass and the S2’s deliver on it. Vocals sound amazing especially those with an upper register. The app has a sound setting however you only have adjustment for bass and treble. The soundstage is immersive and realistic. Overall, these sound like the premium headphones that they are. You can also use the S2’s for your phone calls. They sound great on both ends. The person on the other end of the call pretty much only hears your voice with very little bleed through of external sounds.
Noise Canceling: I found the noise canceling to be adequate for my subway commute, idle conversations and tunnel roar were muted nicely. There is a transparency mode that allows you to hear things around you. I found this not as effective as other headphones I have however I was able to have a conversation without issue.
The B&W PX7 S2’s come with a nice zipper case that has a nice cable holder. The headphones do not fold however the ear cups spin to lay flat in the case.
Overall I am really impressed with these headphones and they have become my new go to. I give them 5 stars and highly recommend them to anyone looking for decent premium headphones.

High price with minimal storage

The Nixplay Smart Photo Frame is yet another device designed to lure you into a monthly subscription.
Like many people, my cell phone has all but replaced my digital camera. The problem is now I have tons of photos and memories on my phone and have been looking for a way to display them without printing and framing each one. Enter digital photo frames.
The Nixplay Smart Photo Frame Touchscreen is well constructed and feels solid. It comes with anchors for wall mounting and a stand that works both with portrait and landscape. There is also a regular version of this frame that does not have the touch screen; rather it comes with a remote control to emulate the touch features. While it's nice to add the features, isn't a frame supposed to be set and forget? Not sure the need.
Setup starts with connecting to Wi-Fi using the touchscreen keyboard. There was an update that happened immediately after connecting. The Nixplay app recognized the frame and connected to it without issue. You can use the touchscreen to handle most everything on the frame including settings and photo forward and back but you need the app to load your photos and upto 15 second videos to the frame as there is no memory card slot or USB port. I’m not a fan of touchscreens due to fingerprints and this is no different.
Uploading photos via the app is straightforward, select your photos from your camera roll and send them to the frame. This is limited due to the frames 8GB internal and 10GB cloud storage limit however, you can subscribe to their service for a monthly fee which will give you up to 50GB cloud storage and allows videos up to one minute. It also provides discounts on additional frames and photo prints. Interestingly it also provides an unlimited warranty on the frame for as long as you subscribe and 24/7 phone support unlike the limited monday-friday support for non-members.
The app also allows you to invite friends to send photos and videos to your frame as well as share frame permissions. This requires the other people to also install the app and create accounts. It is important to know that only one person can pair with the frame so in my case my wife has to be granted permission to control the frame or invited to share her photos with it. Getting her setup wasn’t as easy as I had hoped but we finally got it.
The app also tries to be a type of social media platform where you can chat with your family and friends. If you have parents or grandparents and want to share photos with them (and they can get the app to work) this could be a nice feature for you.
The display is crisp and bright however, it is also very reflective. At this price I would have liked an anti-reflective coating or museum glass that can be purchased at most frame shops.
You can have your photos displayed to fit the screen, fill the screen, pan and zoom or snapshot. You can also select the transition between photos and the length of time they are displayed. I really like the snapshot mode.
There is a volume control for videos but I didn’t load any and a brightness adjustment so you can set the frame to your liking and surroundings but there is no auto brightness adjustment which I found odd and would have liked for this price.
The frame is able to detect motion/activity which is used to shut it down when there is no one present. There are 10 sensitivity levels for motion detection and at the default highest level, the frame never shuts off. Reducing the sensitivity to 5 has allowed it to shut off a few times but this seems to be hit or miss.
You can also define start and stop times to turn the frame off at night as it is pretty bright. The scheduling feature works as it should however.
I really like the concept of digital frames and ultimately don’t hate this one, however, with many if not most digital frames of a similar size costing half the price, the lack of a media card/usb port, the confusing sharing part of the app and subscription plan - I find it difficult to recommend the Nexplay Smart Photo Frame to a friend.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Play It Loud

Posted by: RonH
The first thing you notice about the XG300 is how heavy it is. This thing weighs 6 pounds 10 oz and is only 12.5 inches wide but don't let the size fool you - this thing kicks!
Bluetooth pairing to my iPhone was as expected, quick and easy. The literature says the XG300 has fast pair - giving a one-tap connection for androids however, it doesn't have the NFC indication on it.
There are two apps for Sony speakers: Music Connect and Fiestable. Music Connect gives you basic controls along with sound customizations like bass and equalizer. Fiestable gives you the party connect and DJ features which are pretty cool - adding sounds and scratches to your music simply by shaking your phone and different swipes on your phone's screen. Party connect lets you connect multiple speakers together for larger areas or just more music at your gathering. You can also pair two units together for enhanced stereo sound.
But how does it sound? With it’s IP67 rating and solid build, it's clear this speaker is intended for outside, be loud and have kicking bass and it excels at all! As expected, the XG300 sounds best when it’s loud. Of course the bass kicks and the highs are crisp and it is loud enough to be heard over a gas string trimmer. It does a nice job at filling my back yard with sound and can be heard nicely from 100 feet away.
Like many previous Sony speakers, the XG300 has Ambient Illumination which is located at each end of the unit. The illumination is customizable and cute but difficult to see in anything but a dark room. Also, the black surrounding absorbs the minimal light - Sony should have used a metallic trip around the bass ports to reflect the light rather than absorb it. I just turn it off to increase the already great battery life. I have several Sony’s with this lighting and it's been underwhelming on all of them. Not a reason to buy this speaker - but a nice touch nonetheless.
Speaking of battery life, Ive been using this for several days and havent had to charge it yet. It’s rated for 25 hours and a 10 minute charge will get you another 70 minutes of play time. Charging is done via USB C and there is an included wall wart adapter. There is also a USB A plug to charge your phone as well as a line-in for non-bluetooth input.
As I mentioned, the XG300 is IPX67 rated which means it is designed to survive complete immersion should it fall into water as long as the cover over the ports is closed. I did it so you don't have to - yes, it will survive and it floats. See the pictures.
I really like the Sony SRS-XG300 and recommend it to anyone looking for a great sounding portable speaker for picnics and parties.

Great Wi-Fi Mesh system
on June 20, 2022
Posted by: RonH
The DECO AX4300 is a Wi-Fi 6 Mesh system that will cover your home with a strong Wi-Fi signal. It comes as a three pack of identical units that will cover up to 7000 square feet. In my three story house, I have one unit on each floor that provides seamless coverage inside as well as a strong signal on both my front porch and backyard.
Setup couldn't be easier - just download the Deco app to your phone, connect one module to your internet via the ethernet cable provided and follow the setup steps. My network was up and running in about 15 minutes including installing the firmware update. Adding the additional nodes was as simple as plugging them into power and waiting for the light to turn green - no additional intervention was needed. A tip - if you want to name each of the nodes for the location do that after each one as they show up by their individual codes. This was a little confusing at first as there is not a good instruction manual for this set. Simply touch the internet globe on the home page and each module will show up and allow you to change it's name and show you the devices connected to that module.
Speed wise, I get full speed at every corner of my house. The Deco has an AI mesh system that learns and passes your device seamlessly to the best node to provide the best speed regardless of where in the house you are. This works smoothly and as expected. There are also six data streams so multiple users won't bog down the system.
Managing the system via the app is pretty straight forward and it offers all the router features you might need to customize your setup. There is parental control so you can keep watch over your children’s usage time, limit their bandwidth and shut them down if needed.
You can subscribe to TP Link’s Home Shield product to provide additional network protection against cyberthreats and allows you to block content you might not want on your home network.
I give the AX4300 Mesh system five stars and would highly recommend it to a friend.

Great for backpacks

The Samsung T7 Shield is a portable SSD drive that is ready to go with you whether you're hiking the trails or roaming the cubicles. The IP65 rated drive has a thick rubber jacket that can handle drops, dust and a splash or two. I like it because I don't have to worry about it getting banged up in my backpack.
Samsung rates this drive at 1000 Mbps write and 1050 Mbps and I achieved this using CrystalDiskMark. Using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I got approximately 850 reads and writes. For comparison - my laptop SSD gets about 3500 Mbps for both reads and writes.
The T7 ships with two cables, USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C. I did find that a USB-C cable I use with another drive didn’t work with the Samsung, I needed to use the enclosed cable. The drive worked as expected on my Windows PC, iMac as well as my iPad Pro.
The T7 includes software that lets you password encrypt the drive to protect your files if it gets misplaced.
I like the speed, versatility and three-year warranty of the Samsung T7 Shield. Yes, I would recommend this drive to a friend.

Can this stove be used on a deck?

Per the instructions, this should be placed on a non-flammable surface like concrete and not used on decks, either wood or composite wood. While this is a compact unit, it does get very hot.
